Blackhawks Second Leading Goal Scorer Out 3-4 Weeks

Artem Anisimov, Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks will be without Artem Anisimov for the next 3-4 weeks. He suffered a left leg injury against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night and left the game. His exact injury has not been revealed yet so stay tuned to Sports mockery for more information.

Anismov has had a career resurgence in a spot the Blackhawks have been trying to fill for years on the second line. The 28 year old center was having the best year of his career between Artemin Panarin and Patrick Kane. He is one of four Blackhawks players with at least 20 goals (22) and was in the middle of his most productive season (45pts).

Nick Schmaltz replaced Anisimov during the Canadiens game and will most like fill that role as the team goes forward. Newly acquired John Hayden will probably see time on the top line alongside Jonathan Toews for the time being.

Peanut Tillman Has Great Advice For New Bears QB Mike Glennon

peanut tillman

Does Mike Glennon really grasp the situation he’s walking into? It’s hard to imagine he does. He said he did lots of research trying to find a team that fit him best. Chicago jumped off the screen. Easy to understand. They have a star-laden interior offensive line and a Pro Bowl running back. That’s always a great starting point for a young quarterback anxious to prove something.

The thing is he probably didn’t include a history lesson in that research. Since the year 2000 alone they have had 20 different quarterbacks start at least one game for them. Only the Cleveland Browns have had more in that same time span. Not great company to keep and a perfect encapsulation of what this franchise can’t win anything consistently.

So how exactly does a man handle that sort of pressure, that sort of history? Well the good news is the Cubs just got done showing everybody that ugly histories don’t last forever. Thankfully though a former fan favorite decided to step up and offer the young man some wise advice about what to expect.

Fred Hoiberg’s Comments Shed Light On Bulls Plan For Home Stretch

fred hoiberg bulls rotation plan home stretch

For a while during that 5-game losing streak, it looked like the Bulls were actively trying to fall out of the playoff picture. The offense couldn’t score and the defense couldn’t stop anybody. Fred Hoiberg’s wildly changing rotation saw a dozen different players take the floor in multiple games. Not only that, the new guys who arrived at the trade deadline were getting minutes ahead of roster staples like Nikola Mirotic and Rajon Rondo.

That all changed on Monday night. Rondo got his starting job back and ran the offense to perfection, pushing the pace and getting all teammates involved. Mirotic returned from the inactive list to score 24 points and pull down 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, former Thunder mates Cameron Payne and Joffrey Lauvergne combined to play just 14 minutes. The result was a 115-109 win for the desperate Bulls. They’re still on the outside looking in, but just 1/2 game separates Chicago from Milwaukee in the 8th seed.

Consistency For Playoff Push

At the team’s morning shootaround, Hoiberg offered his thoughts on the recent rotation changes. First off, he confirmed that Rondo will remain the starting point guard tonight against Memphis. The Chicago Tribune’s K.C. Johnson reports:

Based on Rondo’s 20 point-7 rebound-6 assist performance on Monday, it’s safe to say he’d be starting again regardless of Payne’s status. Payne’s sore foot means we’ll likely see Jerian Grant serve as Rondo’s backup. Grant was the third point guard on the roster to go from starter to DNP-Coach’s Decision this season, but his recent hot shooting should keep him ahead of Payne for the final stretch of games.

As for Fred’s complete rotation, he’s finally getting ready to shrink it down to a reasonable size. Nick Friedell of ESPN got this quote from the coach earlier today:

“Obviously consistency with the rotation is something that we’re going to strive for here the rest of the season. I think you saw that in the game against Charlotte where we basically played nine, Joffrey [Lauvergne] came in when Cris [Felicio] picked up his three fouls. To kind of make it a nine and a half man rotation. So that’s the plan. There could be some circumstances that get a couple guys in there from time to time. The plan is to tighten things up here in this last 16 [games] and hopefully make a push.” – Fred Hoiberg

After the trade deadline, Hoiberg’s bosses explained the reason for making that trade with the Thunder. Essentially, the plan was to open up minutes for some of the younger players on the roster and evaluate the new guys. Ideally, they’d remain competitive and make the playoffs while that was happening.

Well, that losing streak proved that doing both was impossible. Hoiberg was failing to find any kind of success playing twelve guys, and giving significant minutes to newcomers unfamiliar with the system didn’t help either.

Now, the plan is clear…er…ish. Hoiberg is going to ride his three alphas (yes, Rondo included) and a shorter rotation down the final stretch to hopefully win enough games to make the playoffs. Apparently getting back into the playoff mix is more important than spreading the minutes around to young players. Bulls fans can debate until the cows come home about whether or not that’s the right move. But there’s one positive we can take from it: at least it is a direction. Not the mashing together of two conflicting directions, which is what we’ve seen in recent weeks.

Dennis Rodman Channels James Brown On Las Vegas Strip

Dennis Rodman is still living it up at age 55. The Worm, who won three of his five NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls, was spotted partying outside of Planet Hollywood on the Las Vegas strip Monday night.

Dennis found a microphone and started giving a speech about the importance of love to a crowd of onlookers while a bucket drummer sat nearby. But his speech appeared to be cut short as music started playing. The Worm didn’t seem to mind, as he quickly joined in on the performance. As the drummer finds his zone, Rodman plays to the crowd while singing the lyrics to James Brown’s hit “Get On Up”.

Good ol’ Dennis being Dennis.

The Worm may not be able to “get on up” to clean the glass on the hardwood like he used to, but he still parties like a champion.

Bears Fans Have Quietly Missed How Much Worse The Packers Got

The Chicago Bears are focused on their own problems. There are plenty to go around. Mike Glennon become the first one in eight years to accept the challenge of fixing the teams’ quarterback woes. Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper arrive to bolster a badly depleted secondary. Markus Wheaton and Kendall Wright hope to fill in for the loss of Alshon Jeffery.

These aren’t bad moves, but they also aren’t ones that are going to pull the Bears out of the quicksand they’ve been in the past few years. That will come in the NFL draft next month. GM Ryan Pace knows he has to shine there. He also knows 2017 must be one of progress in the win column or his job is going to be called into question next year.

At the end of the day he can only control what he can control. Then again it’s always nice to get some help from elsewhere. Specifically the possible decline of another team in the division. Nobody has really taken notice of it, but that seems to be happening with the Green Bay Packers.

Javier Baez Adds Celebration To No-Look Tag And It’s Badass

Javier Baez is everything that’s awesome about baseball. He’s the most exciting player in MLB and once again he showed off his ridiculous talent at the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday night.

Baez is the tag wizard. He’s made it an art form, catching would-be base stealers with a lightning fast drop of the glove at second base. Chicago Cubs fans have seen Baez pull off the no-look tag plenty of times during his career so far, but Baez took it to the next level playing for Puerto Rico against the Dominican Republic.

The no-look tag itself looks smooth as hell, but adding a finger point to Yadier Molina for the outstanding throw before the base runner even gets to the bag is phenomenal. Fans always complain about how they wish athletes were more real and not try to appease others by being generic.

Well, this is as real as it gets. Javier Baez sweats swagger. This man is amazing to watch. Baseball is better for having him play the game.

Remember, Baez had to work his ass off after his MLB debut when he was awful for six weeks in 2014. He didn’t make the team to start the 2015 season and when he was killing it at triple-A he suffered a hand injury. That setback didn’t stop Baez, who was called up late in the year and made the postseason roster. Exactly one year later, Baez explodes on to the scene during the Cubs’ World Series run and now everyone knows who he is.

This tweet sums it up perfectly.

Sports are supposed to be fun, right? There isn’t anyone more fun to watch than Baez and for Cubs fans, we’re extremely lucky because we see this all year long.

By the way, I’m all in on the WBC now. The intensity is off the charts and as close as you get to a playoff atmosphere.

Here’s The Creepiest Reason The Bears Must Trade The #3 Pick

chicago bears #3 pick

With the big waves of free agency past, the focus of Chicago Bears nation has shifted to the main event. The NFL draft is just over a month away. It is without question the single-most important three days this team has had in at least a decade. GM Ryan Pace has done a lot of work to overhaul the entire roster during his first two years in charge. Unfortunately he doesn’t have much to show for it.

The Bears are just 9-23 to start his tenure in Chicago. Nobody bothers to point out that the same was true for his counterpart Ted Thompson up in Green Bay. Regardless the overall point doesn’t change. Every regime, with some exceptions, are expected to start showing results by their third season. That time is at hand for Pace.

This team must start winning more football games. That makes this upcoming draft beyond critical. He can’t afford to miss on too many picks. None more so than the first one, the #3 overall. Conventional wisdom says it should be easy for him to find a really good football player at that spot. Then again, they could always trade it for more picks.

At least that’s the typical reason. It turns out there might be another, scarier one.

Artem Anisimov Leaves Game With Injury Amidst Career Year With Blackhawks

Artem Anisimov was injured late in the first period of tonight’s game versus the Montreal Canadiens and left the game. He was checked into the boards by Alexander Radolov on a clean hit. As Radulov went down he rolled Anisimov’s left leg.

The timing could not be worse for him. Earlier in the game he recorded his 45th point of the season, a career high. On the play, he shielded the puck from a defender to create time for Patrick Kane to move up the ice and score.

Such plays make him extremely valuable to the team’s top-scoring line. Since being acquired by the Blackhawks he has become the consistent center the team has been searching for to accompany Kane.

Aa mentioned before, Anisimov left the game but no word on how long he will be out. Stay tuned to Sports Mockery for more info.

At Least One Bears Player Isn’t Thrilled About Free Agency Additions

tracy porter

The Chicago Bears were busy through the first few days of the 2017 free agency period. Mike Glennon was their first major acquisition, becoming the next quarterback of the franchise. He was soon followed by tight end Dion Sims, safety Quintin Demps and wide receiver Markus Wheaton. A day or so later it was Kendall Wright, another receiver joining the haul.

However, the most discussed additions by a wide margin were at the cornerback position. First came Prince Amukamara. A former first round pick of the New York Giants, he just spent a year in Jacksonville as a starter. Though not a star, most feel he’s reliable and experienced. Two things the Bears don’t have much of in their secondary.

Then came the more celebrated addition in Marcus Cooper. A Pro Bowl alternate last season, he finished with four interceptions. He was so excited about signing with Chicago that he wrote a letter to the city. To top it off Johnthan Banks, a waiver wire pickup from late last year, was also re-signed. Great in terms of the team trying to improve their biggest weakness on defense.

At the same time, not everybody seems happy about it.

PFF Grades Reveal Huge Weakness In Chicago Bears Defense

Pro Football Focus (PFF) released their grades for the 2016 campaign and it’s pretty embarrassing for Chicago fans. After a 3-13 season there wasn’t much optimism expected, but it’s now clear where the biggest hole on defense actually is.

If you don’t know, PFF is the most universally used grading system for professional football players. Their methods indicate they grade each player individually, on every play, based on what their perceived assignment is. The majority of it is subjective, but they’ve grown to become incredibly well respected in the industry.

Recently, they added the newly acquired free agents to the Chicago Bears roster and released a compilation of the team’s individual player grades. When you look at the defense, one player appears to stick out like a sore thumb.
