Shitty Bulls Just Put Up The Worst First-Half In The NBA

I’ll be honest guys, I have not watched much Chicago Bulls basketball as of late and I’m better for it. The Bulls don’t deserve your attention, but this was too hilarious to pass up. On Sunday, the vomit inducing Bulls had the shittiest first-half of the season. Not just bad for them, but for all of the NBA.

This was some embarrassing stuff and I’m glad the Bulls are on national TV, so that more people are exposed to the garbage we’ve had to put up with. The Bulls only scored 26 points in the first half against the Boston Celtics, setting a new record low for the season.

Here’s how the Bulls started Sunday’s game.

Fred Hoiberg is terrible. The players are terrible. The front office is terrible. Trash all around this organization.

Second half isn’t getting any better.

To say the Bulls suck is the understatement of the year. Burn it all down.

Anthony Rizzo Hits Ball, Cracks Oakland A’s Press Box Window

Normally we get cracked windshields on cars during spring training, Kyle Schwarber knows all about that, but Anthony Rizzo made his mark on Sunday, cranking a press box window against the Oakland A’s.

Here’s Where The Chicago Bears Stand Three Days Into Free Agency

ryan pace

After a dismal 2016 season that saw the Chicago Bears finish last in the NFC North yet again, Bears GM Ryan Pace vowed that the team would be thoroughly evaluated and that results were coming.

He promised that everything was on the table with respect to the all-important quarterback position, and that he was going to use every avenue and resource possible to add talent and depth to the roster.

Considering the plethora of resources available at the Bears’ disposal, namely all the cap space in the world and high draft picks, this offseason seemed primed to be one of the busiest in recent memory.

Indeed it has been … and we’re barely three days into the new league year.

The Bears, though missing out on the top 3 defensive backs in free agency despite heavy pursuit, have already made a substantial number of moves this offseason: both additions and subtractions to their previously thin roster.

And one can guarantee that more moves are coming before we hit the wonderful craziness that is the NFL Draft in April. Rumors are already flying that the Bears are meeting with other players that would add competition in training camp.

But at this stage, barely three days into free agency, where do the Bears stand? Let’s examine.

Eloy Jimenez And Ian Happ Are Crushing Home Runs For The Cubs

The Chicago Cubs still have some beasts in their minor league system and so far during spring training Eloy Jimenez and Ian Happ are crushing it, hitting the ball hard and over the fence. It’s just not fair for the rest of MLB and I love it.

Kyle Schwarber misses the entire year? No problem. Cubs win 103 games and get to the World Series. Schwarber is literally not human, comes back from two major surgeries and rakes in the World Series. Cubs win. So what happens next? Aroldis Chapman gets a billion dollars from the New York Yankees, leaving Joe Maddon without an elite closer. No problem. Jorge Soler gets traded to the Kansas City Royals for Wade Davis, who has been the best reliever in the last three years. Dexter Fowler leaves in free agency? No problem. Cubs sign Jon Jay and already have Albert Almora Jr. getting ready to be the future full-time center fielder. But wait, the Cubs lost Soler. Losing a little depth in the outfield?

Hey there, Eloy.

Jimenez, the No. 1 Cubs prospect, hit his second home run of the spring on Saturday and has been killing it in Arizona. Yeah, I know, it’s only spring training, but that and his monster year in 2016 is all we have to judge him on. Plus, at 20-years-old, he still has time to grow his game and right now his floor is a guy who hits 30 home runs a year. Not bad.

Anyway, on the off chance that Jimenez kinda flames out and doesn’t amount to much (which I highly doubt) there’s this other guy the Cubs have, who is also destroying baseballs in the Cactus League.

Sup, Ian Happ.

That was also Happ’s second homer of spring training. Happ is hitting .400 in 25 at-bats and out of his 10 hits, the 2015 first-round pick, has five extra base hits.

By the way, Schwarber hit his first dinger on Saturday, and it might have actually landed on the moon.

Can’t wait for Opening Day.

Blackhawks Sign Top Prospect John Hayden Mid-Game

The Chicago Blackhawks management is always working and they proved it mid-game against the Minnesota Wild. The organization announced a two-year entry level deal with John Hayden.

Hayden was drafted 74th overall by the Blackhawks in 2013. The organization has much interest in signing him after his junior season at Yale but he decided to play his senior year.

The move seems to have worked for him. He had his highest goal output in his college career, tallying 21 goals this season. He did most of his damage on the power play and four of his goals were game tying or game winning goals.

Hayden is First Team All-Ivy League and finalist for the Hobey Baker Award for college’s best player. Following the game, Coach Quenneville said that Hayden will join the team and play for the Blackhawks this season.

Uptight Mike Matheny Tries To Be Funny, Fails Miserably

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny isn’t exactly known for being a “fun” type of guy during his six-year stint as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. In 2014, the Milwaukee Brewers ran an All-Star campaign for their catcher Jonathan Lucroy which poked fun at the Cardinals organization.

Instead of acknowledging the humor of it, Matheny shit his pants and threw a hissy fit. When he was asked his thoughts on the Lucroy video, he stated the Cardinals success isn’t “anything for us to apologize for” and the Cardinal Way leaves a “bad taste in peoples mouths.”

No, Cardinals fans obsession of sharing past accomplishments leave a bad taste in my mouth but that’s a completely different story.

Matheny is trying to shed his uptight reputation for a new “fun” approach for the 2017 season.

It’s already off to an awkward start.

Leonard Floyd Isn’t Aldon Smith, But This Possible Bears Draft Target Is

taco charlton bears

The Chicago Bears are making it clear their goal is to build an elite defense. After some horrific years in 2013 and 2014, during which the unit hit all-time lows under Marc Trestman, priorities have changes. GM Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox are two men from defensive backgrounds. They understand how beneficial a great defense can be. Not to mention what it means to the city.

Often the central part of that process involves a pass rush. Teams that can put regular heat on the quarterback tend to do well. That’s why the Bears moved up in the first round of last year’s draft to select Leonard Floyd. They felt the outside linebacker had the exact sort of skill set required to become a sack artist at the NFL level.

He didn’t disappoint, posting seven sacks in his rookie season. This despite missing four games with nagging injuries. His early success started drawing comparisons between him and another instant hit from a few years back in Aldon Smith. Time has proven that was a poor likeness, but when examining the 2017 draft class something did become clear.

There is a player in its midst that is the spitting image of the former All-Pro.

Javier Baez Continues To Be Amazing At The World Baseball Classic

Chicago Cubs fans get to see him all the time, but after breaking out in the 2016 postseason on the national stage, Javier Baez continues to be amazing in front of an international audience at the World Baseball Classic.

The Cubs have arguably the best middle infield in MLB with Addison Russell and Baez, but team Puerto Rico’s double-play combo of Francisco Lindor and Baez is baseball porn. On Saturday, the dazzling infielders battered Mexico’s pitchers with three home runs. Two came off the bat of Lindor and then Baez belted a three-run moonshot in the ninth inning to put his country well ahead at 9-4.

The home run was awesome, the reaction from Baez after crushing the ball was even better.

Taking a page out of Ben Zobrist’s playbook. Either that, or Baez saw Jake Arrieta’s recent comments about home run celebrations.

Anyway, Baez is unstoppable and he keeps doing Javy Baez things with Puerto Rico in the WBC.

Javier Baez, electric factory.

By the way, not really a fan of the WBC, but that Dominican Republic vs. USA game Saturday night was outstanding. The atmosphere and emotion of October baseball in the middle of March. Can’t do much better than that.

Back-to-back dingers off Andrew fucking Miller to erase a 5-0 deficit. Absolutely nuts, with Dominican Republic fans going crazy in Miami.

Complete pandemonium. Loved watching it.

Bears Receiving Corps Gets Another Jolt of Speed With This Deal

Step by step it’s becoming clear exactly what GM Ryan Pace is going for on the offensive side of the football. It first became apparent with the arrivals of Kevin White and Eddie Royal. Injuries though masked what the Chicago Bears were trying to do. Undaunted they’ve continued the same approach, first with Markus Wheaton and now with the latest addition to the wide receiving corps.

Once upon a time Kendall Wright was an intriguing first round pick of the Tennessee Titans. Though short, he was known for quickness, agility and above all speed. His second year in the NFL he broke out for over 1,000 yards. Since then though he’s regressed, suffering through a series of changes to the offense he was drafted into. Even so, that hasn’t stopped him from posting the impressive play from time to time.

Wright is the latest in a speed movement for the Bears on offense. Clearly they’re starting to mimic teams like Pittsburgh and New England. While they may lack for size at the position, covering them becomes a real headache due to their ability to create space and separation. Letting Alshon Jeffery walk may or may not have been planned, but it was clear he didn’t fit the vision of where Pace wants this offense to go.

He learned in New Orleans that speed is paramount to offensive success in the NFL. Wright will rejoin offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, the man responsible for getting that great year out of him in 2013 while running the Titans offense. If they can mesh like before, this will only help the Bears and their new quarterback.

White Sox Desperately Want To Trade Jose Quintana To This Team

The Jose Quintana trade rumors have died down significantly as Opening Day approaches. While things could change at any time, it appears as if the White Sox ace will enter the 2017 season on the South Side.

The teams interested in Quintana haven’t changed. The Astros and Pirates are still the favorites with teams like the Braves and Cardinals lurking in the bathroom.

Chicago’s asking price for Quintana hasn’t changed either. The team is looking for top prospects and will not accept pennies on the dollar for their star. While the South Siders are rebuilding, they aren’t going to trade just to trade.

The White Sox did get a bit of good news as Quintana proved just how good he is in his dominant World Baseball Classic debut. Quintana threw five no-hit innings for Colombia against a potent USA squad. He struck out four in an outing that Hall of Famer John Smoltz called, “the greatest performance in the first round of the WBC”.

While Quintana didn’t necessarily need to prove himself, he showed just how talented he really is. After his impressive showing, team’s should feel confident in trading their top young prospects for the Colombian star.

As teams once again line up for Quintana’s services, a new report states that the White Sox have a preferred team they would like to trade their ace to.

The New York Post’s George A. King III recently reported that the White Sox have been scouting the New York Yankees throughout Spring Training. He wrote:

Since a White Sox scout has been a constant figure at the Yankees’ exhibition games to evaluate talent, the industry buzz is the White Sox have targeted the Yankees as a possible trade partner if they decide to move left-handed starter Jose Quintana.

The Yankees showed interest in Quintana earlier this offseason. Apparently the feeling is mutual from the White Sox. If Rick Hahn got his way, Jose Quintana would be playing for the Bronx Bombers in 2017.

New York State Of Mind

According to Roster Resource the Yankees are expected to enter the season with a pitching rotation of: Masahrio Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda, Luis Severino and Chad Green.

Tanaka is the only surefire thing in the Yankees rotation. He has been lights out this Spring Training and looks to be a potential CY Young candidate in the American League. However the four pitchers behind Tanaka are far from consistent entities in the rotation.

Sabathia hasn’t had a winning record since 2013 and hasn’t had a sub 3.50 ERA since 2012. Going on 37 Sabathia is out to prove he still has some gas left in the tank. But it’s unlikely he even comes close to touching average #2 starter numbers.

Pineda had a remarkable 10.2 K/9 in 2016, but he had a 6-12 record with a 4.82 ERA. At just 28 he has the potential to turn it around. But Pineda’s inconsistencies have become a major problem and it’s hard to trust a pitcher like that come playoff time.

Severino provides the most upside out of all the pitchers outside of Tanaka. The 21 year old is only a few years off from being a top prospect himself. He had a stellar 5-3 record with a 2.89 ERA in 2015, but he fell off in 2016 pitching to a 3-8 record with a 5.83 ERA. The upcoming season will allow Severino to prove he could still be a contributor at the MLB. However going into the season Severino cannot be counted on to be a consistent starter.

Green has appeared in 12 major league games holding a 2-4 record with a 4.73 ERA. He is hanging on by a thread to be apart of the Yankees rotation.

The point here is that out of Tanaka, there is no consistency in the Yankees rotation. Quintana is the epitome of consistency, pitching atleast 200 innings with 150 strikeouts while holding a sub 3.60 ERA.

Tanaka and Quintana would form one of the best 1-2 punches in the MLB. As the Yankees look to make it back to the playoffs, adding the White Sox ace could be the quickest way to accomplish just that.

What Would It Cost?

King made it very clear that the Yankees were unwilling to trade: Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird, Gleyber Torres, Justus Sheffield or Aaron Judge. While making so much young talent untouchable could be a dangerous marketing ploy, New York would still have enough young prospects to get a deal done.

A few names that stand out in particular are Clint Frazier, Jorge Mateo, James Kaprielian and Blake Rutherford.

Frazier is currently the Yankees second best prospect and the 24th best prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. He has appeared in 416 minor league games, hitting .275 with 50 home runs, 205 RBIs and 43 stolen bases.

Frazier is one of the best pure hitters in the minor leagues. He offers 30+ home run potential with a fair amount of speed. He would be an offensive juggernaut in the team’s lineup and a cornerstone piece of the franchise for years to come.

Mateo is currently the Yankees fifth best prospect and the 47th best prospect in baseball. He has appeared in 323 minor league games, hitting .270 with 18 home runs, 122 RBIs and 182 stolen bases.

Mateo’s weapon is obviously his speed. Putting him in the same lineup as Tim Anderson, Charlie Tilson and Yoan Moncada would put the White Sox towards the top of the league in stolen bases. Mateo would likely need to change his position as short stop and second base is occupied, but Rick Renteria would be forced to get Mateo’s legs in the lineup one way or another.

Kaprielian is the Yankees sixth best prospect and the 58th best prospect in baseball. He has appeared in just 7 games and 29 innings, holding a 2-2 record with a 1.55 ERA and a 36/5 K/BB ratio.

The pitcher needs much more time in the minor leagues, as he is just 23 years old. But he has shown elite stuff during the early portions of his career. Kaprielian’s ceiling is ever growing and he could into one of the best pitchers in the White Sox rotation. Adding him to Carlos Rodon, Lucas Giolito, Carson Fulmer, Michael Kopech and Reynaldo Lopez would without a doubt give the Sox the best pitching staff in the major leagues.

Rutherford is the Yankees third best prospect and the 37th best prospect in baseball. He has appeared in just 33 minor league games, hitting .351 with three home runs and 12 RBIs.

Rutherford is just 19 and needs much more time to mature. But the White Sox reportedly had him high on their draft boards and could still be interested. He’s a pure hitter with a solid power stroke. Rutherford would give the White Sox another impressive hitter to pair with Moncada in the middle of their lineup.

Atleast one of these four players would need to be involved to get Quintana. Regardless of which one the White Sox land, he would be one of the best prospects on the South Side and a stalwart in either the team’s lineup or rotation.

Overall

Rick Hahn is not going to only deal with the Yankees. If a team like the Astros or Pirates offers a deal that blows him away, he’ll have to accept. The point of dealing Quintana is getting the best value available.

With that being said, it’s not surprising that the White Sox view the Yankees as their preferred landing spot. New York has a surplus of top prospects and a clear need for Quintana. If the Yankees are in the playoff hunt by the Trade Deadline, they could look to deal for the ace.

As for the White Sox, adding atleast one of Clint Frazier, Jorge Mateo, James Kaprielian or Blake Ruthefordd would be a great haul. As the team continues to rebuild, adding more top 100 prospects only makes their 2019-2020 outlook better.

The Jose Quintana sweepstakes are far from over, and it’s unclear where he will finish the 2017 season. However if the White Sox got their way, he would be playing in the Big Apple for the Bronx Bombers while the South Siders continue adding young, impressive talent.
