Ian Happ Hit Another Monster Home Run For The Cubs

Entering spring training the one prospect everyone was talking about in Chicago Cubs camp was Eloy Jimenez. It was deserving too. Jimenez is their No.1 prospect, but Ian Happ is making sure people know he’s pretty damn good too, hammering baseballs all over the Arizona desert.

The 22-year-old hit another home run on Monday, Happ’s third blast so far in spring training.

If Mike Glennon Is The Bridge QB, This Is Who The Bears Will Draft

mike glennon bridge

There is no longer any debate that Mike Glennon is the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears. Ryan Pace said so during the introductory press conference. It was almost impossible to misinterpret them. He’s excited about giving the former Buccaneers backup a shot to prove he was misused back in 2013 and 2014 when he started 18 games.

The question for fans isn’t whether Glennon starts. It’s for how long. Many remain skeptical that he becomes anything more than just a competent game manager. Somebody who makes a few nice throws, doesn’t turn the ball over and feeds the running game. Good perhaps for the regular season, but few such types win a championship these days.

That of course remains the end game for Chicago. It’s why there is widespread belief that Glennon is merely a “bridge” option. Somebody who keeps the seat warm until the actual driver is ready to go. If this is true, it raises suspicion that the Bears may have that somebody in mind. After all, there is still one slot open on the quarterback depth chart.

Blackhawks Sign Anthony Louis To Entry Level Contract

In the wake of the college hockey season, the Chicago Blackhawks have gotten busy signing their 2013 draft picks. The latest player to sign a two-year entry-level deal is Anthony Louis of Miami (Ohio) University, according to Scott Powers’ sources.

Like yesterday’s signing of John Hayden, Louis declined signing after his junior season. His decision led to the best season of his collegiate career. Louis amassed career highs in goals (14) and assists (25).

The 5’8″ 160lb center has Chicago ties as well. He grew up in Winfield, Il and played for the Chicago Mission and Team Illinois.

It hasn’t been announced if he will join the team like Hayden yet. Stay tuned for more updates.

Jimmy Butler’s Tone Deaf Karaoke Will Make You Want To Rip Your Ears Off

As Jimmy Butler’s basketball fame grows, so does his reputation for being a real music enthusiast. The Bulls All Star recently shared the cover of ESPN’s magazine with Chicago-raised Grammy winner Chance the Rapper. He also has a well-known affinity for country pop star Taylor Swift. When Butler and his USA Olympic teammate Kyrie Irving jammed out to Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” on one of their flights last summer, some teammates were more amused than others. Jimmy doesn’t just love music, he thinks he’s really talented.

Soul, No Talent

Butler recently sat down with ESPN’s Sam Alipour for a Q&A about his taste in music. The setting? None other than Trader Todd’s, one of Chicago’s most popular karaoke bars in the Lakeview neighborhood. Speaking as a Lakeview resident, I’m very familiar with Trader Todd’s. It’s a fun place to spend a weekend evening if you don’t mind sticky floors and an aroma resembling a blend of vomit, urine and beer sweat.

Butler chats with Alipour about his preferred genres, and it’s a pretty eclectic library. R&B and country top the list, but Jimmy wasn’t ashamed to admit he’s a Belieber, too. Just as much as the basketball player enjoys listening to all kinds of music, he relishes his opportunities to sing like nobody’s listening. Unfortunately for Jimmy, the patrons at Todd’s on that early March evening probably wished they weren’t listening.

Butler takes the stage for a solo performance of R&B artist August Alsina’s “Nobody Knows.” Then, he welcomes Alipour onstage for a duet of the country band Florida Georgia Line’s “H.O.L.Y.” In both numbers, Jimmy’s true passion for the meaning behind the words shines through. But singing on pitch and in the right key?

…Woof. Not so much.

False Modesty

It took a lot of confidence for Butler to get where he is now. The unknown junior college player didn’t get much draft attention even after a solid career at Marquette. The 30th overall pick in 2011 saw very little playing time as a rookie. Now, he’s a three-time All Star coming off his first selection as a starter in the exhibition game. Confidence can take you far, but it can’t help you all that much when you’re tone deaf.

“When I hear myself sing – and it’s not recorded and played back to me – when I’m singing, I really think I sound really good. Like, top notch. Until somebody plays it back to me or I see it, and I’m like [nonverbal disgust].” – Jimmy Butler

At least Jimmy knows he’s not going to win a Grammy anytime soon. That’s why, if given the option, he’d choose fellow NBA All Star and Olympic teammate DeAndre Jordan to collaborate on an album.

“DeAndre Jordan, without a doubt. Because I sing so much better than he does. That’s going to make me sound that much better.” – Jimmy Butler

If Butler insists his singing sounds great compared to DeAndre’s, let us all hope and pray that we never hear that collaborative album. Because I’m not sure what’s worse: subjecting my eyes to the Bulls in their current losing streak or subjecting my ears to their best player’s vocal performances.

Don’t quit your day job, Jimmy.

Turns Out The Bears Actually Were Favorites For Jimmy Garoppolo

There are no further questions. The Chicago Bears have their starting quarterback for the 2017 season. GM Ryan Pace didn’t mince words on that subject. Ready or not, Mike Glennon is the man this year. The one who will take up the mantle of Jay Cutler, whom fans still have mixed feeling about. How should one feel about losing a quarterback who broke every franchise passing record but had just one playoff appearance in eight seasons?

Suffice to say Glennon comes in with a lot to prove. He wants to show he can succeed where Cutler failed, while also rewriting the narrative that he’s just a failed draft pick who became a backup. Like it or not, that’s what it looks like after he went 5-13 as a starter. Then losing his job to Jameis Winston. The hope is better protection and help around him will flip the script.

What many still wonder (or lament at this point) is what could’ve been regarding other moves to make. There was the draft of course and it’s still possible they grab somebody there. However, most of the questions center around the bold move they didn’t make. One that couldn’t brought a native son home to on a white horse.

The Biggest Bears Free Agency Steal Isn’t Who You Think It Is

The Chicago Bears free agency tour rolls on. Odds are they’re not done making moves before the NFL draft in April, but most of the big ones are in the past. At this point the discussion inevitably shifts to who they got and whether or not the team did a good job. Not just in terms of talent but also value. Did they overpay or get a bargain?

By far the biggest contract they handed out was to quarterback Mike Glennon. Not a surprise given the position he plays. There is also tight end Dion Sims, a stout blocker and underrated pass catcher. Veteran safety Quintin Demps and cornerbacks Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper help to bolster an undermanned secondary on defense.

Even the sneaky addition of receiver Kendall Wright was met with praise. However, none of them could end up being quite the gem as another addition. One that seems so benign now but may have massive repercussions in the near future.

Chicago Bears Free Agency Attack Reveals Likely Plan For #3 Pick

bears draft solomon thomas

There was a mass panic among Chicago Bears fans after the first day of NFL free agency. While other teams were making big, headline news with their signings, they were left sitting around waiting. Their team had promised to come out swinging. They had plenty of salary cap space and a growing young core of intriguing talent. Yet time after time it looked like they were stymied.

In the space of just 24 hours the entire fan base went from hopeful to the near launch of an uprising. One of the most important days of the year and all they get is a pricey contract for an unproven former backup quarterback. Thankfully things began to calm down by the second and third days. Quality additions at decent prices began to show up, bringing people back to sanity.

Amidst this haul of new bodies, people may not be noticing an odd trend. Not so much about the players being added or the positions they play. More it’s about the positions they don’t play. Intentional or not, this minor revelation could have major implications about what Chicago has planned next month in Philadelphia.

Shitty Bulls Just Put Up The Worst First-Half In The NBA

I’ll be honest guys, I have not watched much Chicago Bulls basketball as of late and I’m better for it. The Bulls don’t deserve your attention, but this was too hilarious to pass up. On Sunday, the vomit inducing Bulls had the shittiest first-half of the season. Not just bad for them, but for all of the NBA.

This was some embarrassing stuff and I’m glad the Bulls are on national TV, so that more people are exposed to the garbage we’ve had to put up with. The Bulls only scored 26 points in the first half against the Boston Celtics, setting a new record low for the season.

https://twitter.com/_MarcusD2_/status/841023512492068865

Here’s how the Bulls started Sunday’s game.

Fred Hoiberg is terrible. The players are terrible. The front office is terrible. Trash all around this organization.

Second half isn’t getting any better.

To say the Bulls suck is the understatement of the year. Burn it all down.

Anthony Rizzo Hits Ball, Cracks Oakland A’s Press Box Window

Normally we get cracked windshields on cars during spring training, Kyle Schwarber knows all about that, but Anthony Rizzo made his mark on Sunday, cranking a press box window against the Oakland A’s.
