White Sox Desperately Want To Trade Jose Quintana To This Team

The Jose Quintana trade rumors have died down significantly as Opening Day approaches. While things could change at any time, it appears as if the White Sox ace will enter the 2017 season on the South Side.

The teams interested in Quintana haven’t changed. The Astros and Pirates are still the favorites with teams like the Braves and Cardinals lurking in the bathroom.

Chicago’s asking price for Quintana hasn’t changed either. The team is looking for top prospects and will not accept pennies on the dollar for their star. While the South Siders are rebuilding, they aren’t going to trade just to trade.

The White Sox did get a bit of good news as Quintana proved just how good he is in his dominant World Baseball Classic debut. Quintana threw five no-hit innings for Colombia against a potent USA squad. He struck out four in an outing that Hall of Famer John Smoltz called, “the greatest performance in the first round of the WBC”.

While Quintana didn’t necessarily need to prove himself, he showed just how talented he really is. After his impressive showing, team’s should feel confident in trading their top young prospects for the Colombian star.

As teams once again line up for Quintana’s services, a new report states that the White Sox have a preferred team they would like to trade their ace to.

The New York Post’s George A. King III recently reported that the White Sox have been scouting the New York Yankees throughout Spring Training. He wrote:

Since a White Sox scout has been a constant figure at the Yankees’ exhibition games to evaluate talent, the industry buzz is the White Sox have targeted the Yankees as a possible trade partner if they decide to move left-handed starter Jose Quintana.

The Yankees showed interest in Quintana earlier this offseason. Apparently the feeling is mutual from the White Sox. If Rick Hahn got his way, Jose Quintana would be playing for the Bronx Bombers in 2017.

New York State Of Mind

According to Roster Resource the Yankees are expected to enter the season with a pitching rotation of: Masahrio Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda, Luis Severino and Chad Green.

Tanaka is the only surefire thing in the Yankees rotation. He has been lights out this Spring Training and looks to be a potential CY Young candidate in the American League. However the four pitchers behind Tanaka are far from consistent entities in the rotation.

Sabathia hasn’t had a winning record since 2013 and hasn’t had a sub 3.50 ERA since 2012. Going on 37 Sabathia is out to prove he still has some gas left in the tank. But it’s unlikely he even comes close to touching average #2 starter numbers.

Pineda had a remarkable 10.2 K/9 in 2016, but he had a 6-12 record with a 4.82 ERA. At just 28 he has the potential to turn it around. But Pineda’s inconsistencies have become a major problem and it’s hard to trust a pitcher like that come playoff time.

Severino provides the most upside out of all the pitchers outside of Tanaka. The 21 year old is only a few years off from being a top prospect himself. He had a stellar 5-3 record with a 2.89 ERA in 2015, but he fell off in 2016 pitching to a 3-8 record with a 5.83 ERA. The upcoming season will allow Severino to prove he could still be a contributor at the MLB. However going into the season Severino cannot be counted on to be a consistent starter.

Green has appeared in 12 major league games holding a 2-4 record with a 4.73 ERA. He is hanging on by a thread to be apart of the Yankees rotation.

The point here is that out of Tanaka, there is no consistency in the Yankees rotation. Quintana is the epitome of consistency, pitching atleast 200 innings with 150 strikeouts while holding a sub 3.60 ERA.

Tanaka and Quintana would form one of the best 1-2 punches in the MLB. As the Yankees look to make it back to the playoffs, adding the White Sox ace could be the quickest way to accomplish just that.

What Would It Cost?

King made it very clear that the Yankees were unwilling to trade: Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird, Gleyber Torres, Justus Sheffield or Aaron Judge. While making so much young talent untouchable could be a dangerous marketing ploy, New York would still have enough young prospects to get a deal done.

A few names that stand out in particular are Clint Frazier, Jorge Mateo, James Kaprielian and Blake Rutherford.

Frazier is currently the Yankees second best prospect and the 24th best prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. He has appeared in 416 minor league games, hitting .275 with 50 home runs, 205 RBIs and 43 stolen bases.

Frazier is one of the best pure hitters in the minor leagues. He offers 30+ home run potential with a fair amount of speed. He would be an offensive juggernaut in the team’s lineup and a cornerstone piece of the franchise for years to come.

Mateo is currently the Yankees fifth best prospect and the 47th best prospect in baseball. He has appeared in 323 minor league games, hitting .270 with 18 home runs, 122 RBIs and 182 stolen bases.

Mateo’s weapon is obviously his speed. Putting him in the same lineup as Tim Anderson, Charlie Tilson and Yoan Moncada would put the White Sox towards the top of the league in stolen bases. Mateo would likely need to change his position as short stop and second base is occupied, but Rick Renteria would be forced to get Mateo’s legs in the lineup one way or another.

Kaprielian is the Yankees sixth best prospect and the 58th best prospect in baseball. He has appeared in just 7 games and 29 innings, holding a 2-2 record with a 1.55 ERA and a 36/5 K/BB ratio.

The pitcher needs much more time in the minor leagues, as he is just 23 years old. But he has shown elite stuff during the early portions of his career. Kaprielian’s ceiling is ever growing and he could into one of the best pitchers in the White Sox rotation. Adding him to Carlos Rodon, Lucas Giolito, Carson Fulmer, Michael Kopech and Reynaldo Lopez would without a doubt give the Sox the best pitching staff in the major leagues.

Rutherford is the Yankees third best prospect and the 37th best prospect in baseball. He has appeared in just 33 minor league games, hitting .351 with three home runs and 12 RBIs.

Rutherford is just 19 and needs much more time to mature. But the White Sox reportedly had him high on their draft boards and could still be interested. He’s a pure hitter with a solid power stroke. Rutherford would give the White Sox another impressive hitter to pair with Moncada in the middle of their lineup.

Atleast one of these four players would need to be involved to get Quintana. Regardless of which one the White Sox land, he would be one of the best prospects on the South Side and a stalwart in either the team’s lineup or rotation.

Overall

Rick Hahn is not going to only deal with the Yankees. If a team like the Astros or Pirates offers a deal that blows him away, he’ll have to accept. The point of dealing Quintana is getting the best value available.

With that being said, it’s not surprising that the White Sox view the Yankees as their preferred landing spot. New York has a surplus of top prospects and a clear need for Quintana. If the Yankees are in the playoff hunt by the Trade Deadline, they could look to deal for the ace.

As for the White Sox, adding atleast one of Clint Frazier, Jorge Mateo, James Kaprielian or Blake Ruthefordd would be a great haul. As the team continues to rebuild, adding more top 100 prospects only makes their 2019-2020 outlook better.

The Jose Quintana sweepstakes are far from over, and it’s unclear where he will finish the 2017 season. However if the White Sox got their way, he would be playing in the Big Apple for the Bronx Bombers while the South Siders continue adding young, impressive talent.

Bears Keep Quietly Upgrading Secondary With Pro Bowl CB

marcus cooper bears

Ryan Pace may not be known for his early reactions in NFL free agency but the man has become a master during the second and third waves. He just has that knack for being able to find players of value. Players who bring something to the table that the Chicago Bears didn’t have the year before but at a team-friendly cost.

He’s at it again. Not too long after signing veteran cornerback Prince Amukamara to a new one-year deal, the Bears struck again. This time they secured a three-year contract with 27-year old Pro Bowl alternate Marcus Cooper.

Cooper is a former seventh round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers. He has a connection to Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. After a roller coaster time in Kansas City, he eventually landed with the Arizona Cardinals. There he resurrected his career with four interceptions in 2016, showcasing the athletic coverage and ball skills people saw him capable of. No doubt this development didn’t make Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians happy.

Suddenly a cornerback group that looked completely overmatched last season is starting to gain some credibility.  Cooper is a tremendous fit for their scheme. Together with Amukamara they bring a little more experience and reliability. If nothing else it’s a major step in the right direction. It also opens up so much more flexibility for the Bears going into the NFL draft.

A Marcus Cooper Bears jersey will look so much better in navy blue than his traditional red.

This Story of Mike Glennon Rivalry With Russell Wilson Is Phenomenal

Mike Glennon doesn’t come across as a competitive person. Maybe it’s even-keel personality or the fact he’s been a backup for so long that people can’t take the idea seriously. He’s a humble, hard-working man viewed as a good soldier who does the job asked of him. Sounds nice in the greater scheme of society. Does that make him a potential good NFL quarterback?

Suffice to say many around the league and in the greater Chicago area are skeptical. They wonder why the Bears are wasting their time and money on this fools errand. Glennon is an average player who belongs on the bench. Is he though? Many teammates and coaches swear by his ability. Respect film experts are encouraged by his skill set.

Then there is his quiet history of competitiveness. It didn’t always seem obvious at times, but it was there. A drive to be better than everybody who got in his way. Perhaps nothing reflected that better than a rivalry he had with eventual three-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson.

How The Bears’ Mike Glennon Deal Could Be Strategically Brilliant

Not much has changed for Chicago Bears fans regarding the quarterback position. Even with Jay Cutler gone, they are deeply divided on the subject. The signing of Mike Glennon has been met with everything from intrigue and hope to outright revulsion and despair. It’s either a crafty attempt by the team to uncover a hidden gem or a colossal waste of time and money better spent elsewhere.

Such is the reality of being fans of a team that hasn’t fielded a Pro Bowl quarterback in three decades. By far the longest streak in the NFL. GM Ryan Pace didn’t make any promises regarding the future on Glennon. He merely stated the team was excited about giving the 27-year old an opportunity. Glennon himself sounds relaxed, confident and ready for it.

What’s interesting about this situation isn’t necessarily the plans for 2017. Those seem pretty much set. It’s how the Bears might be able to play things next year. What does that mean? The answer lay in what they do in the draft and how the contract of their new starting quarterback is structured.

Kyle Schwarber Agrees To Terms With Cubs

A day after the Chicago Cubs made Kris Bryant the highest-earning, pre-arbitration player in MLB history, another 2017 salary was revealed. Kyle Schwarber has agreed on terms for this season’s salary, which will be $565,500.

Here are other notable salaries for the 2017 season.

As a reminder, Bryant’s deal for this year is worth $1.05 million, which broke Mike Trout’s 2014 record of $1 million.

Eagles Fan ‘EDP’ Twerks After Philly Lands Alshon Jeffery

Just three minutes after NFL Free Agency opened, Alshon Jefferey made his decision to leave the Chicago Bears and join the Philadelphia Eagles, signing a 1-year $14 million dollar deal.

Jefferey was then quick to say why he made his decision:

“It was the best decision for me and my family. Also, it’s a great situation,” he told CSN Philly. “[Carson Wentz] had a lot to do with my decision. He’s a great quarterback. I mean, the sky’s the limit for him, I think he’s going to be a future MVP.”

Well, OK then.

H/t to Terez Owens for this, haha.

My personal favorite was EDP losing his shit after the Eagles trade LeSean McCoy.

Kyle Schwarber Is Out Here Making Leaping Catches For The Cubs

Kyle Schwarber’s been unfairly tagged as a buffoon playing in left field. He had an embarrassing game in the 2015 NLCS against the New York Mets and ever since then no one can take Schwarber seriously in the field. Well damnit, he’s not that bad and that’s all the Chicago Cubs need him to be in left field.

Yes, ideally the Cubs would have a better defensive player in left, but let’s not pretend Schwarber is completely helpless either. Really, I just wanted to share this leaping catch he made on Thursday against the Seattle Mariners.

Need more of that and less of this.

But even if that does occasionally happen, we can count on a lot of this.

Bears Snag The Cover Corner They So Desperately Need

prince amukamara bears

The Chicago Bears knew going into the 2017 offseason that one of their most critical job was finding a way to upgrade the secondary. It was by far their biggest weakness on defense and perhaps their biggest on the entire roster. Not surprising when the makeup of the unit was older veterans like Tracey Porter, underwhelming projects like Adrian Amos and unproven rookies like Cre’Von LeBlanc and Deon Bush.

Somebody had to be signed who could bring some credibility to the back end. Someone who could take some of the pressure off the front seven while also adding more juice to the teams’ ability to provide stable coverage. Chicago finished with just 11 total takeaways, a franchise worst. It seems they’ve pinpointed the man they want for that job in cornerback Prince Amukamara.

He’s no superstar, but he helps them take a gigantic step in the right direction. His coverage is steady and if given a solid pass rush he’s shown an ability to force turnovers. Put in the hands of Vic Fangio, this could be a quality move. Amukamara had at least 10 passes defended and an interception in each of his last three years with the New York Giants. He earned a 76.1 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus. For context that would be three points better than any of the current corners on the Bears roster.

Now if the team can add more pieces around him, they’ll be in business. A Prince Amukamara Bears marriage should be interesting, if nothing else.

Jay Cutler Sends Heartfelt Message To Chicago After Bears Exit

Nobody ever said Jay Cutler was perfect. He had a personality that took some getting used to. Some things he did on Sundays for the Chicago Bears caused TVs to get broken by fists, feet and flying projectiles. Nevertheless he exits after eight seasons as the all-time franchise leader in passing yards, touchdowns and regular season wins in the Super Bowl era.

Could it have been better? Sure. The Bears did a poor job of building around him what with the bad offensive lines and the constant upheaval with the coaching staff. At the same time he deserves his share of the blame. He made a lot of poor decisions that resulted in some crippling defeats. His leadership was always called into question.

Even so he was a man respected and loved by many teammates who played with him. Several fans also can’t help but feel sad. They know it could’ve been great had things been different. Instead the Bears have released the 33-year old after eight seasons.

Is he bitter? No. In fact he took time to deliver a letter thanking the team and the city for the opportunity and the memories.

Cutler no doubt will seek an opportunity elsewhere. Early reports are the New York Jets have interest. Still, when his career draws to a close most people will remember him most for his roller coaster ride in Chicago. There were laughs. There were tears. Most of all there was plenty of excitement every time he stepped on the field. He was also a class act, never firing back at those who took shots in the media. Always an active member on the charity front.

He’s a role model that many more celebrated NFL stars are not. Over time his star is sure to rise for the good player but better person he was.

Mike Glennon Contract Details Make Bears Draft Plans Crystal Clear

mike glennon contract

The Jay Cutler era has officially come to a close for the Chicago Bears. After eight seasons the 33-year was grated his release. In his wake was left a legacy great highs and great lows. He’s the quarterback who scored four touchdowns in a playoff game and carried his team to an NFC championship. He is the quarterback who holds the franchise records for passing yards and touchdowns. Yet he’s also the one who threw the second-most interceptions.

Cutler was the epitome of a gunslinger. When he was hot, it was so much fun to watch. When it wasn’t, it was cringe-inducing. Finally in 2016 the Bears finally soured on it all. He hadn’t started a full season healthy since his first year in 2009. He had more interceptions than touchdowns. Everything signaled that it was time for a fresh start.

Nobody in the world thought that it would be Mike Glennon filling those shoes. Already there is a mass panic that the Bears have completely lost their minds. Conspiracy theories are running rampant about what they could be thinking. In truth, the situation isn’t all that complex. One must merely examine the numbers.
