White Sox Offense Goes Quiet In Loss to Cleveland

TA back in the lineup and he starts the first with a single to shallow center field on the first pitch from Aaron Civale.

Adam Eaton singles to right field and tries to go to second. He gets called out and then the benches clear following this play as Andres Gimenez makes contact with Eaton, forcing him off the bag.

Play stands, Eaton out at second.

Jose Abreu strikes out swinging.

Yoan Moncada dumps a single to center on a 3-2 pitch. Anderson scores and the White Sox lead 1-0.

Yermin Mercedes with a pop-fly to right-center to end the first.

Lynn strikes out Austin Hedges with a cutter that got him swinging.

Another fastball gets a whiff. Gimenez strikes out swinging.

Rosario strikes out swinging and that’s six strikeouts for Lynn through three innings.

Eaton leads off with a HBP. Kinda stuck that elbow out.

Abreu called out on strikes.

Moncada grounds out to first, Eaton goes to second.

Mercedes rips a line drive right to the left fielder.

Hernandez singles to right-center.

A high pop-fly falls in center between Robert and Anderson, but the Sox are able to get Hernandez at second as he was stuck between first and second.

Rosario lines out hard to Eaton in right field.

Reyes strikes out swinging on a high fastball.

Grandal gets ahead 3-0, but slams his bat in frustration after popping up behind second base on a 3-2 pitch.

Robert slaps a slider to right-center for a single.

Vaughn flies out to center.

Madrigal shoots a sinking liner to right, but Naylor races in and makes a running catch.

Naylor fouls out to Moncada, who makes a nice catch near the stands down the line behind third base.

Lynn strikes out Bauers swinging. Another high fastball.

Hedges pops up to Madrigal in shallow right field. Lynn cruising along.

Anderson goes after a fastball up and in. Strikes out swinging.

Eaton grounds out to first base.

Abreu works a full count and walks.

Moncada bounces out to first.

Top 6

Gimenez misses a homer by a couple feet, but he a gets grounds-rule double to right-center as the ball bounces over the wall.

Rosario with a slower grounder to Madrigal. Gimenez moves to third. White Sox bringing their infield in.

The strike zone is wide and Lynn takes advantage, striking out Hernandez on an outside pitch.

Lynn challenges Ramirez with a fastball and he didn’t get it up high enough. Ramirez crushes a 2-run home run to right field. Cleveland takes a 2-1 lead.

Rosario lines a single to right field.

Reyes strikes out swinging and Lynn gets out of the sixth without any more damage. Crochet was warming up, so Lynn’s day is most likely done.

Mercedes grounds out to third.

Grandal grounds out to second.

Robert pops up to second and Civale has an easy sixth inning.

Top 7

Lefty Garrett Crochet now pitching for the White Sox.

Naylor with a slow grounder up the middle, Madrigal cuts in front of Anderson and can’t throw out Naylor, who gets credit for an infield single.

Bauers singles to left.

Hedges drops down a sac-bunt, advancing runners to second and third.

Gimenez hits a ground ball to Moncada. Naylor scores and Cleveland goes up 3-1.

Michael Kopech now comes in to pitch for the White Sox.

Rosario flies out to right field.

Score: Cleveland 3, White Sox 1

Bottom 7

Nick Wittgren now pitching for Cleveland.

Vaughn grounds out to shortstop.

Madrigal lines out to right field.

Anderson grounds a ball to the right side, the first baseman fields it and then has no play. Anderson reaches safely.

Eaton called out on strikes.

Top 8

Hernandez drops down a bunt and reaches safely with a single as Moncada’s throw gets past Abreu.

Kopech with a wild pitch that allows Hernandez to move to second. Tough one on Kopech as Grandal should have easily blocked it.

Ramirez hits a grounder to Abreu, who can’t field it cleanly and then throws it past Kopech. Hernandez scores to make it 4-1 and Ramirez goes to second.

Kopech missing his spots and he walks Rosario.

Reyes smashes it to left where Vaughn makes a great catch to rob Cleveland of at least one more run.

Ramirez steals third base.

Naylor strikes out looking on an inside fastball.

Rosario steals second.

Kopech strikes out Bauers swinging on a fastball to end the top half of the eighth.

James Karinchak now pitching for Cleveland.

Abreu strikes out swinging on a high fastball.

Moncada chases a high fastball and he strikes out swinging.

Mercedes with a pop-fly in shallow left-center and it falls in the middle of three Cleveland defenders for a double.

Grandal fouls out to Ramirez in front of the White Sox dugout.

Top 9

Jose Ruiz now pitching for the White Sox.

Hedges strikes out swinging.

Gimenez strikes out swinging.

Ben Gamel lines out to Eaton in right field.

Emmanuel Clase now pitching for Cleveland.

Robert lines a ball to the corner in right, Naylor gives up on it after it bounces off the side-netting and Robert easily makes it to third for a leadoff triple.

Vaughn strikes out swinging.

Jake Lamb pinch-hits for Nick Madrigal.

Lamb bounces one back to Clase, who makes the play after the ball initially bounced out of his glove. Robert stays at third.

Anderson grounds one to Gimenez, who bobbles it and allows Anderson to reach and Robert scores. Eaton is now the tying run.

Eaton flies out to left-center.

So, the four-game series ends in a split. Lynn just ran out of gas and Ramirez made him pay. Cleveland may not have a scary lineup, but they can still give you fits with that pitching staff.
