One thing about the NFL draft is it never lacks intrigue. Expect the unexpected should be its slogan. That is why fans love watching it so much. You never know what could happen, especially when trades are involved. There has never been a shortage of bold moves in the 1st round over the years. While not a regular occurrence, it isn’t crazy to see one team jump from the bottom of the 1st round to the top for a player they covet. Atlanta went from 26th overall to 6th in 2011 for Julio Jones. Maybe somebody might try doing the same for the Chicago Bears’ 9th overall pick.
NFL.com thinks that is a possibility. They put out a trade possibility that has sent one fanbase into a spiral of confusion and rage. It involves the Bears sending the 9th pick to the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. In exchange, they receive the 32nd pick, the Chiefs’ 2nd rounder this year, 4th rounder this year, and 1st rounder in 2025. That would push the Bears’ overall capital in 2024 to seven and give them two 1st and two 2nd round picks next year. Kansas City would then draft Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, hoping to secure the successor to future Hall of Famer Travis Kelce, who turns 35 in October.
Safe to say Chiefs fans didn’t receive the idea too well.
Would the Chicago Bears even entertain this? Probably not.
On the surface, it feels like a nice get for them. However, a closer inspection suggests that the offer isn’t enough. The Chiefs are the reigning champs. There is no chance that the future 1st round pick is anywhere close to the top half of the 1st round next year. It is most likely somewhere in the mid-20s at least. That decreases the value. The 2nd round pick is more of a high 3rd rounder as well. Besides, GM Ryan Poles would know his chances of landing a true difference-maker drastically decrease at the 32nd spot.

If Kansas City truly wanted Bowers, they’d have to offer more. That is something their GM won’t do. While Brett Veach isn’t shy about being aggressive, moving up that high for a tight end doesn’t seem like his style. Besides, the Chicago Bears are likely to have other suitors for the 9th pick who sit in a more reasonable range between picks #12 and #18. The Chiefs might move up in the 1st round, but it won’t be that high. Still, it’s a fun discussion to have.

OK, I’m curious – most people here agree we need help on both lines, right? So, if you take this trade, you have the 32nd, the 64th(?), a 4th rounder, and a 2025 1st. You then take the 4th you just received, and the 32nd, and maybe Khalil Herbert, and trade back up the board into the 20’s. There should be lots of guys here, like JPJ at Center. You then take the 64th, and add the Chief’s 2025 1st, and trade up as far as possible in this draft for a 3 Tech, or a DE… Wouldn’t that solve… Read more »
If the bears made that trade, I would pick up @TGena personally and go burn a cross in front of Ryan Poles home.(tongue firmly in cheek)
Our passing game has to improve strictly because we will actually be putting the ball in play more. Even the threat of Scott running a vertical is going to make the defense have to account for him.
We don’t need to spend big for a WR at this time, That’s next year. We just need to add a couple more vertical threats to open up the underneath for DJ, Kmet, and Swift. The scouts need to do their job and find a 4th rounder that we can develop into a WR1.
@jmscooby – You are right on the money. I think the most important of those guys to step up is Dexter. The most intriguing to me is Collin Johnson. That kid can play, and he is a big bodied receiver type. If we don’t upgrade WR in the draft, which would be a mistake IMO, I can see CJ getting more and more reps over Scott and Velus. Velus could have trouble making the team honestly.
