Chicago Bears Keep Ignoring This Vital Key To Great Defense

All Chicago Bears fans are united in one thing. They desperately want to avoid seeing another 3-13 debacle like they did this 2016 season. Some are even willing to settle for 8-8 or even 7-9 next year. Where the disagreements have begun to show among them is in how the team is going to go about ensuring such an improvement.

Some believe the team sorely needs to find a quarterback what with Jay Cutler, Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley providing few answers. While others would prefer a return to the classic Bears style of winning:  run the ball and play great defense. With Jordan Howard in place the team already has one part of the formula. Now they just need to get the defense up to snuff.

The problem is the franchise continues to make a consistent mistake in their methods to rebuild the once proud unit. A mistake that has become magnified over the past seven years. The time has come for it to be corrected.

WATCH: Toews Shows Off His All-Star Caliber Puck Handling Skills

Jonathan Toews doesn’t show off very often while playing with the Chicago Blackhawks, but that doesn’t mean he can’t. In this video, the eight time all-star shows off his tricks to promote a Canadian Tire commercial filmed at Johnny’s IceHouse. His numbers may not be great this season but that doesn’t mean he still isn’t a ridiculously great hockey player.

It’s too bad no one in Chicago can’t win this contest though. You have to be a legal resident of Canada, but share it with your friends up north.

Top QB Prospect Already Has a Chicago Bears Connection

The Chicago Bears know they have a monumentally important decision ahead of them in the spring. This is the first year in a long time where it looks like a change is at hand for the quarterback position. Jay Cutler was the undisputed starter since 2009 but years of underachievement and injuries have finally broken his hold on the job.

GM Ryan Pace has put off the decision at quarterback for two years, partly to rebuild the rest of the roster but also take a long look to see if Cutler was the guy. He seems to have an answer now, and a clear course of action ahead. Chicago will spent the entire 2017 off-season searching for their next starter.

Chief among the long list of names who have been mentioned more than once already? Clemson star Deshaun Watson. Fresh off his national championship victory, the junior is already preparing his next step. The crafty part is it involves enlisting help from somebody with ties to the Bears. Shorthanded Bulls Falls To Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah & The Knicks

If you’re forced to start Paul Zipser, it’s probably going to be a rough night. No offense to the rookie from Germany, whom the Bulls drafted in the 2nd round last year. But until Thursday night, Zipser hadn’t played a single non-garbage time minute this season. Jimmy Butler was back in Chicago, nursing himself back to health. The same bug that took down Jimmy then hit Nikola Mirotic, who flew home after their game in DC on Tuesday. Rookie Denzel Valentine, who had a career-high 19 points in that loss to the Wizards, succumbed to a stomach bug after this morning’s shootaround. Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg didn’t have many options.

All things considered, it could have been much worse. Thankfully they were in New York playing an equally uninspiring Knicks team. Dwyane Wade also returned to the lineup after sitting out the second night of their back to back on Tuesday. Wade led his team with 22 points, but the Bulls lost the Knicks 104-89.

The Bulls’ role players stepped up in the absence of Butler, Mirotic and Valentine. Zipser looked decent in his 34 minutes, tallying 7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. He even induced superstar Carmelo Anthony into a travelling violation in one strong defensive sequence. Second year guard Jerian Grant had one of his better outings with 14 points and 4 assists. Cristiano Felicio (13 points, 5 rebounds) continues to look like a very valuable piece for the Bulls’ young core moving forward.

But it just wasn’t enough without the services of Butler. The Knicks were missing their second year sensation Kristaps Porzingis, but Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony both showed up. Rose followed his 25 point performance last night with another 17 points and 3 assists. He showed flashes of the vintage Rose whom Bulls fans used to love, forcefully driving to the hoop for acrobatic finishes. Anthony paced the Knicks with 23 points, 9 boards and 6 dimes.

Quick Hits

Rajon Rondo had 8 assists in his second game back after being benched for 5 straight contests, but he looked very tentative with his shot (2-9).

Doug McDermott’s recent struggles continued. Perhaps he’s experiencing a resurgence of concussion symptoms? Whatever the reason, Doug has just 13 points on 4-22 shooting over the last three games.

Former Bulls center Joakim Noah is having a tough first season in New York, but he was a factor tonight. His stat line against his former team looked familiar to Bulls fans: 12 points, 15 rebounds and a block.

Rose and Noah were seen trash talking with former teammate Taj Gibson on multiple occasions, and Taj returned the favor. All in good fun, of course. Those three were very close during their Bulls tenure. Earlier today, Gibson defended Rose to the media when asked about Rose’s latest PR hiccup.

Next Up: The Bulls return home to host the New Orleans Pelicans (15-24) on Saturday. This will be the first of two meetings between these teams this season. Anthony Davis (29.1 ppg) trails only Russell Westbrook in scoring across the NBA. He’s also averaging 12.2 rebounds per game, good for 6th in the league. Tipoff is at 4:00 PM CST.

12 Year Old Emoni Bates Already Looks Like The Next Kevin Durant

Remember the name Emoni Bates. In 2023, he just might be the most talked about draft prospect making his way into the NBA. The 12 year old kid from Michigan is making waves with his basketball skills, completely dominating his middle school competition.

Bates is already 6’5. He has insanely long arms compared to his frame, which mirrors the build of NBA superstar Kevin Durant. The kid might be rail thin now, but imagine him hitting the weight room more aggressively during his high school years.

Bleacher Report just released a compilation video of Emoni’s recent games, and the combination of skills is pretty impressive. For some reason, however, B/R has since taken down that post. Fear not! Bates already has some video highlights on YouTube.

He can dribble with both hands, drive, pass and shoot while making everything look easy. And that frame. Yikes. Bates is only in the 7th grade. Assuming he doesn’t skip any grades, he won’t graduate from high school until 2022. With the NBA’s current requirement of at least one year playing college ball or internationally, that means the earliest we could see him in the NBA draft is 2023.

Plenty of these early-bloomer athletic sensations have come before Emoni, and some are never heard from again on the game’s biggest stage. Other times, of course, they’re discovered early for a reason. Remember when a high school kid graced the cover of Sports Illustrated with the headline of “The Chosen One”? So does LeBron James.

Emoni Bates. Remember the name.

Jordan Howard Is Upholding An Unreal 50-Year Old Bears Tradition

There was no better story in 2016 for the Chicago Bears than Jordan Howard. Admittedly he didn’t have a lot of competition, given the team finished 3-13. Then again he would’ve been the big story regardless. A young man who lost his father as a child, lost his football program at Alabama-Birmingham, and almost lost out on being drafted.

Now he’s just the second rookie running back in Bears history to make the Pro Bowl. He finished 2016 with 1, 313 yards rushing. Good enough for second in the entire NFL right behind Ezekiel Elliott. This marks the first time ever that two rookies managed to finish a season ranked 1-2 in rushing yards.

Yet despite all that, the accomplishments aren’t quite over. There is another seldom-known piece of history that Howard has become a part of with this tremendous season. One that fans might not believe is possible. (continue to next page from top)

Taj Gibson Defends Derrick Rose After Most Recent Public Criticism

Taj Gibson and Derrick Rose go way back. The Chicago Bulls drafted Rose with the #1 overall pick in the 2008 draft, and Gibson followed as the 26th pick in 2009. They were teammates for seven seasons, and shared lots of good times under the tutelage of former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau. After a disappointing first season under the new regime of Fred Hoiberg, Chicago’s front office decided a change was needed. They traded Rose to the New York Knicks last summer, but Taj stayed.

Looking back, that sequence of events seems so unlikely. Rose was the league MVP, leading the way for rising championship contenders. Gibson was just a role player whose name dropped hourly in trade rumors every season. But after they reached the conference finals in 2011, Rose’s career took a disastrous turn with multiple knee injuries. The Bulls haven’t reached the conference finals since, and Gibson is the only player left from that 2010-11 squad.

Misunderstood

Along with Joakim Noah, who followed his buddy “Pooh” to New York, Gibson was always one of Rose’s most vocal supporters throughout all of the injuries. While they may not be on the same team anymore, that hasn’t changed. Taj spoke to the media earlier today at the team’s shootaround in New York, where they’ll face the Knicks at Madison Square Garden tonight. Knowing that Rose has taken lots of heat for his most recent PR disaster, Gibson came out boldly to defend his former teammate. Simply, Taj thinks Derrick is misunderstood.

“A lot of people misunderstand [Derrick] because he’s really one of the best, one of the greatest dudes I’ve ever been around. Off the court, personally. On the court, he’s a great guy. He’s never been negative. He’s never been, as you say, a hater. He IS just an awesome dude, man. For real.” – Taj Gibson

Gibson, who hasn’t spoken to Rose since his disappearance episode earlier this week, said he was surprised and concerned when he heard the news.

“I was surprised just like anybody else. It’s really hard to go missing in the NBA because you got so many people that’s going to check on you from agent, staff, general managers, teammates, so it’s really tough, but you never know. Things happen.” – Taj Gibson

Derrick Being Derrick

As for Rose’s current struggles with the New York media and the constant public criticism he faces as a worn out has-been in the NBA, Gibson insisted that he’s just marching to the beat of his own drummer. Public image be damned.

“I feel Derrick has grown into his own. He doesn’t really care what people think anymore. Some players tend to go out and just say things because they know what fans want to hear. He’s coming at you real, telling you how he feels. Because that kid’s been through a lot, hurting both knees, having [all of] Chicago on his back from time to time…I’ve been around him for a long time, and I’m proud of him. He’s going to take some critical hits sometimes, but he’s just being himself.” – Taj Gibson

Plenty of Haters

Right now, “being himself” isn’t winning Rose any new fans. Some of those who stuck by him through his injuries wavered when Jimmy Butler elevated his game and stole the spotlight. Others couldn’t defend him when he was accused of gang rape and went through an ugly trial in the public eye. This latest incident as a member of the Knicks, an emotional or mental breakdown or whatever it was, has haters coming at Rose from all directions. Then a New York reporter leaked that Derrick wants a max deal as a free agent this summer, and the haters kept piling on.

And yet, there was Taj. Holding strong to his belief that his friend Derrick is a great guy. A misunderstood guy who’s had a string of rotten luck. Hopefully Gibson and Rose, as well as Joakim, find a moment to catch up before tipoff between the Bulls and Knicks tonight. A lot has happened since they parted ways, and a chat with an old friend can do wonders for an aching heart or preoccupied mind.

WATCH: Goalie On Goalie One Hitter Quitter

Last night the Cincinnati Cyclones and the Quad City Mallards of the ECHL met in a wild game that included a line brawl. The highlight was a goalie fight that ended in the Mallards’ Adam Vay knocking out the Cyclones’ Michael Houser in one punch. At least he was nice enough to check on him after he decked him. LOL.

Brian Urlacher Files For Emergency Custody Of Son After Stepfather’s Death

Moments ago, David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune released a report that former Bears linebacker and future Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher has taken temporary custody of his son following the death of the child’s stepfather.

On Monday, a judge granted Urlacher’s request, which he filed as an emergency motion in a Cook County courtroom. Urlacher’s son Kennedy has since joined Brian, his wife and their two daughters at their home in Arizona.

Tragic & Suspicious

The Bears legend shares joint custody of Kennedy with Tyna Robertson, Kennedy’s mother. On December 29, Robertson’s husband Ryan Karageorge died from a gunshot wound following a birthday party at their home in Willow Springs. In his motion for custody, Urlacher cited “suspicious circumstance” surrounding the shooting incident but would not go into further detail when reached for comment.

“This is an unfortunate situation, but my main concern is the best interests of my son.” – Brian Urlacher

According to reports from Willow Springs police, the gun fired as Karageorge was attempting to unload it. That sounds like an unfortunate accident, but Robertson’s behavior following the shooting bothered Urlacher, per his petition for custody. Kennedy was with Urlacher in Arizona when the shooting occurred. When Kennedy heard what happened from his cousin via Snapchat, he called his mother for confirmation. Urlacher attested in his petition that Robertson sounded “happy and cheerful” over the phone, and claimed that her husband had died in a car crash. It wasn’t until the next morning that Robertson admitted to Urlacher that Karageorge shot himself after the two got into a heated argument.

Urlacher’s lawyers argued that it was in Kennedy’s best interest to be removed from Robertson’s care.

“The environment with Tyna is a serious endangerment to the child’s mental, moral or physical health, and if the child is required to return to Tyna’s care, it will significantly impair his emotional development.” – Brian Urlacher’s Attorney

Urlacher and Robertson have had custody battles over Kennedy in the past. There is a hearing scheduled on March 9 to revisit the judge’s ruling and review the results of the investigation.

Kris Bryant’s Game 7 Cleats Contain Some Very Weird Images

After the Cubs won Game 7 of the World Series, the spikes that Kris Bryant wore were auctioned off. The winner of that auction was Chicago restaurateur (and avid Chicago sports fan) Grant DePorter, who paid a small fee of $35, 000 for the pair of shoes.

While that could be a story in and of itself, the real story lies in what DePorter noticed on the NL MVP’s cleats.

Dirt.

The dirt itself is not necessarily what was weird about this set of shoes, it was the images that DePorter and his buddies noticed within the dirt that led them to believe there was some  “divine intervention” during Game 7 of the World Series.
