Chicago Cubs Invade The White House

Well, if you haven’t heard, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series finally and with current President Barrack Obama being a Chicago guy, he wanted to make sure he saw his hometown boys before he left office (despite being an avid White Sox fan).

And if there is one thing the Cubs are good at, it’s making an appearance, as everyone on the team is all over social media as they team takes their tour around the White House. So here are a few of the highlights before the Cubs meet with the POTUS.

Fan Learns The Hard Way That Trash Talking Jimmy Butler Is A Bad Idea

It may have been Doug McDermott who kept the Bulls within striking distance in the first half of Sunday night’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies, but the 4th quarter belonged to Jimmy Butler. The Creighton kid came out of his recent shooting slump in a big way, pouring in a career high 31 points. Then Fred Hoiberg handed the reigns to his best player when it came time to seal the win. Butler delivered.

Here’s what Hoiberg had to say on Butler’s heroics to ESPN’s Nick Friedell after the game:

“In Jimmy’s case, it doesn’t matter if he’s 10-for-10, or 1-for-10. He’s going to step up with confidence in that fourth quarter and try to take over the game with supreme confidence and that’s a great luxury to have is when you have a guy, that you know you put the ball in his hands and he can close the game for you.” – Fred Hoiberg

Hoiberg’s right. Butler is dripping with confidence this season, playing at the highest level of his career. But he had a little extra motivation to take over and carry the Bulls to victory in Memphis.

Bad Idea

A Grizzlies fan seated a few rows behind the Bulls bench kept throwing trash talk at Butler, who had a slow start to his night. The fan could be heard saying things like “I’m watching you, Jimmy” and also bragged to his friends about successfully getting in Butler’s head. He definitely got in Butler’s head, but the end result was not what the fan intended.

Jimmy scored 9 of his 16 points in the 4th quarter, including back to back jumpers in the final minute to give the Bulls the lead. Then he stole the Grizzlies’ inbounds pass with a great hustle play to lock up the victory.

Butler returned to the bench, and stared up at the trash talker. “How are you going to do that to me?” the heartbroken fan said.

Jimmy’s response was classic: “I’m sorry. I love you, man.”

Moments later, the final horn sounded and the Bulls escaped with a 108-104 triumph. As Butler and his teammates walked down the tunnel back to the visiting locker room, the Grizzlies fan had his moment of realization.

“I pissed him off.”

Lesson learned the hard way for that disappointed fan in Memphis. Trash talking in Jimmy Butler’s direction is a risky move. It might just be the little extra juice the Bulls’ overworked workhorse needs to take over another 4th quarter.

Jeremy Roenick Is The Next Former Blackhawks Player To Get One More Shift

The Chicago Blackhawks will feature American hockey legend, Jeremy Roenick, for the latest “One More Shift” on January 22nd. JR was drafted with their first pick (8th overall) in 1988 and went on to play 8 seasons with the organization.

Roenick was a three time all-star and scored 50 goals in back-to-back seasons in 1991-1992 and 1992-1993. JR ranks in the top 10 of every major scoring statistical category for the Blackhawks and is fourth in goals all-time for an American. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010 and many believe he will make HHOF in Toronto at some point.

His time in Chicago was cut short after long time owner, “Dollar Bill” Wirtz, went back on a verbal agreement. Despite that, Roenick holds Chicago very dear and cried on national TV when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2010. He was and still beloved by many Blackhawks fans and they believe his number should be in the rafters.

NFL Insiders Believe Chicago Bears Might Pursue This Veteran QB

A Chicago Bears Colin Kaepernick alliance next season? Sounds pretty crazy at first thought. Here is a former second round draft pick who rose to stardom in 2012 for the San Francisco 49ers. Then, almost like a streaking comet across the night sky, he disappeared. Since then he’s hovered in and out of the starting lineup for the San Francisco 49ers.

It’s never a good sign when one has to fight for playing time and can’t beat out Blaine Gabbert. Nonetheless his past accomplishments remain a topic of furious discussion. He came one play away from winning a Super Bowl and is still pretty young for a quarterback. Why can’t it be possible for him to regain that old form in the right situation?

Expectations are he will opt out of his current contract with the 49ers this spring and seek an opportunity elsewhere. Speculation has already begun about where he might end up. There are plenty of teams that need a quarterback, but two respected analysts think they know the best place for him.

This NFL Playoffs Stat Predicts Likely Chicago Bears Draft Plan

By this point most Chicago Bears followers are focused on the upcoming off-season this March and April. The strong belief is that 2017 could end up being a pivotal turning point for the franchise. That’s the hope anyway. Nobody wants a 3-13 finish and being dead last in the NFC North to become a habit moving forward.

The million dollar question is how in the world do they pull it off? Head coach John Fox appears to be on the spot for this coming season. He’s only won nine games in his first two seasons. Patience is wearing thin to see any sign of progress. Instead his tenure has been marked by undisciplined play and rampant injuries.

Can he possibly hope to turn things around in year three or is he destined to see his likely last head coaching job end with a resounding thud? It’s certainly a herculean task, but one that could be made easier if the team can figure out how to crack a code that has befuddled them for decades.

VIDEO: Delight in Clay Matthews Being Posterized By Ridiculous Spin Move

There may be no more villanous character in modern Chicago Bears lore than Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews. So any time he’s put to task by another team, it’s must-see television. Enter Ezekiel Elliott. The Dallas Cowboys rookie running back has had an unforgettable season, and he may have just provided the signature play.

Needing a touchdown to tie the NFC divisional playoff, Matthews appears to have Elliott dead to rights on a blitz up the middle. He quickly found out he was mistaken.

Dallas went on to score the touchdown and two-point conversion to tie the game. Per usual the game was put back into the hands of Aaron Rodgers. Time will tell if he can put away or if the Cowboys get another chance. Rest assured Matthews isn’t eager to see Elliott the rest of the game. Not after something like that.

The winner of this contest will face the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game. A Packers victory means they go to Atlanta. If the Cowboys can complete the comeback, they would host the Falcons next week. No doubt either contest would be loads of fun to watch. Much-needed in an otherwise boring postseason.

Go Falcons.

Expect Bears To Get Major Deja Vu Watching This QB Prospect

The Chicago Bears Mitch Trubisky talk is going to get louder and more frequent as the NFL draft approaches in April. That’s just the reality of the situation. Chicago is looking hard at the 2017 class after watching injuries and inconsistent play dominate the position in 2016. Jay Cutler is aging and hasn’t played a full season since 2009. Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley flashed but are clearly backups.

Trubisky is one of the top prospects expected to be available. Chicago holds the #3 pick in the first round. It’s fair to say they must know anything and everything possible about the Ohio native who enjoyed his first and only year starting at North Carolina. A good way to help that endeavor is by comparing him to current pros.

Several have been thrown around already. Some see Blaine Gabbert. Others Blake Bortles. A few even think he is rather similar to standout Eagles rookie Carson Wentz. However, upon examining the tape the Bears brass are going to have flashbacks (nightmares) of another familiar face they know too well. One who has broken their hearts far too often.

His name is Aaron Rodgers.

Heartbroken Northwestern Women’s Basketball Team Honors Player Who Committed Suicide

The Northwestern women’s basketball team suffered an unspeakable loss this week.

So you have to feel good about the Wildcats earning an 80-67 victory Saturday against Indiana in the first game since Northwestern sophomore Jordan Hankins committed suicide, reportedly by hanging herself in her dorm room.

Hankins was a 19-year-old sophomore from Indianapolis and student in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

The memories were everywhere at Welsh-Ryan Arena, as fans and players wore “Fly High J” shirts in her honor. Teammate Amber Jamison wore Hankins’ No. 5 jersey.

Point guard Ashley Deary had this to say after Saturday’s game: “Throughout the whole game we felt like we wanted to embody her spirit and her aggressiveness and her confidence. … Just play with her swagger. That’s what she would have done. She would just go at it. I just wanted to make her proud.”

Coach Joe McKeown said: “There’s no playbook. Everything I’m telling you is off the top of my head. We’re going to lean on each other.”

This column from Christine Brennan of USA Today about her interaction with the Northwestern women’s basketball team is worth a read.

Her high school alma mater, Lawrence North, wore these shirts in her memory this week:

Fans Deliver Some Hilarious Questions To Cubs Players During Panel Discussion

As the 32nd annual Cubs Convention comes to a close today at noon, the team will prepare to board a plane and make the trip east to meet with President Barack Obama in Washington D.C. The trip will be the icing on the cake to a historic 2016 season but before the team boards the plane, a handful of players were on the hot seat during different panel discussions at the convention yesterday.

Day 2 of the convention was highlighted by numerous panel discussions that featured players, coaches, legends, and executives. What made these so hilarious is the fact that any fan, of any age could wait in line to ask their favorite players whatever question they want.

The fans didn’t disappoint.

Devin Hester Plans To Retire After End of the Season

Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman were some of the favorites for Chicago Bears fans over the past two decades. However, it’s fair to say that none of them could leave people breathless quite like Devin Hester could. The former second round pick from Miami was a virtual unknown when he first stepped on that cool Lambeau Field grass for his rookie debut in 2006. Then he returned a punt for a touchdown.

Eleven years later and the man still keeps finding ways to bring football fans to their feet. His performance in the divisional round against Atlanta was a perfect example. He produced several long returns in the game. Unfortunately most of them were negates by untimely penalties by his teammates.

It no doubt brought a small tear to the eyes of Bears fans everywhere who still long to see him do that just one more time in navy blue. Sadly they may never get to see him to it again. Not based on a recent revelation courtesy of Seahawks beat writer Gregg Bell.

If this is the case then the conversations will soon shift to the inevitable next debate. Is Hester a future Pro Football Hall of Famer?
