Sports gambling in the state of Illinois was legalized in the summer of 2019 by Governor J.B. Pritzker. The first legal bet was made at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines in Spring 2020. Since then, several other sportsbooks have entered the state attempting to win market share. Covid 19 present legislative challenges to physical casinos, so a bill was passed allowing Illinois residents to bypass physical registration and simply register online. This opened up opportunities for digital sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel to quickly enter the market. The early numbers show millions of dollars in revenue flowing into the state due to sports betting. Eventually, every state in the U.S. will legalize sports gambling; Tennessee went live shortly after Illinois.
