Jason Heyward Breaks Hitless Streak With 400-Foot Home Run

Probably the most talked about storyline in the offseason for the Chicago Cubs was Jason Heyward re-working his swing. After a miserable season at the plate, Heyward went back and started over at the plate. So far in spring training he hasn’t seen many positive results, but on Monday Heyward finally got something good to turn to. Heyward clubbed a 400-foot home run against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, snapping his 0-for-15 start to the spring.

We already know Heyward is a gold glover in the outfield, but any improvement at the plate would be phenomenal for the Cubs.

Bulls Fan Favorite Brian Scalabrine Joins Draft Pool For Big3 League

The Man. The Myth. The Legend.

…He’s back! The White Mamba is making his triumphant to the basketball court.

Earlier today The BIG3, Ice Cube’s 3-on-3 basketball league featuring retired NBA stars as players and coaches, announced that Brian Scalabrine is among the latest signings to their draft pool. Scalabrine retired from the NBA in 2012 after an 11-year career with three teams. He won a title with the Boston Celtics in 2008 and spent his final two seasons with the Chicago Bulls.

After retiring, Scal turned down the Bulls’ offer to become an assistant coach. Instead, he decided to begin his career as a broadcaster with CSN New England covering his beloved Celtics. He also had a short stint working as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors and their D-League affiliate.

Chicago Legacy

Despite averaging just 4.6 minutes per game in 46 appearances spanning his two seasons with the Bulls, Scalabrine quickly became a fan favorite in Chicago. “White Mamba” t-shirts flew off the shelves. Memes depicting him as a superhero and last-second savior took over the internet. Fans at the United Center would loudly chant “SCAL-A-BREE-NEE!” late in 4th quarters, imploring coach Tom Thibodeau to give the veteran some garbage time minutes. When the fans got their wish, the Madhouse erupted in cheers as Scal checked in. If he scored a basket or dished out an assist, the roof came off.

Scalabrine and other retired NBA players will attend the BIG3’s combine in April. After the combine, the league will have a draft in which each of the eight teams will fill out the remainder of their 5-man rosters. The league will play games in ten different cities across the country.

There’s no doubt Scalabrine will impress at the combine. It’s unclear right now how the order of the draft will be determined, but whichever team lucks into the #1 pick has a no-brainer choice. Who doesn’t take The White Mamba?

Welcome back to the hardwood, Scal. Go get ’em!

Scott Darling Will Have This Intimidating New Mask When He Returns

I think it’s safe to say that Scott Darling is a “gear head” because he is constantly changing his looks. He never wears any mask style for any extended period of time and that’s cool.

This has to be one of the best Blackhawks’ goalie masks since Eddie Belfour. It’s not just the traditional crest or feathers but looks like neon you would see on an old sign at a bar. Actually, it looks a lot like the ‘Stranger Things’ word mark.

Whatever it is, my attempt at explaining the mask is feeble to the way the artist explains it in his own words below. A tip of the mask David Gunnarsson for putting this together.

The goalie mask is one of the few places in sports where a player can really show their personality. If this is the last mask Darling wears with the Blackhawks, he is surely going out in style.

Scott Darling´s latest mask creation is here and it is something very unique…🤓 As the total Mask Nerd I am I love to always try to come up with new design ideas and styles, every mask I create is a totally unique storybook📕. This design is rough and raw, the black base is created in a very hard vintage style with a brush👊🏻🖌. Then the rollercoaster continues🎢 and the design is created in a red sketchy style…✍🏻 Together it delivers a totally unique mask look…🎯 On a distance it is a clean cut 100% Blackhawks design, and when you come closer the design transforms in front of your eyes👀 and the sketchy vintage style gives a very raw feeling💪🏻. And for sure all the DaveArt Trademark Super FX✨ is unleashed all over the sketchy creation…🎨😎 @sdarling_33 @nhlblackhawks #DaveArt #nhl #DaveArtTheCradleOfCreativity @nhl #DaveArtTheMaskNerd

The Chicago Bears roster is going to look a lot different before the 2017 offseason is over. Already the speculation is rampant regarding what the team has planned for both free agency and the draft. Odds are that at least a third of the starting jobs could be filled by new names when the team prepares for opening day this coming September.

Already a host of different names have been connected to them. Of course there is Mike Glennon at quarterback. Then there is Stephon Gilmore at cornerback. They are even expected to make a serious run at standout right tackle Ryan Wagner. It’s really remarkable how many different avenues they can take, leading to the utter lack of knowing what to expect.

In this mad rush for information people have really stopped and considered the other side of that coin. Who on the current roster are not likely to be there much longer? It seems the time is almost at hand for people to find out.

Here’s Two Reasons Why You Should Watch The Cubs Representatives In The World Baseball Classic

Most baseball experts would argue that the World Baseball Classic is a useless tournament that nobody takes serious. In addition that it, it happens to fall right in the middle of Spring Training which makes exactly zero MLB managers happy. While I wouldn’t disagree with the viewpoint that the tournament is a pain in the ass, I would never say that it is useless either.

The value of the two week tournament lies in the opportunity for players to show their pride in their country by representing them on the field as well as getting to team up with other MLB players that they’ve had relationships with since they were young children.

The Cubs will be represented on two teams, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, during the tournament which runs from March 6-22. Javier Baez will play for Puerto Rico and Hector Rondon will play for Venezuela.

For those who are saying the WBC is a waste of time, I’ll give you two concrete reasons you should watch the tournament (at least the games that involve Baez and Rondon).

WATCH: Jimmy Butler Goes Sneaker Shopping In Chicago

Jimmy Butler has game and he’s also got shoe game. Recently he was featured on Complex’s Sneaker Shopping with Joe La Puma as they hit up Chicago’s famed Saint Alfred.

Butler talked shoes, plugged Jordan Brand and spoke of playing basketball with Michael Jordan. He showed sneakerheads what he is feeling and even mentioned Barack Obama liked his shoe choice for his visit to the White House.

The Jordan Gift of Flight 11 was his choice and I have to say it was a good one. I may be biased because it’s one of the favorite pairs in my collection. Shameless self-plug, oh well.

It’s nice to see someone like Jimmy Butler make it. He’s gone from homeless to one of Jordan Brand’s brightest athletes. He may not be from Chicago but we all feel like he is one of our own.

Another Important Sign This May Be The Chicago Bears Future QB

deshaun watson bears

It’s no secret that the Chicago Bears are in the hunt for a new quarterback. One can say it’s the all-consuming obsession of fans everywhere. This is the first time in eight seasons that the franchise is undergoing a major change at that position. Jay Cutler appears on his way out, the team ready for a fresh start and already rumored to have moves in mind.

Of course there remains the perceived interest in Jimmy Garoppolo. The New England Patriots backup shined in his brief opportunity last season. His hometown ties to Illinois, age and skill set are all things that just fit the Bears well. The problem is the asking price for him may be too high. Then there is Mike Glennon. Former backup for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he’s viewed as one of the top options in a thin free agent class. Somebody the Bears are rumored to have interest in.

Most agree that Glennon is far from a franchise answer at the position. However, as a “bridge” QB who can start for a year or two while a team develops a rookie? He’d be a good choice. It’s a matter of figuring out who the Bears might have in mind. Nobody knows for sure, but there is a new trail of bread crumbs that could tip off who they have in mind

Chicago Bears Combine QB Meetings Have One Glaring Name Missing

chicago bears scouting combine

The scouting combine is a treasure trove of information for the Chicago Bears this year. Not just because it’s their biggest chance to see top draft prospect up close, but also because they can meet other teams to discuss business. Not to mention gauge where they might be in terms of thinking about this player or that.

One particular aspect that could prove quite interesting is the player interviews. Each team is allowed to request a certain number of players for one-on-one meetings. This gives them a brief opportunity to gauge the mental makeup and attitude of the player based on how he carries himself and answers questions. It’s also often a great way to gauge which players the team might be eyeing for the draft.

Most would say the names that appear on a list are the most interesting. However, in regards to a recent revelation for the Bears, it might be a name who didn’t.

Cubs Agree To Deal With Addison Russell

Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Chicago Cubs, Top Prospects

The Chicago Cubs have reportedly agreed to terms on Addison Russell’s salary for the 2017 season. Russell, 23, will make $644,000, according to Jon Heyman.

In two seasons with the Cubs, Russell has a slash line of .240/.314/.404 with 34 home runs. He’s already considered one of the best defensive shortstops in the game and is projected for another power outbreak in 2017, after hitting 21 home runs last year. In his second season in the Majors, Russell was voted to the All-Star Game.

Russell, who the Cubs acquired in a trade back in 2014 with the Oakland A’s, will be eligible for salary arbitration next offseason.

The Cubs still have not come to terms with Kris Bryant, but Heyman reports his deal could break a record set by Mike Trout.

Via Jon Heyman:

The 2016 NL MVP and 2015 NL Rookie of the Year could be in line to come close to, if not pass, Mike Trout’s still-standing pre-arbitration record; he earned $1 million in 2014. Like Bryant, Trout had a Rookie of the Year Award under his belt at the time; unlike Bryant, he had not won an MVP to that point, though he was coming off of back-to-back runner-up finishes.

Ryan Howard, who earned $900,000 in 2007 with the Phillies following a Rookie of the Year Award in 2005 and MVP in 2006, still holds the record for most money earned over the minimum, which also bodes well as a comp for Bryant.

It’s still incredible how much of a bargain these guys come at when they produce so much at a young age. Just look at Bryant. A ROY and MVP award in consecutive seasons and he was making less than a million bucks. Talk about value. Of course, Bryant and Russell, and all the other young players for the Cubs will eventually get huge deals.

Still, a nice little pay raise for these guys. Plus, you know, being World Series champs is nice too.

Albert Almora Jr. Crushes A Grand Slam For The Cubs

Sometimes you forget how young Albert Almora Jr. is because you’ve heard about him for such a long time. In 2016, he finally made his MLB debut for the Chicago Cubs and as a rookie earned himself a spot on the postseason roster. Now, a World Series champion, Almora will have a bigger role for the Cubs in 2017.

He was the first player drafted under the Theo Epstein regime and although Almora wasn’t know for his power in the minors, he showed off some pop against the Texas Rangers on Sunday. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Almora hit a grand slam, crushing a pitch to left field.

You can’t say this enough, with so many great young players already on the Major League roster and more waiting in the minors, it’s a great time to be a fan of the Cubs. Oh by the way, Willson Contreras also hit a home run during Sunday’s game.

By the way, in case you missed this gem, check out a hilarious trade proposal that ESPN’s Jim Bowden came up with, involving Almora earlier this week.

ESPN’s Jim Bowden Must Have Been Drunk When He Came Up With This Cubs Trade Proposal

I’m not even exaggerating with that headline.
