Cubs Agree To Deal With Addison Russell

Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Chicago Cubs, Top Prospects

The Chicago Cubs have reportedly agreed to terms on Addison Russell’s salary for the 2017 season. Russell, 23, will make $644,000, according to Jon Heyman.

In two seasons with the Cubs, Russell has a slash line of .240/.314/.404 with 34 home runs. He’s already considered one of the best defensive shortstops in the game and is projected for another power outbreak in 2017, after hitting 21 home runs last year. In his second season in the Majors, Russell was voted to the All-Star Game.

Russell, who the Cubs acquired in a trade back in 2014 with the Oakland A’s, will be eligible for salary arbitration next offseason.

The Cubs still have not come to terms with Kris Bryant, but Heyman reports his deal could break a record set by Mike Trout.

Via Jon Heyman:

The 2016 NL MVP and 2015 NL Rookie of the Year could be in line to come close to, if not pass, Mike Trout’s still-standing pre-arbitration record; he earned $1 million in 2014. Like Bryant, Trout had a Rookie of the Year Award under his belt at the time; unlike Bryant, he had not won an MVP to that point, though he was coming off of back-to-back runner-up finishes.

Ryan Howard, who earned $900,000 in 2007 with the Phillies following a Rookie of the Year Award in 2005 and MVP in 2006, still holds the record for most money earned over the minimum, which also bodes well as a comp for Bryant.

It’s still incredible how much of a bargain these guys come at when they produce so much at a young age. Just look at Bryant. A ROY and MVP award in consecutive seasons and he was making less than a million bucks. Talk about value. Of course, Bryant and Russell, and all the other young players for the Cubs will eventually get huge deals.

Still, a nice little pay raise for these guys. Plus, you know, being World Series champs is nice too.

Albert Almora Jr. Crushes A Grand Slam For The Cubs

Sometimes you forget how young Albert Almora Jr. is because you’ve heard about him for such a long time. In 2016, he finally made his MLB debut for the Chicago Cubs and as a rookie earned himself a spot on the postseason roster. Now, a World Series champion, Almora will have a bigger role for the Cubs in 2017.

He was the first player drafted under the Theo Epstein regime and although Almora wasn’t know for his power in the minors, he showed off some pop against the Texas Rangers on Sunday. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Almora hit a grand slam, crushing a pitch to left field.

You can’t say this enough, with so many great young players already on the Major League roster and more waiting in the minors, it’s a great time to be a fan of the Cubs. Oh by the way, Willson Contreras also hit a home run during Sunday’s game.

By the way, in case you missed this gem, check out a hilarious trade proposal that ESPN’s Jim Bowden came up with, involving Almora earlier this week.

ESPN’s Jim Bowden Must Have Been Drunk When He Came Up With This Cubs Trade Proposal

I’m not even exaggerating with that headline.

The Bears Are Favorites To Get Mike Glennon, and Here’s What It Will Cost

mike glennon chicago bears

Rumors are dangerous game to play this time of year in the NFL. There is no telling which ones will come to pass and which are just blowing smoke. The Chicago Bears have really mastered the art of misdirection over the past couple years with their current regime. It’s often impossible to get a sense of what their true motives are.

One nugget that has steadily gained steam though is they are focused on finding a veteran option at quarterback. The reasoning seems obvious enough. They want an excuse to part ways with Jay Cutler. Also they understand the pressure to win in 2017. It’s unlikely that a rookie quarterback they take from this class will do the job.

Hence the interest in top names like Kirk Cousins and Jimmy Garoppolo. Unfortunately they seem too far out of reach. Signs are growing though that another connected to the Bears is becoming likelier every days.

WATCH: Guy’s Phone Won’t Stop Buzzing After Anthony Rizzo Retweets Him

Chicagoan Joe Porter sent out a harmless (and hilarious) tweet a few days back and it’s turning out to be a bad decision. Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo saw Joe’s tweet and decided to retweet it to his 550,000 followers.

Sounds pretty cool right?

Here’s the original tweet.

Like I said, this is a phenomenal tweet but when Rizzo decided to tweet it out to his cult following of 550,000 twitter followers, poor Joe’s phone went absolutely haywire.

You can watch the video HERE.

Let’s all pray that Joe’s phone has recovered from the unending stream of notifications the past few days.

Let’s Watch Kyle Schwarber Destroy Baseballs To Celebrate His 24th Birthday

Chicago Cubs, Kyle Schwarber

I know I’ll probably get run out of the building for saying this but a good part of me feels like Kyle Schwarber is turning into the most popular player for the Chicago Cubs. Just four years ago, he was a relatively normal catcher playing at the University of Indiana and now he finds himself almost achieving legendary status for his role in helping the Cubs win the 2016 World Series. The Cubs roster is littered with superstars and yet, it seems like Schwarber is the one that fans want to see.

I say all of this because I myself am a huge fan of the War Bear. Even if you take away the freakishly quick turnaround from a devastating knee injury, the heroic at-bats during the World Series, and his ability to hit the shit out of a baseball, Schwarber just seems like a kid who’s having a blast playing the game that he loves. It’s personalities like his that make him so endearing to a very loyal Cubs fan base and it also doesn’t hurt it looks like the guy could (and would) still set a record for the longest keg stand at a house party.

So as great of personality that the 24-year-old Schwarber has, it’s pretty hard to write a legit article about how great of a dude he is.

Plus, nobody would want to read it.

So instead of doing that, let’s watch Schwarber hit the ever-loving shit out of a couple baseballs as our way of saying Happy Birthday.

WATCH: Predators Fan Makes Crude Gesture As Kane Celebrates Goal

Patrick Kane sealed the Blackhawks victory over the Predators with an empty net goal and only :35 left on the clock. As he is celebrating with teammate Artemi Panarin, some Predators fan goes up to the glass to forcefully give them the middle finger.

I’ll never understand this. It doesn’t change or accomplish anything. It’s a game, that you did not play in and your team was already losing.

I bet he went back to his seat and was like, “Guys! Guys! Did you see what I just did? I totally got them.”

Ughh, no you didn’t. You looked like an idiot on TV.

If this guy gets this upset over his crappy hockey team, I would hate to see him overreact over something that may actually matter.

Jordan Makes Major Announcement At UNC Game Amidst Earth-Shaking Applause Then Messes Up

The rumor has been circulating for a couple days that the University of North Carolina football program would be switching to Jordan Brand. It wasn’t official, of course, until Michael Jordan said so.

Well, he announced it himself during halftime of the basketball game against arch-rival Duke.

Michael Jordan receives applause everywhere he goes but this was different . The “Dean Dome” was shaking when he walked out dressed in Jordan Brand UNC football gear.

He spoke shortly about his love for the state of North Carolina and anything sports related to the state. Jordan also gave praise to Head Football Coach Larry Fedora and says he likes the direction they’re going.

He also had a hiccup in saying that “the ceiling is the roof” for UNC. Oops. Everyone makes mistakes. Even Michael Jordan. He was most likely caught up in the moment.

If you’re not a person who follows sports uniforms, you’re wondering what a basketball brand has to do with football. Jordan isn’t just shoes but training and lifestyle apparel as well.

UNC isn’t even the first school to get the Jumpman treatment. The University of Michigan had that honor last season. They even had alum and Jordan ambassador Derek Jeter on board with the school.

It was only a matter of time until this union happened, but I doubt Jordan cared who the coach was. The uniforms and vote of confidence are all recruiting tactics, but still a great move for all involved.

Watch Jordan’s entrance and speech here.

The Glass Half Empty (and Full) Ways To View Latest Alshon Jeffery News

By this point most Chicago Bears fans were losing hope. Alshon Jeffery, the best receiver the team has ever drafted in the Super Bowl era, could be leaving. After failing to use the franchise tag on the 26-year old for a second time, it seemed like GM Ryan Pace was content to let him walk. Inexplicable thinking from the perspective of others.

You’re bringing in a new quarterback and letting your best receiving threat leave at the same time? Does not compute. However, it seems the thread isn’t cut just yet. Ian Rapoport indicates the two sides haven’t broken off contact just yet.

Initially there is a surge of relief and hope at that news. However, as logic begins to set in one realizes there are a number of possibilities in play. Not all of them in favor of the Bears. Two scenarios stick out as the most likely.

Kris Bryant Makes Hitting A Grand Slam Look Easy

Kris Bryant picked a great time to hit his first home run of spring training for the Chicago Cubs, destroying a baseball against the Los Angeles Dodgers for a grand slam on Saturday.

The reigning National League MVP showed once again that falling behind in the count doesn’t matter because he can still do serious damage. After Jason Heyward walked with the bases loaded, Bryant cleared them with this swing.

Beautiful. He hit 39 home runs last year, so like 50 this year?

Bears May Be Mimicking Quarterback Plan of This NFL Contender

chicago bears draft plans

The Chicago Bears aren’t betraying any details regarding what they plan to do at the quarterback position. Why would they? The less the media knows, the more advantage they have over other teams who also need a QB. There are any number of routes they could go. Of course there is the draft but also free agency and the trade market.

For the first time in what feels like awhile, there are considerable options from each of those avenues. It comes down to what GM Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox think is best. They have the resources to make something happen. Upwards of $51 million in salary cap space with the ability to create another $20 million easily if they wish. Also the highest draft position they’ve held since 1972 at the #3 overall pick.

If applied right they can set this team up for a big turnaround in 2017 and perhaps a long run of success in the future. It comes down to having a good plan and executing it. So how can they possibly play this? Recent signs offer a theory.
