Bears Don’t Flinch By Grabbing Their Quarterback of the Future

bears mitch trubisky

Would the Bears draft Mitch Trubisky? It was the buzz question of the entire offseason. He was thehot name. That quarterback who wowed the football world by seemingly coming out of nowhere at North Carolina. Everything from his athleticism, to the poise, accuracy and clutch performance under pressure were on display. He looked how an NFL quarterback should look. Under control, versatile and tough.

This is the draft though. Teams focus less on what’s good about a player and more about what’s wrong with them. One might call it the “nitpicking season.” For him the concerns were pretty straightforward. He doesn’t throw the hardest ball and can tend to make some poor reads, resulting in interceptions. Both are fair judgments. Still, is that really enough to hold him back from being a high first round choice?

The Bears don’t think so.

Bears draft Mitch Trubisky always made sense

Here is what Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, their top draft expert had to same about the college star.

Trubisky is a high-end quarterback prospect who possesses NFL size, a big arm and the ability to throw with accuracy from the pocket or on the move. Despite playing in a spread-based offense, he’s a full-field reader who does a very good job of getting an early read on the safeties before crafting his course of action. Trubisky will have to become much more pocket aware and do a better job of recognizing and attacking blitzes to back NFL defensive coordinators off. He hasn’t put all the pieces together yet, but the puzzle is all right in front. Trubisky projects as a good starting quarterback with a high floor and the potential to be great.

It looked from the beginning like Trubisky was destined for Chicago. Why? For starters he’s the most complete quarterback in the draft, with respect to Deshaun Watson. He also is an excellent fit for the type of offense Dowell Loggains likes to run. His lack of experience is an issue, but not after what the Bears have done to prepare. He’ll be able to sit behind Mike Glennon for this season, learning the ropes with help from respected veteran Mark Sanchez. One should expect it won’t be long before he finds his way onto the field.

This Bears Draft Hype Video Guarantees To Get The Adrenaline Flowing

bears draft hype video

As if fans weren’t excited enough already. Now a Chicago Bears draft hype video is out? Have mercy already. No doubt this is prime time for GM Ryan Pace. He has made it clear over the past two years that his job rests with stacking good drafts on top of each other. That is the only way he’ll be able to rebuild the organization into a true contender in the division, the conference and the league.

He’s not wrong. Poor drafting is what got the Bears into this mess in the first place. In fact no draft pick selected prior to 2013 is even on the roster anymore. That truth came to pass when Alshon Jeffery decided to leave for Philadelphia in free agency. Thus the team is now putting their faith almost entirely in Pace’s roster decisions.

Based on his 2016 draft results, that is not a bad thing. Something that was emphasized heavily in the video. If this doesn’t get you excited, then it’s probably best to watch something else.

Bears Draft Hype Video

Indeed the 2016 class exceeded expectations. First round pick Leonard Floyd produced seven sacks in 12 games on defense, showcasing that athleticism and burst that makes him so dangerous. Second round pick Cody Whitehair was acquired after not one but two trade downs. Originally slated for left guard, he was forced to play center after Hroniss Grasu tore his ACL. A position he’d never played before. Yet he finished ranked in the top six among all NFL centers.

Fourth round linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski instantly earned a following thanks to his hard-hitting style and tackling prowess. Over the course of last year he showed rapid improvement in every area. The crown jewel of the class though was fifth round pick Jordan Howard. An overlooked running back out of Indiana, he rose from the depths to become the starter for Chicago four games into the season. By the time he was done he was the second-leading rusher in the NFL and a Pro Bowler.

If Pace can have anywhere close to the same success as that group, the Bears will be in great shape for 2017.

Avisail Garcia Just Hit Another Moonshot For The White Sox

You can say whatever you want about Avisail Garcia’s BABIP, how it’s only been three weeks and you’re right, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s blasting baseballs for the Chicago White Sox.

Garcia has four home runs so far this season and they have an average distance of 427 feet. During Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, he hit his longest home run of the year, a 451-foot bomb to center field.

He got all of this one to break up the 2-2 tie.

Taking full advantage of a mistake pitch.

Source Confirms Bears Hid Their Private Meeting With Deshaun Watson

bears meeting deshaun watson

Why didn’t the Chicago Bears meet Deshaun Watson? It’s not really a secret that they reportedly have interest in the Clemson quarterback. The entire hierarchy of GM Ryan Pace, head coach John Fox, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and QB coach Dave Raggone were at his pro day. Yet as the days went by there was a curious question floating around. Why is there no word of them meeting with him privately?

One would think that’s kind of important if they view him as a potential first round pick. A top five pick at that. Still nothing. Not a single peep from any notable outlets. Even Watson himself denied any personal visits with the team as the draft draws closer. However, information has leaked that says otherwise.

Along with Aaron Leming of Bear Report, Sports Mockery confirmed from a source that the Bears did indeed meet privately with Watson. Just last week as a matter of fact.

The source went on to say that the team initially meant to hide the information. There was a slip up and that’s how it came to light. Of course the inevitable question becomes why would Watson and the Bears hide this information? It doesn’t make a ton of sense.

Why Bears meeting Deshaun Watson would be kept quiet

In truth there are a few reason why they’d want this information suppressed. The most basic being simple misdirection. The less other teams know about what you have planned, the better the odds of getting the player you want. If another team further down the board found out the Bears were planning to take Watson, that increases the odds of a team trading up to snatch him first. Don’t forget the San Francisco 49ers have been quite public about their desires to move down from #2.

Then there is the other aspect of the Bears trading down. Most view Watson as being unworthy of the #3 overall pick. Perhaps there is a chance Chicago thinks the same. That would mean they feel it’s possible to get him a bit further down the board. Again presuming they’re able to keep the matter quiet. Thus not only do they still get their desired QB, they also get an extra high draft pick or two.

The NFL draft has always been compared to a high stakes poker game. For those who aren’t familiar with the game, there is a simple philosophy all the great players share.

If you don’t have to show your hand, don’t.

There is no upside to the Bears revealing that they met with Watson. Again assuming they do indeed have interest in him. The more other teams know about this interest, the likelier that what Pace and his front office have planned gets nixed by something out of their control. Will it matter in the end?

Probably not. Odds are Watson will be there at #3 overall. If the Bears are truly in on him, then that’s going to be the pick… and if you look at a lot of the final mock drafts floating around, many others agree.

Jose Abreu Leaves White Sox Game After Doing The Splits

The good news is that Jose Abreu could’ve done a lot more damage to his body after unintentionally doing the splits during Wednesday’s Chicago White Sox game against the Kansas City Royals, but he didn’t. Abreu did exit the game in the fifth inning after attempting to field a ground ball near first base, however it looked worse than the end result.

Abreu’s left foot gave out, causing him to do the splits. Luckily, Abreu didn’t tear his groin, but is day-to-day with a hip flexor strain.

Nevertheless, painful for Abreu.

The White Sox first baseman had a rough open to the 2017 season, but was on a roll before the injury. Abreu raised his batting average 70 points in the last four games.

His name was talked about during the offseason as another possible player that could be traded away and obviously any missed time could weaken Abreu’s value. How he comes back, if he misses significant time, will be looked at much closer.

Deshaun Watson Issued A Warning To The Chicago Bears

bears deshaun watson

The Chicago Bears Deshaun Watson connection runs deep by this point. Weeks ago it was established that the Clemson star was the likely preferred target of the franchise as their potential future franchise QB. Not surprising. His incredible production, 28-2 record between 2015 and 2016, and national championship victory over Alabama checked every box for what GM Ryan Pace claims to look for in a quarterback.

Rumors continue to persist that the team remains interested, but may not be willing to venture the risk. Not at #3 overall anyway. This would explain why the Bears are so intent on trying to move down via trade. That would provide a better player-for-pick value. Not as much of a perceived “reach.” It makes plenty of sense on paper.

That said it also may come with a stern warning. Not from the draft experts either. From Watson himself.

Bears Deshaun Watson relationship rests on a promise

The young quarterback comes across as cool, humble and genuine in his interview. That, however, belies how relentless a competitor he is. One does not win so many close games as he has without a stubborn refusal to be anything less than the best. That would explain his comments when asked about his comparison to fellow top quarterback, Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina.

In an interview with Good Morning Football on the NFL Network, he basically warned the Bears and other NFL teams that they would regret passing on him.

“You’re gonna have to live with the consequences that come with it. That’s how I see it,” Watson responded. “I try to stay in my lane. I try not to take the path. I respect Mitch and what he’s done and all the hype he’s getting, but at the same time, my result speaks for itself. I feel like I’ve accomplished everything that I could. I guess if that’s who they’re gonna roll with, so be it.”

Shades of Manning

This comes across as a clear look into the man’s mind. An unbreakable self-confidence and quiet assurance that he’s going to succeed no matter where he ends up. It reflects a similar mentality to none other than the great Peyton Manning. His statement to the Indianapolis Colts prior to the 1998 draft still resonate with people and remains a treasured story to this day.

‘I’ll leave you with this thought: If you take me, I promise you we will win a championship. If you don’t, I promise I’ll come back and kick your ass.’

Of course being in front of cameras, Watson wasn’t going to say it like that. Nonetheless that’s almost the exact same meaning behind his words. Find any excuse you need to not do it, but don’t cry and moan in five years when I’m leading my team to a Super Bowl. This is the sort of bravado teams want in their quarterbacks, which is why Watson is loved by scouts everywhere. Even in spite of his physical shortcomings.

Every NFL team wants a leader under center. Somebody who refuses to accept anything less than the best from teammates and himself. Watson proved he was that guy in college. Are the Bears willing to let him prove it again in the NFL?

Here’s The Final Mock Draft Picks From Every Bears Insider

chicago bears experts

It’s almost that time. The NFL draft is finally at hand. With just over 24 hours until the action is set to begin, experts are finally getting a decent feel for what their team plans to do. Same goes for Chicago Bears experts across every major outlet. They are gathering their information and using it make a final determination for who the big choice will be at #3 overall on Thursday night.

Make no mistake. There is hardly a consensus from the group. The rumor mill has spun at ridiculous speeds for the past month. Every day it seems like there’s a new favorite topping the Bears’ board. It takes plenty of willpower to wade through everything. So perhaps the best thing to do is run down the list of mock draft picks each one made.

Perhaps that will provide a clearer indication of where the Bears are leaning.

Brad Biggs (Chicago Tribune):  Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford

“GM Ryan Pace is going to have to think long and hard about a quarterback and has acute need for a playmaker in the secondary but you can’t go wrong with a blue chip lineman.”

Adam Hoge (WGN):  Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford

“Thomas is certainly in play for the Bears at No. 3 overall and he should be. He is a young, athletic and versatile defensive lineman with outstanding character and an arrow that is pointing up. These are all staples of previous Pace draft picks.”

Chris Emma (CBS Sports):  Jamal Adams, S, LSU

“Chicago will utilize its third pick on Adams, the all-around safety prospect. While Ohio State safety Malik Hooker will be an interesting option, Adams is a tremendous leader who has the potential to transform a secondary.”

Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. (SB Nation):  Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson

Chris Boden (CSN):  Jamal Adams, S, LSU

“Tempted by Solomon Thomas, who’s not a true 3-4 end, but Vic Fangio would move around, and feeling Jonathan Allen’s topped out, potential-wise, they go with the proven, healthy guy who can lead the secondary for the next decade. Malik Hooker more of a playmaking center fielder, but the injury history helps this decision.”

Jake Perper (Chicago Now):  Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford

“At 6’3″, 273 lbs., he can be fit as a defensive end in both a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. He crushed it at the NFL Combine last month with top performances in the bench press (30 repetitions), broad jump (126 inch), 3-cone drill (6.95 seconds) and 20-yard shuttle (4.28 seconds). His 40-yard dash wasn’t bad either at 4.69 seconds.”

Jacob Infante (Yahoo Sports):  Jamal Adams, S, LSU

“Jamal Adams covers like a cornerback and hits like a linebacker. He has the size and aggressiveness to cover tight ends, as well as the athleticism to cover wide receivers and running backs. He’s a valuable asset in the run game, as he thrives when asked to run downhill. His hip movements are fluid, and he can read plays before they happen. Off the field, he is a natural leader whom players will rally around from Day 1.”

For those keeping track it’s basically three votes for Solomon Thomas, three votes for Jamal Adams and a vote for Deshaun Watson. In other words the majority of Bears experts believe if the team stays at #3 overall it’s going to be a defensive player. All it comes down to is whom they view as the best player available.

It’s no real surprise Thomas and Adams are the two targets. Both are squeaky clean characters off the field and animals on the field. They’re known for being tremendous athletes who make plays and embrace their respective roles as leaders. Thomas would be another dynamic presence in a front seven that already features Leonard Floyd, Pernell McPhee, Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman and Willie Young.

Presuming good health that could be a lethal group. Adams on the other hand would be the missing link. That presence on the back end of the secondary Chicago hasn’t seen since Mike Brown left almost a decade ago. History shows the best Bears defenses always had a stud safety. He might be that critical piece they need to take that last step.

Tomorrow will prove whether or not Pace sticks to this script.

Former Cubs Player Chris Coghlan Just Jumped Over Yadier Molina!

OH MY GOD!

Chris Coghlan just jumped over Yadier Molina in what might be the best play of the year so far.

This was fucking awesome.

Baseball is wonderful.

Rajon Rondo Plans To Attempt Playing In Game 5 For Bulls

rajon rondo

Rajon Rondo hasn’t always been the easiest man to deal with. Several teams can attest to that. One thing though that can never be said about the man is he’s soft. In fact he’s the complete opposite. The point guard has played through pain in the past but realizing his Chicago Bulls teammates badly need a spark, he’s planning something a little daring. Or crazy depending on perspective.

Just days after being diagnosed with a fractured right thumb, Shams Charania of The Vertical heard from sources that Rondo plans to scrap the prognosis of doctors and return for Game 5 in Boston.

Given what Chicago fans have lived through with the likes of Derrick Rose, who never even tried to return early from some of his injuries, this is a remarkable change in course. Apparently Rondo is so dedicated to this attempt that he was actually shooting at practice with his left hand. If nothing else one has to admire the man for his guts.

No doubt the Bulls can use him. After taking a 2-0 series lead, his injury derailed their momentum with the Celtics taking Games 3 and 4 in Chicago. A loss in Game 5 is all but certain to be the final nail in their coffin and Rondo knows that. They need somebody to be the floor general and free up chances for open shot. He is by far the best they have at that.

Can he reach anywhere close to his customary levels? It seems fans are about to find out.

Updated Odds On Players Most Likely To Be Drafted By Bears At #3

chicago bears draft targets

Reuben Foster (100-1)

Among the Chicago Bears draft targets, he’s the most old school. Foster is probably the best linebacker in the draft. A true smart, instinctive and physical hunter. He loves to punish ball carriers who have the audacity to come in his vicinity. The Bears have lingering question marks at inside linebacker after all. Jerrell Freeman is getting into his 30s. Danny Trevathan has a concerning knee issue. Why not look for a young option like Foster to protect against a possible breakdown?

That would’ve been an interesting idea. Unfortunately Foster hurt himself with two big blunders at the scouting combine. First by getting into a heated confrontation with medical staff there, and then by failing a drug test. Add in the fact that inside linebackers don’t go in the top five of a draft and it’s just unlikely.
