Draft Options The Bears Absolutely Must Watch For On Day 2

bears day 2 draft targets

Cam Robinson (OT, Alabama)

The Chicago Bears Day 2 draft targets must begin and end with Cam Robinson. Why? He’s the last true offensive tackle in this class who looks like a plug-and-play starter. He cut his teeth in the SEC with Alabama. Won a national championship in 2015 and was their best blocker the past two seasons. He’s big, long, physical and a better athlete than people give him credit for. Enough to warrant staying on the left side, though most will state he’s better off on the right. Either way he’s an upgrade over what the Bears have now.

Mitchell Trubisky’s Official NFL Comparison Is ….

13 April 2013: North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Mitch Trubisky during the North Carolina Tar Heels Blue vs White Spring Football Game at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Mitchell Trubisky is the future quarterback for the Bears, that was cemented Thursday night after Chicago traded up to select him with the second overall pick. As fans wrestle with the quality of the pick, and the price Ryan Pace paid for it, let’s take a look at the current player that compares most favorably to Mitch.

According to his official draft profile on NFL.com, Trubisky is compared to former #1 overall pick Matthew Stafford. The two players are almost identical in size (6’2″, 225lbs) and they’ve got very similar combine results. Stafford jumped a little higher, Trubisky jumped a little farther and ran faster, outside of that they’re pretty close across the board. Here’s a few other things:

  • Stafford had a 153.9 final season QB rating, Trubisky had a 157.9.
  • Trubisky threw 30 TDs last year, Stafford didn’t throw 30 TDs ever in a college season.
  • Stafford’s final season completion percentage was 61.4, Trubisky’s was 68!
  • Trubisky averaged 8.3 per attempt in his career, Stafford 7.8.

As you can see, Trubisky compares very well to a former #1 overall pick that has now played in a Pro Bowl (2014). Looking at those numbers, you could argue Trubisky outplayed Stafford in their final seasons…. and he’s definitely a step faster.

One thing Stafford does hold over Trubisky is experience. He played in every single game while he was at Georgia, Trubisky only started a total of 13 and they were all his junior year. However, his sophmore year was also pretty interesting.

Isn’t it weird that all those numbers are so close, yet Detroit was applauded for taking Stafford while Chicago continues to get crucified in the national media for trading up to take Trubisky?

Here’s what Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay said about Stafford back in 2009….

Kiper pick: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia — Stafford is worthy of being the No. 1 overall pick, thanks to his overall skill set.

McShay pick: Stafford — It appears the No. 1 pick is Stafford’s to lose. The gun-slinging quarterback can seal the deal if he overwhelms the Lions during upcoming individual workouts, film sessions and interviews.

They both unanimously agreed Stafford was the #1 overall pick due to “his skill set.” Yet, NFL.com chose that exact skill set to compare Trubisky to and the media acts like he had no business getting taken so high.

If the college numbers are the same, their physically the same and their combine results were roughly the same …. what makes Stafford worthy of being #1 overall and the Bears the laughing stock of the 2017 Draft?

Opinions.

This year, Kiper and McShay chose to back defensive players near the top of their board so all of Chicago is furious Pace took a player “they could have waited for.” And there lies the problem….

Pace was making arguably the most important draft choice for the Chicago Bears in the next half-decade, it was his job to ENSURE he took home the player HE WANTED. That player was Trubisky and he made it happen.

Were there other holes to fill? Yes.

Does it suck to lose the picks Pace had to give up to get him? Yes.

However, at the end of the day it was Pace’s job to ensure he got his guy – and he did. That’s at least worth your respect until the scenario plays itself out.

Another important thing to remember is Kiper said time and time again that Trubisky was likely “just a year early.” That’s why Mike Glennon was signed, to get him another year of experience.

It won’t happen overnight, but Chicago can now rest assured knowing their quarterback of the future is now here. Pace is the man to thank for that.

It’s The 5-Year Anniversary Of The Saddest Moment In Chicago Bulls History

It was time for revenge.

The 4-1 Eastern Conference Finals series loss left a bitter taste in the mouth of fans and the Chicago Bulls the year before. It was a new season, though, and the Bulls had more playoff experience under their belt. The No. 1 seed in the East had Chicago destined to take another shot at LeBron James and the Miami Heat. The sad part isn’t that we never saw that rematch again, a true rematch with everyone healthy, it’s that everything went downhill for the franchise since April 28, 2012.

Derrick Rose brought the ball across half court with less than 1:30 remaining in Game 1 of the Bulls’ first round series against the Philadelphia 76ers and after a drive to the basket his career changed forever.

It’s been five years since Derrick Rose tore his ACL against the 76ers. Since then, the Bulls have returned to the postseason four times, including this year as the No. 8 seed. Yet, it’s not hard to see how that one moment led to an unfortunate spiral. The best player on the Bulls was suddenly gone. Rose missed the next year, some fans eventually turned on him, but he was simply never the same. Tom Thibodeau was fired in 2015, Rose was traded in 2016, and now the city hates the front office. Rose was once the most popular player in Chicago. Now, he’s a punchline.

I’m not sure why Thibodeau still had his starters in with a 12-point lead so late in the game, but he did. Who knows? Maybe Rose was eventually going to breakdown anyway and that’s a good possibility seeing he took a lot of punishment driving to the rim. But man, the what if is haunting. What if Rose was never in the game and didn’t tear his ACL? Would Thibs still be the coach and not Fred Hoiberg? Would Rose get better? How good would Rose have been? Would that Bulls team ever beaten LeBron?

We’ll never know.

This Bears Fan Had The Best Reaction To The Mitch Trubisky Pick

So, obviously if you’re a Chicago Bears fan you’re not going to root against Mitch Trubisky. At least not right off the bat because yes there comes a time when you do want your team to lose, you know, like the rebuilding Bears, or the Chicago Cubs when they were rebuilding. Anyway, Bears fans were rattled on Thursday night, when GM Ryan Pace traded up to the No. 2 pick, giving up their No. 3 selection and three other picks. Trubisky was drafted and let’s just say the immediate reaction was pure rage.

But now that the initial shock has passed, it’s not really the worst thing. Pace got his guy and who cares what draft picks he traded away. If Trubisky is good, then it really won’t matter. If you think Trubisky was going to be available at No. 3 no matter what, then again it doesn’t matter because Pace was drafting him. So, all that matters is if Trubisky will be good or not.

However, I won’t blame anyone for initially hating the pick and no one had a more perfect reaction than this Bears fan.

“Fucking Doug McDermott fucking all over again,” was definitely the best part. You have a fan here who’s been hurting and you might think that he’s going overboard with the “I hate the fucking Chicago sports,” but for him it’s a harsh reality.

Yeah, the Cubs just won the World Series and despite an embarrassing sweep in the playoffs, the Blackhawks won three Cups in six years. However, the fan in the video only roots for three Chicago teams. Obviously the Bears and with the McDermott reference you might have already guessed it, the Bulls.

But hey, at least the White Sox are in first place as of now.

So, here’s to hoping Mitch Trubisky is finally the franchise quarterback all Bears fans have been waiting for. But hey, anything can end up better than the Doug McDermott Bulls era, right?

New Information Reveals Pace Hid Trubisky Pick From John Fox

If people were wondering whether a divide might be forming between GM Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox, they might be onto something. There have been whispers over the past year or so that the two don’t always see eye to eye when it comes to personnel decisions. Nobody could find any hard evidence of this though and it was dismissed. Pace of course denied such things, indicating the two were in lock step.

Apparently that’s not entirely the case. According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Bears GM did not tell Fox or his coaching staff that the team would draft quarterback Mitchell Trubisky until 90 minutes before the action started. That is either taking the deception to the extreme or Pace felt there would be too much resistance from Fox. Easy to understand considering the 15-year coach had never drafted a QB in the first round before.

John Fox was in the dark

D.J. Durkin of The Athletic then expanded on his comments. It seems the decision to take Trubisky was made back in March in an agreement between Pace and chairman George McCaskey. Not only is this a remarkable revelation, it also signals who yields the actual power in the building.

There was speculation even earlier this year that the Bears might fire Fox after leading the team through a disastrous 3-13 season. In two years the team had encountered discouraging injury problems and rumored tension between the coaching staff. Nevertheless the team elected to keep the veteran coach on.

Now things have changed. How so? By getting a quarterback of Trubisky’s caliber, the Bears have transformed. Not so much into a contender. Not yet anyway. More like into a desirable destination for a new head coach. Think about it. Nobody would’ve wanted the job if Mike Glennon was their best option at quarterback.

Now how enticing might it look with a young, gifted passer like Trubisky in the fold? Suddenly Chicago could be considered a prime destination for the top offensive minds in the NFL. This pick will either ignite Fox towards the Super Bowl push he craves, or is merely the first signal that the franchise is already planning for life after him.

What’s done is done

At this point it’s not clear how Fox feels about the situation. He could be fully on board or utterly seething. No doubt he’ll be asked the question in the near future. Regardless, at the end of the day he’s not running the franchise. The Bears have said repeatedly from the start that Ryan Pace is calling the shots. He wanted a quarterback for the future, and he got it. If Fox can’t cope with that, then the team will likely go find somebody who can.

How Ryan Pace Used Nathan Peterman To Hide Draft Intentions

chicago bears

The Ryan Pace Nathan Peterman angle was almost a thing. Wait, what? Backtrack for a second. Chicago now has a quarterback of the future. Love it or hate, Chicago sent shock waves through the football world when they took Mitchell Trubisky #2 overall after trading up with San Francisco. Only it wasn’t just a surprise to the fans and media. Apparently the Bears caught all the other NFL teams off guard too.

Draft analyst Tom Pelissero of USA Today revealed some fascinating information about how the first round action went down. Perhaps his most eye-opening revelation was regarding the Bears move for Trubisky. As it turns out not only did the team have fans and media fooled as to their intention, they had the rest of the league in the dark as well.

They were so effective as it turns out that everybody assumed they were planning to take a different quarterback all together.

“The Bears began plotting to move up for Mitchell Trubisky early in the process. Somehow, there wasn’t even a whiff of that publicly before they had moved up a spot and were on the clock at No. 2. Some in the league even believed as of Wednesday night they were targeting Pittsburgh QB Nate Peterman in the second round instead.”

It’s well-documented that the Bears liked Peterman ever since they coached him at the Senior Bowl. He’s considered another Dak Prescott-type of quarterback. Not quite talented enough for the first round but could be a starter in the league that’s available later in the draft. It was a masterful deception plan that worked to perfection.

How good the Ryan Pace Nathan Peterman diversion really was

How well? Just watch the pick again via the NFL Network broadcast. Not a single one of the panel including experts Mike Mayock and Daniel Jeremiah had anything to say regarding Trubisky. They were too busy trying to process what just happened.

Say this for Pace and Fox, they sure know how to run a tight ship. They had everybody guessing. Local media were absolutely certain the quarterback would be Deshaun Watson. By draft time they were convinced QB was off the board entirely at #3 and it would likely be a top defensive player. Not only was that wrong, but the Bears hammered home how ill-informed they were by trading up to get a different QB entirely.

Naturally the boo birds came down when it was revealed how much they gave up to make the move, but by now people should know. Quarterbacks are expensive in this day and age. If you want the best one on the board, odds are you’ll have to give up extra to get him. So in answer to this here’s one last little piece of draft trivia.

How many picks have the Bears made in the third and fourth rounds since 2000? That would be 42. Now how many of those picks ended up reaching at least one Pro Bowl in their career? A whopping total of………….three. Lance Briggs, Henry Melton and Nathan Vasher being the trio. That’s not exactly a high hit rate for picks deemed so valuable. Sure there’s always a chance of finding a hidden gem, but it doesn’t happen as often as people think.

Rather than settle for three likely average players, Pace decided to roll the dice on getting a franchise QB.

Proof Surfaces Two Teams Tried To Jump Bears For Mitch Trubisky

chicago bears

Chicago is getting hammered from all sides for their decision to trade up from the #3 to #2 in order to grab quarterback Mitch Trubisky. As it turns out though the price they paid, which was two third rounders and a fourth rounder, to execute the Bears 49ers trade was spurred by heavy interest from other teams on the board that were just as interested in the young signal caller.

Nothing increases the price of a trade in the draft more than interest from multiple teams. In most cases the Bears probably could’ve given up just a fourth round pick and made the switch. The fact they had to add so much more indicates there was heavy competition for Trubisky’s services. Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times has since revealed that was indeed the case.

Bears 49ers trade was driven by two key competitors

Keep in mind that the story the entire week heading into the draft was that the Cleveland Browns loved Trubisky. So much in fact that they considered taking him #1 overall. Of course that would mean having to pass on edge rusher Myles Garrett, the top talent in the entire draft. There is no way they could justify that move. So their next best option? Take Garrett at #1 and try moving back up for Trubisky.

Then there is the fact that Kansas City gave up multiple picks including a future first rounder in 2018 in order to go all the way from #27 to #10 to grab Patrick Mahomes of Texas Tech. So it’s clear enough they had no qualms about climbing high for the guy they wanted.

That looming threat forced Pace into a decision. Risk let it happening or bite the bullet, give up the extra picks and secure your possible future franchise quarterback. Surprisingly he went against the grain of previous Bears GMs and didn’t blink by making the deal.

Reaching for greatness

Pace made it clear enough why he did it during his press conference following the end of day one action. Teams in the NFL can’t be great without a quarterback. He wants the Bears to be great and the best possible way to do that is getting the best QB in the draft. Is there risk? Of course there is. It’s the same with any top draft pick. Did Pace put his job on the line? Yes he did, but that’s the nature of the business.

He can’t expect to win in this league until he gets a quarterback. This was by far his best opportunity to get one and he took it. If that ends up getting him fired, then at least he tried. On the other hand, if Trubisky pans out then what he gave up will be considered chump change down the road. That’s how the draft has always worked. Price is never determined until the value of the player becomes clear.

Pace believes in Trubisky. Now it’s time to sit back and find out why. Smart money says Chicago may not be disappointed.

Bears Fans Will LOVE Ryan Pace Comments On His Trubisky Pick

ryan pace

When Chicago Bears GM Ryan Pace picked Mitch Trubisky with the second overall pick, he set the football world ablaze. Naturally there were plenty of critics, both national and local. The fact that he gave up two third round picks and a fourth round pick to move up just one spot? Not only that but to take a quarterback with just 13 career starts to his name? People lambasted the move for being unnecessary as the Bears could’ve just waited.

However, that’s not entirely true. Word persists that the 49ers had two other teams ready to trade for the #2 spot. That meant Trubisky was in high demand. If Pace wanted to get his guy, then he needed to sweeten the pot to do it. He did so, the Bears moved up and secured their quarterback of the future. People have grumbled ever since.

That includes a number of media members who attended the Bears press conference following the first round action. They came hard with the obvious questions. One would’ve expected Pace to shrink from the heat. He did not.

The practical reasons Ryan Pace picked Mitch Trubisky

People tend to forget that the actual top thing Pace wanted most from his quarterbacks was an ability to be accurate with his passing. Sure experience and elevating the program is nice, but it doesn’t mean much if his throws aren’t getting to where they’re supposed to go. Trubisky showed throughout 2016 and the pre-draft process that his ball placement and accuracy were consistent. Much of that due in part to his natural footwork.

Yet even when he was under pressure he managed to stick some absolute beauties into tight coverage. This throw against Pitt is a perfect example. It’s fourth down and failure to convert means the game is over. Trubisky immediately has pressure in his face. Rather than panic he hits his back step and fires a bullet between two defenders for a huge first down.

The philosophical reasons

Where Pace really delivered his counterattack to his detractors was on the wider scope of his decision. He made it clear that a team can’t be great in the NFL without a quarterback. If the Bears want to change that narrative, one that has haunted the franchise for decades, then they have to be aggressive in order to change it. Pace knows the price he paid and gave off plenty of vibes hinting he’d do it again and again.

Why? He believes Trubisky gives this team the best possible long-term chance to win a Super Bowl. In the end, if he believes that it should be enough.

Understand what has just transpired. The Bears haven’t taken a first round quarterback since 2003 (Rex Grossman). They haven’t taken one in the top five since 1982 (Jim McMahon). The last time they got the very first quarterback on the board? That would be way back in 1951. If people needed a little extra validation, here is a list of the first quarterbacks taken in every draft of the Super Bowl era.

  • 2013.  E.J. Manuel
  • 2014.  Blake Bortles
  • 2015.  Jameis Winston*
  • 2016.  Jared Goff

So of the 51 quarterbacks who were first off the board at their position dating back to 1966, a total of 26 went on to at least one Pro Bowl or won a championship during their career. That means the Bears have about 50.9% odds that they just landed a top quarterback. Given the importance of the position, that’s actually decent gambling right there. So yeah, Pace pushed in a few more chips at the table to make sure he won the hand. It was costly today, but in the long run?

It could end up being viewed as the exact right thing to do.

Details of How The Bears Swiped Mitch Trubisky Are Pretty Crazy

mitch trubisky

The Mitch Trubisky Chicago Bears draft story is a wild one. Nobody saw it coming. As it turns out that included the man being selected. Most of the football world was turned on its head when GM Ryan Pace gave up two third round picks and a fourth round pick to move up from #3 to #2 overall in order to take the young North Carolina quarterback.

It’s the details though of how all of it transpired that gets pretty crazy. As it turns out there were plenty of wheels spinning to this one. According to insider Jeff Darlington, the market for Trubisky was hot. From what he gathers in San Francisco, two other teams were in talks to move up for the second pick. This forced Chicago into a decision. Let it go or sweeten the pot.

Pace chose the latter.

The Mitch Trubisky Chicago Bears connection stunned all

Where it gets crazier is just how secretive the Bears actually were in their pursuit. Seems they were in on him months ago but didn’t want anybody to think that was the case. So they took the unorthodox approach of limiting contact with Trubisky. Aside from the combine and his pro day the team apparently had one workout with him and that was it. No private meetings or phone calls.

In essence Trubisky had zero idea that Chicago planned to draft him. When he found out that they moved up to get him, he was shocked.

In truth the fit made sense from the start. Trubisky is a smooth drop back passer with good pocket presence, a quick release and accuracy. Sort of a more talented and athletic version of Brian Hoyer. If that’s the case then the Bears are in business. Hoyer after all had some legitimate success in this offense under Dowell Loggains. If Trubisky can learn to player with a little more discipline, then this could be the exact right decision by Pace.

Of course there is a big risk. If this turns into a misfire then the entire regime is likely gone. Yet it’s also a move that needed to happen. It’s been 14 years since the Bears selected a quarterback in the first round. The last time they got the very first quarterback in a draft? That would be 1951. Their odds were never better to finally get a guy they can build around.

If keeping him in the dark about it improved their odds, then that’s what needed to happen.

Mitchell Trubisky’s Twitter History Is Pretty Outrageous

mitch trubisky leadership

The Chicago Bears have a new quarterback. It’s a moment of mixed feelings for fans. While they’re thrilled the team finally went ahead and took the plunge, they’re also furious that GM Ryan Pace gave up two thirds and a fourth round pick in order to get him. Odds are it will take time for those feelings to get sorted out. In the meantime they can sit back and enjoy some early entertainment courtesy of the young man from North Carolina. It turns out the Mitchell Trubisky Twitter history has a few demons.

Way back in 2011, when he was a teenager mind you, Trubisky seemed to have no problem expressing himself in rather crude ways. There were plenty of interesting ones, but no doubt this dandy has to take the cake.

Now in fairness he’s probably not alone in that assessment. Still, considering he’s now officially the #2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft this isn’t something he’d probably want to rehash. Then again Jim McMahon notoriously showed up to his first press conference in 1982 holding a beer. Maybe this is exactly the sort of guy Chicago needs.

If nothing else the guy either has a hidden raucous personality we don’t know about or his account was hacked. It’s easy to envision the latter in this instance. Regardless it will be fun to watch his story unfold in the weeks, months and years to come. After all, he’s the first top three quarterbacks the Bears have drafted in the Super Bowl era. Not even McMahon can say that.
