Cubs Start 2nd Half With Back-to-Back Home Runs By Willson Contreras And Kyle Schwarber

No better way to start the second half of the season than pounding back-to-back home runs and that’s exactly what the Chicago Cubs did against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday.

After Ben Zobrist hit a leadoff double, Anthony Rizzo hit a single and then Willson Contreras clubbed a no-doubter to the bullpen in left field.

Then, Kyle Schwarber drilled a bomb on the next pitch.

That’s how you come out after a break.

Can the Cubs play the Orioles all the time?

As If a Chicago Fan Could Be Any More Morose… Meet David Nwaba

John Paxson and Gar Forman continue to just fucking slay this off-season. Ya’ll know about David Nwaba? Well, if not, you will now. Because as I’m sure you can deduce from just two poorly written sentences, he’s our latest “SMH” signing.

So far the Bulls off-season plan is… this?

Re-sign Dwayne Wade with cotton candy knees with less reservation than Sling Blade ordering french fries- check.

Oh God… Sling Blade has more charm than Gar Forman…

Re-sign a guy (Cristiano Felicio) who averaged 4 points last year to a $32 million contract- check.

Trade Jimmy Butler for Kris Dunn, a damaged ACL (Zach LaVine), and a pick used to get another Mirotic- check.

Gimme some more mustard Billy Bob; I think I need to stress eat.

I could go on and on, but why? We should at least TRY to be optimistic. The guy looks like he can actually play. I mean… If he shows even the slightest bit of promise, why not? We’re rebulding, aka, grasping at straws- right?

Anyways, long story short, Nwaba played 20 games averaging six points and 3 rebounds for the Lakers last season. Aside from that, he played the majority of last season with the Lakers’ D-League affiliate, the “D-Fenders.”

Here’s some tape, silver lining is… it’s actually quite good.

Cheers Bulls fans! Here’s to another exciting year!

REPORT: White Sox Prospect Zack Burdi Needs Tommy John surgery

After such a high for the Chicago White Sox following the Jose Quintana trade, there is some bad news for one of their young and promising prospects. According to Jeff Passan, right-handed pitcher Zack Burdi needs Tommy John surgery.

The 22-year-old was a first-round draft pick of the White Sox in 2016.

Burdi is ranked as the No. 10 prospect in the White Sox minor league system.

He will get a second opinion before going through the surgery.

It’s been a tough year for the Burdi brothers.

Obviously this is terrible news, but it’s not the end of the world. Plenty of pitchers have come back from Tommy John surgery and have been completely fine and sometimes even better. Right now, you just hope the main negative coming from the situation is that Burdi’s development is slowed down.

A Message To Cubs Fans Bitching About The Jose Quintana Trade

It’s not all of you, it’s probably not the majority, I hope it’s not the majority, but I saw far too much bitching about the Chicago Cubs trading for Jose Quintana on Thursday. I don’t know what the hell is wrong with these people, but enough is enough. Jose Quintana is pretty damn good, so good in fact that he’s been as good as Jon Lester for the last 4.5 years and I know for a fact most Cubs fans adore Jon Lester, so stop with the mindless bitching about Quintana.

Oh, but the Cubs gave up way too much for him. FALSE. The Cubs gave up what it costs to get a good starting pitcher who is only going to be owed less than $35 million over the next 3.5 years.

Does it suck giving up Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease? Yes, but it’s also fucking unbelievable that the Cubs got another version of Jon Lester, just a lot more affordable who is right in his prime.

Jose Quintana hasn’t just been durable and consistent since his first season in 2013, he’s been as valuable as Lester since then too. I’m not saying Quintana is a bonafide ace but some people are acting like he’s some 3-4 starter.

No. 3 starter? Jose Quintana? Huh? Doesn’t matter what source you look at. FanGraphs, Baseball-Reference.

Another thing. I’ve seen people bring up his 4.49 ERA this year and automatically assume Quintana is just destined to be terrible forever now. It’s amazing that fans will judge a trade off 18 starts and just throw four years of being good in the trash. That’s like saying, “well the Cubs are 43-45, they’re an average team at best, they have no chance at being good again,” and completely ignoring that most of this roster was part of winning 200 games in the previous two seasons, a Wild Card Game, two NLDS, one NLCS and the goddamn World Series LAST FUCKING YEAR!

All right, we’ve established that Jose Quintana is in fact good, but you know what’s even better? Not only is he good, he has one of the best team-friendly contracts in baseball.

A quick reminder that John Lackey signed a two-year deal with the Cubs worth $32 million. Quintana makes less than that over the next three seasons during his PRIME YEARS! Do you realize how much more flexible the Cubs are now because they have another cost-controlled starting pitcher? Quintana, Kyle Hendricks and Mike Montgomery are all going to be in the rotation next year and Jon Lester will be the only other starter making big money. Having Quintana allows the Cubs to go after another good pitcher in free agency if they want, instead of scrambling to get two starters because Jake Arrieta and John Lackey are most likely (Lackey definitely) gone after this year. Or how about trying to re-sign Wade Davis? Hey look, there’s big chunk of cash for him now.

I just don’t get it. Do you hate the White Sox so much that you don’t understand how good of a trade this was for both sides? Have you never seen Jose Quintana pitch?

Again, I do understand that (at least for me) trading Jimenez stung, but guess what, he’s only 20-years-old and hasn’t played above Single-A yet. As much as I think he’s going to be a stud, he could end up being Jorge Soler. Again, this isn’t knocking him, but what did you think the Cubs were giving up for a No. 2 starter? Jimenez could also be great, but guess what, Jose Quintana can also be great for the Cubs right now.

I can’t explain the trade any better than Cubs play-by-play man Len Kasper.

Another thing. It’s not Jose Quintana’s fault that he hasn’t pitched in meaningful games before. I don’t know why fans would use the argument of, “he can’t be elite because he hasn’t pitched in the postseason.” Shit, I guess Chris Sale isn’t elite either because last time I checked he has zero starts in the playoffs. Pure stupidity from some Cubs fans.

Finally, if you bring up Jose Quintana’s win-loss record, close this page, exit your browser and whatever device you’re using, throw it in the garbage and never comment about baseball ever in your life again.

Former Bear Jason McKie Didn’t Want the Bears To Draft Trubisky

The reactions to the Mitch Trubisky draft pick by experts and fans are common knowledge at this point. It was largely a mixed response. Most of it involved either surprise, anger, despair, or a mixture of those three. The Chicago Bears have the highest pick they’ve held since 1972 and they use it on a quarterback barely a month after signing another, Mike Glennon, to a sizable $18.5 million deal. Turns out former players had the same reaction, including Bears fullback Jason McKie.

The member of the 2006 Super Bowl team has kept close tabs on his favorite franchise since retiring seven years ago. Like everybody else he was excited about the prospect of getting a true difference-maker for the roster this year. Jack M. Silverstein of SB Nation sat down to speak with him and soon the conversation came around to what transpired.

McKie explained how he emotionally processed things. Suffice to say he was not happy when the pick came through and it was Trubisky.

Former fullback Jason McKie had eyes for somebody else in Bears draft

“So when the Bears drafted him, was I upset? Yes. But after I sat back and really analyzed what they did, I give them credit for actually taking a shot at the quarterback position, a position that has needed to be fixed here in Chicago for a long time. Now you have two guys with the potential for being great as opposed to having none.

Why were you upset when they drafted Trubisky?

Honestly, because I wanted them to take a different player. I really liked Jamal Adams from LSU. I felt like he was a day one starter. I think he’s going to be a future perennial Pro Bowler. And he is the quarterback of the secondary. I felt like with Chicago, we haven’t had that type of player since Mike Brown and Chris Harris back there. Those guys are real cerebral, real smart guys who made great plays all over the field. We haven’t had that type of safety, or that type of consistency, and I felt like Jamal Adams could have brought that.

But at the end of the day, after analyzing what Pace did, am I upset? Not really. Maybe upset at how he went and traded all of his picks to do it, but he made up for it and got some of those picks back. He picked a quarterback who he felt could make a difference, so I give him credit for that.”

Bucking tradition

Like many Bears fans, McKie is well aware of the ongoing problems this franchise has had at safety. No Pro Bowlers since 2005. A run of mediocre or injury prone names over the past decade plus. Adams was a widespread favorite in the scouting community. Many projected him in mock drafts to Chicago. It seemed like such an obvious match.

Instead GM Ryan Pace went in a direction nobody has gone for well over a decade. He set about trying to fix the quarterback position. Maybe not in keeping with Bears tradition like McKie would like, but perhaps that’s a good thing.

Report: The Cubs Still Want To Add Sonny Gray, Despite Quintana Trade

Sonny Gray, Chicago Cubs, Trade

Thursday the Cubs pulled off one of the biggest trades in Chicago sports history, acquiring the White Sox top pitcher Jose Quintana, while sending their two best prospects in OF Eloy Jimenez and SP Dylan Cease.

However, even though it seemed liked the Cubs had given up their two biggest trade pieces, news is breaking today that the Cubs are still not done in their search for pitching, and are going after the other big name at this year’s trade deadline – Sonny Gray.

After reaching out to a source, he did say the Athletics have done some extensive scouting of the Cubs farm system, and that they could be interested in a Cubs “hidden gem”. However, it is far more likely that the Athletics are interested in adding some major league talent, guys like Kyle Schwarber, the former Athletic Addison Russell, Javier Baez, Albert Almora, or the rookie sensation Ian Happ.

While the news is still fresh and breaking, there is no word on what exactly the Cubs would be parting with. It is also entirely possible that the Cubs are either trying to drive up the price for their divisional foe Milwaukee, or just trying to get another team to panic and trade for Gray before the Brewers can.

Things are about to get interesting this weekend, stick to Sports Mockery for the latest news!

The Other Chicago Bears Contract Issue That May Finally Get Resolved

chicago bears contract

Among the several Chicago Bears contract situations that could become an issue in the near future, the one that continues to grab headlines is regarding top draft choice Mitch Trubisky. He’s one of the few rookies left who still hasn’t signed his deal. Some fans are concerned with this. If he doesn’t sign by July 26th he’ll be forced to sit out training camp practices until he does.

That’s a fair concern, but it might not be the most important contract negotiation for Chicago. That is reserved for defensive end Akiem Hicks. He proved to be one of the best free agent finds for GM Ryan Pace in his young career. The defensive end was outstanding in 2016, notching a career high seven sacks and being one of their best run defenders as well. Sporting Charts credit him with six “stuffs” for no or lost yardage.

At 27-years old Hicks has entered the prime of his career. Keeping him in navy blue has become a top priority for this team. Unfortunately to date there hasn’t been an extension.

Chicago Bears contract issue with Hicks finally has hope

Last year Hicks signed a two-year, $10 million contract. However, it didn’t seem to be the type of deal he wanted. So the defender parted way with original agent Frank Murtha and began searching for new representation. That is likely why negotiations haven’t seen any progress to this point.

Well that could be about to change as word broke Hicks found his new agent.

Drew Rosenhaus is considered one of the most powerful and decorated sports agents in the country. He has negotiated NFL contract for close to 100 players across his career. This includes a number of current and former Bears. He helped the team sign Antrel Rolle two years ago and helped facilitate the trade of Greg Olsen to Carolina. He’s also representing linebacker Jerrell Freeman.

So the Bears have had recent, successful negotiations with Rosenhaus. He has a knack for getting things done. Rob Gronkowski and LeSean McCoy got big pay days thanks to his efforts. No doubt a big reason Hicks hired him. However, he’s also known for being fast. In 2011, following the NFL lockout, he got over 90 contracts signed in the space of a month.

That should be music to Bears’ fans ears. It means that barring another Alshon Jeffery situation Hicks should receive an extension sooner rather than later.

Top Experts Say Mitch Trubisky Will Threaten Mike Glennon In Camp

mitch trubisky vs. mike glennon

Several local media have stuck to the Chicago Bears message since the end of the NFL draft. The Mitch Trubisky vs. Mike Glennon battle is all smoke and mirrors. This 2017 season is about sticking to the plan. The veteran Glennon gets a chance to start and earn that $18.5 million the team gave him in free agency. Meanwhile the coaching staff can take their time developing the talented but inexperienced rookie.

Of course that would go against the current of recent years. Top draft picks tend to play sooner than later. A lot of people don’t expect Trubisky to buck that trend. Not like Aaron Rodgers anyway. For one Trubisky doesn’t have Brett Favre in front of him. For another all signs out of early practices are he’s picking things up fast.

He’s obviously talented but also hardworking and smart. Some continue to warn betting against him on challenging for that starting job right out of the gate. In fact Bucky Brooks and Daniel Jeremiah, two former scouts and current NFL.com analysts, believe he’s going to give Glennon all he can handle in training camp.

Mitch Trubisky vs. Mike Glennon camp battle is for real

There’s no gray area there. The two men believe beyond a doubt that Trubisky is a threat to Glennon. Chicago did not draft him that high to sit on the bench. They believe he’s their future. Nothing would likely please them more than if he outperformed a veteran with NFL starting experience right out of the gate.

Of course that would be a crappy turn of events for Glennon. He signed the three-year deal on the belief he’d be the starter. As he’s learning though, nothing is free in the NFL. If he wants the job he’ll have to win it. Competition tends to bring the best players to the forefront. If he can’t beat out a rookie who started just 13 college games, then he shouldn’t be starting for the Chicago Bears.

Whether John Fox will have the guts to go that way is another story. He is under a ton of pressure in 2017 after going 9-23 his first two years. Failing to get some significant improvement this year could cost him his third and probably last head coaching job. The urge for him may be to go with the more established veteran in Glennon even if Trubisky outperforms him.

That’s what makes this upcoming battle almost must-see TV for Bears fans.

WATCH: Earliest Michael Jordan NBA Footage Found

Before today, the earliest footage of Michael Jordan playing in the NBA were from his first regular season game. Adam Ryan, a Jordan-era specialist who hosts a podcast called InAllAirness, posted this video with highlights of an October 7, 1984 preseason game against the Sacramento Kings in St. Louis.

The footage was from an October 19, 1984 episode of “Time Out,” a weekly sports program on PBS station WTTW. It was a show hosted by Chicago area journalists and sportscasters but this clip mostly features the predictions for Jordan’s career from NBA legends.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Walt Frazier, John “Red” Kerr, Mark Eaton, Bernard King, Al Attles, and Bob Lanier gave their take on the young Michael Jordan. The funniest take has to be Walt “Clyde” Frazier.

“Michael’s got to realize that he’s not seven foot, so he’s not going to carry a team in the NBA. I think he will be a great addition to the Bulls and should draw fans to the game, but it takes more than one guy to win games.”

Looking back it seems like a silly thing to say, but at the time 7 footers were seen as the future of basketball. Just ask the Portland Trail Blazers why they selected Sam Bowie ahead of Michael Jordan in 1984.

Frazier did come back to redeem himself to end the video by saying, “I’m sure that one day, he (Michael Jordan) should be in the Hall of Fame.”

That’s for sure.

Cubs Set Rotation, Jose Quintana To Start Sunday

The Chicago Cubs have set up their starting rotation to begin the unofficial second half of the season and newly acquired Jose Quintana will make his debut this weekend.

Quintana, who the Cubs traded four prospects for on Thursday, will start on Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles. Mike Montgomery takes the mound for the series opener on Friday, while Jake Arrieta gets the nod on Saturday.

Quintana has a 4.49 ERA and 1.32 WHIP so far in 2017, but since June he has returned to his consistent self.

A minor correction to that tweet, Quintana has had a 45/16 strikeout to walk ratio in his last seven starts.

As far as the rest of the Cubs rotation to start the second half, here’s how it’s set up against the Atlanta Braves.

As far as Kyle Hendricks, he’s getting one more start at Double-A Tennessee on Monday after pitching earlier this week.

So, right now it looks like Eddie Butler is the odd-man out, but I really hope that when Hendricks returns he takes John Lackey’s spot and Lackey is sent to the bullpen, released or just away from starting any more games for the Cubs.
