I Think Theo Epstein Said The Closest The Cubs Were To A Trade Was For Manny Machado

Credit: Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs took quite a beating in the 2017 NLCS, losing in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers that left a bitter taste in Theo Epstein’s mouth. His end of the year press conference with the media included a mention that the team would be seriously considering trading a young star to improve the rest of the roster.

Obviously that trade never happened and with an unprecedented free agent market that still has several good players unsigned, the Cubs were able to address all their needs. Yu Darvish and Tyler Chatwood were signed to replace Jake Arrieta and John Lackey, while Wade Davis and Hector Rondon waived goodbye, with Brandon Morrow and Steve Cishek being the new arms in the bullpen.

However, the addition of Darvish was until the middle of February and Epstein admits the Cubs certainly had plenty of discussions for top of the line starters. Yet, none of those talks progressed because teams were low balling the Cubs for their young players.

Epstein was on The Spiegel and Parkins Show Wednesday and said the following regarding those trade talks.

“We actually didn’t get that close. We talked about a ton of deals, but we thought we were getting back 50, 60 cents on the dollar. As we were going through that frustrating exercise, the free agent market for starting pitchers was going through a transformation as well, where certain guys were becoming a little more realistic for us. We just decided to be more open to the idea of filling all our needs without having to make trades and we ended up being able to do it.”

(Theo Epstein)

Chris Archer and Gerrit Cole were linked as possible trade targets for the Cubs this offseason.

The Cubs signed Chatwood early in December, agreeing to a three-year contract worth $38 million. It was around that same time the Cubs began to realize that Darvish could be in their range and he soon became the team’s number one target.

Darvish signed a six-year deal that guarantees him $126 million, plus incentives that could make the contract worth up to $150 million. At the end, the Cubs got Darvish at a bit of a bargain compared to this offseason’s original expectations and previous contracts given to pitchers.

So, if you were worried about any players from the core being traded then you can thank this offseason’s wacky landscape for the Cubs not getting to that point.

That being said, Epstein did reveal one big trade the Cubs were the closest to making, but the twist here is it wasn’t for a pitcher.

“We actually never got close on a big trade of young position player or players for a front-line starter, but we certainly talked about them. But we didn’t get that close.

Probably the closest we came was one position player for a variety of players. A really interesting package, but it didn’t include a front-line starter back.”

(Theo Epstein)

Oh baby! Unfortunately the conversation moved on and Epstein wasn’t asked about the details, not that he’d give those up anyway. Maybe I’m reading this completely wrong, but it really does sound like Epstein said the closest the Cubs came to making a trade was for Manny Machado?

Remember, back in December 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine reported that not only were the White Sox involved in trade talks for Machado, but that the Cubs had entered that conversation as well with the Baltimore Orioles. Then, a few days later a beat reporter for the Orioles wrote an article saying the Cubs and Orioles were indeed discussing a trade for Machado and players he heard were talked about were Addison Russell, Albert Almora Jr. and Mike Montgomery. That report never clarified if it was all three Cubs for Machado, or if those were simply the names being thrown around for consideration.

If you go back to what Epstein said, it wouldn’t appear that Russell was seriously considered because one it’d be a lot to trade a guy with that much talent and years of control without having a guarantee that Machado would re-sign.

There’s also this factor that Epstein said during his interview. He loves this core and it’s beyond a personal connection he has to these players.

“This core is a big part of our identity. It’s more than just sentimental value. If you look at the Royals winning the World Series then us winning the World Series then the Astros, I think it matters if you have a group that’s come up together, failed together, and come back succeeded together. I think it means something to them on the field. You’re going to have to face a bunch of down moments in order to get through 162 and you’re going to have to face a lot of adversity in the postseason as well, and you have to overcome it as a group.

So, we have a really good group and we’re not looking to break it up.”

(Theo Epstein)

There’s also the chance it could have been for Christian Yelich.

Anyway, we don’t have to worry about seeing any young guys traded…for now.

Despite no trades involving some of the young players for the Cubs, there was a report a month ago that said Russell was made available in the offseason. For now, the core is sticking together.

Chiefs GM Virtually Guarantees Bears Will Land This Free Agent

chiefs gm

Inside information is hard to come across in the NFL. Teams are so paranoid about revealing anything that might tip off their intentions. This is particularly true in regards to player acquisition during free agency and the draft. GM Ryan Pace is quite the wizard in this regard. His drafting of Mitch Trubisky was a masterpiece of misdirection. In some cases, though things are out of his hands. Things like Chiefs GM Brett Veach basically letting the cat out of the bag on one likely Chicago Bears free agent pursuit.

Having a new head coach in Matt Nagy means the roster will undergo changes for the Bears. As with John Fox back in 2015, there’s a strong possibility the Bears could look towards players that Nagy has coached or is familiar with. Players who understand his philosophy and his system. They could prove quite beneficial to others on the roster.

One name that has stuck out from the getgo is Albert Wilson. The former undrafted receiver was with Nagy for four seasons from 2014 through 2017. During that time he developed into a quality #3 target for the #5 ranked Chiefs offense. Veach was asked about what Wilson’s future may be. It seems he’s not even trying to hide the obvious.

Chiefs GM all but guarantees the Bears will secure Wilson in free agency

It’s no secret the Bears are in the hunt for help at wide receiver. Their passing offense ranked dead last in 2017. Their leading target was Kendall Wright who had 614 yards. That was while being targeted 91 times. Wilson managed a respectable 553 yards last year despite only getting 62 targets. It looks like his best football is ahead of him.

He’s not the biggest or fastest but Wilson is a smart player who runs sharp routes and shows good awareness and body control when making the catch. He should make a for a quality slot receiver who gives the Bears a dependable option on third down when they need to move the sticks. Such players don’t always get the headlines but quarterbacks love them more than people think.

The best part is he’s not likely to command top dollar. He should come fairly cheap, allowing the Bears to freely seek out more help at the position if they wish. Combine Wilson with two or three more upgrades and Mitch Trubisky should be all smiles this season. Free agency begins March 14th. Keep the name in mind.

Justin Grimm Is The Most Sensitive Cubs Player On Twitter

Mandatory Credit: Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

It turns out that Chicago Cubs pitcher Justin Grimm searches his name on Twitter to seek out his bashers and it’s kind of sad. Now, I have said previously that if you tweet directly at an athlete then you deserve the embarrassment that comes back your way like what Kyle Long did to some poor woman last year. However, what Grimm does on social media is really only embarrassing to himself.

Apparently this has been known throughout the Cubs fans community on Twitter, but I didn’t notice the behavior until yesterday when Grimm allowed a home run against the Oakland A’s. Grimm is currently penciled in as the eighth and final reliever in the Cubs bullpen and he’s coming off the worst season of his career. He lost his arbitration case, so maybe he’s feeling the pressure of being on the roster bubble.

Giving up home runs was Grimm’s biggest problem in 2017, allowing 12 of them in 55.1 innings. So, after Matt Olson hit a homer off Grimm in the fourth inning, Aaron Kennelly, who writes about the Cubs on northsidebaseball.com, broke down the issues with Grimm. It was pretty informative and wasn’t bashing Grimm at any point.

That’s all he said. Simply looking at some numbers and trying to provide some analysis without any name calling. Also, note that Kennelly never included Grimm’s Twitter handle, so the only way Grimm was able to see any of those tweet would be if he searched his name on Twitter, which he obviously does all the time.

So, Grimm responds and it’s nothing at first until he throws a soft jab.

And then here comes the sensitive part. Even after the exchange that had no malice involved, Grimm just had to block Kennelly.

That’s when I became aware of the fact that this happens all the time with Grimm. Again, this dude is going on his phone and searching his name on Twitter.

Everything was fine and dandy after the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, but once Grimm started to struggle in 2017, it appears as though he started to have a thinner skin. Actually, it looks like it started in spring training last year.

But Grimm had enough of Twitter in July and wasn’t active until this January. And then again, he couldn’t help but go out and see what fans were saying about him.

So, if you have ever made a comment about Justin Grimm on social media, know that he has definitely read it and if it was remotely critical of him you’re probably blocked.

Grimm, 29, is out of minor-league options with the Cubs and if he keeps looking bad he’s going to have a lot more time to search Twitter.

Mitch Trubisky Off-Season Work Has Reached Obsession Levels

mitch trubisky

Former Chicago Bears center Olin Kreutz had a great quote recently about the real reason football has lost momentum in youth sports today. It’s less about the injury risks and more about the challenges football presents. “Kids want out of football because it’s hard. It’s hard. Football’s hard.” He’s not wrong. Not only is it a physical sport, it’s a mentally taxing one too. No position proves that more than quarterback. There’s a reason only a handful of men on the planet can play it at a high level. Mitch Trubisky is trying to be one of those guys.

One must be a certain kind of crazy to embrace such a colossal task. Being a great quarterback isn’t just about talent. It’s about detail. Every little thing about what you do, on and off the field, can make the difference in winning and losing. There’s a reason it’s called the most important position in all of professional sports.

Simply being able to play it isn’t enough in the NFL. To be great, one has to want it. Tom Brady isn’t who is he because he’s got the best physical skill. It’s because he has an insatiable work ethic and unhealthy competitive fire that is impossible to squelch. It seems the young Bears quarterback may be approaching similar levels.

Mitch Trubisky “obsessive” and relentless in work to improve

Trubisky hasn’t taken much time to enjoy the off-season. He’s been working constantly since the regular season ended back in December. He even met head coach Matt Nagy, the man assigned to help elevate his game, while he was working out at Halas Hall. Teammates have already said Trubisky spends extra hours at the facilities. Now it appears he’s taken that to the next level according to Adam Hoge of WGN.

“While the original plan did not include Trubisky playing 12 games as a rookie, the Bears probably wouldn’t have it any other way now. Nagy inherits a young quarterback with plenty of live experience to build on. And it’s my understanding that Trubisky has been obsessively working on his throwing mechanics and footwork this offseason, even working out at Northwestern’s football facilities at times.”

Trubisky played like rookie QBs typically do. He flashed moments of brilliance but was uneven all year. At times it appeared the complexity and speed of the defenses he saw were overwhelming him. That’s normal. Nagy and others understand it takes time and experience for the game to slow down.

The good news is it appeared to happen gradually towards the end of the season.

He was sticking more difficult throws than before. The challenge moving forward will be a big one for NFL quarterbacks. How can he make it to where his mechanics stay consistent even under pressure. This is what separates the Bradys of the world from the rest of the lower lifeforms. They maintain their composure amidst a swirling maelstrom of bodies from head to feet. Getting to that point requires tireless practice.

It’s good to see Trubisky understands and embraces this reality.

Bears May Have a Creative Way to Land Top Wide Receiver

chicago bears jarvis landry

A Chicago Bears Jarvis Landry plan isn’t new to fans. They’ve been aware of the wide receiver’s situation in Miami for some time. A two-time Pro Bowler, the 24-year old Landry is hoping to land a lucrative payday on the open market this March. Those hopes were quelled somewhat when the Dolphins elected to use their franchise tag on him.

This means barring a change he’ll play the 2018 season for them at $15 million. While a good chunk of change, it holds no long-term security. Then again there is a prevailing belief that keeping Landry is not in the Dolphins’ plans. Instead, they could be positioning to trade him elsewhere in hopes of getting something in return.

Exact compensation for him is unknown. Likely it would take a second round pick to secure his service. Some belief maybe even a first rounder. At that rate it doesn’t seem like something Bears GM Ryan Pace would entertain. However, Miami might be getting a little more creative with their ideas than first thought.

Chicago Bears Jarvis Landry trade could involve draft position

Word has begun to leak out that the Dolphins might be angling to move up for a quarterback in this draft. That’s not a surprise. Not after they were forced to pull Jay Cutler off the street when Ryan Tannehill tore his ACL. Adam Gase likely desires a young QB of his own choosing. Unfortunately, he won’t be liable to get one sitting at #11 in the draft.

That’s why they could use Landry as collateral to help them make a jump up the board.

It’s not a bad idea. Given Landry’s reasonable value the Dolphins could make a jump up the board without having to surrender any significant draft picks. It’s a similar move they saw the Philadelphia Eagles pull off in 2016. Miami traded them the #8 pick in exchange for #11 and linebacker Kiko Alonso. Philly then jumped from #8 to #2 to grab Carson Wentz. Obviously, this creative tactic worked wonders.

It would be a win for the Bears. They’d be able to get a highly productive wide receiver without having to surrender any draft picks. Merely some pick position. They’d still be able to secure a quality talent, be that a top defender or maybe even another receiver to double down at the position. There are several possibilities in play.

What it comes down to is how the board falls before the Bears pick. If the QB Miami covets is still there, a deal could happen. That is unless the Dolphins wish to do what the Eagles did by moving up now and then working to make another move up before the draft.

Marvin Bagley III Reportedly Bulls Primary Target

marvin bagley 2018 nba draft bulls radar

Earlier today, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote a fan’s guide to tanking that is well worth your time. There are multiple useful nuggets from the piece, but perhaps none stick out more than his final sentence.

“Marvin Bagley III-Privately, this is the player that several members of the bulls organization believe is a better fit with Markkanen. it would give the bulls two versatile bigs”

Interesting.

Cowley doesn’t name a specific source, but he’s one of the most respected Bulls reporters out there. If he says that Bagley is privately their preferred target, there’s likely some truth to that.

Bagley is considered to have maybe the highest ceiling in this draft, given that he’s only 18 years old and currently dominating the nation’s toughest conference. The 6’11 Duke freshman is averaging 20.7 points and 11.1 rebounds and shooting over 60 percent from the field.

With all prospects there are flaws, for Bagley those flaws seem to include defensive effort, positional fit and a big ego. But we can delve deeper into the legitimacy of those supposed flaws at a later date.

It’s hard to see Bagley falling outside of the top four picks, and it’s hard to see the Bulls getting one of those picks without quite a bit of lottery luck. Either way, Cowley makes it sound as if the Bulls may be Hell-bent on finding a way to make Bagley a Bull.

Theo Epstein Welcomes Social Activism From MLB Players Especially With Issue Of Gun Laws

chris ballard

Theo Epstein was on The Spiegel and Parkins Show Wednesday afternoon and the Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations was asked about the lack of political and social activism in MLB compared to some high-profiled coaches and star players speaking out in the NBA. Epstein didn’t shy away from the question and said he welcomes more of it from baseball players, especially on the issue of gun laws.

Just a few weeks ago, Anthony Rizzo flew from spring training to Parkland, Fla., where 17 people were killed at his alma mater Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Rizzo’s freshman football coach and a relative of Rizzo’s agent were two of the 17 killed. Rizzo made a call for change and did so again when speaking at a vigil in Parkland.

Rizzo returned to Mesa, Ariz., and said he didn’t want to be political, but was supporting the kids from the high school after the tragic event. Most of the high schoolers who survived the mass shooting have united, calling for stricter gun laws.

Epsetin believes a change is coming in MLB, as he sees the next generation of players becoming more outspoken on social issues. As far as the gun laws, Epstein addressed the disconnect between the public’s concern and the actions of our government.

You can listen to the entire Theo Epstein interview here.

Bears Expected To Go Very Hard At Newly Available Free Agent

chicago bears muhammad wilkerson

A Chicago Bears Muhammad Wilkerson idea was born a year ago around this time. It was well-known the defensive end wasn’t on the best terms with the New York Jets. Many believed the team would look to trade him despite a down 2016. In the end, a deal never happened. Wilkerson played out another season in New York.

It seems the Jets finally gave up that hope. Given Wilkerson’s bloated contract, the odds of dealing him now were remote. Thus New York had seen enough. The 28-year old was granted his release, making him a free agent. He now becomes one of the most fascinating players on the market. Wilkerson was a beast in 2015, racking up 12 sacks.

Since then? He has eight total in two seasons. Some wonder if he just stopped playing hard after he got his big payday. An all-too-common occurrence in the NFL. Perhaps he didn’t care for the new coaching staff. It’s unknown. Yet he’s a hard talent to ignore. Maybe, just maybe he can regain that dominant for if put in the right situation.

Chicago Bears Muhammad Wilkerson idea may be more than speculation

Why is Wilkerson such a big deal to Bears fans? He represents the last piece of what could be a special puzzle on defense. Chicago already has two studs in place with Akiem Hicks and Eddie Goldman. If they can put one more up front on a similar level, that defensive front could be frightening. Wilkerson has demonstrated such ability before.

The question is are the Bears interested in making this happen? They have loads of cap space so money shouldn’t be a deterrent. It comes down to whether they trust defensive coordinator Vic Fangio can motivate Wilkerson to play better. He’s no stranger to coaching guys with character questions. I reached out to a source about whether the Bears had any interest and if they might pursue Wilkerson. I got back a fairly concise and definitive answer.

“Very Hard”

If true this is a welcome change from Pace. Normally he’s cautious about taking risks on character question marks. Even so, he knows he’s up against the clock to get this team winning football games. The reward would far outweigh the risk for the Bears. If Wilkerson were to regain even a portion of his 2015 form, this defense would be insane up front. Never mind the pending return of Leonard Floyd on the edge.

Cubs 2018 Starting Rotation Order Is Official

Kyle Hendricks, Chicago Cubs

Joe Maddon has made it official, announcing the 2018 Chicago Cubs rotation order.

The veteran of the staff, Jon Lester, will make his seventh career Opening Day start and he’ll be followed by Kyle Hendricks, Yu Darvish, Jose Quintana and Tyler Chatwood.

Lester is making his third Opening Day start with the Cubs and second in a row. The Cubs begin the year on March 29, on the road against the Miami Marlins. Lester is also lined up to start the home opener at Wrigley Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 9.

The Cubs have three pitchers in their rotation to start on opening day in 2017, as Darvish and Quintana had the honor with the Texas Rangers and White Sox, respectively, along with Lester.

So, along with Lester Hendricks and Quintana, Darvish will pitch against the Marlins, making March 31, his official debut with the Cubs. Fellow newcomer, Chatwood, will make his first start April 2, against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cubs have April 4, off so if Maddon chooses not to skip anyone, Lester is lined up to pitch the home opener, which means Darvish’s first start as a member of the Cubs at Wrigley Field will be on April 12, against the Pirates.

It’s an odd start to the season for the Cubs, who begin with a 10-game road trip at Miami, Cincinnati and Milwaukee, before coming to Wrigley Field for series against the Pirates, Braves and Cardinals.

Hendricks will pitch in a spring training game for the first time Wednesday, while Darvish and Quintana get their first Cactus League action the next two days for the Cubs.

Of Course The Strangest Thing From Spring Training Comes From Joe Maddon’s Ex Bench Coach Davey Martinez

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon has done some creative things during spring training and in the regular season to keep his team loose, yet it’s his ex bench coach Davey Martinez who has done the weirdest thing this spring training.

Martinez finally got his first chance at a managerial position, taking over a pretty talented team in the Washington Nationals. The problem has been that despite the Nationals being a good team they have never won a single playoff series. So, Martinez is trying to get his squad over the hump this year and to convey that message he brought in actual camels to camp on Wednesday.

First base coach Tim Bogar and third base coach Bob Henley each were on top of a camel Wednesday morning, as players had to walk between them to get to practice.

And of course “My Humps,” by the Black Eyed Peas was playing in the background in case no one got the message.

Just Davey Martinez learning from the master Joe Maddon. Yet, I’ll still take the Nationals losing in the NLDS this year, so sorry Davey, maybe use a mime next time.
