Kyle Fuller Franchise Tag Unlikely But Talks Going in “Positive” Direction

kyle fuller

A Kyle Fuller franchise tag situation looked almost inevitable in the eyes of most Chicago Bears fans. The cornerback is coming off the best season of his career. He posted two interceptions, 22 passes defended and were among the team leaders in tackles. He was one of their best players in 2017 and definitely earned a new contract.

This is a business though. GM Ryan Pace must tread carefully in this situation. Fuller was playing in a contract year. Everybody knows those moments tend to bring out the highest effort from players. Then once they get their money far too many regress back to being disappointments. Perhaps it’d be best if the Bears postponed the idea of a long-term extension in favor of a one-year trial run.

That is where the franchise tag comes in. Fuller gets paid top five money for 2018. If he reproduces similar results to last season, then the Bears are more assured he’s turned the corner and can give him that big deal. Except it doesn’t look like they’re wild about that idea.

Kyle Fuller franchise tag is looking more and more unlikely

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune sent out feelers to sources around the league upon arrival of the scouting combine in Indianapolis. The responses he got back regarding Fuller and the tag painted a pretty clear picture of what to expect.

Prevailing thinking of those polled Tuesday is the Bears will not use the franchise tag on Fuller, which would come at an estimated price tag of more than $15 million. The deadline to use the tag is 3 p.m. Tuesday and it will be interesting if Pace leans either direction or sits squarely on the fence when asked about it.

“He won’t get tagged,” texted one source not affiliated with the Bears.

“I don’t think they will use the tag,” said a personnel director for another club in the market for cornerbacks. “It’s a deep corner class in free agency.”

There are a few reasons this may be the case. As stated above the free agency class this year is quite rich in talent. Pro Bowler Malcolm Butler headlines the group along with Trumaine Johnson, Aaron Colvin, Rashaan Melvin and E.J. Gaines among others. Then there’s the fact that Fuller is not a Pace guy. Don’t forget he was drafted by Phil Emery back in 2014. Pace hasn’t been shy about either removing or letting walk most of the talent his predecessor acquired over the past few years.

There is one other possibility though. The Bears might be confident they can lock him up without having to use the tag at all.

With two weeks left talks are headed in positive direction

I reached out to a source to see if they could elaborate any on the situation. Details remain hard to come by, but I did get back one interesting note.

“Looks as if right now there will be no tag. The talks are positive.”

Now it’s important not to be too hasty. Positive talks can be oversold a bit too much at times. Still, this is at least an indication the Bears are in constant communication with Fuller. It would be far worse if the two sides weren’t talking. This might hint that the reason there will be no tag is that they’re confident a long-term deal can get done before that.

Some might find that hard to believe, but they shouldn’t. Keep in mind what the previous sources said. It’s a rich cornerback market. That may be good for the teams, but it’s not necessarily good for Fuller. That means his services won’t be as high in demand than if he were one of the few proven starters on the market.

With so much talent to compete with, it might be hard to get the maximum payday he’s seeking. My source said it’s somewhere in the five-year, $50-60 million range. That would put him on par with the likes of Darius Slay and Janoris Jenkins. It’s not too expensive. The Bears, with over $62 million in cap space as of now, can more than afford it.

It comes back to whether Pace believes he’s worth it. If the talks are positive, that’s a favorable sign. We’ll see if things change.

Potential Bears Free Agent Target Caught Flaunting Cubs Gear

chicago bears free agent

This time of year can be dangerous in the NFL. Too many hints, rumors, and quotes can be misconstrued to mean something they don’t. Knowing that doesn’t make them any easier to ignore though. The Chicago Bears free agent enthusiasts got an unwelcome carrot on a stick courtesy of one of the top names expected to hit the open market come March 14th.

Allen Robinson is among the most fascinating names this off-season. In 2015 it looked like the wide receiver was destined for superstardom. He hauled in 80 catches for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. From Blake Bortles no less. The next year he suffered a regression due to Bortles’ struggles and then in 2017 tore his ACL early in the year.

Now his future is clouded. Conventional wisdom believes the Jacksonville Jaguars will use the franchise tag to ensure he stays on the roster. However, that is not set in stone just yet. There is a possibility he may yet reach the open market. Were that to happen, Chicago would be one of the many teams battling for his services. Do they have a prayer if that happened?

Robinson Instagram gives Chicago Bears free agent hopes a boost

Based on what Robinson himself just unloaded on Instagram, that’s a big affirmative. The receiver was all smiles in a new photograph showing him on the front stoop of his house. That itself isn’t a big deal. It’s more what he’s wearing underneath his jacket that set off alarm bells.

Believe me when I say I’m doin just fine!

A post shared by Thee Allen Robinson II (@thee_ar15) on

It’s easy to jump to conclusions here. Just because Robinson is wearing a Cubs jersey doesn’t mean the Bears will be his predetermined destination. At the same time, it certainly won’t hurt their chances if he becomes available. He no doubt would probably love to attend more games at Wrigley Field and would get paid loads of money by the city to do so.

There’s also another interesting factor at play here. Robinson is a native of Detroit, Michigan. Coming to Chicago would put him a short one-hour plane ride from his hometown. Not to mention the visits he’d be able to make there every year when the Bears play the Lions. It’s not a bad setup. Get paid tons of money. Close proximity to your favorite baseball team. A rock’s throw away from your home city.

That would certainly make the Bears’ pitch much easier. Whether they get the opportunity? That’s for the Jaguars to decide.

Even Jordan Howard Admits The Bears Wide Receivers Suck

jordan howard

It would seem the days of the soft-spoken Jordan Howard are long gone. The Pro Bowl running back has embraced his role as an emerging team leader more than ever before. It began at the start of 2017 when he was congratulated for his outstanding rookie season. Howard didn’t mince words, saying the personal accolades meant nothing. His entire goal was finding a way to help the team win.

His play has done a great job at this. Two of his performances in 2017 led directly to overtime victories. Still, it hasn’t been enough. So now he’s decided to take on a more active approach in the off-season. Both of them involving his voice in the media. It came during a recent appearance on the popular NFL Network show, Good Morning Football.

Howard struck first when he took a page out of the playbook of former Bear Alshon Jeffery by guaranteeing Chicago makes the playoffs in 2018. That’s a bold move considering it hasn’t happened since 2010. Yet he wasn’t finished. He took it another step further when asked about what the Bears need to improve most.

Jordan Howard singles out wide receivers as teams’ biggest need

While the words were likely not meant as derogatory, Howard didn’t hold back in his assessment. In a sense, he just indicated the receivers the Bears have aren’t good enough. He’s not wrong of course. Chicago finished with the 32nd ranked passing attack in the NFL last year. Kendall Wright led the way with 614 yards. That is nowhere near good enough to win in this league. It has to get better.

If Howard sees this, the Bears brass obviously does as well. Rumors remain rampant that GM Ryan Pace and his entourage are planning an aggressive push on the wide receiver market in the next couple months. This could include free agency, the draft, and even trades. They certainly have the money to make some moves. Last estimates had the Bears at over $62 million in salary cap space.

Combined with the arrival of Matt Nagy at head coach and Mitch Trubisky at quarterback? They shouldn’t have too hard a time attracting receivers to Chicago. It will depend on how aggressive they’re willing to be. Howard made a clear statement here that there is no longer any room to play it safe. The time to start winning is now.

Yesterday’s Bulls-Nets Game Was An Excellent Tank Off

bulls conspiracy theory explain cameron payne trade

The Bulls entered yesterday’s game in Brooklyn 1.5 games ahead of the Nets. They were determined to get back on the plane just half a game up. Despite the Nets best efforts, the Bulls succeeded and reached their goal.

For starters, Zach Lavine did not play in advance of the Bulls second consecutive game tonight in Charlotte, as the team is still holding him out of back-to-backs.

Secondly, Robin Lopez received his 3rd consecutive DNP-CD. Although Justin Holiday returned to the lineup, he scored just four points in 35 minutes.

Thirdly, Cristiano Felicio played 30 minutes. He posted a -28.

Fourthly, Cam Payne got 10 shots up in just 18 minutes. He made one of them.

The hilarity of errors was a special kind of fun-bad, and thankfully our twitter friend @_MarcusD2_  chronicled several moments from the game for all of us to enjoy.

Also of note: Lauri Markkanen was brutally posterized last night. I will not be including the video because posting the murder of a stranger on the internet seems unethical. Hopefully Lauri learns from his mistake and instead of trying to take a charge, he either gets out of the way or tries to contest the shot at the rim next time. You don’t need to impress your high school or college coach anymore with charge-taking nonsense. If you want to get a stop, use your 7-foot frame, length, and athleticism to make a basketball play and challenge the shot.

Anyway, that about sums up last night’s Bulls game, and we might be in for much of the same tonight.

Ian Happ Hits Second Lead-off Home Run Of The Spring

Two days ago, Ian Happ lead off the Cubs third Spring Training game of the year by homering off of Madison Bumgarner. While pitchers are hardly using their best stuff or giving max effort this early in the Spring, it was still a good sign to see from the Cubs young outfielder who is campaigning to be the team’s primary lead-off hitter.

After getting the day off yesterday, Maddon slated Happ at the top of his lineup card for today’s game against the White Sox. Happ responded by doing this:

That baby flew straight out over the center field fence off of White Sox youngster Carson Fulmer.

Fulmer is an intriguing prospect in his own right, but he’s struggled to the tune of a 5.40 ERA and 5.78 FIP over 35 career major league innings over the last two seasons.

There’s still time for Fulmer to improve and grow into that upside that the White Sox saw in him when they drafted him 8th overall in 2015, one pick before the Cubs selected Ian Happ, who posted an .842 OPS with 24 home runs in 413 plate appearances as a rookie in 2017.

For now, though, it looks like the Cubs should be pretty thankful for the Sox passing up on Happ.

Former Cubs Player Matt Szczur Painted This Amazing Work Of Art

Former Chicago Cubs outfielder Matt Szczur has shown that not only can he play baseball, but he’s a pretty damn good artist too. His latest painting for Cubs owner Tom Ricketts might be his best work yet.

Szczur has used his artistic talent to raise money for his foundation and his painting of the iconic moment of the Cubs celebrating after winning the 2016 World Series is amazing.

You can check out more of his work and even purchase Szczur’s paintings. The proceeds benefit his foundation.

Cubs 2018 Opening Day Starter Doesn’t Seem To Be A Mystery

Joe Maddon will make it official early next week, but if you piece together the clues it’s pretty simple to figure out who will be the opening day starter for the Chicago Cubs.

After the first weekend of spring training wrapped up the Cubs scheduled their five starting pitchers this week, with Jon Lester slated to pitch today against the White Sox. Lester, 34, has made six opening day starts in his career that includes two with the Cubs. You can bank on Lester being the 2018 opening day starter too, considering the veteran lefty is lined up to start on March 29, against the Miami Marlins by having his first spring training action on Feb. 27.

Plus, Maddon was a bit over the top when talking about Lester on the first day of workouts, or maybe he was just being optimistic.

Via Cubs.com.

“Go back to the first day he was here a couple years ago,” Maddon said. “Didn’t today look better than that? He was hurt a little bit when he first arrived [in 2015]. Conversationally, he wasn’t as settled. He was coming from another spot, [and there were] high expectations, big contract. He’s definitely good in his own skin.

“I’m seeing the best version of Jon who I’ve witnessed as a person and how he goes about his business,” Maddon said. “His leadership — believe me, it’s coming out. It’s a couple years removed from the signing, and we’ve all gotten comfortable with one another and he’s definitely comfortable in his Cubs skin

“The work today was spectacular and I told him so,” Maddon said. “I said, ‘You could’ve been pitching the first game of the season the way you looked.'”

Lester had a down 2017 season, putting up a 4.33 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 180.2 innings. It was the first year since 2011 that Lester didn’t pass the 200-inning mark. He spent some time on the disabled list late in August, but appeared to be back to normal when he returned, having four good starts in his final six appearances. He also had a solid showing in the postseason, though Lester only pitched 14.1 innings in his three playoff starts.

Yet, Lester is only one year removed from finishing second in the National League Cy Young Award race, so hopefully last year’s regression was based more on a small injury and fatigue from the previous World Series run rather than that showing being the new Lester.

Back to the 2018 schedule. If Lester does indeed make the opening day start against the Marlins and no one is skipped in the rotation, he’d also be lined up to start the Cubs home opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 9.

After today’s game against the White Sox, Kyle Hendricks, Yu Darvish and Jose Quintana will follow. Tyler Chatwood already made his spring debut, pitching Monday against the Seattle Mariners.

Finally, an interesting note on Cubs opening day starters.

Aaaaaaaand it’s official.

Parkland High School Overcomes Tragedy to Win Hockey State Title

parkland

Humanity is a such a fascinating species. Even in the midst of utter tragedy and devastation, there can be instances of such wonderful heroism. In the darkest hours, unlikely people rise to help their friends, family and fellow neighbors experience a little bit of joy. It seemed like this was impossible for Parkland, Florida following the barbaric mass shooting that cost 17 people their lives.

As the media and politicians descended on the event, turning the horror scene into yet another political battleground on gun control, the citizens of the town were ushered to the background. What about them? Who was going to comfort them and remind them that it’s okay to smile again?

Just like those courageous kids who began to organize marches to fight back on gun control, it was an unheralded team of young men who stepped up.

Parkland hockey team beats odds to win Florida state championship

Ground zero for the shooting was Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Expectations for how the kids would respond to the tragedy were unknown. All they could do was push forward, including in their sports. The school has a prominent hockey program and their varsity team had managed to reach the four-team playoff in the state final. From there? Magic happened.

“Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s boys varsity hockey team won the Florida state championship on Sunday, 10 days after 17 students and staff members were killed in a mass shooting at the school.

Playing in the Statewide Amateur Hockey of Florida High School State Championship, the Eagles won two games on Sunday, including a 7-4 win against Jesuit High School in the Tier 1 final. Douglas, which entered the four-team playoff as the fourth seed, defeated top-seeded East Lake High School, 3-1, in its first game Sunday.”

Sometimes emotion can be the deciding factor in performance, be it sports or otherwise. There is no doubt playing in the backdrop of the shooting, the memories of losing friends and schoolmates that day, made it highly emotional for those young men. Their ability to respond with such determination and grit is a testament to the people they are and the adults they’ll soon become. What a story.

Jarrett Allen Just Killed Lauri Markkanen

This was pretty rough to watch live and the replays only make it worse for our guy Lauri Markkanen. Jarrett Allen dunking all over Markkanen is exactly what you love to see if you’re a Brooklyn Nets fan and absolutely awful if you’re a Chicago Bulls fan.

Goddamnit this was painful for Lauri.

Hey, we still have Zach LaVine’s dunk that literally sent a player to the G-League.

Bears Could Make Aggressive Play for Dark Horse Trade Option

The Chicago Bears 2018 plans have started off on the standard procedure. They’ve gone about the business of unloading players that are no longer part of their future plans. Josh Sitton, Jerrell Freeman, Pernell McPhee and Quintin Demps are out thus far. Names like Mike Glennon and Markus Wheaton are expected to join them sooner than later. Yet some people have an eerie feeling.

Sort of that cliche “calm before the storm” feeling. It’s important to remember that a new coaching staff is in charge. Typically when this happens there is an outbreak of unexpected movement. Not just cuts, free agency or the draft either. Quite often there are some trades mixed in. One that the previous regime never would’ve signed off on.

Take the Los Angeles Rams for example. They shifted coaches in 2017. Outside of the draft, they made four different trades including a blockbuster to get Sammy Watkins from Buffalo. Could GM Ryan Pace, notorious for his somewhat conservative approach to trades outside the draft, flip the switch this year?

Chicago Bears 2018 game plan may involve dealing for a wide receiver

Trades often can take shape and dissipate quickly. They’re hard to predict because they can happen with almost no warning. Intention to trade though? That’s a different story. I spoke to a source who told me the Bears are thinking aggressively this spring. They want to hit the ground fast at wide receiver in hopes of finding Mitch Trubisky better weapons. A bold trade might be the perfect solution.

There are even some names in the mix.

“The Bears believe they have to make a trade for a wide receiver. The names I’ve been given are Emmanuel Sanders, Demaryius Thomas, Martavis Bryant, Tyler Lockett, and John Ross.”

The first initial reaction is surprise. Namely that Jarvis Landry, who is widely known to be available in Miami, isn’t on that list. Then again it shouldn’t be. Pace is a bargain hunter. He loves to seek out cheaper options on the market in hopes of maximizing their abilities in a system that fits them. Landry, being a two-time Pro Bowler, will be expensive. The names on the list above won’t be for various reasons.

Lockett stands out as the most interesting option

Sanders and Thomas are veteran options out of Denver. They’re both in their 30s now and will come with hefty contracts. The Bears would be gambling that they have gas left in the tank. Bryant is a tall deep threat from Pittsburgh. He’s lived most of his career in the shadow of Antonio Brown and wants a bigger role in the offense. He’s got ability but he’s also got baggage.

As for Ross, he’s the speed demon who broke the scouting combine record with a blistering 4.22 in the 40-yard dash. He was also a productive target at Washington. Yet he was a complete wash his first year in Cincinnati. For whatever reason the coaches refused to play him, leaving some to wonder if he was hurt or had an attitude problem. Now his future there is unknown. The most intriguing name on that list is Lockett.

Why is that? A few reasons. For starters, the Seattle Seahawks may be in selling mode. Their once vaunted core is aging quickly and it looks like a fire sale could be imminent. This means they might seek out deals for draft picks. Seattle is no stranger to trading, but why Lockett? Namely, because he’s not a featured part of their offense and he’s entering the final year of his rookie contract. This could be their last chance to get something for him.

From the Bears’ perspective, he could bring a ton of value. Lockett is the type of receiver who would thrive in the Matt Nagy offense. A sharp route runner with speed and after-the-catch running ability. If they wanted somebody who could fill that Tyreek Hill role, Lockett wouldn’t be the worst choice. Odds are he’d come fairly cheap, somewhere around a fourth round pick. The Bears have two at their disposal. He turns 26 in September.
