This Cubs-Themed “The Office” Intro Is Incredible

It’s no secret that Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon is a huge fan NBC’s hit show, “The Office” and over at Cubs Insider an incredible Cubs-themed intro video featuring the show’s catchy tune was created.

Maddon was in his first spring training as the manager of the Cubs back in 2015, when he let everyone know just how big of a fan he was of Michael Scott among others.

Then a year later, when the Cubs were in the World Series, Maddon once again referenced “The Office” and jokingly said the beloved character of Michael Scott was his mentor.

“Michael Scott (is) probably the biggest influence,” Maddon deadpanned with only a hint of a smile to betray the joke. “That’s ‘The Office,’ for those who don’t watch TV.”

That inspired this amazing video created by Cubs Insider.

Bravo.

And in case you haven’t heard, there’s also a new version of “Go Cubs Go” sung by the players themselves.

Hate it, love it, feel indifferent about it, think it doesn’t make sense to play after a win, it doesn’t matter because “Go Cubs Go” is never going away, so obviously the next reasonable step is to have the players sing it. That’s exactly what WGN has given Chicago Cubs fans.

Top Draft Prospect Set to Meet Bears at Combine, And He’s Very Happy

calvin ridley

Wide receiver is without question one of the top two needs for the Chicago Bears this 2018 off-season. The other is edge rusher. So it makes perfect sense they’d prioritize those two positions in their evaluation process at the scouting combine. This represents the latest chance for GM Ryan Pace, head coach Matt Nagy, and the rest of the team brass to meet with several top prospects face-to-face. Few seemed more excited about that idea than Alabama receiver Calvin Ridley.

Most fans are well aware of him by this point. Despite being trapped in a run-first offense and saddled by poor quarterback play, he still managed to produce impressive results on the field. For two straight years, he was the only legitimate passing threat the Crimson Tide had. For two straight years, they were in the national championship game.

He finished his college career with 2,781 yards and 19 touchdowns. Considering how limited the passing game was over that span, the numbers are deceptively impressive. So it’s no wonder the Bears would have interest in meeting him.

What many don’t know is that Ridley may be even more eager to meet them.

Calvin Ridley sounds dead set on finding a way to join Bears

Last year it was revealed that he was a Bears fan. He said as much on Twitter and was tickled when his former teammate, Eddie Jackson, was drafted by them in the fourth round last spring. When asked about his thoughts on the team, Ridley didn’t hold back his admiration and also his desire to join in on the fun.

In terms of scheme fit, Ridley would be right at home under Matt Nagy. His strengths include speed, quickness, agility and sharp route running. All are big requirements in a West Coast system. His experience should also help him acclimate quickly. So why is he not the favorite to go #8 overall when Chicago picks?

Well aside from being thinner than ideal, the big issue is age. Ridley is already 23-years old and he’ll be 24 in December. Teams generally want to get the maximum return possible on a first round pick in the draft. So age plays a big role. A prospect who is 24 his first year maybe 28 by the time his rookie contract expires. Unless they’re a big success right away, this decreases the long-term effectiveness of the pick.

Unless the Bears were to trade out of the top 10 and pick him later in the round, it doesn’t feel like this is a leap they’ll be prepared to make. That is unless Ridley blows them away in meetings like this one.

Bad Luck Continues For Ex Cubs World Series Pitcher

Cubs Make a Big Rotation Change

Travis Wood hasn’t had many things go right for him since he last pitched for the Chicago Cubs. We remember him at the World Series parade, going shirtless, but there hasn’t been much joy on the field for the lefty in the past couple years. He was hoping to get his career back on track with the Detroit Tigers this season, but now he’ll most likely be out the entire year after suffering a torn ACL.

The knee injury for Wood comes after he came to Tigers’ camp with a finger injury from a crossbow incident back in January. The accident almost cost Wood his finger, but luckily that wasn’t needed. He was making his spring training debut with his new club on Thursday, when he tore his ACL and medial meniscus in left knee after beginning a rundown.

Wood, 31, split time with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres in 2017, and it didn’t pan out. He pitched in 39 games, making 14 starts, while posting a 6.80 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 94 innings.

He signed a minor-league deal with the Tigers this offseason, but Wood’s spring training was delayed after this happened on a hunting trip.

Ex Cubs Pitcher Nearly Lost His Finger In Freak Accident

Hopefully Wood makes a speedy recovery from this knee injury and who knows maybe he re-invents his career to being a designated hitter/4th outfielder.

Javier Baez Makes Another Difficult Play Look Easy

Javier Baez is simply the best.

Chicago Cubs fans have seen the awesomeness for years and during spring training it’s nice that he gets to show off against other teams that don’t usually get to see him. A real treat for the opposing fans too.

Baez has already made a few incredible plays on defense this spring and he did it again, making an over-the-shoulder catch look so easy against the Angels on Friday.

Baez should be the primary second baseman this year, so we might finally see him win a gold glove that is long overdue for El Mago.

Chicago Bears Scouting Combine Brass May Have Betrayed Plans

The Chicago Bears scouting combine entourage was no doubt fully loaded. Everybody of consequence from GM Ryan Pace to head coach Matt Nagy are down in Indianapolis taking a look at some of the best talent the 2018 NFL draft has to offer. The Friday, March 2nd contingent marks the first of three days for the event. Three position groups conducted drills during it:  running back, offensive line and the special teamers.

Much of the attention of the day was on Penn State superstar Saquon Barkley. He showed why. The running back annihilated every drill, delivering 29 reps on the bench press, a 41-inch vertical leap, and a 4.4 time in the 40-yard dash. The fact he did all that at 233 lbs? The guy is a freak and almost certain to get himself drafted in the top 10, if not the top five.

However, signs indicate the Bears had little interest in him or the rest of the running backs for that matter. Their focus was almost entirely fixed elsewhere.

Chicago Bears scouting combine brass had eyes for the offensive line

Reports down in Indy didn’t reveal much about what certain teams were doing. They stayed focused on the action. That is until Da Bears Brothers, who were attending the combine, noticed something odd about the section where most of the Bears higher-ups were located.

It’s easy to read too much into something like that. By itself it shouldn’t mean much. Then again, there are other factors in play here. Don’t forget that Josh Sitton was just cut by the team. Kyle Long is also coming off multiple surgeries this off-season. Their offensive line situation may not be as secure as some want to believe.

Then there’s the arrival of Nagy himself. Being an offensive guy he might not view the current crop of blockers the Bears have as ideal for the system he wants to implement. Last but not least, the team has quietly been active in meeting with several line prospects for the past couple months. Aaron Leming of Bear Report last indicated they’ve met with no less than five prospects between the Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl.

  • Brian O’Neill (Pitt)
  • Alex Cappa (Humbolt St)
  • Brandon Parker (NC A&T)
  • Brett Toth (Army)
  • Jamar McGloster (Syracuse)

That number is almost certain to go up after what they just saw at Lucas Oil Stadium.

2018 O-line group put on an athletic clinic

One thing is for sure about what the Bears saw. This crop of linemen is athletic specimens. It didn’t seem to matter which drill the Bears watched during the action. Everyone saw a prominent prospect delivering a freakish performance. It started with powerhouse guard Will Hernandez. Considered the second-best by many at his position in the draft, he racked up an absurd 37 reps of 225 lbs on the bench press.

Hernandez also had a respectable 5.06 time on the 40-yard dash, especially given he’s over 340 lbs. The best run though was reserved for Pitt offensive tackle Brian O’Neill. The Bears met with him at the Senior Bowl last month. They must’ve liked what they saw when he blew away the rest of his competition with a blistering 4.80.

Perhaps the biggest buzz of the day though went to UCLA tackle Kolton Miller. By himself, the young man is something to look at. He’s every bit of 6’8″ and weighs north of 300 lbs. Guys that size isn’t typically known for their explosion or athletic prowess. He squashed both those myths when he shattered the old combine record with a 10’1″ mark in the broad jump.

It’s worth noting that tackles who post great jumps like that end up going in the first round and become productive starters in the pros. Some recent examples? Lane Johnson in Philadelphia, Taylor Lewan in Tennessee, and Eric Fisher in Kansas City. Given the Bears now have top O-line coach Harry Hiestand on board, they might be viewed as a kid in a candy store watching all these athletes perform.

Chicago Bears Jarvis Landry Rumors Get Another Strong Push

chicago bears jarvis landry

The Chicago Bears Jarvis Landry rumors began months ago when the 2017 season ended. It seemed apparent at that point the 24-year old wide receiver was going to hit the open market. He had reached any sort of common ground on a contract extension with the Miami Dolphins. More than that his style of play didn’t seem to mesh with head coach Adam Gase’s offense.

That didn’t stop the Dolphins though. They placed the franchise tag on him anyway. For a moment it looked like someone in the building had changed their mind. However, that didn’t last long. Word soon came out that Miami was merely using the tag as a means to execute a trade. It’s clear they wish to get something back in return for losing Landry.

Something more than the likely third round compensatory pick he’d yield upon signing with a new team. Either way, it seemed like the Bears’ hopes were dashed. While they had the money to secure his services, trading a higher draft choice for Landry doesn’t seem doable for them. At least that’s what most thought.

Chicago Bears Jarvis Landry pursuit isn’t over yet

Landry and the Dolphins met at the scouting combine this week to discuss plans. Landry was granted permission to talk with other teams about a possible trade. If and when he found a potential suitor, he’ll be required to sign the franchise tag in order to execute the deal. According to insider Josina Anderson, two teams have emerged in the early running as possible destinations.

It’s likely there will be more but things got interesting from there. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald confirmed that the trade explorations had begun and he named one team that stood out above others for the moment.

“The Dolphins are seeking a draft pick or a player in exchange for Landry. Chicago is among teams that has emerged as a possibility.”

There is no surprise the Bears would be interested. When you had the worst passing offense in the NFL a year ago, it makes sense you’d seek out every avenue possible to upgrade at wide receiver. Landry is the best option on the table outside of maybe Allen Robinson who may also get tagged in Jacksonville. Landry is younger and already a two-time Pro Bowler.

Are the Bears a favorite to get him though?

What everybody wants to know is the simple answer. Do the Bears have a legitimate shot at him. A source informed me that while the team is definitely in on the sweepstakes, the odds aren’t looking favorable at this time.

“Yes, the Bears are one of the two teams talking to Miami. Can’t say for sure they won’t be his trade home but the feeling is he’s going elsewhere.”

There is something key to remember here. It’s not only draft compensation the Bears have to worry about. They also have to sign Landry to an extension. Rumors have hinted he’s seeking somewhere around the $15 million per year mark. That would put him on the same level as A.J. Green. Is Landry the same threat as Green? Not really, no. Last but not least, would Landry even want to come to Chicago?

The Bears haven’t had a winning season since 2012. It seems hard to fathom he’d willingly come here if another team with a more recent track record of success was also interested. Just something to keep in mind as this process plays out.

Kyle Fuller Has a Strategy Regarding Bears Contract Talks

Based on how the winds are blowing, it’s clear the Chicago Bears and cornerback Kyle Fuller are mutually interested in a long-term contract. GM Ryan Pace stated at the scouting combine that the dialogue between the two sides has been “pretty aggressive.” This would seem to indicate that the team is serious about locking up their former first round pick.

People like to compare this situation to Alshon Jeffery. Except they’re nothing alike. Fuller is coming off the best season of his career where he had two interceptions and 22 passes defended. Jeffery battled injury in 2016 and also got suspended for PED violations. He also didn’t want to stay in Chicago and later information soon revealed.

According to Hub Arkush of Pro Football Weekly, the growing sentiment is that’s not the case with Fuller. He wants to stay in Chicago. At the same time, he isn’t stupid. This might be his best opportunity to land top NFL money and doesn’t plan to waste it.

Kyle Fuller ready to play contract chicken with Bears

“Free agent cornerback Kyle Fuller very much wants to stay with the Chicago Bears and intends to do all he can to make that happen…

…The way I’m hearing it, Fuller is uncertain right now whether the Bears will use the franchise tag on him or not, but the suspicion is that they won’t. If they don’t, his plan is to test free agency, find out what his market value is and then do everything he can to get that money from the Bears and stay where he is.”

This is a smart tactic by Fuller. By playing this down to the wire he’s trying to force the Bears’ hand, getting them to up their offer as high as they dare. If he’s still not satisfied, he can test the market. If no other team blows that offer away, then he knows that’s the best he’ll get and can return to Chicago, having gotten the absolute most money he could hope for.

This is similar to what happened with Lance Briggs back in 2008. The Bears let him get feelers out on the market. When he got his information back, he chose to sign a six-year extension to stay with the team. There’s definitely some risk involved for Chicago. It involves trust that Fuller is telling the truth and he wants to stay. Still, there are reasons to think this is the case.

Fuller has multiple reasons to stay put

For one, it might not be a wise career decision to leave the man who turned his career around. Fuller might be just a blip on the radar screen if not for the tireless efforts of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. During the 2017 off-season, the two seemed to grow closer, playing golf together among other activities. Fangio helped bring Fuller back from the knee injury that robbed him of the entire 2016 season.

No doubt Fuller feels a sense of loyalty to him for those efforts. Then there’s the more practical element. The 2018 free agent crop of cornerbacks is richer than normal. Everybody knows the laws of business. The higher the supply, the lower the demand. A lower demand means less money. In other words, Fuller may not get the big payday he hopes for by leaving. It would be better served for him to take what the Bears offer and stay put rather than risk it.

White Sox Picked To Reach World Series In 2018

Since the White Sox rebuild officially began back in December of 2016, fans and experts alike seemed to agree that 2020 was the year they would be competing for championships. The optimists have convinced themselves that they can make a run for the second wild card spot this season. Well yesterday, MLB Network’s Kevin Millar took it one step further. One giant step further.

Kevin Millar Predicts White Sox Reach The World Series In 2018

MLB Network is currently in the middle of doing their annual “30 Clubs In 30 Days” segment where they tour every team’s Spring Training facility and bump out content nonstop. Yesterday they stopped at Camelback Ranch and discussed the future of the White Sox. The interview that stood out most featured Michael Kopech, Carson Fulmer, and Lucas Giolito. When the time to compete rolls around, they believe they can have five legitimate no. 1 aces in the rotation.

At the end of the day, predictions were made for what would become of the 2018 White Sox season. Let’s just say they were pretty respectable, but also VERY bold.

Before people lose their minds, I have to say even I think that the White Sox making the playoffs is a bit of a reach, let alone the World Series. When Millar says the “young bloods will shine”, they are REALLY going to have to shine. As in Moncada hitting .300 with 30 steals and 30 home runs, Kopech, Giolito, Lopez, and Rodon to all have an ERA in the low 3’s, Eloy coming up and absolutely raking from the start, and Tim Anderson to vastly improve upon his sophomore slump campaign.

The second prediction of being in the hunt until the end of the season makes a lot more sense. It is still going to take around 85 wins to be in that discussion, but if everything goes right, then the White Sox should at least have a shot to be in the thick of things towards September.

Predictions really don’t mean anything this time of year, but it is nice to see that the White Sox are finally starting to gain some national respect. This is one prediction that South Siders would love to become a reality.

Ian Happ Stays Red Hot, Hits 3rd Spring Training Home Run

Ian Happ might be making a lot of Albert Almora Jr. fans unhappy because if he keeps this up Joe Maddon might be giving him more time than expected in center field. Happ is on fire through the first week of spring training, as he hit his third home run in Cactus League play for the Chicago Cubs on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies.

The two-run homer was his second from the right side of the plate, which is really encouraging. Happ had an awesome rookie season in 2017, but had a .789 OPS against left-handed pitching, nearly 100 points lower than against righties. So, if Happ can continues to improve against lefties, he’ll definitely force Maddon’s hand in the regular season.

Yes, it’s only four spring training games, but you have to love Happ’s approach as he enters his first full year in the majors.
