White Sox May Have Found A Hidden Gem In Their Bullpen

-

The White Sox have outperformed expectations to this point, as they are .500 and currently hold a Wild Card spot as we hit Memorial Day. While it is a long season and a lot can change, it is finally nice to watch the White Sox play competitive baseball again.

Hopefully, as the season progresses, they will continue to get boosts from the farm system, as top prospects such as Hagen Smith and Braden Montgomery will likely make their debuts in the next few months. Additionally, injured players like Kyle Teel and Everson Pereira should join the team in the next month as well.

The White Sox will need some more reinforcements in the bullpen if they want to hold their wildcard spot, but thankfully there are some in-organization options that can potentially help round out the last few spots. The White Sox already have a success story in their bullpen that fits that exact description, as they have gotten a significant contribution out of Tyler Davis this season.

Davis went undrafted out Sam Houston State University and eventually made his way to the Independent Pioneer League, where he would pitch for the Oakland Ballers. The White Sox liked what they saw and signed him off their roster in 2024.

Davis would pitch in four different levels for the White Sox organization in 2024, pitching pretty well. In 41 innings, Davis had a solid 3.46 ERA. Following that season, Davis spent the entire 2025 season with the Birmingham Barons. Over 54 innings, Davis had a 3.17 ERA, striking out 64 batters in 54 innings.

This earned him a promotion to AAA to open the 2026 season, and after seven solid innings with the Charlotte Knights, he made his major league debut with the White Sox in Chicago on April 25th.

Since then, all Davis has done is provide a much needed stable presence out of the bullpen.

So far in 14.2 innings, Davis totes a 2.45 ERA and an elite .82 WHIP. He has struck out 13 hitters and batters are only hitting .083 off him. Those are impressive numbers. While he will need to cut down on the walks, you can’t ask for a much better start.

If Davis can keep this up, he will firmly plant himself in a nice setup role for the rest of the season. Davis is 27, so he could make himself a long term piece if he continues to get outs.

This is a huge win for the White Sox player development system, as they may have turned something out of nothing. Getting a valuable mid inning reliever out of the Independent Pioneer League is an impressive feat, and it proves that the White Sox need to continue to give more players an opportunity to win the last few spots in the ‘pen.
