Sportsbooks Keep Linking Tyreek Hill To The Bears, But There’s A Big Problem

-

One thing we’ve learned about Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is that there is no such thing as too many weapons on offense. He believes the more you have, the less capable an opponent is of stopping. We’re not just talking about star power at the top. We’re talking about depth as well. It is the coach’s responsibility to find ways to use all the weapons available, a challenge Johnson seems to relish. That is why he has pushed the Bears to keep adding pieces even when it seems like they don’t need more. We saw that with tight end Sam Roush and wide receiver Zavion Thomas in the draft. Would he dare take it a step further with Tyreek Hill?

The former All-Pro has been recovering from a torn ACL last season. He was released by the Miami Dolphins as they entered a rebuilding phase. Since then, he has been waiting to sign with a team. Thus far, nobody has bitten. This is somewhat surprising since he’s only 32 and still had plenty of speed before the injury. While known for being a malcontent at times, you’d think at least one team might be willing to take the risk. Apparently, lots of sports bettors continue trading in the belief that he ends up in Chicago.

Tyreek Hill is an unnecessary gamble.

One must remember this is a player the Kansas City Chiefs willingly traded despite him being one of the three or four best at his position in the entire NFL at the time. That should tell you how complicated he can be on a roster. The same proved true in Miami. For all of his obvious talent, Hill eventually started creating unnecessary drama whenever the team was struggling. That doesn’t even include the domestic violence accusations that have followed him for years.

Look at the facts. Even if he did sign in Chicago, he would not be the primary target. That honor is almost certainly going to Colston Loveland or Luther Burden. Hill does not like it when he’s not the focal point of an offense. You saw that in 2023 when Jonnu Smith and De’Von Achane started eating into his target share. Johnson’s offense is known for not funneling the ball to one guy. It gets spread around. Would Hill be okay with that? Every piece of evidence we have says no.

Ask the important question here.

Do the Bears need Tyreek Hill? The answer is no. They have more than enough talent at wide receiver to produce another productive passing attack. Spending the money necessary to sign him, and all the baggage that comes with it, feels too much like subtraction by addition. It doesn’t make the Bears a better team. This isn’t peak Hill anymore. At best, you’re probably getting around 75% of that guy. While it would still be a good player, it wouldn’t be enough to justify the risks involved.

Maybe that changes if the Bears suffer a notable injury. Were Burden or Rome Odunze to go down for the season at some point, maybe then the team would be willing to take the chance. We already saw that happen last season with C.J. Gardner-Johnson. That went well enough. If Hill is just interested in continuing his career rather than being the guy on offense, it could work. As things stand, that isn’t a road you should expect the Bears to go down anytime soon.
