Chicago Bears Legend Diagnosed With Tragic Condition

gale sayers

Even during the darkest times in Chicago Bears history, there have been beacons of brilliant light. Matt Forte during the sad decline of the past decade. Mark Carrier amidst the listless 1990s. Nobody personified that life better though than Gale Sayers. Amidst the steepest decline in franchise history between the late 1960s and early 1970, his incredible ability and story were an inspiration to many.

Even without a single playoff appearance or championship ring, legions of football fans still know who Sayers is. He’s the youngest member ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He made it in despite only playing 68 games in his career. A testament to the impact he made on the game.

Unfortunately like many players who suited up during those more violent eras of the game, Sayers is battling medical problems in his later years. Vahe Gregorian of The Kansas City Star breaks it down.

“Gale Sayers, who 40 years ago became the youngest player ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was diagnosed with dementia four years ago, joining nearly 50 million people worldwide.

But Ardie Sayers has come to believe its onset was years before that — possibly even as far back as when he returned to Kansas in a fund-raising capacity for a time in 2009.

While she considers Sayers, 73, physically healthy “as a horse” and notes he is working out with a trainer several days a week, she added, “That brain controls everything, doesn’t it?”

Some of his days are better than others.

On Wednesday, he scarcely spoke during a seven-hour visit by The Star.

But other times, he can hold halting conversations, and Ardie Sayers and friends believe there is a lot happening inside that he just can’t get out.”

Brain conditions from dementia to CTE are the ongoing plague for the NFL and sport of football in general. The league has taken massive steps in the past decade to both understand the conditions and find ways to make the game safer. Sayers is not the only former Bears icon dealing with dementia. Former quarterback Jim McMahon, captain of the legendary 1985 Super Bowl team, was diagnosed years ago.

At this point all people have left of Sayers in the sport are the highlights and the memories. They are truly special ones.

Nicknamed “the Kansas Comet” he struck the NFL like a bolt of lightning in 1965. Nobody had seen a skill set like his before. So fast, so athletic, so agile and so smooth. Defenses couldn’t touch him. His rookie season he compiled a ridiculous 22 touchdowns as a running back and return man. The fact he did it in just 12 games made the feat seem superhuman. In his first three seasons he scored an absurd 46 touchdowns.

If not for a bad knee injury suffered in 1968, there’s no telling how great he would’ve been. Sadly such is the nature of the sport. It takes a toll on the body and the mind, which is why one must love it. Sayers clearly did and says so all the time. Bears fan should never forget the contributions he made to the franchise, getting it through some dark times.

The Cubs Have Interest In Tampa Bay Rays Pitcher Alex Cobb

The Cubs are still pushing for more starting pitching, even after adding young, promising arms like Eddie Butler and Alec Mills to the roster. But with reality setting in on Jake Arrieta potentially leaving Chicago after this season, the Cubs are keeping all options open to try and replace the 2015 Cy-Young winner.

Rumors swirled this offseason with the Cubs having interest in a wide variety of young, talented arms, like the Oakland’s Sonny Gray or Tampa Bay’s Chris Archer. The Cubs want to find younger arms to add to their team to build a potential core around Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester, and another talented arm to solidify their rotation for the next half decade.

However, with both the Rays and Athletics being small-market teams, it makes the move of one their talented arms extremely unlikely. But, there are new rumors involving another pitcher who has had prior connections to the Cubs and could possibly help soften the loss of Arrieta.

Bears Hit It Big Last Time They Took Chicago Native #3 Overall

The Chicago Bears are making every effort possible to drop a fog over their plans for the #3 pick in the upcoming draft. It was cornerback and safety. Then they signed Quintin Demps, Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper. Next it was wide receiver following the exit of Alshon Jeffery. Not long later they brought in Kendall Wright and Markus Wheaton.

Even the quarterback problem was seemingly addressed with the arrival of Mike Glennon. GM Ryan Pace has said his entire goal for free agency was to fill roster needs so he could go best player available in the draft. This is how he’s operated for two years, and results are improving. The problem is it’s much more difficult this season to figure out who the best player with be when the Bears pick at the #3 spot.

Though the draft is considered exceptionally deeper than normal at several positions, the top tier talent is somewhat lacking. Mostly due to injuries or lack of experience. There is one player though that has begun to stick out. Best of all is he may have something special about him that makes the potential selection even more exciting.

5 Available Free Agents The Bears Should Strongly Consider

I reflected last week on the state of the Chicago Bears a few days into free agency.

Even while striking out on the top cornerbacks on the market, they’ve been active as hell. There’s no doubt. And they’ve positioned themselves well by adding depth and competition at most of their need areas across the roster.

Through this process, GM Ryan Pace has been masterful at setting the team up to draft the best available player in each round of the upcoming NFL Draft as he builds the roster from the ground up.

In addition to the moves I outlined in last week’s column, Chicago just signed nose tackle John Jenkins for defensive line depth, and there are reports that DL Ricky Jean-Francois is on his way to visit the Bears as well. Defensive line was one area the Bears neglected until now, so it’s good to see them add depth there too.

That said, the Bears would be well served by continuing to tinker with the roster and bring in even more competition as preparation for the draft continues. That’s how rosters get better. And for a team like the Bears, there should be no resting on their laurels.

So, here are five, still available, somewhat luxurious rather than realistic, free agents the Bears should consider signing to set themselves up even better.

How The Bears Have Done With The “Wait Until Later” QB Draft Strategy

This is the first time in almost a decade that the Chicago Bears quarterback position is in a violent state of flux. All three players who occupied that part of the depth chart in 2016 are gone. Jay Cutler was released. Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley became free agents. GM Ryan Pace clearly wanted a clean break across the board to start fresh and he got it.

Of course now comes the hard part. Decided what to do next. It’s clear the team has formulated the early stages of a plan. Connor Shaw was re-signed. The belief is he’ll provide quality depth and competition for the backup jobs. Then there is Mike Glennon. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup whom the team has decided will be their first attempt at finding a new start in 2017.

What many are dying to know at this point is what will the team do in the draft? Do they still draft a quarterback early or do they wait? There are more than a few who think waiting is the better strategy. It’s possible to find that future starter the team can develop for the future in days two and three. Do the numbers support that though?

Latest Bears Free Agent Pursuit Could Drastically Alter Their Draft Board

Step by step the Chicago Bears are making over their roster. It took some time for things to really get going. The mass panic caused by the relative inaction of opening day of free agency, or rather inability to land big names, eventually subsided. GM Ryan Pace has since operated with a steady, calculated efficiency by knocking out needs with second wave players.

  • Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper at cornerback.
  • John Jenkins at nose tackle.
  • Markus Wheaton and Kendall Wright at wide receiver.

The idea behind this strategy is simple and straightforward. Use reasonably priced veterans to fill out needs and give the team enough flexibility to draft the best player available. Seems the team isn’t done continuing with that process.

The pursuit of Ricky Jean-Francois is hardly surprising. He’s a solid 30-year old veteran with a proven track record. He’s also got connections to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. That familiarity only enhances his status as a desirable player. However, there is something else about this visit that could have a wider meaning.

One that alters the entire scope of the Bears’ draft.

WATCH: Patrick Kane Crashes Canadian TV Show Dressed As Construction Worker

As the Blackhawks are tearing through Canada, so is Patrick Kane with the local media. Though, he didn’t make a normal entrance to the show. “Showtime” is busy entertaining fans on and off the ice these days.

Dressed as a construction worker, Kane can be seen walking through the back of the set. He then makes his way to the desk with talking heads to “fix” their broken set.

It’s hard to tell if everyone is on the skit which makes in even better. Showtime must be working on his acting skills to solidify his nickname even more. At least this was better than his Al Pacino ‘Scarface’ impersonation.

He then goes on to give a regular interview still dressed in his construction gear. You can see the interview following his entrance here, where he mentions that their opponent on Saturday, Toronto Maple Leafs, will be a team to be reckoned with.

Kyle Schwarber Annihilates Baseball For 3-Run Home Run

Kyle Schwarber is going to be the most menacing leadoff hitter in MLB history this season with the Chicago Cubs. Remember Alfonso Soriano and all of his leadoff home runs? Schwarber is going to be even better.

During Friday’s game against the Chicago White Sox, Schwarber not only started in right field, (I love Joe Maddon) but the future gold glover also launched a three-run missile. Yeah, losing Dexter Fowler hurts, but imagine a full year of Schwarber batting leadoff, with Kris Bryant behind him for protection?

Lock it in, 40 home runs for Schwarber in 2017. Hell, 50 might even happen.

So many pretty swings in this Cubs’ lineup. Pitchers are going to be shitting themselves a lot against the Cubs.

Lance Briggs Couldn’t Resist Taking A Playful Shot at Jay Cutler

Seven-time Chicago Bears Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs has made a habit of shocking announcements lately. He just got done declaring he was dealing with CTE symptoms in his brain. A byproduct many football players have to deal with following their careers and something modern medicine is still learning about.

It seems the man wasn’t done dropping bombs. He had another one ready when he went on the Rich Eisen Show, a popular podcast about all things NFL. Briggs is a noted media personality these days, never afraid to speak his mind. Eisen decided to talk with him about the Bears QB situation. Starting, of course with whether he thinks Mike Glennon was a worthwhile investment.

“The thing about Mike Glennon is he’s a guy that if he succeeds, great. If he doesn’t succeed, there’s not going to be a long question about, ‘Okay do we need to hold onto this guy a little bit longer?’ You know, because of his history and his potential. It will be an easier break than it was with #6.”

A fair point that makes plenty of sense. Everything points to that way of thinking for the Bears. They handed Glennon a three-year contract and most of his guaranteed money in 2017. That means if he flops this year they can break away easily in 2018. However, this statement wasn’t the most surprising of the interview. Not by a long shot.

Cubs Barber Sits Down To Chat With Sports Mockery

If you’re like me, you probably spend no more than $20 when you go to get your haircut. I see no problem going to Sport Clips and letting some college kid attempt to cut what’s left of my head of hair partly because I have the luxury of not being in the public eye every second of my life.

Members of the 2016 World Champion Chicago Cubs however, are under public scrutiny from the minute they wake up until the second they go to sleep so they can’t run the risk of walking out in public with a jacked up hair cut.

Cubs players have found a much better option to get their hair cut during Spring Training and his name is Ray Zuniga, better known as Lil’ Ray.

Ray sat down and spoke with me recently about life cutting the World Champion Chicago Cubs.
