Joe Maddon Changes Starting Rotation For Cubs Home Opener

Joe Maddon is trying to get every advantage he can and after having to spend an extra day in St. Louis because of Wednesday’s rain out against the Cardinals. The Chicago Cubs manager decided to switch up his starting rotation. The Cubs host the Los Angeles Dodgers for their home opener on Monday and instead of Jake Arrieta starting, it will be Jon Lester.

Arrieta was scheduled to pitch on Monday, but his start has been pushed up to Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers. As always, Maddon has a good reason for his decision.

Via the Chicago Tribune:

“The off-days always help,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “Without the off-days, we couldn’t have done it. But we’re going it based on handedness.

Milwaukee is predominantly right-handed, and the Dodgers are predominantly left-handed. It was just right in front of us, so we decided to do it.”

(Joe Maddon)

The Dodgers have been awful against left-handed pitching and that included getting shutout by former Cubs’ lefty Clayton Richard on Tuesday. In 2016, the Dodgers hit .214 vs. lefties and .264 against righties.

Lester was great against Los Angeles during last year’s postseason, allowing two earned runs in 13 innings combined during his two starts against the Dodgers. That came after pitching 15 innings of one-run ball against them in two regular-season starts that included a complete-game win at Wrigley Field.

Arrieta will stay on his normal five-day rest, while Lester will go on a week’s rest. New Cubs’ pitcher Brett Anderson, a lefty, will also pitch against the Dodgers next week. John Lackey gets the nod on Wednesday.

The Cubs will raise their World Series banner on Monday and on Wednesday they’ll have a ring ceremony. Lester’s good friend, David Ross will be back on Wednesday to throw out the first pitch and lead the 7th inning stretch.

Multiple Sources Believe This Is Bears First Round End Game for Draft

chicago bears draft

The Chicago Bears draft plans for 2017 have been and will continue to be the hot topic for fans and media for the rest of April. What has people perplexed to this point is not knowing for sure what they have in mind. At least from a roster perspective. Thanks to a series of moves in free agency, GM Ryan Pace has made it where the team doesn’t have a clear cut need they have to address.

That of course was on purpose. He wanted to use the free agent market as a way to plug holes in the roster with affordable veterans. That would allow the Bears to select the absolute best players on the board throughout the draft. It’s a simple and straightforward mode of operation. One Pace has stuck to for his two previous offseasons.

So who will it be then? Who will the Bears eye up for the #3 overall pick in the first round on April 28th? There are plenty of theories but not a lot of hard evidence. Typical for this time of year. However, a number of notable sources have begun to hint that the true desires of the team may rest elsewhere on the board.

Chicago Bears draft plans hinge on mobility

According to Albert Breer of the MMQB, there is a buzz circulating the #2 and #3 picks. Everybody knows the Browns plan to take Myles Garrett first overall. That’s been the case for weeks and maybe months. Only recently has the picture cleared with other spots. It seems the San Francisco 49ers are eyeing Stanford defensive lineman Solomon Thomas with their second overall pick.

This leaves the Bears with their unclear intentions. Breer thinks they have players they like, but not at #3. Thus it’s his belief their primary goal is to move down.

“Word is the Bears like both LSU’s Jamal Adams and Ohio State’s Malik Hooker, who are widely considered two of the best safety prospects to come out of the college ranks in years. The problem? It’s the idea of drafting a safety that high, and whether the impact will meet the price of the third pick in the draft. That would naturally make the Bears another candidate to at least explore trading down.”

That by itself is a fascinating revelation. Then again the popular saying is every team would like to trade down. In truth that isn’t necessarily the case. Nevertheless it does appear like the Bears are in a somewhat precarious spot. Safeties aren’t usually supposed to go that high in a draft and none of the quarterbacks are deemed worthy of the #3 pick. So is this correct? Are they genuinely looking to move down? Breer’s stance was indeed confirmed by local Bears beat writer Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.

“The draft is a fluid process where teams treat their boards like state secrets. The best-case scenario for the Bears – in their minds – is probably to trade the third overall pick. Moving back from No. 3, however, may not be an option in a draft without a consensus top quarterback.”

Pace is no stranger to movement early in the draft. Last year alone he traded up from #11 to #9 in the first round to get Leonard Floyd. Then in the second round he traded down twice before selecting Cody Whitehair. He doesn’t fear moving in either direction. That signals a clear trust in his draft board and the ability of his front office to evaluate players.

If Adams and Hooker are indeed primary targets, then a move down would make sense. Perhaps between the 6-10 range. Of course it’s easy to say that. It’s far more difficult to do it. Finding a team that wants to move up is always the hard part. Who would do it this year? Thus far the only ones that keep coming up are the Jets, Panthers and Browns. Yet even they can’t be considered strong candidates.

Finding the right fit

The Jets need help at quarterback. Chicago would certainly have an interesting offer. Presuming San Francisco took Thomas as predicted, it would mean the #3 pick guarantees a team their choice of whichever QB they wanted. Not a bad selling point. At the same time the Jets wouldn’t have to feel desperate. It’s hard to imagine either the Jaguars at #4 or Titans at #5 taking a quarterback.

The Panthers? Rumors are strong they have eyes for LSU running back Leonard Fournette. Not a surprise. They are a team build around old school football. That means defense and power running. When it click for them in 2015, they went 15-1. Pairing Fournette with Cam Newton on that offense? Yes please.

The Browns are the most equipped team for a move up if they wished. They have the litany of extra picks for it. Since Garrett will be their choice at #1, there is a strong possibility they may wish to jump back up for a quarterback they covet. Of course they sit at #12 with their second pick in the first round. Would the Bears be comfortable dropping back that far? Impossible to know for sure.

One thing is clear. This team can’t hide their desire to get out of what has become a difficult draft slot. In the end they may have to make the pick at #3. Still, don’t count Ryan Pace out. He’s shown multiple times already in his young career that he can swing surprising trades when they’re least expected.

Snapchat Video Shows Reds Prospect Sniffing Cocaine

No one will ever be able to say that Ian Kahaloa does things half assed. The young pitcher was a fifth round pick of the Cincinnati Reds back in the 2015 amateur draft. Hopes were high that given enough time he could work his way up to the big leagues. That plan may have just been torpedoed with one short Snapchat video.

Thanks to a clip on Twitter, the video show Kahaloa appearing to take a significant snort of what looks like cocaine. On it are the words “Party time lets go.”

https://twitter.com/Reds_1fan/status/842993719527653376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fdeadspin.com%2Fajax%2Finset%2Fiframe%3Fid%3Dtwitter-842993719527653376%26autosize%3D1

Drugs and professional sports are nothing new. They’ve been intertwined for decades upon decades. However, with the arrival of social media it has become far more public in recent years. Players are getting caught on video, often due to their own idiotic mistakes. Putting the clips out there to people they foolishly thought they could trust.

Reds development director Jeff Graupe is aware of the situation and understandably “really concerned” over what happened according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. “We’re working to get Ian the help and assistance that we believe he needs to get his long-term future to a more stable place. We’re kind of putting the baseball on the backburner.”

One thing is for sure. Kahaloa needs to get himself clean and somebody need to take away his cell phone priveledges. Clearly the guy suffers from a condition known as lack of common sense. It’s really his own fault this situation has developed.

David Ross Trolling Anthony Rizzo On Twitter Is Pure Comedy

DANCING WITH THE STARS - "Episode 2403" - The 11 remaining celebrities are set to celebrate the allure of Sin City and take a gamble on dancing to some of the city's iconic songs, as Vegas Night comes to "Dancing with the Stars," live, MONDAY, APRIL 3 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Eric McCandless) DAVID ROSS

Now that David Ross has officially retired from the game of baseball, he has taken on the daunting task of dancing with a complete smoke show, Lindsay Arnold, on ABC’s popular TV show, “Dancing With The Stars.”

Surprisingly, Ross actually has a little bit of rhythm. He opened the show dancing to “Go Cubs Go” which had every Cubs fan smiling from ear to ear at the fact they got to see their 39-year-old backup catcher floating around the dance floor like a dancing sprite.

Ross followed up his “Go Cubs Go” performance with a sick cha-cha to the 80’s classic, “Bust A Move.”

I can’t believe I just used the phrase “sick cha-cha.”

However, his latest performance has created quite the buzz on Twitter, specifically from his former teammate Anthony Rizzo. Ross performed some weird, sexual lap dance “Magic Mike” type of thing for his partner Lindsay Arnold which was highlighted by him ripping his shirt off to expose a very fake six-pack.

The weirdness of watching David Ross attempting to be seductive was too much for Rizzo to bear. Rizzo ripped off a series of tweets expressing the horror of watching the grizzled former catcher attempting to give a lapper.

Watching his former teammate try to be seductive was apparently a vision that had the potential to give Rizzo nightmares. Ross put on his trolling shoes and took the opportunity to troll the shit out of Rizzo and his nightmare tweets.

Two nights after Rizzo tweeted that watching Ross dance would give him nightmares, Ross delivered this beautiful tweet.

I’m glad to see that these two are still friends even though Ross has traded his baseball spikes for dancing shoes.

WATCH: Kris Bryant Drills A Chip Shot From Behind Home Plate

Seriously, is there anything this guy CAN’T do?

Apparently, Bryant is getting geared up for this weekend’s Masters tournament by hitting a couple of chip shots from behind home plate. Bryant is an avid golfer and when I interviewed his older brother, Nick, earlier this year, he said Kris is actually a pretty damn good golfer. He was with Kris when he shot an 80 at Shadow Creek Golf Course in their hometown of Las Vegas but he did have one critique of Kris’ golf game.

“He can’t putt.”

After a few cracks at it, KB eventually drilled a 130-foot chip shot into a net right behind second base. Seriously, he’s like the kid in high school that is good at EVERYTHING.

For as pretty as his golf swing is, I think I speak for Cubs fans everywhere when I say — let’s focus on hitting baseballs for the next seven months and THEN you can hit the links.

The Bears Draft Jamal Adams Hype Is About To Skyrocket Because of This

bears draft jamal adams

The Chicago Bears draft Jamal Adams. Those are the words more than a few prominent draft experts can see happening April 28th. They feel the LSU safety is everything the Bears defense hasn’t had for too long. Their ongoing problems at that position stretch back an entire decade and were often a source of very painful defeats.

Adams was viewed as one of the top prospects in the entire draft from the beginning. His versatility and experience alone were exciting. Yet it’s his apparent leadership, instinct and work ethic that is really winning teams over in interviews of late. The only thing that was holding people back from believing he was a top five lock was his athleticism.

Make no mistake Adams is a fine athlete. He’s shown an ability to chase ball carriers down against the run or drop in coverage against tight ends. Still, top five picks must be reserved for players who exhibit “elite” traits. So far during the pre-draft process, Adams hadn’t done that. Then his pro day happened.

Why the Bears draft Jamal Adams prediction just got real

Experts were hoping that Adams would use the NFL scouting combine as his platform to solidify his top standing in the class. While his workout in general was solid, he didn’t exactly blow the roof off the place. The final tally of numbers was good but in the end there wasn’t much physically that stood out. Perhaps none more so than his pedestrian 4.56 time in the 40-yard dash.

Critics soon came out of the woodwork stating that this proved he was a really good prospect but not top five worthy. Well it seems Adams took exception to those remarks. At the LSU pro day he decided to prove them dead wrong when he delivered a blistering 4.33 in the dash.

Though the number is unofficial and likely closer to the 4.4 mark, the fact is it’s still a significant improvement over his combine time. Now teams know for sure that he has some speed to his game. Another critical box checked. Add that to his physicality, his awareness and his leadership? Suddenly this sounds like a player worth taking high in the draft.

The fact he’s a safety, a position that has haunted the Bears for over a decade makes it that much more exciting.

It’s going to happen

There are plenty of reasons to believe the Bears are going to pull the trigger on Adams at #3. For starters their safety position is (still) bad. Adrian Amos, Deon Bush, and Harold Jones-Quartey among others failed to produce enough big plays in 2016. The addition of 32-year old Quintin Demps in free agency does little to settle peoples’ minds about the problem.

Then there is the fact both defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and GM Ryan Pace hold the safety position in high esteem. When Fangio was running the 49ers defense in San Francisco, they drafted Eric Reid in the first round in 2013. He went to LSU. They also signed Pro Bowl free agent Antoine Bethea a year later. Meanwhile in New Orleans, Pace watched the Saints drop a first rounder on Kenny Vacarro in 2013 as well. Then, a year later, they dropped a monster contract on free agent Jairus Byrd.

Throw in the fact that John Fox is a former defensive back himself? These are the exact sort of circumstances that can result in a safety becoming the third overall pick in a draft.

Ready for the final nudge? In NFL draft history, only three safeties have ever been selected in the top three picks. Two of those three went on to become Pro Bowlers. So the odds, limited as they are, most definitely are in the Bears’ favor. Sure the money considerations are a headache but this is about winning. If Jamal Adams can improve the defense that much, then no amount of money should matter.

It can happen and it just might happen barring a sudden change in 23 days.

Will Wrigley Be Ready For The Cubs Home Opener?

With the home opener five days away, there have been whispers that Wrigley Field may not be ready for baseball on April 10th. I mean, this is what it looked like a week ago from today.

Yes, that’s dirt in the outfield.

Immediately following the 2016 postseason, construction crews got back to work on the $550 million, multiyear 1060 Project which was geared at renovating not only Wrigley Field, but the Wrigleyville neighborhood as well.

The major focal point at this point of the construction plan was the addition of an exclusive club called the American Airline 1914 Club. The club will be the first of four and is set to begin service by Opening Day NEXT YEAR and will be located behind home plate. The three other clubs are expected to open by 2020.

The other major aspect of the field that will change is moving both bullpens from down the lines to underneath the bleachers in the outfield. Cubs brass have said that the completion of the bullpens will be ready for the April 10th opener.

If you’re judging based off this picture that was taken four days, it appears the bullpens have fully been moved off the lines.

While the above picture looks like Wrigley is ready to rock and roll, it’s a bit deceiving seeing that the field wasn’t even fully sodded until April 2nd, just three days ago.

Cubs fans minds can rest a little bit better tonight thanks to a new video that was released by WGN-TV. The video lasts a little over a minute and shows a Wrigley Field that should be fully ready by next Monday (bullpens included).

The Bears Were The ONLY Team Not to Attend Pro Day of This Top QB

chicago bears chad kelly

Might as well toss out the Chicago Bears Chad Kelly banners right now. Many fans across social media have quietly hoped for months that their favorite team might at least consider a risky proposition. Namely the idea drafting the Ole Miss quarterback. It’s not surprising. From a purely physical perspective, Kelly might be one of the two or three most gifted throwers in the entire 2017 draft class.

No joke. The guy has delivered some of the most incredible passes seen in college football over the past several years. He can throw it with velocity and can throw it with touch. Just watch this dandy he had against Alabama last year and try not to say wow. Bet that won’t be possible.

Exactly. The point being that when Kelly is hot he can slice up any defense he goes against. Not surprising since he’s the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly. So why isn’t he considered a first round draft choice? Two reasons. First is health. He suffered a gruesome knee injury last season, tearing two ligaments including the ACL. Then there’s the other. He might be just a little bit crazy.

A Chicago Bears Chad Kelly plan? Whole lot of nope

Okay, that might be a bit extreme. However, the young man does suffer from maturity issues. Major maturity issues. Initially he was supposed to attend Clemson but was dimissed in 2013 due to conduct detrimental to the team. In 2014 he was arrested for an altercation outside a nightclub in Buffalo. Last but not least he stormed a high school football field looking for a fight after his brother was given a cheap shot.

Yet in spite of all this people remain confident that if he can just straighten himself out he could end up being the best QB to come out of this draft. Seriously. That’s why 31 teams were at the Ole Miss pro day to watch him. Unfortunately people who hoped Chicago might take a look were disappointed.

A team must have standards

Some will say the Bears not being there had nothing to do with Kelly. In fact that’s wrong. There were no other notable prospects at the pro day they needed to see. Top tight end Evan Engram was at the Senior Bowl, so they’d gotten their full preview of him. Kelly was the main attraction given it was his first throwing session in months and they said no thanks. Maybe they had it right because Kelly had to bow out after just 12 passes due to a tweaked wrist.

In truth the reason for their absence is obvious. Kelly is most likely not even on their draft board. Since Ryan Pace and John Fox took over in 2015, the two men put a much heavier emphasis on player character. They wanted guys who were all about football with clean backgrounds. Down-to-earth, passionate players that work their tails off. Kelly doesn’t even come close to fitting that description.

He’s unpredictable and injury-prone. Sure he can throw the ball well but it takes way more than that to be the face of a franchise. Nice to know the Bears haven’t compromised their standards even in this situation.

WATCH: Javy Baez and Spice Adams Riding In A Car Is The Best Thing You’ll See All Day

Javier Baez recently took a ride around the city of Chicago with former Chicago Bear Anthony “Spice” Adams. Since he retired from the NFL in 2013, Adams has turned into somewhat of an viral sensation due to his numerous videos that he’s created that are absolutely hilarious.

He’s got a ton of videos but this one is by far and away my favorite.

In his segment with Baez called “Ride Along” fueled by BP Sports, Baez and Adams cruised around downtown and Wrigleyville and had a very informal (yet hilarious) conversation that included singing, dogs, and of course — curses.

Check it out.

The swagger Baez brings with him on a daily basis is unparalleled and it’s good to see that even when he’s riding shotgun, the swagger remains.

This Sequence Of Pictures Showing A Cardinals Fan Reaction To Albert Almora Jr.’s Catch Is Gold

The saying goes, defense wins championships, and the Chicago Cubs proved that last year. Well, Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals was another great indication that the Cubs still have spectacular defenders all over the field.

Albert Almora Jr. had the play of the game, robbing a game-tying home run off the bat of Matt Adams in the seventh inning. Adams drove the ball to the deepest part of the ballpark, but given the height of the fly ball, Almora had plenty of time to camp underneath it and make a great leaping catch at the center field wall.

This preserved the 2-1 Cubs lead that ended up being the final score.

The only thing to make that play better was the reaction of a Cardinals fan in the stands.

Complete and utter devastation.

Oh and by the way, Javier Baez ended the game with another Javier Baez play because of course.

Defense wins championships.
