Kris Bryant Addresses Domestic Violence Claim Against Addison Russell

Kris Bryant was on The Bernstein and Goff Show on 670 The Score on Thursday and the Chicago Cubs star third baseman addressed the domestic violence claim against his teammate Addison Russell.

The allegation is being looked into by MLB, after the Cubs informed the league about the claim made over on an Instagram post Wednesday night.

Bryant said it was unfortunate and caught off guard by the story. Here are the first few minutes of his interview on 670 The Score.

Meanwhile, Russell is not in the Cubs lineup for the second consecutive game, as the team starts a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies Thursday night.

MLB To Investigate Domestic Violence Allegation Against Addison Russell

Last night, Sports Mockery broke the news that Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has been accused of cheating on and hitting his wife Melisa. Her Instagram post implied the conclusion of their relationship and some of Russell’s transgressions.

Things just got worse for Russell.

According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, the MLB plans to open an investigation into the allegations. League officials hope to interview both Melisa and her friend, whose gruesome details of the accusations were left for the world to see in a comment on Melisa’s original Instagram post.

Russell has been going through an awful slump to begin the season, and things don’t look to be getting any better for the young star.

More updates to come as news warrants. Stay tuned.

***UPDATE: Bruce Levine of 670 The Score just tweeted that according to his MLB source, the league is “looking into” the allegations against Russell but there is currently no official investigation.

How Bad Timing Prevented The Bears From Keeping The Coach Of The Future

adam gase bears

A lot of fans began dreaming the moment it happened. The Adam Gase Bears head coaching movement. It made so much sense. With John Fox being in his 60s, it was just a matter of time before he’d be walking away from the game. Having Gase as the offensive coordinator made it likely the team had his eventual successor in place.

Sadly this dream never came true. After one productive year at the job, Gase was hired away to become head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Just like that hopes were dashed. Everything they were building had to change with the promotion of Dowell Loggains to fill his spot. Jay Cutler regressed badly after a strong 2015 under Gase’s direction. The team itself went from 5-11 to 3-13.

Meanwhile the man himself wasted no time showcasing his ability to adjust and manage an organization on the fly. After a rough 1-4 start in 2016, the Dolphins rebounded down the stretch to make the playoffs for the first time in eight years. For many in Chicago, it was a real gut punch.

Adam Gase Bears scenario suffered from brutal bad timing

By 2015, Gase was a hot commodity in coaching circles. The young man was renowned for his keen offensive mind. One that reinvigorated the career of Peyton Manning in Denver. One that produced the greatest single offensive season in NFL history. It was actually a surprise that he wasn’t hired as a head coach that year. In fact he came close a couple times before politics got in the way.

The Bears benefited from that sequence of events. Fox brought his protege in as offensive coordinator. However, it was clear to anybody with half a brain that Gase was almost certain to become a head coach the next year. That left Chicago in a bind. The only way they could keep him was by firing Fox and promoting him to head coach themselves. Something that would be hard to justify after just one season.

The future remains foggy

Sure enough GM Ryan Pace chose to stick with Fox. Gase left for Miami and is now considered by many to be the eventual heir apparent in the AFC East to Bill Belichick as NFL.com explained.

According to the team’s assistant head coach Darren Rizzi, who has been with the Dolphins in some fashion since 2010, the new coach-culture combo led to three more wins in 2016.

“I’ve been on, I think, teams that were 7-9 that might’ve had more talent than we had last year,” Rizzi told the Palm Beach Post.

“We had a lot of teams here in my years — I’ve been here eight years — there have been some teams where we had to win at the end of the season where we didn’t,” Rizzi added. “had to win some big games that we didn’t. can probably point to two or three different years. We can sit here and talk about a bunch of different years, and last year we did.”

So while Gase is thriving, his former mentor Fox is fighting for his life. The veteran head coach is up against the wall in 2017. He has eight wins in his first two seasons. Conventional wisdom says if he can’t gain progress this year, he’s likely gone. Pace maintains his public support of Fox, but everything has a breaking point. Odds are if the Bears finish any worse than 6-10 there will be a change. Even that might not be good enough.

Fox is 62-years old. Rumors of his exit have gained steam since the fall of last year of a rift between him and Pace. The hottest one involves the Bears asking him to resign, which he refused. So now he’s sort of a figurehead for this season while the roster continues to shape in the image Pace wants. There’s no proof of such things. Not yet anyway. Still, it’s fair to wonder how different things might be had the Bears hung on to Gase.

Addison Russell Is Being Accused Of Hitting His Wife

What started as Addison Russell being outed as cheater in a social media post shared by his wife Melisa quickly turned ugly when the Chicago Cubs player was accused of not just hitting her but physically abusing her in front of their kids.

Melisa posted the following on Instagram on Wednesday night (which has been deleted).

Several people in the comments then attacked her for being hateful and outing Addison Russell on a social media post. That’s when Melisa’s friend stepped in and dropped a bombshell.

The comments were eventually disabled. It also appears that the friend who made the accusation has deleted her Instagram account. The username @carlierreed is no longer activated.

Melisa added the following on Twitter (which has been deleted).

The Cubs were playing their series finale against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday. No comment has been made by the Cubs nor Addison Russell addressing these allegations at this time.

Addison and Melisa got married in June 2016. The couple has one child together and Addison also has a second child from a previous relationship.

Why Kevin White Was Cursed The Moment The Bears Drafted Him

kevin white bears

Chicago Bears first round wide receivers are cursed. Is that a little over the top? Well maybe that’s because history says it’s warranted. It’s impossible to know what the problem is. For some reason this franchise tends to project a dark cloud over ultra-talented young receivers whenever they take them early in a draft. There is now a growing fear the same is happening to Kevin White.

Before getting into that though, it’s important to illustrate the point. In their franchise history, the Bears have selected five wide receivers in the first round of a draft. The first one came in 1983. Understand that the draft began in 1936. So that gives loud and clear signals of how long it took them to properly value the position. Either that or they felt quality players could be found later on.

One thing is for sure, their misfortune at the position was apparent almost from the start. Here is a quick rundown of each first rounder prior to White and what they accomplished in Chicago.

Willie Gault (18th overall, 1983)

In terms of his impact, Gault was actually a decent pick. He played his role of vertical threat well for five seasons and helped the Bears win Super Bowl XX. Unfortunately he left after 1987 and spent the rest of his career elsewhere.

Wendell Davis (27th overall, 1987)

Davis played five seasons in Chicago and had what amounted to one solid year in 1991 when he put up 945 yards. Aside from that he was a very average receiver. The curse showed its first signs not too long after when he suffered one of the most gruesome injuries in NFL history when he ruptured the patella tendon in both knees during a game in Philadelphia. He retired at 28-years old.

Curtis Conway (7th overall, 1993)

Probably the most successful first round pick the Bears ever made at the position, which isn’t saying much. Conway got off to a slow start through his first two seasons but broke out in 1995 and 1996 with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Then the injuries started. Over his final three seasons with the team he missed 17 total games.

David Terrell (8th overall, 2001)

Probably the most notorious bust in Bears history at the position. Terrell came in with plenty of hype in 2001 as the man who’d help open up a dormant passing game. He flashed a few nice plays as a rookie but was almost a non-factor for most of his four-year run in Chicago. It didn’t help he missed 11 games in 2002 with an injury. He never cracked 700 yards or five touchdowns once in his career.

Sense a running theme? Except for Gault the other three Bears first round receivers were often derailed by frequent injury problems. By now this must be starting to sound familiar to fans given what White has gone through the past two seasons.

Kevin White doesn’t have history on his side

The great irony of Bears history is that their best receivers were all taken outside the first round. Alshon Jeffery and Bobby Engram were second rounders. Marty Booker was a third rounder, Dick Gordon a seventh and Johnny Morris a 12th. Run down the list of top pass catchers in team history and the first round is almost never mentioned.

So here Kevin White sits. The young man has played four of a possible 32 games through the first two years of his NFL career. No one is saying it’s impossible for him to still realize his potential. Anything is possible in the NFL. At the same time the pressure has to be unbearable. Not only is he now up against the draft bust label, which is bad enough. He’s also expected to take on an even greater role with Alshon Jeffery gone.

It’s a rather unique situation. No notable receiver in recent history dating back to 2000 was taken in the first round and suffered multiple setbacks like this. It’s truly uncharted territory. Throw all this curse talk on top of it and it’s not fun being him right now.

The team remains confident and hopeful he’ll get things going in 2017. Word is both legs are healthy. Whether he can get his conditioning right and finally start mastering a complex route system in time to save his career? Only time will tell.

Fred Hoiberg Emerges As Head Coach Candidate For Ohio State

vegas releases nba win projections bulls

Earlier today, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times offered his thoughts on a potential scenario that would see Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg leave Chicago to become the next head coach of the Ohio State men’s basketball team.

Cowley prefaced his column by saying it’s highly unlikely. Hoiberg is still under contract with the Bulls for three more years and $15 million. There’s also been no confirmed contact between Hoiberg and Ohio State’s athletic director Gene Smith.

However, moments ago Gary Parrish of CBS Sports tweeted that an unnamed source told CBS “The Mayor” has emerged as a “real candidate” for the head coaching job for the Buckeyes.

Jon Greenberg of The Athletic confirmed that he’s also been hearing talk of Hoiberg as a candidate from people around Ohio State.

Smith and Hoiberg go way back, to when the former held the athletic director position at Iowa State and the latter was playing for the Cyclones. Earlier this week, Smith fired his men’s head coach Thad Matta.

Cowley referred to the limited connection between Hoiberg and the Ohio State job as “whispers”, so nothing concrete is known at this time.

At their end of season press conference, Gar Forman and John Paxson voiced their support for Hoiberg after another trying season. Despite saying they believe he needs to improve his leadership skills, they confirmed he will return to coach the Bulls again next season.

We’ll keep you up to date with any further developments on this subject, but for now this appears to be a highly unlikely scenario.

New Information Leaked Connecting Elite College Coach To Bears

bears head coach

Anybody with eyes can see that John Fox is coaching for his job in 2017. GM Ryan Pace has said the team is focused on the long-term. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s hard to sell Fox being part of it. Pace himself hasn’t even cracked 40-years old yet. Most of his team is quite young as well. Fox is not. He’s 62-years old and shows no signs of getting things pointed in the right direction. How much longer can they justify him staying Bears head coach?

His first season resulted in a 5-11 record and last year was even worse at 3-13. It’s true that Fox has endured rebuilds in the past, but this might be the most demanding of his career. One that his aging body and mind might not be able to handle. Then there’s the fact that expectations have changed over the past few months.

Now the team is focused on getting the quarterback position fixed. New rookie first round pick Mitch Trubisky looks like he could be a franchise guy. Doing everything possible to make him a success is top priority. This is something Fox has never done in his entire career and may be his downfall.

Next Bears head coach may be coming to town soon

If that’s the case then the next hire certainly should be somebody who knows how to develop a quarterback. One name that nobody expected to make that list was Bob Stoops. The legendary Oklahoma head coach seemed like he was in no danger of losing his job. Then almost out of nowhere he decided to retire.

Aside from the shock of the decision, it also created a new scenario that is sure to gain steam in the months to come. The Chicago Sun-Times alluded to it.

“Bob Stoops has decided to retire as Oklahoma’s football coach after 18 seasons that included the 2000 national championship and 10 Big 12 Conference titles.

Stoops says the time is right to conclude his run in charge of the Sooners. The 56-year-old Stoops is a sure bet for the Hall of Fame.

There is a Chicago connection for Stoops.

Stoops and his wife own two Gold Coast homes; the second, a row house, was purchased in April. While some might try to link that Chicago connection to a potential future Bears job opening — John Fox is under pressure to improve in his third season — it’s possible Stoops is intent on leaving the game for good.”

Now that’s quite the twist. Stoops has a longstanding reputation for producing some top notch offenses during his time at Oklahoma. Last year they ranked third overall in total offense. Since 2004 the Sooners have ranked in the top 10 in that category seven times. During that span he’s produced some excellent running backs including DeMarco Murray and Adrian Peterson. Imagine what he might do for Jordan Howard.

So what about the quarterbacks?

Naturally the question will come to the biggest point. Would Stoops be good for Mitch Trubisky? Well it can be said for certain that the coach has brought a lot of quarterbacks to success at Oklahoma. His biggest was Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman trophy winner and #1 overall pick in the 2010 draft. There was also Landry Jones, selected in the fourth round by Pittsburgh in 2013. Most recently is Baker Mayfield, who has put up some pretty ridiculous numbers the past couple seasons.

This includes 76 touchdown passes in the past two seasons. Watching that highlight reel it’s also apparent that Stoops likes to run an offensive system built out of the shotgun. This would be hugely important given that’s the type of offense Trubisky ran at North Carolina. He’d understand the intricacies and nuances almost immediately.

The Bears also have the sort of quick and fast receiver to fit the system as well with guys like Markus Wheaton, Victor Cruz, and Kendall Wright. Would Stoops consider a move to the NFL after skipping so many opportunities to make the jump in years past? It’s a fair question. He’s not too old by coaching standards but he may just be burnt out. Such things happen when being at the same job for so many years.

Then again a year off may be just what he needs to get the juices flowing again. After all, he wouldn’t be the first hugely successful college football coach to join the NFL late in his career and start winning. Pete Carroll proved it’s very possible. If nothing else this is another intriguing name to watch if and when Fox gets canned next year.

Ulf Samuelsson Named New Blackhawks Assistant Coach

Ulf Samuelsson has been named the assistant coach for the Chicago Blackhawks. He replaces Mike Kitchen who was fired on April 24th.

Samuelsson coached the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, a Carolina Hurricanes affiliate, last season. He has been coaching hockey at various levels since 2003 and served as an NHL assistant twice. First, from 2006-2011 with the Phoenix Coyotes and then from 2013-2016 with the New York Rangers.

Ulf Samuelsson played 16 NHL seasons as a defenseman from 1984-2000. He was a teammate of Joel Quenneville in Harford and won two Stanely Cups in Pittsburgh. In his time with the Hartford Whalers, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers he played in 1,080 games. Samuelsson racked up 332 points on 57 goals and 275 assists.

He will take over the responsibility of defense and special teams. The areas Mike Kitchen previously oversaw and the Blackhawks felt he failed.

Bulls Star Jimmy Butler Makes Change In Representation

bulls star jimmy butler makes change representation

Bulls star Jimmy Butler has new representation, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune’s K.C. Johnson.

Butler played this season without an agent after leaving Happy Walters of Catalyst Sports last summer. His new Toronto-based agent, Bernie Lee, filed paperwork with the National Basketball Players Association to make the new partnership official. Jimmy informed the Bulls management of this change in representation at their exit meeting last week.

Lee’s company (Lee Basketball Services LTD) also represents former Bulls players Mike James and John Lucas III. Lucas played for former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau in Minnesota this season but was waived in January. James will play in Ice Cube’s Big3 tournament this summer. Most of Lee’s other clients are either young unknowns or international players, and Butler will become the biggest name on his client list by far.

Jimmy is still under contract with Chicago for two more seasons before he can exercise a player option in the summer of 2019. If he earns another selection to an All-NBA team in one of the next two seasons, he will qualify for the new designated player exception. That DPE, part of the most recent collective bargaining agreement, would allow Jimmy to sign a five-year max deal with the Bulls worth up to $247 million. Any free agent contract signing with another team could only be for four years and wouldn’t come close to matching that DPE scale.

Assuming the Bulls hear no viable trade offers and keep Butler, he and his new agent Lee will have a big decision to make in two years. The rising star recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show and declared he wants to stay in Chicago. But that sentiment could easily change if the Bulls remain stuck in the middle for two more seasons. If Butler sees no realistic chances of contending for a title by sticking around, he and Lee will take meetings with several interested teams in two short years.

For Butler’s sake, let’s hope Lee is an excellent negotiator. A once-unheralded defensive role player turned himself into a perennial All Star, and he deserves to be paid like one.

Blackhawks Sign Highly Sought After Czech Defenseman Jan Rutta

The Chicago Blackhawks have made their fist move of the offseason to add depth at the blue line. They have signed Czechoslovakian defenseman Jan Rutta to a one year deal.

At 6’3″ and 200 lbs the 26 year old d-man has the size to play a physical game. He also has speed and great passing ability. He proved his worth as a balanced player this past season with Pirati Chomutov of the Czech League.

In 46 regular season games he had 8g and 24a. He continued his success through the postseason as well, while adding 2g and 11a in 17 games.

The highly sought after right-handed shot will be a nice addition to a Blackhawks team loaded with left-handed defenseman. Rutta will have the opportunity to gain great experience while playing with the great veterans on the Blackhawks’ blue line.
