Proof the Chicago Bears Training Staff Has a Hand in Injury Epidemic

chicago bears training staff

The Chicago Bears training staff never gets much attention. That’s just the nature of their jobs. Not being in front of the cameras can make them an afterthought at times. However, their importance to the organization cannot be understated, particularly the head man in charge. That being the strength and conditioning coach. Their job is simple, but it’s far from easy. For those who aren’t sure what exactly they do, here’s a quick definition.

“A strength and conditioning coach is a fitness and physical performance professional who uses exercise prescription specifically, but not limited, to improve the performance of competitive athletes.”

Pretty straightforward, but that belies how difficult the job is in reality. One of the most unheralded parts is injury prevention. Preparation for a physical sport like football is not easy and like head coaching or quarterbacking there are only a select few men and women who can do it with consistent success.

The Bears are finding that out the hard way as their team is once again ravaged by injuries. This is something that has dogged them the past few years and it can be traced back to one key loss on their staff. (continue to next page)

Bob McKenzie Surprised At Blackhawks Early Success And Suggests Caution For One Area

Hockey expert Bob McKenzie takes viewer questions almost every Wednesday night during NBC’s hockey broadcast. This week I was lucky enough to have my Blackhawks questions answered by Bob.

I asked, “Are you surprised by the play of the Blackhawks? Can they keep this up all season?” McKenzie responded that yes he is surprised and people should be cautious of their defense after only four games played.

Neither of the answers surprise me and just reaffirmed what I was already thinking. No one expected the Blackhawks to come out and score ten goals in the first game, or keep up that pace. We have already seen the scoring decrease as well as their shots on goal (44,29, 21, 25).

While their shots on goal have decreased, the opponents have increased theirs significantly (29, 33, 43, 42). I noticed most of the shots have come right in front of the net after looking at shot charts for the last two games. Thankfully the goaltending has been great but we can already see the defense starting to crack. With that, I think there is some upside.

The biggest evidence of their struggles came against the younger and faster Toronto Maple Leafs. Their lack of experience, speed and depth shone through as they were exploited defensively.

Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook have been carrying the load of minutes as expected but we can already see them slowing. The problem is that they’re struggling to find the right fits to compliment them.

Rutta has been the next best defenseman on both ends of the ice. He is a great skater and has shown an ability to defend players in one-on-one situations. In somewhat of a surprise, Rutta has comparable numbers for Corsi, Fenwick and offensive zone starts to Keith and Seabrook. The 27 year old Czech has also contributed a defenseman team high of 4 points.

Gustav Forsling has played well and could be good if the Blackhawks develop his skills. The only fear for a player like him is that he makes a mistake and gets buried at the end of the bench. Such is the case with young players with the Blackhawks players in recent years. He is only 21 and is going to make mistakes. Patience is key.

After that everything gets spotty. Connor Murphy, Niklas Hjalmarsson’s replacement, is last on the Blackhawks for Fenwick, Corsi and offensive zone starts. He is being abused on the ice as a result of his sub par skating ability and was even scratched against Montreal in favor of Cody Franson.

Franson was the last defenseman the Blackhawks picked up in the offseason and it’s apparent why. He doesn’t have the ability to be an everyday player and will be scratched on most nights.

The defense can certainly improve and I think there are a couple guys that can be a good fit alongside Keith and Seabrook. Most notably Rutta and Forsling. They are young and inexperienced but have shown a lot of good signs through the first four games. Based on their minutes, it looks like Coach Q is willing to ride with them.

The same can’t be said for Murphy. No player making $4 million/year should be scratched for an older player making 1/4 of that. We can see he is already in the doghouse with Q and it will be interesting to see how he responds.

Carl Edwards Jr. Guarantees A Cubs Victory Tonight

Chicago Cubs, Carl Edwards Jr., W Flag
Carl Edwards Jr. overcome with joy after helping the Chicago Cubs end their championship drought.

As the Cubs prepare for their winner-take-all Game 5 tonight against the Washington Nationals, at least one member of the teams is feeling confident that the Cubs will advance to the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Check that.

He’s feeling VERY confident.

Carl Edwards Jr. all but guaranteed a Cubs victory tonight as he was being interviewed by reporters following the Cubs Game 4 loss which knotted the NLDS at two. Edwards has had a shaky postseason thus far after posting very solid numbers throughout the regular season. He’s 1-1 with an ERA of 19.29 and was the victim of giving up the game-tying home run to Bryce Harper in Game 2 which breathed life into a seemingly dead Nationals team.

After last night’s 5-0 defeat, Edwards reassured reporters (and Cubs fans) that the team has been in this winner-take-all position before and that the team would be locked in and ready to go.

And just for good measure, he implied this wouldn’t be the last time that reporters would have the chance to talk to him this postseason.

Check it out.

*mic drop*

For the love of God I hope he’s right.

Dowell Loggains Explains Why He Keeps Calling Trubisky Special

former bears scout

Last week Dowell Loggains called Mitch Trubisky “special.” It was a strange departure from his usual way of speaking to the media. He’d praise players from time to time but never went so far as to say they’re special. Trubisky is the first player to earn that honor from the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator. So why is he different from others?

This is a key question that people have wanted answers to, especially after the unfortunate loss to Minnesota where Trubisky threw the game-sealing interception. Loggains seemed totally unaffected by that. The same goes for the rest of his Bears teammates. So again, why? Trubisky is talented for sure but what makes him special?

Loggains was posed that exact question during his press conference following Wednesday practice. His answer provided more clarity into just who the Bears have chosen to be their quarterback of the future. (continue to next page)

Jon Gruden: A Possible John Fox 2018 Replacement

Jon Gruden is a name that has gained some steam in recent weeks regarding the Chicago Bears head coaching job. This isn’t a big surprise. Rumors swirl of his infatuation with rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky. There are also persistent beliefs that he desires to return to coaching despite his constant statements that he’s happy at ESPN working Monday Night Football.

It’s a rather confusing situation. That’s just how it goes for teams that appear on the cusp of a coaching change. Gruden has been part of these rumors for years. So what makes this time any different? A variety of factors including Trubisky, his home life and the fact he’s getting older and time is running out. He’s still a respected football mind around the league and a man only gets so many chances to don the head set before it’s over.

So it’s time to explore. If Gruden makes himself available, what would the Bears be getting?  (continue to next page)

Brian Urlacher Drops Bombshell About Bears Drafting of Trubisky

Brian Urlacher mended fences with the Chicago Bears. He’s as invested as any fan in their success moving forward. That’s why he was excited to see rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky in action for the first time. Urlacher was impressed with him during the preseason and thought he had certain qualities that could make him a success.

Like many others he tuned into Monday Night Football to watch the action. Given the array of quarterbacks he’s faced over the years like Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, it’s safe to say he has a valid opinion worth hearing. Thankfully he was more than encouraged by what he saw as he told Rich Eisen during a call into his podcast show.

That sounds about right. Plenty for him to work on but plenty to be encouraged about. Urlacher spent most of his NFL career in Chicago playing with rough quarterbacks. Who can forget the Dark Ages of Kordell Stewart, Chris Chandler, Craig Krenzel, Jonathan Quinn and Chad Hutchinson? Imagine how he’s feeling now that the Bears have a talent like Trubisky.

It was surrounding that part of the discussion where the future Hall of Famer slipped in a fascinating nugget. (continue to next page)

David Ross Calls Out Stephen Strasburg After Dusty Baker Press Conference Fiasco

Somehow Tuesday’s postponed game between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs turned into one of the most bizarre and funniest stories of the season. Personally my favorite story of the year. Anyway, Dusty Baker said Tanner Roark is going to start Game 4 on Wednesday instead of Stephen Strasburg, who could have gone on normal rest. Baker’s explanation was a debacle, saying Strasburg was feeling under the weather and blaming mold in Chicago for it. However, he also said that Strasburg threw a bullpen on Tuesday and because of that he wasn’t available to start Wednesday.

At the end, it appears like Baker was making shit up to protect Strasburg, who for whatever reason, isn’t ready to start in the most important game of the season for the Nationals. This entire situation was a giant mess for the Nationals and now all the criticism has shifted from Baker to Strasburg.

With Max Scherzer unable to pitch in the first two games of the NLDS against the Cubs because of a hamstring injury, Strasburg was impressive in Game 1 on Friday, pitching a no-hitter through five innings and only allowing three hits in seven innings, striking out 10. He’s been the best pitcher in baseball and when his team needs him the most he’s not taking the ball.

Well, that didn’t sit well for former Cubs catcher and now ESPN baseball analyst David Ross.

Here’s what Ross had to say about Strasburg not making the Game 4 start, as the Cubs are one win away from eliminating the Nationals from the playoffs.

So, instead of Strasburg, Roark will start but the Nationals might have some backup. Scherzer, who pitched on Monday and Gio Gonzalez who started Game 2 on Saturday, appear to be ready to come in for Game 4.

Weird times for the Nationals, who are on the brink of elimination and don’t have their best pitcher starting in an elimination game on normal rest. Meanwhile, the Cubs are still going with Jake Arrieta and it will be his first start since Sept. 26. Arrieta, like Scherzer, also suffered a hamstring injury.

Game 4 will start at 3:08 p.m.

Notorious Cutler Hater Is Already a Mitch Trubisky Fan

charles woodson

Charles Woodson is a future Hall of Fame defensive back and one of the best to ever play. He takes a lot of pride in his profession and has a long history of dislike for quarterbacks. Especially the ones who talk a big game and never deliver. That would explain why he was arguably the biggest critic of former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler during his run in Green Bay.

Woodson personally intercepted Cutler three times in his career. He took a savage delight in calling the quarterback out for his shortcomings. On one Thursday Night game in 2012, the Packers intercepted him four times en route to a 23-10 victory. Cutler had openly challenged Green Bay’s secondary leading up to the game. So afterwards Woodson dropped the hammer.

“We understand that Jay is excited about, you know his new weapons but it’s the same, old Jay. You Don’t need luck. We just need to be in position and Jay will throw us the ball.”

It’s hard to argue that. Cutler has 22 career interceptions against Green Bay. Eight more than the next closest team (Minnesota). Woodson never had any respect for him. So would he level that same scruntiny on the Bears’ new young quarterback? (continue on next page)

Dusty Baker Just Screwed Up Whatever Advantage The Nationals Got For Game 4 Of The NLDS

Game 4 of the NLDS between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs was postponed on Tuesday and moved to 3:08 p.m. on Wednesday. With that change in the schedule, the Nationals received a gift from mother nature, as the rain in Chicago now gives Dusty Baker the option to start Stephen Strasburg in Game 4.

Tanner Roark was scheduled to make the start on Tuesday for Washington, but now Strasburg can start on Wednesday on normal rest after pitching in Game 1 last Friday. In the series-opener against the Cubs, Strasburg allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out 10 hitters. He surrendered two unearned runs and also had a no-hitter through 5.2 innings before back-to-back singles by Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo.

Strasburg was by far more dominant in seven innings than Max Scherzer was in Game 3, when he had a no-hitter through six innings.

Obviously there’s no guarantee the Cubs beat Roark, but there’s a better chance they do than beat Strasburg again.

BUT WAIT! IS THAT DUSTY BAKER’S MUSIC?!?!?!?!

IN DUSTY WE TRUSTY!

Hopefully Strasburg has plenty of time to recover from his illness after the Cubs knock out the Nationals on Wednesday.

Jake Arrieta will start Game 4 for the Cubs.

UPDATE:

We have reached peak Dusty.

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!

Funny thing about him blaming the mold is that Strasburg threw a bullpen on Tuesday to get ready to pitch on Thursday, when the regularly scheduled Game 5 would be, so that’s the actual reason he can’t pitch Wednesday.

Oh, this is so Dusty it hurts.

UPDATE:

The Nationals are saying Dusty misspoke and that Strasburg threw on Monday.

So, I guess he is sticking to blaming the mold. Which is also hilarious.

Young Bulls, Wade, Quell Rumors He Was A Fucking Shmuck… Maybe

When Dwyane Wade was signed by the Bulls prior to the 2016-17 season it was supposed to be a jovial homecoming. Wade, in the twilight of his career, was signed to mentor young Bulls like Jimmy Butler, Bobby Portis, and Doug McDermott whilst helping to usher in a new era sans the baggage of Derrick Rose. And also, if we’re being honest, he was signed to keep people in the seats.

Fast forward to the present and that’s nooooottt exactly what happened.

Butler is gone.

McDermott is gone.

Let’s just go ahead and say what transpired was the antithesis of the original plan. A plan so mired in failure, news of civil unrest and turmoil was leaking from the Bulls locker room quicker than you can say “fuck GarPax.”

A few months after the trade that sent him to Minnesota, Jimmy Butler had this to say of said allegations–

“Hell, probably some of them can’t stand or don’t like me. That’s fine,” Butler said, per the Chicago Sun-Times‘ Joe Cowley. “I’m still waking up fortunate and blessed every day, just like Dwyane is. He still has a fabulous family and a lot more important things to worry about than the opinions of others. But if they dislike him because the guy wants to win, well, then that team has some serious problems on the way.”

Needless to say, all signs pointed to an awkward exit via buyout for Wade– and that’s exactly what happened. Or so we thought…

Now Bulls players and Wade himself have seemingly flipped the script on that narrative as Dwyane Wade himself told K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune that he would reach out to some of his former teammates this season to offer “support and advice.”

Ummmmm, k? Come on Dwyane, you already wasted everyone’s time wearing red. Just move on in wine and gold. Ride off into the sunset clutching LeBron’s nutsack and be gone with you.

Could it be Wade is just low-key trolling? Considering the Bulls are a division rival, I’m not sold this is an act of selflessness. I’m leaning more toward this being a downright mockery of his hometown team.

Evidently, Wade lived on an island during his riveting lone year home; why care now? However, perhaps his intentions are good. I mean… not like the Bulls pose any sort of threat anyways, right?

At any rate, the words of Bobby Portis don’t seem all that convincing. So you be the judge.

“We talked. Everything is cool,” Bulls forward Bobby Portis told Johnson. “It wasn’t like we didn’t like him or anything. It was just we had our troubles during the season.”

Mhmmmmm…

Obviously satire. But in satire there is truth. (Photo credit: the Kicker)
