Cubs Lose Stupid Game Playing Stupid Baseball

There are days like today when you can the most rational fan of a team, a good team which the Chicago Cubs are, but you’ll still want to kill someone after four torturous hours of watching baseball.

I mean, it looked good early. The offense that hadn’t scored more than three runs in nine straight games scored four runs in the second inning. But then Tyler Chatwood walked two guys in a row, hit a third batter, and the defense made back-to-back mistakes to give away the lead.

Even then though, the Cubs grabbed the lead right back. Javier Baez hit a home run to make it 5-4 and then Anthony Rizzo hit one too giving the Cubs a 6-4 lead. The bullpen was great again, as Mike Montgomery, Pedro Strop and Carl Edwards Jr. shut down the Cardinals for four innings.

We probably should have known that once the Cubs couldn’t score after Kris Bryant hit a leadoff double in the ninth that they were going to lose. Brandon Morrow hadn’t allowed a run all season, so of course he walked the first man up in the bottom of the ninth and eventually gave up a game-tying two-run double.

But again, the Cubs had another shot. After a one-out single by Jason Heyward in the 10th inning, he moved up to second on a Javier Baez strikeout. Heyward then got to third base after a wild pitch.

Victor Caratini smoked a line drive, but of course Matt Carpenter made the catch a few feet off the third base line.

Following a walk to start the bottom of the 10th, we pretty much knew what the result was going to be.

The Cubs have lost four in a row and this was by far the worst loss of the year.

VIDEO: Kris Bryant Fouled A 102mph Fastball Off Yadier Molina’s Balls

Being a catcher is absolutely the worst. Hats off to all of you trying to make a career in baseball playing behind the plate. Nothing but respect because I don’t even want to imagine what Yadier Molina felt and probably is still feeling after Kris Bryant fouled off a 102mph fastball off his balls.

Obviously Molina left the game after this.

The slow motion replay will give you pain.

VIDEO: White Sox Pitcher Miguel Gonzalez Belting Out “Volver, Volver” With A Mariachi Band Is Awesome

When you have a mariachi band why not use it to sound like an absolute boss. Chicago White Sox pitcher Miguel Gonzalez belted out a great rendition of a Mexican classic, “Volver, Volver” by the legend Vicente Fernandez.

This was awesome.

And there’s more!

Another classic. Miguel Gonzalez is my new favorite White Sox player.

Miguel setting up his next career move.

VIDEO: Kyle Schwarber Trips Over Himself, Recovers To Make Catch

I mean, I don’t know what else to say. At least Kyle Schwarber made the catch.

Schwarber tripped over himself and made a routine play turn into another adventure.

It’s been an adventure for Schwarber out in left field today.

Tyler Chatwood And The Cubs Defense Shitting The Bed In St. Louis

The Tyler Chatwood experience so far with the Chicago Cubs has been, what’s the word, erratic to say the least. Well actually, Chatwood walking everyone has been really consistent and so has the Cubs awful defense this past week. Both things continued Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Right from the start, Chatwood walked the first two batters. Yet, as he’s been able to do so far this year Chatwood worked around the trouble and gave up no runs. The Cubs offense then gave him a four-run in the second only to piss it away in the fourth.

Again, Chatwood walked the first two in the fourth inning and then hit the third batter to load the bases with no outs. A sac-fly was hit to center field, as Jason Heyward made a sliding catch. But of course the defense just couldn’t get through a game without an error.

Anthony Rizzo fielded a ground ball and instead of taking the easy out at first he threw over to second base, where Addison Russell dropped the ball. Just flat out dropped it. Somehow Rizzo was charged with the error, but who cares who it was on, catch the damn ball.

But Kyle Schwarber really fucked things up by doing this.

That let the Cardinals tie the game at four.

Chatwood came out for the fifth inning and walked Yadier Molina and was then taken out. He’s now walked at least five guys in four of his six starts. He entered the game with a 2.83 ERA, but the walks finally caught up to him. Obviously the defense didn’t help either.

White Sox Place Yoan Moncada On DL, Call Up Jose Rondon From Triple-A

Throughout the past week, White Sox second baseman Yoan Moncada has been dealing with a variety of nagging injuries. The most serious one is involving his hamstring. After sitting out Thursday’s contest against the Twins, Moncada attempted to play in last nights game, only to be pulled later on.

It seems the White Sox are finally going to give him the time he needs to heal fully by placing him on the 10-day DL. As a corresponding roster move, the team has called up infielder Jose Rondon from Triple-A Charlotte. The 22 year old has had a very solid season for the Knights up to this point, hitting .286 with a .349 OBP.

Putting Moncada on the DL was absolutely the right move. It is better to get him fully healthy opposed to having him risk a more significant injury later on. Be thankful it’s just a 10-day stint as opposed to a 60-day one. Furthermore, Rondon will be able to showcase some of his talent and see what he can bring to the table.

It sucks that Moncada has to miss time right when he was finally clicking at a high level, but at the end of the day, this is the correct decision. Let’s hope he can bounce back in a week and a half and continue punishing baseballs on a regular basis.

VIDEO: Yadier Molina Strikes Out, Flings Bat At Cubs Pitcher Tyler Chatwood

When Yadier Molina isn’t trying to fight opposing managers, or getting in the face of umpires or being the classiest catcher in front of the best fans in baseball he’s throwing bats at pitchers.

After striking out to end the third inning during Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, Molina lost control of his bat that ended up flying past Tyler Chatwood on the mound.

You’d think Molina would have plenty of pine tar to never lose control that badly.

Bears Better Watch Out For These New Rival Players

We are now over a week removed from the end of the 2018 NFL Draft and the dust is starting to settle. Draft grades are being handed out left and right and the Bears are being praised for their selections.

But what about the other teams that the Bears have to face multiple times a year? What did the Lions, Vikings and Packers do that could impact the Bears each time they play next season and into the future? If you didn’t have time to pay attention to all seven rounds of the draft, we’ve got you covered by taking a look at the players who could be the biggest threat to the Bears.

Lions

Matt Patricia, new head coach of the Lions, has already put his mark on this franchise. In New England, they constantly put their focus on the offensive and defensive lines. Patricia brought that mentality over into this draft, as they selected two offensive lineman and a defensive end, building on already solid foundations. But that’s not the area that the biggest threat comes into play.

The biggest threat to the Bears comes to them in the form of a 6’0, 212 lbs. running back named Kerryon Johnson.

He’s a well-rounded running back who can step in and take pressure off of Matthew Stafford immediately. It’s been well documented that Detroit hasn’t had a decent running game in years, allowing the Bears to pay closer attention to stopping Stafford than worrying about the running backs in the past.

Now, Johnson can step in and force the Bears to pay closer attention to the run game. The Lions traded up in the second round to grab Johnson too, which means that they’ll be looking to utilize him heavily in their new offense.

Vikings

The Vikings already have an insanely talented defense. Adding in players like Sheldon Richardson on the defensive line didn’t help the Bears, and their efforts to compete with the Vikings, either.

Minnesota continued building onto an already impressive secondary with adding the biggest threat to the Bears; Mike Hughes.

The Vikings selected Hughes, a player the Bears were linked to, at the end of the first round of this year’s draft. Hughes is a relentless cover corner, who looks to press at the line of scrimmage and completely knock the receiver off of their route.

If he didn’t have any off the field issues, Hughes would have likely been selected much higher. But the Vikings felt comfortable adding him to a secondary that already consists of players like Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes, Harrison Smith and Terrance Newman. With the moves the Bears made in the off-season, adding offensive weapons, we’re seeing these division rivals counter-act by bulking up their secondaries.

Packers

Green Bay struggled last year, with the injury to Aaron Rodgers, but otherwise they’re a perennial playoff team. This is mostly due to the play of Rodgers, who covers up the deficiencies on their roster year after year.

However, with a new GM in town, the Packers seem determined to rectify their previous mistakes and address their needs in big ways. Muhammed Wilkerson, a stout defensive lineman, signed a one year deal with them in free agency and they also signed Jimmy Graham to give Rodgers another weapon.

The biggest threat to the Bears from the draft actually comes to them in two selections. The Packers selected CB Jaire Alexander in the 1st round and CB Josh Jackson in the 2nd round to address the holes they had in their secondary.

Alexander is a feisty corner who plays much larger than his 5’10” frame would suggest. He’s most likely to cover the slot in GB and track speedy guys like Taylor Gabriel and Anthony Miller when the Bears and Packers face off.

Jackson is a ballhawking corner who has the size to match up against Allen Robinson all day long. The Packers were shocked that he fell to them in the second round and had no issue handing in their card to select him. Jackson picked off eight passes last year at Iowa and will most assuredly be looking to match that number, or higher, in the NFL next season.

Green Bay now has a secondary consisting of Kevin King, Josh Jones, Jaire Alexander, Josh Jackson and Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix. Just as the Vikings did, the Packers are stocking up their secondary in reaction to the Bears offensive additions.

The Bears arguably had one of the best off-seasons in the NFL, but the teams in the black-and-blue NFC North division also got better.

These battles are going to be entertaining as hell to watch next season…is it September yet?

How the Bears Have Fared Drafting From Each School of 2018 Class

chicago bears

One of the somewhat overlooked aspects of the NFL draft is how certain schools are strongly connected to certain teams. It’s no different for the Chicago Bears. History shows they’ve had much stronger ties to one program versus another. For example, no college has sent more players to Chicago via the draft than Notre Dame at 41 prospects dating back to 1939.

In that time they’ve had some moderate success, landing a couple stud like safety Dave Duerson and quarterback Johnny Lujack. That begs a more interesting question. What about the schools they drafted from this year? Have they had success with any of them in the past or could it actually be a first-time experience for one or two of them?

Fans may be surprised by some of the information that was uncovered.

Georgia (Roquan Smith and Javon Wims)

Though the Bears have drafted extensively out of Georgia dating all the way back to 1940, now sitting at 20 players, they’ve still yet to score a major hit. Their biggest success to date is longtime kicker and member of the 1985 Bears, Kevin Butler. Then again it shouldn’t be a surprise they’ve had so little success. Of the 20 picks made from that school, only six of them came in the fourth round or high. Here’s hoping Leonard Floyd and Roquan Smith can move the needle a little bit.

Iowa (James Daniels)

Incredibly, Daniels is the first player the Bears have selected out of Iowa since 1990 when they grabbed Bill Anderson in the seventh round. Even more amazing is that with Daniels as their 13th pick from that school all-time, seven have been offensive linemen. The good news is they’ve enjoyed some good fortune from that school. Mark Bortz, two-time Pro Bowler, and 1985 Bears alum was an eighth rounder for them in 1983. Yet their best get from that college, ironically, was Jay Hilgenberg who they signed as an undrafted free agent. He went to seven Pro Bowls.

Memphis (Anthony Miller)

Needless to say, the history isn’t nearly as extensive for the Bears at Memphis. Not in football anyway. The Bulls have a greater legacy there than them. The highest pick they ever made prior to Miller was a third round running back in 1974 named Cliff Taylor. He ran for a grand total of 65 yards. Their most successful pick was Rich Coady, an 11th round center in 1968 who started four years for them.

Western Kentucky (Joel Iyiegbuniwe)

Only once before did the Bears make a draft pick out of Western Kentucky before the arrival of Iyiegbuniwe. That was Virgil Livers way back in 1975, also a fourth rounder. He proved to be a nice little find for them. He managed over 1,000 return yards as a rookie and then became a productive starter on defense at cornerback with 12 interceptions in five years. He helped them reach the playoffs in 1977 and 1979.

Delaware (Bilal Nichols)

Another school that’s not exactly a hotbed of activity for the Bears. Nichols is just the fourth ever player they’ve taken out of Delaware and also, as a fifth rounder, the highest to date. Before that, it was wide receiver Jamin Elliot in the sixth round back in 2002. He appeared in three games for the team but never made a catch. Nichols has a chance to become the first ever player out of Delaware who actually makes it onto the field in a Bears uniform.

Utah (Kylie Fitts)

Get ready for a genuine shock. Kylie Fitts is the first player out of Utah that the Bears have drafted since….wait for it….1958. Yep, it’s been 60 years since Chicago saw a player join the roster out of that school via the draft. Unbelievable considering 47 players have come out of that programs since 2000 alone. That pick was also the most notable in fullback Merrill Douglass. He was a backup behind star Rick Casares during that time, though he helped the team win the NFL championship in 1963.

Here’s Another Thing Pissing Off Cubs Fans

Normally when I’m on here writing about the Chicago Cubs defense it’s because someone’s made an awesome play. That’s all great, but the defense has been garbage recently and that makes the offensive struggles that much more frustrating.

The Cubs offense has scored fewer than four runs nine games in a row, the longest such streak since the 2006 Cubs, who did it for 11 straight games. Well, the defense has been pissing off Cubs fans too.

We all love Javier Baez. Dude is a wizard out there, with the fastest hands anyone has ever seen. However, there’s no denying that while he still makes the great play there are also times when the routine play or a slightly tougher play is botched.

On Friday night, Baez’s error to begin the second inning led to the only runs scored by the St. Louis Cardinals. All of them were unearned, as Tommy Pham’s three-run homer off Jose Quintana came with two outs.

Those three unearned runs make it nine unearned runs in the past seven games for the Cubs.

Completely unacceptable. And this isn’t to pile on Baez either, as Kris Bryant’s decision-making at third base hasn’t been great either the last couple games.

After Baez’s error last night, Jedd Gyorko chopped a ball down the third base line and while Bryant’s throw to first base was in time, Anthony Rizzo couldn’t keep his toe on the bag. Gyorko was safe, but Bryant could have easily let the ball roll into foul territory. He didn’t.

There was also a play during the series-finale against the Colorado Rockies when Bryant either couldn’t get a grip of the ball, or simply made the wrong decision to not throw to home when the Cubs were already trailing.

That game was a complete mess all around.

It’s tough to say make a damn play when several players have been making plays on defense, including Kyle Schwarber saving a run last night, but make a damn play!

Anyway, the defense just has to get better overall. One of the main reasons the Cubs were so great in 2016 was because of their defense.

Also, it would help if Addison Russell could actually hit consistently so he could start every day at shortstop. He’s simply better there than Baez and him and Baez up the middle is the best duo the Cubs can trot out.

Both are in the lineup Saturday.

Tyler Chatwood pitching, so expect a lot of ground balls. How about ending the awful offensive and defensive streaks today.
