VIDEO: Cubs Turn Strange-Looking 4-6-3 Double Play

Things are going so great for Javier Baez right now that even when he boots a ball on defense it turns into a good play. That’s what happened Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

A hard-hit ball was hit directly at Baez at second, who had the ball bounce off his body. Yet, the ball went right to Addison Russell, who was at the bag and was able to finish off the strange-looking 4-6-3 double play.

Just another trick from El Mago.

Chicago Bears With the Hottest Seats Going into Camp

chicago bears

It’s impossible to make everybody happy when there’s so much change to a team in an offseason. Sure a lot of guys are thrilled with the changes GM Ryan Pace made. Mitch Trubisky, Tarik Cohen, and Vic Fangio are just some of them. However, there are also several men who likely had to hide a growing lump in their throats as each success signing and draft pick was made.

It was a clear signal in their minds that their jobs were genuinely on the line for the first time. People wonder why there are holdouts all the time in the NFL? It’s because there’s nothing an athlete fears more than the lingering possibility of losing their job. That is why they constantly have to work so hard. Getting a job is easy. Keeping it is so much harder.

This is the reality several names across the Bears roster are facing. With training camp looming, who are those who find themselves on the hottest seat? Here are the ones to watch as practices begin.

Kevin White (WR)

Everybody knows this by now. Kevin White is a former 7th overall pick. He was expected to take over for Brandon Marshall as the #1 guy in the passing game. Three seasons and just five total games played later, faith in his has eroded to dangerous levels. The team can’t trust his health anymore, hence the massive spending spree at wide receiver since March.

The good news? White has been healthy for months. Signs in minicamps reveals he’s regained much of his trademark speed. His tireless hard work continues. It’s impossible to know how much action he’ll see in the offense this year, but the Bears are willing to give him one last opportunity. It’s simple. If he fails, he’s gone.

Adam Shaheen (TE)

One man who is probably not happy about the offseason decisions to this point is Shaheen. The former second round pick showed signs of progress towards the end of 2017 but it was clear he still had work to do. Initially, people were excited for him when Matt Nagy was hired as head coach after what happened with Travis Kelce in Kansas City.

All that changed when the Bears signed Trey Burton in free agency. The buzz made it clear their plans for him will be to play that Kelce role in the offense. So where does that leave Shaheen? Twisting in the wind it seems. Perception would indicate the new staff isn’t as high on him as the previous one was. That’s why this camp may be make-or-break for him.

Bobby Massie (RT)

Anytime you’re the worst starter in a group position, it’s not going to reflect well. The Bears had a good offensive line last season but every group has a weak link. That was Bobby Massie. The big right tackle isn’t exactly terrible but he’s average as a blocker at best. His pass protection okay while his run blocking was not ideal.

The fact the Bears are switching to a more aggressive scheme that demands athletic linemen doesn’t bode well for him. Size and power were supposed to be his strengths. He’s safe for the time being but unless he turns in a rebound season, the odds are he’ll be the first one they try to replace next offseason.

Bryce Callahan (CB)

The Bears brought Callahan back on a one-year deal. He’s expected to maintain his spot as the starting nickel corner for them. It’s a position they’ve hoped he can lock down long-term. The problem is he’s suffered a series of nagging injuries that keeps forcing him to miss time. It’s proven quite frustrating for all parties.

It seems the team wants to give him one last chance to finally put those issues behind him. If he can they’re likely to hand him a multi-year extension. However, if the health problems persist then they will seek out solutions elsewhere. The Bears did add a lot of depth at corner via undrafted free agency, the same avenue Callahan came from. If he did it, so can they.

Danny Trevathan (ILB)

Don’t be fooled. Trevathan may look like he’s firmly entrenched as the starting inside linebacker, but his credibility is hardly so solid. While he’s a good player, it must be remembered. First, he’s got a difficult history when it comes to staying healthy and has been the case since he signed with the team back in 2016.

One must also not overlook that he’s a John Fox guy. That’s not as big a deal, but it’s still a factor. Trevathan has to show he’s put the health problems behind him and is ready to lead this defense. Otherwise, the team may decide to look beyond him next year and hand the reigns over to first round pick Roquan Smith.

Pat O’Donnell (P)

People have tried to defend Pat O’Donnell since his numbers improved last year after a number of mediocre seasons. The reality is he was still average for the most part, not posting great stats in the most meaningful categories. He did just enough to warrant a one-year deal to return and see if the improvement will continue.

If it’s more of the same, don’t be surprised if new special teams coordinator Chris Tabor starts looking for a replacement. He’s proven adept at finding good punters in the past. Finding an upgrade for O’Donnell will not be the biggest challenge he’s faced.

Javier Baez Continues To Strengthen His MVP Case

Javier Baez is making a serious case to be in MVP talks and he strengthened that case Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

There are several factors that go into voting, but Baez is doing his best to make a valid argument as to why he should be considered. No, Baez doesn’t have a high OBP, but everything else he does great. From hitting for power, to running the bases and playing great defense.

That includes making highlight reel plays and of course being the best tagger in baseball. During Sunday’s game against the Padres Baez flashed his quick hands once again.

Obviously you can’t not mention the awesome throw by fellow All-Star starter Willson Contreras, who is also having another good season, while making amazing plays on defense too.

The highlight reel plays aren’t the only things Baez is good at. He also got the Cubs on the scoreboard in the first, with an RBI-single. Baez now leads the entire National League with 72 RBIs.

And the thing is, Baez gets even better in the second half of the season. Last year Baez slashed .291/.340/.511, with 13 home runs in 227 at-bats following the all-star break.

So, just have to keep accumulating the counting stats for Baez to have a serious case for MVP, but being El Mago on the field definitely helps getting more attention too.

All-Stars Javier Baez and Willson Contreras Hold The Keys To The ‘New’ MLB

Cubs’ fans knew that their team would be well represented at the All-Star Game this year but the question continued to remain as to who would be selected. It is a yearly prediction that Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, and Jon Lester would make the mid-summer classic, but it was only Lester out of that group of three this year. The other two, are Javier Baez and Willson Contreras as you all know by now, and as the game is just two days away, as a baseball fan, please take a minute to understand the importance of their selection and what it means for the Cubs and the future of the MLB.

The selection of these two players is the direct result of the fan vote portion of All-Star voting and MLB needs to take notice. Cubs fans chose two first time All-Stars to represent their team in DC, not too mention, two of the most exciting players in baseball that have ushered in a new style of play that is winning fans over left and right. While Baez and Contreras were showcased in the 2016 World Series run, they are now two years older, better, and creating highlight reel plays night in and night out.

But the one other note about these two Cubs is that if you asked an old-school baseball purist to react to their selection, he or she would not have allowed them into the All-Star Game, because they “Don’t Play The Game The Right Way.”

Well baseball fans, this style of young, unorthodox, spectacular, over-confident, sensational, and exciting play is exactly the direction the MLB is going. Contreras and Baez are offering a sneak peak on the world’s stage into what baseball is going to become, and the way it will be ‘supposed’ to be played over the next decade.

Fans know what they want and the baseball world needs to catch up to this updated version of baseball. Gone are the days of stuffy un-written rules and the idea of acting like you’ve been there before. What is now popular is the can’t-miss, braggadocios brand of baseball that is here to stay.

Baez and Contreras are just two examples of a changing landscape that will be on display Tuesday night that the MLB needs to embrace as the future of their game.

The Younger The Game, The Quicker Path To Fame

The biggest stand out fact about Baez and Contreras is that they are 25 and 26 years old respectively, with Baez making his MLB debut at 21 years old, Contreras at 23. These exciting players were showcased at a young age to fans, immediately gained a following with their electric style of play, and have become fixtures for the Cubs organization. If this were 10-15 years ago, these two would have had to ‘wait their turn’ in the minors, maybe making their debut now at 25 and 26, as baseball’s unwritten rules would have forbid any players from reaching the ‘Big League Club’ before 25 years old.

But these two players won fans hearts the second they hit the field, and proved their presence with their All-Star selections this season. The fans want to see these players and the earlier they see them, the easier they are to connect to and follow, especially for a younger generation of fans.

It is no secret that MLB has a problem attracting younger generations to the game. While a whole article could be written on that topic alone, I’ll stick to the task at hand. But with that difficulty, it is imperative to put these young and exciting players in front of the most eyeballs as soon and as much as possible.

The highlights and gifs of Baez and Contreras are endless and must-see on Twitter and Instagram, and the MLB has to realize that these players are in fact positive for the growth of their game, even if they don’t play by the old rules.

There is a reason why 21- year old phenoms are all over social media for the NBA and now are currently on every platform showcased in the NBA Summer League. This exciting brand sells and is attractive to growing the sport, no matter if older fans yearn for a league without three-pointers and extremely short shorts.

The fact that these two get to represent one of the most storied and traditional franchises in all of baseball says something about what the fans want for the future of the game. And that is exciting.

Goodbye Unwritten Rules

One of the biggest “controversies” this season was the beef between Pirates’ Manager Clint Hurdle and Javier Baez and Willson Contreras. Hurdle, from the old-school of managerial thought, was upset with Baez after he flipped his bat after a popping out after 4 home runs in the series.

In the Pittsburgh Post Gazette on April 12th, Hurdle said, “You watch their kid flip that bat last night? Where’s the respect for the game?” Hurdle said. “The guy hits four homers in two days, so that means you can take your bat and throw it 15, 20 feet in the air when you pop up like you should have hit your fifth home run? I would bet that men over there talked to him because I do believe they have a group over there that speaks truth to power.”

While this was a case of flipping a bat after an out vs a towering home run, the meaning is the same. It’s showcasing raw emotion in the moment, that Hurdle wants no part of. Hurdle was also upset with Contreras when he was arguing balls and strikes with the umpire, and questioned his respect for the game as well.

The mere fact that Baez and Contreras made the All-Star Games proves Hurdle wrong in how he perceives the MLB. Maybe that is also why he continues to struggle in Pittsburgh, and why Cardinals’ Manager Mike Matheny was fired yesterday after an incredibly rough first half of the season.

Managers in MLB fans like Hurdle and Matheny are living in the past that is simply non-existent anymore. If you asked many younger MLB fans, the bat-flip after a home run is not a sign of disrespect, but an awesome acknowledgment of completely destroying a baseball over the outfield wall. And if it is after an out, its simply an outlet for frustration. It is just like the raw emotion felt hitting that game-winning home run, or picking off a runner at second base; the scenarios are endless. The raw emotion in the game is what makes it great, entertaining and attractive. The days of shaking your third base coach’s hand when you circled the bases after you won the pennant are over. Pure ecstasy has taken its place.

________________________________________________________________________

Baez and Contreras embody that raw talent and raw emotion when they play the game, and that is why their style works and is why they are marketable and tremendous ambassadors for the Cubs. These guys can walk the walk and talk the talk and are taking the MLB to new heights.

While some fans critique the MLB for allowing fans to vote, the fans actually got it right this time. Cubs’ fans showed what kind of baseball they want to watch, and want to have displayed on the national stage. It is now up to MLB to continue to listen to the fans as they continue to shape the future of the league. These two stars are what baseball fans are hungry for, and there will be plenty more like Baez and Contreras as the league continues to understand the untapped popularity growth they now have, with exceptional young players re-shaping America’s Pastime.

Brewers Free Fall Continues, Pirates Comeback Twice In 9th And 10th Inning To Sweep 5-Game Series

The Chicago Cubs are going to be in first place at the all-star break and that’s thanks to some help from the Pittsburgh Pirates, who swept a five-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The sweep was capped off in the most heart-breaking fashion for the Brewers, who were trying to salvage the series finale Sunday. They had a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Pirates got a run and then really turned on the pressure in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Brewers’ closer Corey Knebel just didn’t have it, yet he almost escaped. The Pirates loaded the bases with no outs, trailing 5-3. Milwaukee got a double play and with the score at 5-4 with two outs David Freese tied the game with a triple.

So close to a walk-off home run, but just wait, the heart break was still coming.

The Brewers were able to grab the lead in the 10th at 6-5, and once again were one out away from winning the game.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th and runners at the corners, the Pirates walked off against the Brewers.

Incredible because even after the game-tying run scored the Brewers had Colin Moran out by 20 feet at home, but Milwaukee’s catcher Erik Kratz had the ball go right through his legs.

With the five-game sweep, the Brewers head into the break on a six-game losing streak, while going 2-8 in their last 10 games.

How the 2018 Schedule Could Feed a Mitch Trubisky Breakout

mitch trubisky

Lately the focus on how Mitch Trubisky will be able to take that critical next step is on the Chicago Bears team itself. Matt Nagy was hired to be the head coach after a strong run as offensive coordinator in Kansas City. He brought in former Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich, offensive line savant Harry Hiestand and longtime specialist Brad Childress to help install a system that can turn Trubisky into an efficient pro.

It didn’t stop there though. GM Ryan Pace turned his attention to the roster next. In a span of mere months Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Javon Wims, Bennie Fowler and Marlon Brown were all added to the wide receiving corps. Trey Burton came in as a boost to the tight end position. James Daniels plugged up a gap in their interior offensive line.

Together with Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen in the backfield, the list of weapons available to Trubisky has doubled or even tripled in size. This is why optimism is higher than ever for him to break out. However, there is another reason that may be getting overlooked. That being the depleted state of several of the pass defenses he’s set to face this season.

When examining the upcoming schedule, not only do the Bears face a series of teams that struggled against the pass last year. A number of them actually look like they’ve gotten worse since then.

Green Bay Packers (23rd)
  • Will likely rely on multiple rookie starting corners
  • Fired able coordinator Dom Capers
Seattle Seahawks (6th)
  • Traded Michael Bennett to Philadelphia
  • Lost Sheldon Richardson to free agency
  • Cut Richard Sherman
  • May lose Kam Chancellor to retirement
  • Fired defensive coordinator Kris Richard
Arizona Cardinals (14th)
  • Released Tyrann Mathieu
  • Made no notable addition in free agency or draft
  • Switching from 3-4 scheme to 4-3
Tampa Bay Buccaneer (32nd)
Miami Dolphins (16th)
  • Released Ndamukong Suh
  • Cameron Wake turned 36
New England Patriots (30th)
  • Lost defensive coordinator Matt Patricia
New York Jets (21st)
  • Released Muhammad Wilkerson
Buffalo Bills (20th)
  • Finished near the league bottom in sacks
  • Relying heavily on older players
Detroit Lions (27th)
  • Just lost coordinator Teryl Austin
  • Made no significant additions this offseason
New York Giants (31st)
  • Traded Jason Pierre-Paul
  • Eli Apple regressed badly last year
  • Janoris Jenkins has serious off-the-field issues
  • Switching from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4
San Francisco 49ers (22nd)
  • Only notable change is adding 30-year old Richard Sherman to the roster

Now to be fair there’s a chance that some of these defenses will improve but there’s also a good chance they could get even worse based on the facts provided. Throw in the fact that Trubisky saw his arsenal of weapons upgraded across the board. It’s hard not seeing him have a much better season in every conceivable category.

The only teams that are significant defensive threats on paper are the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams. The Vikings were #1 in total defense last year and managed to add both Sheldon Richardson and a first round corner in the draft. The Rams overhauled their defense with big names including Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib, and the aforementioned Suh.

Nobody ever said Trubisky could have it all easy. One thing is clear though. Based on the forecasts for those defenses this year and his own anticipated improvement, it could be quite the airshow for the Bears offense in 2018.

Former Blackhawks’ Goalie Ray Emery Has Drowned

Former Blackhawks’ goalie, Ray Emery, has reportedly drowned early this morning. Emery was swimming with friends at the Hamilton Harbour and was said to have never resurfaced.

The Hamilton Police later confirmed the death of Ray Emery. They are awaiting the official cause of death.

On behalf of Sports Mockery, we would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to him and his family at this truly troubling time. Ray Emery was not only a great goaltender but a great person as well. Ray will surely be missed by his former teammates and their respective organizations, as well as countless others.

Rest easy, my friend.

VIDEO: MVP Chants Rain Down On Javier Baez In San Diego

Is Javier Baez currently the front-runner in the National League MVP race? No, but the Chicago Cubs second baseman is certainly in the discussion as MLB heads into the All-Star break.

Baez carried the Cubs to their 11-6 win Saturday night over the San Diego Padres, hitting his 19th home run of the season and driving in five runs. Baez now has 71 RBIs, just four shy of his career high that he set in 2017.

He’s only four home runs short of tying his career high of 24, which he also set last season. The MVP hype is no longer a fantasy driven by the most optimistic Cubs fans. The hype is real.

You can’t argue otherwise because at this moment, Javier Baez is a legitimate MVP candidate in the National League and fans in San Diego didn’t miss the chance to let Baez know.

The incredible part about last night’s game was that Baez almost didn’t even play. Ultimately, Baez decided to give it a go as Albert Almora Jr. was away from the team and he didn’t want to make the Cubs play even more shorthanded.

Baez leads the Cubs in almost every single offensive category. From hits to home runs, doubles, triples, RBIs, stolen bases, slugging percentage and OPS, Baez is at the top. His .293 batting average is second to Almora.

In the NL, Baez is tied for seventh in home runs with 19, tied for first with 71 RBIs, tied for sixth with 18 stolen bases, third in triples with six, fifth in doubles with 25, fourth in slugging at .571 and his 3.4 fWAR is fifth among all players in the National League.

An incredible season for Baez so far that has only been matched by two others since the first all-star game back in 1933.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon tried to figure out which one of The Beatles Baez was most like the other day and now he’s running out of ways to describe how great Baez has been.

Kyle Schwarber may have put it perfectly. All we see as fans is the flash. Baez’s teammates see all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.

“People see the flash and people see the style. In here, we see the toughness and the grit. That’s something that he brings to all of us.”

(Kyle Schwarber)

Javier Baez may have the highest baseball IQ in the game, he’s definitely one of the most exciting players to watch on a daily basis and now El Mago is in the MVP race.

Oh and not to brag or anything, but there may have been a podcast host *cough* me *cough* that brought up MVP talks for Baez at the end of June.

Oh and that podcast, Pinwheels and Ivy, is giving away a signed Jose Abreu bat.

Pretty easy to enter the giveaway contest. All you have to do is subscribe to Pinwheels and Ivy Podcast on iTunes, give us a five-star rating and leave a review.

VIDEO: Streaker Nearly Escapes From Security, Jumps Into Stands, PLOT TWIST: Gets Tackled By Fan

This is one of the cleanest hits I’ve seen and in tight space no less!

Give this kid a job, Rockies. Some streaker nearly escaped security in Colorado during Saturday’s game, as the jackass was able to run across the field and then jump into the stands down the left-field line.

Well, there was a fan waiting, who wasn’t having any of this bullshit and tackled the streaker, leaving him on the ground for security to grab the idiot.

Now that’s how you tackle.

VIDEO: Kyle Schwarber Blasts Opposite-Field Bomb

Kyle Schwarber is just getting warmed up for the Home Run Derby on Monday and boy is his swing a thing of beauty. Schwarber blasted a two-run shot against the San Diego Padres Saturday night, giving the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning.

That was Schwarber’s 18th home run of the season, tying him with Javier Baez for the team lead. Both of them will be competing in the HR derby Monday in Washington D.C.

As for Baez, he added a two-run double in the fifth inning that extended the lead for the Cubs to 5-2.

Baez now has 68 RBIs this season, ranking first on the Cubs and third most in the National League.

Maybe it’s time to take the MVP discussion more seriously for Baez.

Anyway, back to the derby. Schwarber getting in the work before Saturday’s game and hey he homered in the game, so his swing is just fine.

Hopefully Schwarber and Baez go deeper in the tournament Monday than Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant did a few years ago. Rizzo gave them some advice. You can read that here.
