We have reached the point in the MLB season where teams with fading playoff aspirations are placing their players on waivers, and a familiar face is the latest high-profile name to hit the wire. The Mets have placed former White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. on outright waivers, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. An expected move from the Mets’ perspective, it creates an interesting conversation about whether a reunion on the South Side makes sense.
White Sox fans are plenty familiar with Robert Jr. and his career arc. After spending parts of six seasons in Chicago where his tenure was defined by one outstanding season sandwiched between injuries and inconsistency, the team dealt him to the Mets in January of this year for Luisangel Acuña and pitching prospect Truman Pauley. It represented the end of an era and a clean slate for both parties.
Inconsistent Mets Tenure
Much like his time with the White Sox, Robert Jr.’s tenure with the Mets has been up and down. He struggled to find his footing in New York early in the season and ultimately missed nearly three months with a severe lumbar spine disc herniation. Since coming back from the injured list however, he has been more like the player that he was early in his career. In 32 games since coming back, he is hitting .233/.296/.476 with 8 home runs, including a multi home run performance in his return to the South Side last week.
Despite his recent production, the Mets are in the midst of a very disappointing season and are looking towards next year. Robert Jr. does not appear to be part of those plans, making his placement on waivers a logical move. The Mets can potentially save some money while opening a roster spot for the remainder of the season. As such, any team can claim him over the next 48 hours if they are willing to cover his salary.

Possible Fit On White Sox Roster
There are multiple factors to consider whether a reunion in Chicago makes sense. The first and most important consideration is roster construction. The team has found a consistent lineup against right-handed pitchers and hasn’t deviated from it much of late. One of the biggest surprises in all of MLB this season, Tristan Peters has cemented himself as the starting center fielder on a near daily basis and has been on fire of late.
The lineup against left-handed pitchers is much more of a question mark and represents a place on the roster where Robert Jr. is an upgrade. The team has cycled through a number of right-handed hitting outfielders this season trying to find a solution. They ultimately settled on Brenton Doyle, a trade deadline acquisition from the Rockies as the answer for that spot. While Doyle’s defense can’t be disputed, Robert Jr. would be an upgrade offensively in the same role. It’s an important factor to consider with the playoffs looming. Both the Yankees and Red Sox have multiple lefty starting pitchers they could throw at the White Sox in a playoff series, and Robert Jr. would help lengthen the lineup for those matchups. His presence would provide a power bat off the bench against right handers and also give Braden Montgomery a breather in certain games.
Clubhouse Chemistry
Team chemistry is another consideration. There has been plenty of criticism of Robert Jr.’s effort and consistency during his time in a White Sox uniform. However, manager Will Venable recently credited him with helping establish the team’s culture last season and Miguel Vargas has expressed similar feelings. The two recently had dinner before the Mets’ series in Chicago, with Vargas describing Robert as a brother.
“Besides baseball, he’s my brother personally. What he means to me and the impact he’s had on my life has been amazing,” Vargas said.
That relationship could be worth considering, particularly for a tight-knit White Sox team with a strong clubhouse culture. The fact that arguably the best hitter on the team thinks so highly of Robert Jr. means something and suggests that he is not a clubhouse cancer as many think.
Financial Considerations
Money is an additional factor. Robert Jr. has a $20 million team option for 2027 that will almost certainly not be picked up, so the White Sox would be on the hook for roughly $3 million for the rest of the season plus a $2 million buyout of the team option if they were to claim him. It feels unlikely that they would take on $5 million for a month of a weak-side platoon player, but stranger things have happened.
Decisions Loom
With an over 90% chance to make the playoffs according to Fangraphs following their win on Saturday, the White Sox are in an interesting position. The core of the team has been cemented but they could look to the waiver wire for reinforcements over the next few days to build the best possible roster ahead of the postseason. Luis Robert Jr. is an option and someone they clearly have a lot of familiarity with. The thought of a reunion would have been laughable just a month ago, though it’s worth pondering now. The organization already knows what he can be at his best. With the postseason approaching, the question is whether they want to give him one more chance on the South Side. That chapter might be over, but it’s fair to wonder if there is one more page left to write.
