This Didn’t Help The Cubs But It Was Still Funny As Hell Watching The Cardinals Self-Destruct

-

All right, so technically this kind of helped because with the loss by the Cardinals, the Cubs clinched their fourth straight playoff appearance, but they were going to do that anyway with their 7-6 win over the Pirates. Regardless, the Cardinals did lose to the Brewers, which kept Milwaukee 1/2 game behind Chicago and oh boy did St. Louis find a hilarious way to lose.

It was a 2-1 game in the eighth inning, when Jose Martinez hit a slow roller to Mike Moustakas, who then threw the ball beyond first base. Adolis Garcia was at first base, pinch running for Matt Carpenter, and he raced around third base, trying to score the game-tying run after the throwing error.

HOWEVER!

This happened instead.

Garcia would have scored if he didn’t fall down after rounding third base, but instead he was tagged out and the Cardinals were retired in order to end the game in the ninth, losing 2-1.

So, the Brewers also clinched at least a Wild Card spot.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals are now outside looking in at the playoff picture, as their recent losing streak has pushed them one game back of the Dodgers for the second Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Cubs obviously want to avoid the Wild Card Game and the Cardinals are still fighting for their playoff lives, so this weekend’s series between the division rivals should be interesting.
