So, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote some shit about analytics and that they’re not actually useful and combined that with the Cubs trading for Nick Castellanos. My summary doesn’t really make sense, but neither does Bob’s story. However, at least we did get Castellanos bashing the Players’ Weekend jerseys.
You’ve seen them, they were all awful and I’m not really sure why fans would waste money buying them.
Here’s what Castellanos said about the jerseys and complete failure by MLB.
Via USA today.
“This Players Weekend is promoting our individuality,’’ Castellanos tells USA TODAY Sports, “and what a worse way to give us a platform to promote ourselves by making our jerseys the exact same colors so people in the stands can’t see it. I was standing in right field and I couldn’t even see the number or names on the back.
“I think Major League Baseball made them the same color in case we tried to put something on the back of our jersey they wouldn’t like, so it wouldn’t show up. That’s the only thing I can think of. Just terrible marketing.’’
I still remember during Sunday’s game between the Cubs and Nationals that WGN was trying to show a close up of Cole Hamels so that you could see his nickname on the back of his jersey. Yet, you still couldn’t read it because the sun was reflecting off the all-white jerseys and numbers.
An incredibly stupid decision by MLB oh and by the way, home teams couldn’t even wear the entire uniforms. Starting pitchers had to wear black hats because wearing the white hats wasn’t going to work when they’re throwing a white baseball.
Let’s see how MLB screws up something that’s supposed to be fun next year.
