Right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay has been called up for the fourth time this season and he’ll be making his third start in the series finale against the Reds tonight.

Right-handed reliever Colin Rea has been optioned to South Bend to make room for Alzolay on the active roster. That was just one of several more moves the team announced on Thursday.

Veteran outfielder Steven Souza Jr. was released after he was DFA’d on Saturday and cleared waivers. Along with Souza, right-handed pitcher Juan Gámez and outfielder Ryan LaMarre were also let go from the club’s 60-man player pool.

Meanwhile, lefty reliever Matt Dermody cleared waivers after being DFA’d and for now he’ll head to South Bend as well. The Cubs also added Joe Wieland to the 60-man roster.

Wieland, 30, has a 6.32 ERA in 52.2 innings in the majors. He’s pitched for the Padres, Dodgers and Mariners, last appearing in MLB in 2016.

From 2017-19, Wieland pitched in Japan and Korea. In 2020, the righty started nine games in independent ball.

One last note, the Cubs sent 19-year-old prospect Pedro Martinez to the Rays as one of the PTBNL in the deal that brought José Martínez to Chicago.
