Cubs Reportedly Bringing Up Some Much Needed Offensive Help

SAN FRANCISCO — After a rough start to their road trip where the Chicago Cubs lost two of three games to the San Francisco Giants in pain-staking fashion, the Cubs will reportedly recall Ian Happ from Iowa as they head to Milwaukee to open a weekend series.

Happ has not yet played an inning for the major league team in 2019. The Cubs optioned him to Triple-A after Spring Training, where he struggled the whole first half of the year. But July has been a different story. Happ has hit .333 over his last 10 games with 10 runs scored, three homers and nine driven in.

Given how little the Cubs have gotten offensively from the likes of Albert Almora Jr., Daniel Descalso, David Bote, Addison Russell, and with Ben Zobrist still not available, the Cubs are hoping Happ can bring his hot streak and versatility to Milwaukee and contribute the rest of the season.

At the very least, Happ’s performance over the next couple of games will help inform Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer about the level of investment they need to make by the July 31st trade deadline.

Welcome back, Ian Happ!
