The White Sox Make Their First Splash Of The Offseason

-

The White Sox had a very successful season, even if the last playoff series didn’t go their way, as they weren’t expected to make the playoffs, let alone win a playoff series. Now, as they push into the 2026 offseason, there is plenty of positive momentum for 2027, even with the uncertainty of a lockout looming over baseball.

As we approach free agency, the White Sox have made their first addition, but not one that people would expect. According to Katie Woo and Ken Rosenthal, the White Sox have finally filled the shoes of Mike Shirley, who left the organization under mysterious circumstances earlier this year.

The White Sox have poached Matt Roffe from the World Series Champion Milwaukee Brewers to be their new scouting director. He previously served as the assistant direct of domestic scouting for the Brewers, who have been amazing at identifying and developing talent over the last decade.

It is always good practice to poach people from good organizations. Typically, those new hires can bring with them the mindset that helped make the previous organization so successful. Roffe will have some large shoes to fill, as the White Sox have been solid at evaluating talent in the draft the last few years.

Roffe has had roles with a few organizations in his short major league career, but it seems that he was instrumental in some of the last few drafts for the Brewers.

According to Joe Doyle of Overslotbaseball.com, Roffe was key in drafting current top-100 prospect Josh Adamczewski in the 15th round of the 2023 draft. This is a huge scouting win for Roffe and the Brewers, as you don’t turn 15th round picks into top-100 prospects everyday.

To hear this type of stuff about your new scouting director should get fans excited, as if the White Sox can continually nail the draft and stock the system with talent, they will have sustained success, similar to what the Brewers have been able to do. This would hopefully put an end to the rebuilds, as the Brewers can trade good players every year and still go on to win 100 games.

Now that the White Sox are good, they won’t be picking in the top-10 of the draft anymore. It is more important now than ever to be able to nail the picks in the draft and infuse the system with talent every year. Hopefully Roffe will be able to continue his eye for talent working with Chris Getz and the White Sox organization.
