The Cubs added a pair of lefties at the trade deadline, acquiring Josh Osich from the Red Sox and Andrew Chafin from the Diamondbacks, but it’s still not like the team has a legit shutdown lefty in the bullpen. Absolutely no one has confidence when they see Kyle Ryan warming up and Chafin is still sidelined with a finger issue.
Recently, The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma wrote about the Cubs’ plans to piece together their bullpen for the rest of 2020, and although we saw before that Brailyn Marquez might not be called up, Sharma said not to write him off just yet as a possible call up later this month.
That definitely got the attention of fans and this update from Cubs minor leaguer Dakota Mekkes is certainly more exciting.
Mekkes, who hosts The Compound podcast, along with Ian Happ and Zack Short, has been in South Bend, training with the rest of the guys on the team’s 60-man player pool this season.
On the latest episode of their podcast, Mekkes brought up Marquez and how he’s making big leaguers look silly in South Bend.
We know Marques has nasty stuff, so it’s no surprise that guys are getting fooled taking at-bats against him, but the biggest nugget from Mekkes is that the Cubs have Marquez pitching as a reliever right now.
I don’t think it’s that hard to figure out. It definitely appears as though the Cubs are preparing Marquez as a reliever because they’re seriously thinking about bringing him up and placing the lefty in the bullpen at some point this season.
And who wouldn’t love to see that. A left-hander who can easily touch 100mph with a couple secondary pitches? Do it Cubs, do it!
Bring us Brailyn Marquez!
