Right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay has been called up by the Cubs for today’s doubleheader against the Cardinals and as expected he’ll start the second game.

As of now Alzolay is serving as the 29th man on the roster, MLB gives teams an extra roster spot for doubleheaders, but hopefully Alzolay stays up for good following Wednesday’s action.

The 25-year-old made his MLB debut last summer with the Cubs and was awesome in his first two appearances. He pitched 8.2 innings combined against the Mets and Braves, and allowed just two runs on two hits.

Unfortunately, the righty was hit hard against the Pirates in his third MLB outing and after going back to Triple-A he landed on the injured list with a biceps issue. Alzolay then only made one more appearance in September for the Cubs.

For the first game of today’s doubleheader, rookie infielder Nico Hoerner is getting a start at third base. Not only is it the first time he’s starting at the hot corner for the Cubs, but it might be Hoerner’s first start there ever.

Meanwhile, Ian Happ remains at the top of the lineup with Kris Bryant still sidelined.
