Jordan Howard Is One of First Ever In NFL History To Do This

Jordan Howard has become the favorite of Chicago Bears fans everywhere in the past six months. Everybody loves an underdog or a Cinderella story. Howard is a little bit of both. A quiet young man from Alabama, he hoped to forge his football legacy at the University of Alabama-Birmingham as their featured running back.

Despite an outstanding 2014 season, his entire career was jeopardized when the football program at UAB went belly up. That left him without a team to play for. In the past some young men were forced to switch their entire future plans to something different when that happened. Howard held out hope he could rescue the moment.

He transferred to Indiana and worked his way into the starting lineup. There he became their offensive focal point. His play earned third and even second round grades from some draft experts. However, people were skeptical. He ended up falling to the fifth round were the Bears scooped him up. Even then people didn’t realize what Chicago had gotten.

Now the final stats are revealing it, and they’re staggering.

Kane and Delle Donne Make Forbes 30 Under 30 List

Every year Forbes magazine lists the top 30 people under 30 years old in different professional areas. This year, two Chicagoans, Patrick Kane and Elena Delle Donne made the sports list. Forbes looks for athletes who have “a high level of endurance to push the boundaries of success despite the many facets of pressure.” These are the athletes who are game changers on and off the field.

Chicago Blackhawks player Patrick Kane had already won rookie of the year(Calder Trophy), playoff MVP(Conn Smythe) and three Stanley Cups. Then to add to his resume he became the first American born player to lead the NHL in points(Art Ross Trophy) and only the second to win the league’s MVP(Hart Memorial Trophy) last season. Kane is one of the highest profile players in the NHL and has major endorsements with Bauer and Chevrolet.

Chicago Sky player Elena Delle Donne added a Gold Medal to her already impressive resume this summer at the Rio Olympics. In four WNBA seasons she has won the rookie of the year, a scoring title, and an MVP to go along with her 3 all-star appearances. A star in the WNBA, she has endorsements with major brands Nike and Gatorade. Delle Donne also works with the Special Olympics and has The Elena Delle Donne Charitable Foundation.

Former Chicago athletes Martellus Bennett and Chris Sale made the Forbes list but these two athletes didn’t leave the best impressions on their way out of town. You can see the whole Forbes 30 under 30 list here.

Jimmy Butler Drops 52 Points As Bulls Beat Hornets

“The Benching of Rajon Rondo” is a very real tale of woe, Bulls fans. Fred Hoiberg made it perfectly clear where Chicago’s $14 million point guard stands in the current rotation on Monday night. The answer? At the very back of it. The Bulls’ backcourt was shorthanded against the Charlotte Hornets as Dwyane Wade sat out with a swollen knee. Still, Hoiberg left Rondo on the bench. Jerian Grant served as Michael Carter-Williams’ primary backup, and seldom-used rookie Denzel Valentine got into the action while Rondo sat watching.

One Man Show

Without Wade, Jimmy Butler unsurprisingly carried the load for the Bulls. The overworked star tallied 52 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. It was enough, as Chicago beat the Hornets 118-111. The 52 points were a season high for Butler, who now has 3 40-point games this season. He just missed his career high of 53, which he set against Philadelphia last season. He also set a season high with 22 free throw attempts, converting all but one of them. How’s this for a stat, thanks to the one and only Christopher Kamka:

You know what that means. Not even Michael Jordan or Scottie Pippen accomplished such a feat in their 3+ seasons at the United Center.

This was the latest installment of Butler’s ascension to the elite company of NBA superstars this season. Unfortunately, he gave another such performance out of necessity and without much help from his teammates. Nikola Mirotic was the next highest scorer, adding 12 off the bench. It becomes disturbingly clear when Wade takes the occasional night off: this team is a Butler injury away from being a basement dweller in the Eastern Conference. Still, the Madhouse hadn’t gotten into a frenzy like that in quite a while. Butler is the show to see, ladies and gentleman. No question there.

Quick Hits

Denzel Valentine made the most of his extended minutes, scoring a career-high 9 points. He brought energy and passion to a lethargic group, and his three point shooting (3-5) was a welcome sight. He also did this to his ankle:

It’s the same left ankle that Valentine sprained earlier in the season. He did not return to the game. Cross your fingers that it doesn’t put him on the shelf after one of the better games in his rookie campaign.

In his fifth career start and first start this season, Doug McDermott had a slow start but came on strong in the 4th quarter. The Creighton kid had some great post up scores, which is rare for him in his Bulls tenure. He finished with 11 points on 5-12 shooting in 30 minutes.

2015 first round draft pick Bobby Portis continues to be an unused ghost in Hoiberg’s rotation. He saw another DNP-CD tonight and has played just 4 minutes in the Bulls’ last 8 games.

Kemba Walker, who’s looking like a first-time All Star candidate this season, led the Hornets with 34 points. Nicolas Batum chipped in with 19.

Next Up: The Bulls head to Cleveland to take on LeBron James and the defending champion Cavaliers on Wednesday. In one of their few great wins this season, Chicago toppled the Cavs 111-105 on December 2nd behind strong performances from all three “alphas.” That seems like a lifetime ago now. Tipoff on Wednesday is at 7:00 PM CST.

Meet The Guy Who Just Torched The Entire Chicago Bears Draft Plans

The Chicago Bears enter 2017 having accomplished two rare franchise feats. They finished the season 3-13, their worst record ever in a 16-game schedule. As a byproduct of that, they ended up with the third overall pick in the NFL draft this coming April. It will be the first time in 44 years the team has held a selection that high.

That was 1972 and the choice was Lionel Antoine out of Southern Illinois. He proved to be a bust, one of several made by the Bears brass during that dark stretch between the late 1960s and early 1970s. Naturally the organization is hoping their luck will be much better than it was back then. Given the state of things, it’s hard to be optimistic.

Nonetheless the speculation has already begun. Most had already begun to single out certain prospects who would be the prime targets for Chicago. Maybe it was a quarterback like Mitch Trubisky or Deshone Kizer. Then again there are potential pass rushers like Myles Garrett and Jonathan Allen. Even a stud running back in Leonard Fournette to pair with Jordan Howard is being discussed.

All of that will change now thanks to the singular decision of one young man.

Bulls Interested In Acquiring Brandon Knight Or Nerlens Noel

bulls trade brandon knight nerlens noel

With a sub-.500 record and growing frustration around the recent benching of free agent addition Rajon Rondo, the Chicago Bulls would be wise to start planning for big moves before the NBA’s trade deadline in February. Rondo recently informed the Chicago media that he would “absolutely” request a trade if he remains out of Fred Hoiberg’s rotation. The $14 million question is: what team would be willing to take on the aging point guard’s contract, and what other pieces would they insist be included in that package?

That question could give Gar Forman and John Paxson some sleepless nights in the near future. But it least it sounds like they have their eyes on a few potential trading targets.

Earlier today, the Bulls Nation blog reported that the team is interested in acquiring either Phoenix Suns guard Brandon Knight or Philadelphia 76ers big man Nerlens Noel.

Not The Knight Bulls Need

Let’s start with Brandon Knight. In one of his columns last week, ESPN’s Marc Stein reported that the Suns are looking to move the underwhelming guard before the deadline.

“The latest signals continue to suggest that Suns guard Brandon Knight will be one of the bigger names to move between now and the Feb. 23 trade deadline. Knight played only nine minutes in the Suns’ home win Thursday night over Toronto, less than 20-year-old rookie Tyler Ulis.” – Marc Stein

It appears as though the former first round pick has worn out his welcome in Phoenix. In addition to the emerging talent of Ulis, the Suns also have veteran Eric Bledsoe as their locked-in starter at the point. When Knight is on the floor, he’s hurting his team’s effectiveness. He has the league’s worst plus/minus total of -256. Why, exactly would the Bulls want to trade their struggling point guard for somebody even worse? Do they see Knight as a better backcourt fit with Dwyane Wade? He’s not necessarily as ball-dominant as Rondo, and can be a better scorer. But he’s still not a great shooter (39.5%) and he doesn’t have the passing skills of a true point guard.

Knight’s contract is slightly cheaper than Rondo’s this season. But he has 3 more years on the current deal worth $13.6 million, $14.6 million and $15.6 million. Does that sound like a good investment for the Bulls given his current numbers? No.

Nerlens Noel, on the other hand, just might be worth a closer look from Chicago’s front office.

Alshon Jeffery Just Made His 2017 Plans Clearer Than Ever

chicago bears

There may not be a player on the Chicago Bears roster who is harder to read than wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. It’s almost impossible to tell what he’s feeling or thinking. Such is the nature of his somewhat reserved personality. That is why experts and fans have grown frustrated. They just can’t figure out what his personal goals are.

Of course the obvious one is to win. Jeffery, like every other player on that roster is not happy about finishing 3-13. Keep in mind he arrived at the tail end of the Lovie Smith era when the team was still competing for division titles. He’s one of the few left on the roster who understands what that feels like.

The puzzling part is just what Alshon wants from a personal standpoint. Is it money he’s after? Does he wish to stay in Chicago or leave and join a current contender? The questions keep coming but he’s never provided a clear answer. That may have just changed following the end of the season finale.

REPORT: White Sox Receiving Minimal Trade Interest In Todd Frazier

Todd Frazier is greeted by Jose Abreu following his sixth home run of the season. [Photo: Twitter]

Even after moving Chris Sale and Adam Eaton, the Chicago White Sox are still looking to trade off their more valuable trade pieces. Jose Quintana seems likely to go, with David Robertson, Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier all hearing their name involved in trade rumors.

Frazier may be one of the better White Sox trade assets, however his scenario is a bit muddy at the moment.

He has proven himself as a hitter during his time in the MLB. In his six years and 791 major league games, Frazier has hit .250 with 148 homeruns, 422 RBIs and 38 stolen bases. He has atleast 29 homeruns, 80 RBIs and 13 stolen bases the past three seasons.

In acquiring Frazier teams understand that they’re getting one of the best power hitters in the league. However what may worry away franchises is Frazier’s impending free agency. Teams may be unwilling to pay top dollar for a player who could leave in 2018.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe confirms that theory in his most recent article. He writes:

While Chicago has received more interest in Jose Abreu, there have been “due diligence” phone calls on Frazier because of his righthanded power. Frazier had 40 homers and 98 RBIs last season. The White Sox would like to move him for a prospect or two, but the fact Frazier can be a free agent after next season may be holding back his market.

Cafardo also reports that teams are showing continued in Jose Abreu. Abreu is just 29 years old and was named the 2014 American League Rookie of the Year. In his three years in the league Abreu has hit .299 with 91 homeruns and 308 RBIs.

Abreu is unlikely to be moved, however if the White Sox are blown away, Rick Hahn will have to trade him. Cafardo reports that the White Sox first baseman is still drawing interest.

As for Frazier, Cafardo reports that teams are making “due diligence” calls on the third baseman. Meaning that teams are kicking the tires, but not making any serious offers for the slugger. Cafardo confirms that one of the main reasons for his lack of interest in his impending free agency.

The Los Angeles Dodgers seemed like an ideal landing spot for Frazier, however with the team re-signing Justin Turner, there is no spot for Frazier. Since the Dodgers have dropped out, no team has shown real interest in the third baseman.

Cafardo reports that the White Sox are looking for a prospect or two in talks for Frazier. But coming off a 40 homerun season, Rick Hahn is likely looking for one of the better prospects in a franchise’s farm system.

Until a team comes out and says that they’re interested in Frazier, his status will remain cloudy. The team has received minimal interest, but not enough for the team to make a deal.

It doesn’t make sense for a rebuilding team to keep a 40 homerun hitter, but as of now it seems that Todd Frazier may remain on the White Sox going in 2017.

Rajon Rondo Will Request Trade If Benching Becomes Permanent

rajon rondo

So much for the profitable marriage between Fred Hoiberg and Rajon Rondo, eh?

First it was a 4th quarter benching. Then the entire second half. After the Bulls’ latest blowout loss to the Milwaukee Bucks over the weekend, Rondo’s demotion has become unquestionably clear. He got a DNP-Coach’s Decision in that one, losing his starting job to defensive specialist Michael Carter-Williams. That trend doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon.

Get Me Out Of Here

At this morning’s shootaround, Hoiberg confirmed that Carter-Williams will be the starting point guard again tonight when the Bulls host the Charlotte Hornets. Second year guard Jerian Grant will serve as the primary backup, ahead of Rondo in the rotation.

The former NBA champion can’t be thrilled about such a drastic demotion. Nonetheless, Rondo is handling the situation with the utmost professionalism, according to Hoiberg.

As the Chicago Tribune‘s K.C. Johnson notes here, Rajon might be handling the situation with class but that doesn’t mean he’s content to stay. When asked by reporters if he’d request a trade if he remains out of the rotation, Rondo made himself perfectly clear: “absolutely.”

It’s hard to see the situation changing. Rondo has struggled to mesh well with his backcourt mate Dwyane Wade, and his shooting woes lead to major spacing issues when games slow down in the second half. But according to Johnson, Hoiberg hasn’t yet ruled out using Rondo with the team’s second unit.

The Bulls’ decision to make Rondo their #1 free agent target last summer now looks even more foolish than it did when it happened. There were questions about his attitude and whether or not he was the right fit for Hoiberg’s system. We haven’t hit the halfway point of the season, and he’s already served a suspension for lashing out at an assistant coach and now he’s been benched because his minutes aren’t helping the Bulls win games.

If Hoiberg and his bosses GarPax decide to stick with this decision (remember, it was John Paxson who said during a recent interview that the younger players on the roster needed more minutes) then keeping Rondo makes no sense. As ESPN’s Tim MacMahon noted earlier today, the Mavericks experienced a similar situation when things fell apart for Rondo in Dallas.

“Relevant to the Rajon Rondo situation unfolding in Chicago: The reason his mid-series departure from Dallas was mutual is because Mavs decision-makers didn’t think it was wise to keep him around the team after he’d been pulled from the rotation. And Rick Carlisle had made the call not to use Rondo against the Rockets anymore. All indications are that Rondo is handling his demotion professionally, but Bulls brass has to know that it has a potential ticking time bomb on its hands.” – Tim MacMahon

“Ticking time bomb” can’t be the situation Paxson, Gar Forman and Hoiberg hoped for when they brought Rondo in to run their offense. It’s something that they must handle as quickly and professionally as possible. The challenge, however, will be finding any teams interested in Rondo’s services if he’s demanding a trade before the deadline.

I never enjoy being the guy that says “I told you so” (wait, no, of course I do) but I and many other Bulls analysts saw this experiment failing when they signed Rondo last summer. Now GarPax must deal with the consequences of yet another poor organizational decision.

MLB Trade Rumors Suggests Trade Options At Catcher For The White Sox

Phil Rogers suggested a five step plan for a "quick" White Sox rebuild. But does it make much sense? (Photo courtesy of Brian Casella/Chicago Tribune)

While the White Sox rebuild has been wildly praised throughout the baseball universe, one position the team has yet to address is catcher.

Chicago has top prospect Zack Collins waiting in the minor leagues, however some are wary that he will remain behind the plate. The team has showed interest in young catchers in the past, yet the White Sox have yet to acquire one. Perhaps Collins could be the future at the position, but more likely than not the catcher of the future is not yet in the White Sox organization.

Going into the 2017 season the White Sox will have a catching duo of Omar Narvaez and Kevan Smith.

Narvaez made his major league debut last season appearing in 34 games. He hit .267 with one homerun and 10 RBIs. He threw out just 8% of base runners in 2016. Narvaez is likely to enter the season as the starter, however he is an average MLB catcher on his very best day.

Smith also made his MLB debut in 2016, appearing in seven games. He hit .125 with no other counting stats. He did throw out 33% of base runners. If the White Sox don’t add a catcher then Smith will likely be the backup, however it seems probable that Chicago will add a backstop before the offseason ends.

Narvaez and Smith are not the White Sox catchers of the future. They aren’t even good enough to be catchers of the future. However as the team rebuilds, the White Sox aren’t yet willing to spend the big bucks on a luxury catcher.

One suggestion would be for the White Sox to add a veteran leader at catcher. This way it allows for the team to trade for a young backstop or let Collins develop behind the plate. With the White Sox expected to have such a young pitching rotation, that catcher could help him reach his highest potential. A veteran catcher may not draw crowds, but it better helps the White Sox facilitate their rebuild by letting their young catchers and pitchers develop at their own pace.

There are some decent targets left on the free agent market including Kurt Suzuki, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Chris Ianetta. However the White Sox could also look to the trade market to add their 2017 catcher.

MLB Trade Rumors recently wrote an article detailing three of the White Sox biggest needs. Among the position of needs was catcher. MLBTR wrote that while the White Sox should search the trade market rather than free agency, Matt Wieters landing spot could be of utmost interest to the team.

Wieters is the top remaining catcher on the market. MLBTR believes that when he signs there could be a domino effect in the White Sox catcher pursuit. In doing so, the site suggested three potential trade options at catcher for the South Siders.

The site wrote:

Free agency doesn’t offer much in the way of solutions, but the White Sox could benefit from Matt Wieters’ decision. If he signs with the Braves, for instance, the Sox would be wise to at least inquire about their former backstop, Atlanta’s Tyler Flowers. On the other hand, the Nationals could shop one of their well-regarded veteran framers – Derek Norris or Jose Lobaton – if they sign Wieters.

Tyler Flowers played for the White Sox from 2009 to 2015. He spent his first year with the Braves in 2016. Flowers may no longer be on the White Sox, but after playing for organization so long he must still have connections within the franchise. Those connections could make his transition back to the South Side much easier.

Flowers has appeared in 514 major league games over eight seasons. He has hit .232 with 54 homeruns and 183 RBIs. Flowers is known for his framing abilities and is considered one of the best in the league. That framing ability would help benefit the White Sox young starting pitchers.

Derek Norris was actually traded from the Padres to the Nationals earlier this offseason with the expectation that he would be the starting catcher. But if the team were to sign Wieters, Norris would become expendable.

Norris has appeared in 557 major league games with the Athletics and Padres. He has hit .233 with 54 homeruns, 223 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. Norris made the All Star game in 2014. The White Sox could hope he regains that All Star form and becomes a trade asset at the deadline.

Jose Lobaton would probably be the White Sox third option. He doesn’t offer any outstanding traits, but has been in the MLB for the past seven seasons. His veteran leadership could help the young pitching staff grow.

Lobaton has appeared in 340 major league games with the Padres, Rays and Nationals. He has hit .226 with 17 homeruns and 92 RBIs.

Any of Flowers, Norris and Lobaton is an improvement over what the White Sox currently have. Flowers provides one of the best pitch framers in the league as well as a player they’re familiar with. Norris provides the White Sox with not only a vet, but a catcher with potential bounce-back value. Lobaton is the weakest link, but is still miles better than Navraez and Smith. If nothing else he allows the team more time to find their catcher of the future.

The White Sox must focus on the long-term at catcher. However adding any of these catchers in a low-cost trade would give Rick Hahn ample time to find that catcher while improving the current pitching staff at their own rate. While fans expect the team to trade off their assets, perhaps trading for a catcher would be best for the present and the future of the Chicago White Sox.

NFL Scouts Say Chicago Bears Almost Certain To Do This at #3 Pick

chicago bears 2017 draft

Mercifully, the 2016 season has drawn to a close for the Chicago Bears. They finish with their worst record ever in a 16-game regular season format at 3-13. Knee-jerk reactions are for the team to clean out the coaching staff, but rumors are that’s not happening. Team chairman George McCaskey seems willing to trust GM Ryan Pace, who is preaching patience.

Firing head coach John Fox won’t solve what was the Bears’ biggest problem from the beginning. Their roster. When he and Pace arrived in 2015, it was a deserted wasteland. All star power had either left, gotten old or grown to be too big a distraction. The only way to resurrect this phoenix was to let it burn to ashes.

That’s what happened. Old veteran players were steadily purged in favor of young free agents and draft picks. While solid in theory, the problem with such an approach is it can lead to growing pains. Young players make mistakes. It’s just a reality. Now here the Bears are, going into arguably their most important off-season in over a decade and holding their highest draft pick since 1972.

What in the world should they do with it?
