RUMOR: White Sox Showing Interest In Former All Star Shortstop

The White Sox are reportedly showing interest in this former All Star short stop. (Photo courtesy of Fox Sports)

Tim Anderson is going to be the White Sox shortstop for a very long time. In the White Sox rebuild Anderson is one of the few players who is untouchable.

But beyond Anderson the White Sox middle infield depth is one of their weak points. The team has Brett Lawrie as their starting second baseman with Tyler Saladino and Carlos Sanchez as backups.

Saladino and Sanchez have been serviceable at best during their time in the league. They are nothing more than mediocre backups and will unlikely be with the team when they’re ready for their playoff push.

The 2016-17 offseason has been focused on acquiring prospects to add to their growing farm system. Perhaps the White Sox could look to add a veteran free agent shortstop in hopes that he proves his worth on a short term contract. If so, he could turn into another trade piece for the South Siders.

However the shortstop position is quite weak in this year’s free agent class. If Rick Hahn is looking to add a shortstop it seems likely that he will be with the team for the long haul.

Regardless of the White Sox plans at shortstop, it is clear that the team has a preference at the position.

According to Gerald Hernandez of Spanish sports website La Prensa, the White Sox have shown interest in former All Star shortstop Everth Cabrera.

Hernandez wrote that the MLB veteran is hoping that a team gives him another chance in the league. In response, Cabrera said:

“I hope it’s what God wants. I would like an invitation to spring training. There are possibilities with Washington and the White Sox. They are interested and my lawyer is handling that.”

Cabrera spent seven seasons in the MLB with the Padres and most recently the Orioles. He was out of the league in 2017. He has appeared in 510 major league games.

Cabrera has a career .246 batting average with a 12 homeruns, 132 RBIs and 138 stolen bases. He was named to the 2013 All Star Game. Cabrera also had the third most stolen bases in 2012 with 44.

Cabrera hasn’t seen his name in many, if any rumors this offseason. After not spending 2016 in the MLB, he has become an afterthought to major league teams. At 30 years old teams may want to take a chance on their younger players rather than taking a chance on Cabrera.

However as the White Sox rebuild, they are in a position to take a chance on a guy like Cabrera. If he could find his 2012-2013 form, he could either be a vital piece of the team or a vital trade piece.

He provides a veteran shortstop behind youngster Tim Anderson. He would likely need to get some seasoning in the minors, but he could end up being better than Saladino and Sanchez.

While Cabrera would add a potential speed threat to the bench, there are some negatives. For one, he was suspended for PEDS during his time in the MLB. More worrisome, in 2015 Cabrera appeared in 29 games with the Orioles. In those games he hit just .208 with four RBIs and two stolen bases. There’s a chance that Cabrera just doesn’t have it anymore.

Overall Cabrera would be an interesting addition by the White Sox. He hasn’t heard his name called this offseason and would be an under-the-radar signing.

Middle infield wasn’t expect to be a big part of the White Sox offseason, especially in free agency. Yet it appears that the White Sox have their eyes set on Everth Cabrera and the All Star shortstop could be on the move to the South Side in 2017.

Ryan Pace Confirms Secondary Is A Huge Need For The Bears

Today at Halas Hall, Ryan Pace and John Fox held their season-ending press conference for the media. During the interview, Pace was directly asked why he didn’t address the secondary this year after a disastrous 2015 season from that group and here’s what he said…

Pace basically told everyone that they had higher expectations for Tracy Porter and Kyle Fuller. Porter suffered a few injuries and declined with his play this season rather than taking another step forward. Fuller had a knee scope but spent weeks in the training room trying to get back on the field, but it never materialized. Be it lack of health, or lack of talent.

Pace went on to point out that the organization is doing everything they can with Fuller to try and mold him back into the first-round player he was originally selected to be.

“If Kyle Fuller can be the player he was drafted to be, it would be huge for this organization.” Pace said.

The general manager of the Chicago Bears did not shy away from taking criticism for his decisions though. He made sure to point out that he didn’t draft Fuller, but cited a direct need in the secondary that appears to be obvious to everyone… and he took fault for it.

The Bears finished 29th in the league with just eight total interceptions, and not all of them came from the secondary. It was predictable as well because Pro Football Focus ranked Chicago’s secondary 31st entering the 2016 season.

With the third overall pick and names like Jamal Adams and Jabrill Peppers continuing to rise up people’s draft boards, don’t be surprised if Chicago uses a high pick to address this need. Pace is aware the Bears need help in the secondary and he intends on doing something about it.

To Celebrate Kris Bryant’s 25th Birthday, Here Are His Top 5 GIFs On The Internet

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is celebrating his 25th birthday today so I thought it would only be right to celebrate this occasion by sharing what I believe are the top five Kris Bryant GIFs on the World Wide Web.

Bryant is coming off his best season as a pro and is backing up all the hype that surrounded him when he entered the league back in 2015. The soft spoken kid from Las Vegas has turned into one of the premiere players in all of baseball and I’m damn happy that the Houston Astros passed up on Bryant in the 2013 MLB draft with the first overall pick for a guy named Mark Appel.

Shame on you Astros.

KB will be marrying his high school sweetheart, Jessica Delp, at the end of the month so because I can’t afford to send the couple a real present, I thought I’d slap a ribbon on this article and wish them a lifetime of happiness.

And I’m cheap.

5. KB Showing Off His Best “Blue Steel” Look

Coming in at the number 5 best Kris Bryant GIF is the Cubs All-Star doing something that has absolutely nothing to do with baseball — modeling. Since his arrival to the Cubs in 2015, major businesses have rushed to get Bryant to sign with them because lets face it, the guy’s pretty good looking. Between his endorsements, merchandise, and salary, Bryant’s 2016 net worth was right around $4.1 million dollars.

Not too bad for a 25-year-old.

Bryant currently endorses Red Bull, Adidas, and the men’s clothing line Express which you can see from the GIF above. After winning the MVP award, you can bet your money that other major businesses will be lining up to get his endorsement as well.

Just a side note: If you’re thinking about heading to your local Express to try and look like Bryant by rocking some slim cut chinos or a split collar athletic fit dress shirt, you may want to get to the gym first.

Take my advice on this one.

The Five Worst Mistakes Made By The Chicago Bears Franchise In The Last Five Years

marc trestman

Here are the five biggest mistakes made by the Chicago Bears franchise in the last five years (2011-2016). It is very hard to limit this list to five, and some will surely disagree on which ones were the absolute worst, so feel free to vote on your favorite disastrous decision at the end.

#5. Trading Greg Olsen To The Panthers – 2011

In July of 2011, the Chicago Bears traded tight end Greg Olsen to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Olsen had just finished his fourth season with the Bears which was a slight decline from his 2009 campaign where he scored eight touchdowns. In his previous three years with Chicago, before getting traded, Olsen scored 18 total touchdowns. His receptions peaked at 60 in 2009, but it was obvious to everyone he had unique scoring ability.

Olsen went on to appear in three Pro Bowls for Carolina and he’s played five, full, 16-game seasons in a row. He’s also been considered a top TE in the league for the last few years.

Chicago never selected with Carolina’s third-round pick, instead they traded it to Miami as part of the deal for Brandon Marshall. That turned out to be quite the mistake considering Russell Wilson was still on the board during that pick. The Bears went on to draft Brandon Hardin with their own third-rounder that year and he never once appeared in a real game due to various injuries.  Marshall only stayed with the team for three seasons and caused a lot of damage in the locker room each day he was here. The Bears are still indirectly recovering from the decision to trade Olsen back in 2011.

This May Be The Year The Chicago Bears Can’t Escape Hard Knocks

chicago bears

The Chicago Bears undoubtedly have one of their most important off-seasons in franchise history ahead of them. For the first time in eight years it’s a virtual lock they’re aiming for a change at the quarterback position. Jay Cutler has run his course. They just finished 3-13, their worst record ever in a 16-game season. To top it off head coach John Fox enters the third year of his tenure in charge, having won just nine of 32 games.

There is no question about the sense of urgency this team feels to get back to winning. The Bears haven’t made the playoffs since 2010, the Super Bowl since 2006 and won a championship since 1985. Fans have grown tired of watching other organizations without as much history continuing to celebrate at their expense.

This 2017 off-season can afford no mistakes and no distractions. The fewer the controversies, the better. Unfortunately that may be out of their control depending on what the NFL plans to do with one of its flagship programs.

WATCH: Ken Griffey Jr. Vs Kenny Lofton In 1993 Dunk Contest

The ’90s were awesome for so many reasons and the Foot Locker Slam Fest was an event that exemplified that. It took the biggest stars of sports from that time and put them in a fun competition. This 1993 first round match-up featured the two best Centerfielders of the era who later went on to play for the White Sox. Ken Griffey Jr and Kenny Lofton.

Both were well known for scaling the walls of the outfield to rob home runs in Major League Baseball but few had seen them on the court. Griffey had the advantage of 4 inches in height but Lofton played for Arizona from 1986-1989. He even appeared in a Final Four. Take a look at the match-up.

Lofton domintated Griffey, who didn’t make a single attempt. It’s probably not the way you thought this encounter would go.

Even though these guys didn’t play in Chicago, here’s a video of Barry Bonds vs. Deion Sanders from 1992 Foot Locker event. I wish events like this and MTV Rock and Jock would make a return.

CSN Chicago Names The Perfect Free Agent For the Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox offseason has been largely focused on their rebuild. The team moved Chris Sale and Adam Eaton and have been engaged in trade discussions involving their other veteran trade assets.

However the team understands that they must field a team in 2017. The prospects they acquire will take a year or two to develop. The upcoming season will allow for them to get more seasoning in the minors.

But the White Sox are still looking to get value out of their 2017 major league team. While Chicago is unlikely to make the playoffs, if any of their players perform, they too can become trade pieces at the Trade Deadline. Thus, the team can add more prospects and continue to build their super team of the future.

That idea came to fruition when the team signed Derek Holland. Holland is unlikely to make any headlines, however he is a pitcher who has succeeded in the past. If he is able to find that past success, then he becomes another trade piece for the White Sox.

As the team looks to bring in more outside talent, they need to continue to look for players with bounce-back potential. Signing them on short term deals allows for the White Sox to better facilitate their rebuild.

This idea was one of the main topics of the most recent White Sox Talk podcast presented by CSN Chicago. Chuck Garfien, Ryan MgcGuffy and Christopher Kamka discussed several free agents who could interest the White Sox.

Some of their free agent predictions were good:

Colby Rasmus

Pedro Alvarez

Some of their free agent predictions were bad:

Jake Peavy

Coco Crisp

However all three analysts agreed on one free agent target for the White Sox. In fact they went as far as to call him “perfect”.

MLB Insider Offers Unique Twist To Potential Jose Quintana Trade

Out of all the remaining White Sox trade assets, Jose Quintana may be the most intriguing. After Chris Sale was moved, Quintana became arguably the best pitcher available through the trade market.

Quintana has been in the MLB for the past five seasons, all with the White Sox. He has appeared in 154 games and 951 innings. Quintana holds a career 46-46 record with a 3.41 ERA and a 781/244 K/BB ratio. He was voted to his first All Star game in 2016.

Quintana is one of the most consistent pitchers in the MLB. He has pitched atleast 200 innings while holding a sub 3.60 ERA the past four seasons.

The White Sox pitcher also has an extremely team-friendly contract. He is making just $7 million in 2017 and is under team control until 2020. Any team acquiring Quintana is getting one of the best pitchers in the league at a discounted rate.

The Astros, Yankees and Pirates have been the most involved on Quintna. While some prospect packages have been thrown out, neither side has been able to agree to terms.

Talks on Quintana has died down, which is likely a direct result of the holidays. But if the White Sox want to move Quintana they’re going to have to find the perfect trade package.

Phil Rogers of MLB.com suggested a new trade proposal that could get a Quintana deal done. While it was purely hypothetical, Rogers asked if Quintana and Todd Frazier would be enough for Pittsburgh Pirates prospects Tyler Glasnow and Josh Bell.

Glasnow is the Pirates best prospect and the eigth best prospect in baseball according to MLB.com. He has appeared in 103 minor league games. Glasnow holds a 36-19 record with a 2.03 ERA and a 645/246 K/BB ratio.

Glasnow would be one of the team’s aces of the future. With pitching prospects Lucas Giolito, Michael Kopech and Reynaldo Lopez already in the organization, Glasnow would give the White Sox one of the deadliest pitching rotations whenever the prospects are ready.

Bell is the Pirates third best prospect and the 20th best prospect in baseball. Bell has appeared in 45 major league games. He hit .273 with three homeruns and 19 RBIs.

Bell was absolutely dominant in the minors, hitting 44 homeruns. On the White Sox he would likely be the team’s first baseman of the future. He is one of the best pure hitters in the minor leagues.

Both Glasnow and Bell would be amazing additions by the White Sox. They are both one of the best prospects at their position. Chicago would have three aces in Giolito, Kopech and Glasnow and an improving infield of Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada and Josh Bell.

However Rogers trade proposal has some holes.

Bell and Glasnow is a decent prospect package for Quintana alone. Adding a 40 homerun hitter in Frazier would only add value. While Bell and Glasnow are top prospects, Quintana is sure to demand a high return.

Frazier may be an upcoming free agent, but he isn’t a throw away. He is still a valuable piece to the White Sox or any team acquiring him. The Pirates would have to add more prospects to acquire both Quintana and Frazier.

While Frazier/Quintana for Bell/Glasnow doesn’t make much sense, Rogers is right in pointing out that Frazier could be a fit on the Pirates. Pittsburgh hasn’t really been connected to Frazier, however they could be in the market for another power hitter in the lineup.

Currently David Freese is slated to play third base for the team. But if Pittsburgh moves Bell they can slide Freese to first and put Frazier at third, adding an extra 30+ homeruns to their lineup.

The Pirates would have to up the anti to get both Quintana and Frazier, but they’re definitely a fit for both players.

Look for the Pirates to remain one of the more active teams trying to trade for Jose Quintana, and perhaps they could enter the Todd Frazier sweepstakes late. But for both to head to the Pittsburgh, the White Sox will need more than just Tyler Glasnow and Josh Bell.

This Shout-Out By Matt Forte Congratulating Jordan Howard Is Pure Class

Matt Forte was revered in the Chicago Bears fan community for being their most reliable offensive weapon across an eight-year span. No matter what went wrong with the offensive line, or the wide receiver or the quarterback. The team always knew if they got the ball to Forte, he’d make something happen to keep them in games.

That’s why it wasn’t easy to see him go this past off-season. Some held out hope that the Bears would sign him to a one-year deal even though he was turning 30. There was still a chance he might have a season or two left in the tank. GM Ryan Pace was not convinced. He chose to let the veteran running back walk and rebuild around a young crop of backs.

Experts were skeptical the Bears could ever replace what Forte brought. Not with guys like Jeremy Langford and Ka’Deem Carey. Little did anybody know that the quiet arrival of a rookie fifth round draft pick from Indiana would change everything.

This Steph Curry To The Bulls Trade Proposal Will Make Your Brain Hurt

steph curry bulls trade proposal

There’s crazy, and there’s just plain stupid.

Unfortunately for Roje Smith of Fansided, his recent work falls into that latter category. Smith recently published an article entitled 5 Crazy NBA Trades That Need To Happen. Without a doubt, the craziest (read: stupidest) trade proposal on the list has the Golden State Warriors sending reigning league MVP Steph Curry to Chicago for Rajon Rondo, Jerian Grant and a first round draft pick.

How ‘Bout No?

Perhaps he was just throwing random names into ESPN’s NBA Trade Machine and discovered that this one *technically* works from a contracts perspective.

steph curry bulls trade proposal
Courtesy of ESPN.com

Where to begin? First off, notice the estimated change in win total for both teams. The Bulls gain 12 wins by adding Curry, while the Warriors lose 11 wins by bringing in Rondo and Grant. Why on earth would Golden State make this trade? So there’s that.

A Weaker Curry

Smith tries to explain his reasoning for the Warriors agreeing to do this (seeing as the Bulls would leap at such a ridiculous opportunity, no explanation needed there.) He argues that the arrival of fellow superstar Kevin Durant has hurt Curry’s game this season.

“Curry is averaging 5.9 assists per game right now and that’s the lowest it’s been since the 2011-12 season. His three-point percentage sits at a .401 and that’s the lowest it’s been in his entire career. He was already an inferior overall player compared to Durant before this season. Now with KD as his teammate, it’s even more obvious and it appears as if a new ‘face’ of Golden State is emerging.” – Roje Smith

He goes on to suggest that other Warriors staples Klay Thompson and Draymond Green aren’t experiencing the same decline as Curry since Durant signed on.

“Klay Thompson hasn’t missed a beat since Kevin’s arrival and his numbers are nearly identical to last season’s. Only his three-point percentage is significantly down from last year and it’s actually a career-low at .389. Draymond Green also appears to be meshing well with Durant and his game hasn’t taken a major hit. Therefore, it leaves Curry as an odd man out.” – Roje Smith

Odd man out of what, exactly? Sure, Curry’s numbers are down a bit. But Smith tries to argue that the same isn’t true for Thompson, then immediately contradicts himself by citing that Klay’s three point percentage is also at a career low. Besides, it was expected that Curry’s numbers would dip with Durant on the team. Curry recruited Durant to come to Golden State, to take some of the scoring pressure off of the point guard. That’s exactly what Durant is doing for the *cough* NBA-leading Warriors.

Which leads me to this…WHY would the Warriors trade Curry while they’re trying to win another NBA title after coming so close to repeating last season?
