This NFL Playoffs Stat Predicts Likely Chicago Bears Draft Plan

By this point most Chicago Bears followers are focused on the upcoming off-season this March and April. The strong belief is that 2017 could end up being a pivotal turning point for the franchise. That’s the hope anyway. Nobody wants a 3-13 finish and being dead last in the NFC North to become a habit moving forward.

The million dollar question is how in the world do they pull it off? Head coach John Fox appears to be on the spot for this coming season. He’s only won nine games in his first two seasons. Patience is wearing thin to see any sign of progress. Instead his tenure has been marked by undisciplined play and rampant injuries.

Can he possibly hope to turn things around in year three or is he destined to see his likely last head coaching job end with a resounding thud? It’s certainly a herculean task, but one that could be made easier if the team can figure out how to crack a code that has befuddled them for decades.

VIDEO: Delight in Clay Matthews Being Posterized By Ridiculous Spin Move

There may be no more villanous character in modern Chicago Bears lore than Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews. So any time he’s put to task by another team, it’s must-see television. Enter Ezekiel Elliott. The Dallas Cowboys rookie running back has had an unforgettable season, and he may have just provided the signature play.

Needing a touchdown to tie the NFC divisional playoff, Matthews appears to have Elliott dead to rights on a blitz up the middle. He quickly found out he was mistaken.

Dallas went on to score the touchdown and two-point conversion to tie the game. Per usual the game was put back into the hands of Aaron Rodgers. Time will tell if he can put away or if the Cowboys get another chance. Rest assured Matthews isn’t eager to see Elliott the rest of the game. Not after something like that.

The winner of this contest will face the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game. A Packers victory means they go to Atlanta. If the Cowboys can complete the comeback, they would host the Falcons next week. No doubt either contest would be loads of fun to watch. Much-needed in an otherwise boring postseason.

Go Falcons.

Expect Bears To Get Major Deja Vu Watching This QB Prospect

chicago bears mitch trubisky

The Chicago Bears Mitch Trubisky talk is going to get louder and more frequent as the NFL draft approaches in April. That’s just the reality of the situation. Chicago is looking hard at the 2017 class after watching injuries and inconsistent play dominate the position in 2016. Jay Cutler is aging and hasn’t played a full season since 2009. Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley flashed but are clearly backups.

Trubisky is one of the top prospects expected to be available. Chicago holds the #3 pick in the first round. It’s fair to say they must know anything and everything possible about the Ohio native who enjoyed his first and only year starting at North Carolina. A good way to help that endeavor is by comparing him to current pros.

Several have been thrown around already. Some see Blaine Gabbert. Others Blake Bortles. A few even think he is rather similar to standout Eagles rookie Carson Wentz. However, upon examining the tape the Bears brass are going to have flashbacks (nightmares) of another familiar face they know too well. One who has broken their hearts far too often.

His name is Aaron Rodgers.

Heartbroken Northwestern Women’s Basketball Team Honors Player Who Committed Suicide

The Northwestern women’s basketball team suffered an unspeakable loss this week.

So you have to feel good about the Wildcats earning an 80-67 victory Saturday against Indiana in the first game since Northwestern sophomore Jordan Hankins committed suicide, reportedly by hanging herself in her dorm room.

Hankins was a 19-year-old sophomore from Indianapolis and student in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

The memories were everywhere at Welsh-Ryan Arena, as fans and players wore “Fly High J” shirts in her honor. Teammate Amber Jamison wore Hankins’ No. 5 jersey.

Point guard Ashley Deary had this to say after Saturday’s game: “Throughout the whole game we felt like we wanted to embody her spirit and her aggressiveness and her confidence. … Just play with her swagger. That’s what she would have done. She would just go at it. I just wanted to make her proud.”

Coach Joe McKeown said: “There’s no playbook. Everything I’m telling you is off the top of my head. We’re going to lean on each other.”

This column from Christine Brennan of USA Today about her interaction with the Northwestern women’s basketball team is worth a read.

Her high school alma mater, Lawrence North, wore these shirts in her memory this week:

Fans Deliver Some Hilarious Questions To Cubs Players During Panel Discussion

As the 32nd annual Cubs Convention comes to a close today at noon, the team will prepare to board a plane and make the trip east to meet with President Barack Obama in Washington D.C. The trip will be the icing on the cake to a historic 2016 season but before the team boards the plane, a handful of players were on the hot seat during different panel discussions at the convention yesterday.

Day 2 of the convention was highlighted by numerous panel discussions that featured players, coaches, legends, and executives. What made these so hilarious is the fact that any fan, of any age could wait in line to ask their favorite players whatever question they want.

The fans didn’t disappoint.

Devin Hester Plans To Retire After End of the Season

Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman were some of the favorites for Chicago Bears fans over the past two decades. However, it’s fair to say that none of them could leave people breathless quite like Devin Hester could. The former second round pick from Miami was a virtual unknown when he first stepped on that cool Lambeau Field grass for his rookie debut in 2006. Then he returned a punt for a touchdown.

Eleven years later and the man still keeps finding ways to bring football fans to their feet. His performance in the divisional round against Atlanta was a perfect example. He produced several long returns in the game. Unfortunately most of them were negates by untimely penalties by his teammates.

It no doubt brought a small tear to the eyes of Bears fans everywhere who still long to see him do that just one more time in navy blue. Sadly they may never get to see him to it again. Not based on a recent revelation courtesy of Seahawks beat writer Gregg Bell.

If this is the case then the conversations will soon shift to the inevitable next debate. Is Hester a future Pro Football Hall of Famer?

Most Recent Chicago Bears Championships Share Two Vital Similarities

bears 2017 record

There are many ways to explain away why the Chicago Bears have become one of the worst teams in the NFL over the past three seasons. It starts with their roster getting too old. Then it moves to roster mismanagement by two different front offices. Lastly the simple case of poor coaching. However, it goes far deeper than that.

For years the organization has been viewed as one more interested in the bottom line. In other words they are more concerned about making money than actually trying to win football games. How else could they justify keeping Ted Phillips, a career accountant, as their team president for 18 years?

So perhaps it’s somewhat ironic to use the term “misplaced investments” as a way to describe where this team went wrong. Not only that, but it also provides a clear avenue for them to regain their rightful place among the NFL elite.

WATCH: Always Wondered What David Ross Rapping Would Sound Like? Say No More.

Cubs fans were enthused to learn that even though he would no longer be playing for the Cubs, David Ross would remain with the team serving as a special assistant in the front office. Ross turned into a fan favorite during his two-year stint in Chicago and I’d challenge you to find a Cubs fan that has anything bad to say about the man.

He’s just a really good dude.

Although Rossy won’t be on the playing field each day, he said he’s excited to see the “other side” of baseball and learn the in’s and out’s of what it takes to run a Major League club. I’m fully confident Rossy will do an outstanding job doing whatever Jed and Theo ask but in the event that he doesn’t, it appears he has a fall back plan of being a rapper.

Yes, a rapper.

Jimmy Butler Returns & Dominates Court As Bulls Beat Pelicans

jimmy butler returns dominates bulls beat pelicans

Jimmy Butler looked like a guy who just came back to work, feeling refreshed from a tropical vacation. He was actually just nursing himself back to health in cold, grey Chicago. But whatever works. Work is exactly what Butler did on Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulls to a 107-99 win over the New Orleans Pelicans at the United Center.

The Bulls’ fearless leader returned from a two game absence due to illness. Really, it was a three game absence. He may have played 29 minutes against the Thunder on Monday, but he scored just 1 point on 0-6 shooting as he tried and failed to have himself a “flu game.” He looked healthy on Saturday though, providing the needy Bulls with a little bit of everything. Jimmy tallied 28 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. That’s a hell of a stat line. Per usual, the Bulls needed all of it to win.

Through the first three quarters, Dwyane Wade looked like a guy who turns 35 in a couple of days. He started the night 2-13 before scoring 15 of his 22 points in the 4th to help the Bulls preserve the victory. Fred Hoiberg said Wade will rest tomorrow while the team plays their back to back.

Other than Butler and Wade, the big key for Chicago was their absolute dominance on the boards. That’s been a strength for this team all season, and they made quick work of the Pelicans in that regard. They held a 63-42 advantage on the glass, and generated lots of extra possessions with 21 offensive rebounds. Robin Lopez provided 9 of those while Taj Gibson tallied 16 total.

Quick Hits

Nikola Mirotic missed his third straight game with the flu. He is not expected to play tomorrow. Denzel Valentine returned to action after missing one game with a stomach bug, but played just _ minutes with a healthier roster at Hoiberg’s disposal.

Former Bulls guard E’Twaun Moore had a nice game for New Orleans off the bench with 16 points. He signed a 4 year, $34 million deal with the Pelicans as a free agent last summer after playing two seasons in Chicago.

Anthony Davis scored 36 points to lead the Pelicans. He added 14 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Next Up: The Bulls face the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday to finish their back to back and stretch of 5 games in 7 days. This is the first of two games against Memphis this season. Tipoff is at 8:00 PM CST.
