5 Things Bulls Fans Need To Know About Cameron Payne

5 things bulls fans need know cameron payne

Here we are, Bulls fans. The All Star break is over. The NBA trade deadline has passed. Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott are gone. Cameron Payne, Anthony Morrow and Joffrey Lauvergne arrive in Chicago for the final 25 games of the regular season and a potential playoff push. Morrow and Lauvergne are both older and on expiring contracts, so it’s unlikely that they’ll be anything more than half-season afterthoughts when all is said and done. The real prize (if you can call him that) of this trade with the Thunder is Payne, the 22 year old point guard who was stuck behind one-man-wrecking-crew Russell Westbrook in OKC.

Bulls VP John Paxson spoke very highly of Payne in his post-deadline press conference Thursday night, noting that they wanted him in the 2015 draft. Paxson also highlighted the team’s ongoing need for a promising young point guard as the reason for making this trade. So let’s take a closer look at the newest member of Fred Hoiberg’s overcrowded backcourt.

1. Injury Risk

Cameron showed signs of promise as a rookie, but his second season got off to a rocky start because of injury. Last summer, he had surgery to repair a fracture in the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. By the time training camp started, he supposedly made a full recovery and was cleared to practice. However, Payne suffered an acute fracture to the same metatarsal just a few days into camp. (Acute fractures are more serious than non-acute fractures. They happen quickly and are usually more painful.) The second fracture caused him to miss the first 37 games this season.

Not only did the injury put a huge road block in Payne’s rhythm (he’s shooting just 33.1% from the field since returning), but it’s a serious warning sign for the future. Foot injuries can derail careers, so it’s worrisome that Payne is already dealing with them at such a young age. It’s also less common to see foot issues in smaller players as opposed to big men. Bill Walton, Yao Ming, Jermaine O’Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas all had their careers cut short or dramatically marginalized by foot injuries.

For a fanbase whose most recent point guard of value slowly deteriorated into an injury-plagued afterthought, Payne’s medical chart is unnerving.

But good basketball does run in his genes.

Jay Cutler Has A Response Ready If Bears Try To Trade Him

Jay Cutler gave his best to the Chicago Bears from 2009 to 2016. He put up a lot of yards, a lot of touchdowns and provided plenty of great highlights. In the end a mix of injuries, inconsistency and ineptitude led to things not working out between the two sides. Word has since arrived that the organization is prepared to go in a different direction at quarterback.

GM Ryan Pace is reportedly exploring the league for potential takers in a trade. A difficult scenario given most already know the Bears will cut him if they fail. Then again there might be something else making the matter difficult. Something from Cutler himself according to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report.

First of all it’s not like Cutler is a high value trade asset anyway. The best the Bears could hope for in a deal would be no more than a sixth round pick. Even so this move shouldn’t come as a surprise. The list of teams involved in a potential play for Cutler aren’t exactly encouraging. San Francisco and the Jets are the two with the high rumor rates. They were also two of the worst teams in the NFL last season.

Like any older quarterback (he turns 34 in April) Cutler knows his time is running out. His chances of winning a Super Bowl are slipping away fast. In such conditions a player would much rather be able to choose the team he plays for rather than have the team that doesn’t want him anymore choose it for him. This would explain his perceived threat of retirement if the Bears were to force his hand.

Maybe not the greatest news for Chicago, but it’s hard to blame him. He has no reason to be loyal to the organization any longer. Not since he’s all but gone already. It’s about business now and smart business says he must try to gain an edge into where he plays next. This is his best avenue.

Jimmy Butler Separates Himself From Front Office After Deadline Trade

bulls jimmy butler separates front office deadline trade

After what must’ve been a nice respite from the chaos surrounding his Chicago Bulls, Jimmy Butler was back at the Advocate Center Friday morning for a shootaround before their game against the Phoenix Suns. That’s right, he’s still here. Not in Boston. But the three-time All Star did lose two of his teammates, as Chicago sent Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott to the Oklahoma City Thunder prior to Thursday’s trade deadline.

The Athletic‘s Sean Highkin, who talked Bulls with The 312 guys this week, caught up with Butler Thursday morning. Jimmy said his spirits are high after a nice break, but some of his thoughts on what went down at the trade deadline and the front office decisions didn’t exactly exude believable optimism.

Jimmy’s Subtext

In his press conference last night, Paxson again refused to say concretely that the organization’s plan is to build around Butler moving forward. Between that and all of the trade speculation around him leading up to the deadline, is Jimmy upset?

Jimmy might be telling the truth about tuning out trade talks. But he must be offended that neither Paxson or Gar Forman has come out and said that he’s their untouchable star. They doubted Butler with a low-ball offer before his MIP season, and he’s done nothing but improve since. Most recently, that meant earning – and I mean earning – his first selection as an All Star starter. How can he not be bothered by the front office’s lukewarm sentiment?

It sounds like Jimmy is trying to separate himself from any talk about GarPax and Michael Reinsdorf’s “collective plan” for putting this team on the right path. Actually, that’s exactly what he’s doing.

We’ve heard this from Jimmy before. He has zero interest in talking about the business or managerial aspects of NBA basketball. He knows he’s doing his job, and he doesn’t want to talk about whether or not his bosses are doing theirs.

Joy & Grief

Butler gave his best attempt at sounding optimistic about everything with one succinct statement.

Doesn’t get much clearer than that, if you believe it.

If you don’t believe it, and think Jimmy is reeling from the loss of his teammates and pondering the competence of his bosses, his final thoughts on the trade are ripe for subtextual dissection.

On the loss of Taj and Doug:

This, Bulls fans, is classic Head Shrinking 101. There are five stages of grief. The first two? Denial (“it hasn’t set in yet”) and anger (“they’re my enemies now”). He might be moving through the stages quickly, but I’d put money on Jimmy grieving over this trade.

Last question, Jimmy. How is this Bulls team better after this trade?

“I guess we’ll find out tonight.”

Subtext = “We’re not a better team after that trade, and you’re going to see that tonight.”

Thanks for being so charmingly transparent, Jimmy. It’s a nice change of pace for Bulls fans who deal with all of the opaque garble that GarPax spit out whenever they choose to grace us with their presence.

Of course, Jimmy knows all about that. More so than the fans. That’s why he chooses to separate himself from such nonsense and focus on basketball.

In Honor Of His Number Being Retired, Here’s The Top 5 Mark Buehrle Moments

Earlier yesterday it was announced that Mark Buehrle will have his number retired at Guaranteed Rate Field on June 24th.

If we are being completely honest, I’ve never really even thought about Mark getting his number 56 enshrined in White Sox lore; however, looking back, one could argue that he is a Top 5 player in White Sox history. His stuff was never electric, or made people gasp. Instead, he consistently hit his spots, worked incredibly fast on the mound, and played exceptional defense.

Getting his number retired is something Buehrle absolutely deserves. Looking back at his career in Chicago, it is easy to see why he was beloved by so many.

Honorable Mention: First Career Jack

Without further ado, here is the top 5 Mark Buehrle moments on the South Side.

5) Between The Legs

Coming in at No. 5 on our list, is a play that most pitchers could only make in their wildest dreams.

On Opening Day in 2010, the White Sox were going head-to-head with their division rival, Cleveland Indians. In the top of the 5th, Buehrle took a screaming come-backer off of his leg, sending the ball down the first base line and into foul territory. Instead of Buehrle assuming the baserunner would be safe, he charged down the ball, and… well, see for yourself…

How Buehrle made this play look so effortless is beyond me. Between him chasing it down after taking a line drive off of his leg, flipping it between his legs to Paul Konerko without even looking, and avoiding making contact with the baserunner, this is truly a defensive play for the ages.

Konerko bare-handing the ball just puts the icing on the cake.

Saying Goodbye To Jay Cutler With His 10 Most Unforgettable Bears Moments

jay cutler

Jay Cutler was many things. He had a right arm that could deliver passes from the Sears Tower to Lake Michigan without the aid of wind. His attitude could be characterized as surly toward fans off the field but he was incredibly generous to charities. His trademark bad decision-making and turnovers turned many against him but his toughness and ability in the clutch brought others to his side.

The man was anything but predictable. Having a 52-52 career record with the Chicago Bears seems almost too perfect a way for him to go out. A reflection of the Jekyll/Hyde nature he brought to the quarterback position. He was a man who delivered 16 comebacks in the fourth quarter across eight seasons but could only beat the arch rival Packers twice. Amazing as it sounds, Bears fans are just as conflicted on how they feel about him as they were when he first arrived.

One thing that is clear though is he holds every major passing record in franchise history and provided a wealth of highlights during his time under center. Ones that even his hater will have to begrudgingly admit made watching him every week a thrill. Here are 10 of his best moments.

Cubs Star Adds To His Ink Collection With A Commemorative World Series Tattoo

Cubs fans across the nation ran to their local tattoo shops following the Cubs World Series victory a few months ago. OK, maybe not ALL fans ran to get a tattoo but those who enjoy getting some ink done saw the Cubs winning it all as a great opportunity to forever commemorate the historic occasion on their skin.

I ran into a guy named Greg at this years Cubs Convention that told me the World Series championship meant so much to him that it was a no-brainer to get something to symbolize the Cubs first championship in over a century.

It took yours truly a little bit longer to get a championship tattoo because let’s face it, tattoos are expensive as shit. However, once I saved up (and convinced my wife to let me do it), I made a trip to my long time tattoo artist to get some work.

Three hours (and about 27 curse words later) this bad boy was done by Marshall Brown of Brown Brothers Tattoo shop. I’ve gotten a ton of compliments on my unusually large Commissioner’s trophy tattoo but I’ve also gotten a lot of shit about it as well, usually from people who have zero tattoos and don’t understand why people get tattoos in the first place.

So anytime someone gives me shit about it, I usually say, “If you think mine is over the top, check out this guy.”

Cubs superstar Javier Baez has joined the ranks of thousands of Cubs fans who have gotten some celebratory ink over the past few months. He shared his newest tattoo on the WGN Morning news this morning.

Patrick Kane Nets His 3rd Career Hat-Trick As Hawks Pile It On The Coyotes

It’s been a wacky night at the United Center between the Chicago Blackhawks and Arizona Coyotes, but Patrick Kane stole the show as he has the tendency to do.

Kane netted his third goal of Thursday’s game midway through the third period to earn the third regular season hat-trick of his prolific career.

The Blackhawks have been on fire lately and this was the team’s second hatty in two games. Jonathan Toews earned a hat-trick in Tuesday’s win over the Minnesota Wild.

It’s the first time the Hawks have had hat-tricks in consecutive games (including the postseason) since Dustin Byfuglien and Toews netted a trio of goals in Games 3 and 4 of the 2010 Western Conference Semifinal, per Christopher Kamka. He adds that the Hawks haven’t earned back-to-back hat-tricks in the regular season since 1997.

A cleanup crew was needed at the United Center after Kane beat Mike Smith to the far side.

Clean up after Patrick Kane's hat trick

A post shared by Scott Powers (@byscottpowers) on

What might make this game even more enjoyable for Blackhawks fans is that it came against Smith, who has allowed six goals on the night. Surely, nobody is feeling bad for the agitating ‘Yotes goaltender.

The Blackhawks are playing easily their best hockey of the season in February. The question is whether this impressive play is sustainable. If it is, then the Hawks might be a handful for anyone in the Western Conference when the playoffs roll around.

John Paxson Spits Complete Nonsense At Deadline Press Conference

bulls john paxson spits complete nonsense deadline press conference

“Um…what?”

That’s what Bulls fans must be thinking after a head-scratching press conference from vice president John Paxson on Thursday evening following the NBA trade deadline. Paxson addressed the trade that sent Doug McDermott and Taj Gibson to Oklahoma City. He answered several tough questions about the cohesiveness of the team’s front office and the direction (or lack thereof) of the organization. Pax came across as very defensive -even offended – as he denied such “false narratives” exist regarding how he, general manager Gar Forman and president Michael Reinsdorf work together.

It was very bizarre, and most of it came across as complete nonsense.

He Said It

In case you missed the press conference, here are the highlights:

The Trade

Explain the trade that brought in Cameron Payne, Anthony Morrow and Joffrey Lauvergne:

Obviously OKC’s backup point guard Payne (22) is the most valuable piece the Bulls got in return for Taj and Doug, and represents the youth Paxson is referring to. Lauvergne is 25 and Morrow is 31. Both are on expiring contracts and could very likely be gone after this season. So Payne means getting younger, and he’s a guy they loved when they were scouting for the 2015 draft. You know, just like they loved Marquis Teague, Tony Snell, Nikola Mirotic, and that kid McDermott they traded up to get before trading away.

Paxson also reiterated the importance of finding the right player to lead the team from the point guard position. So how many point guards do they have now? 26? Where will Payne fit in Fred Hoiberg’s rotation? Do Paxson and his colleagues really see him as the floor general of the future, despite his recurring foot injuries and atrocious shooting?

Let’s continue…

Bulls Insider Says Team Likely To Trade Jimmy Butler Before 2017 Draft

antoine walker slams jimmy butler bad leadership bulls

Has everyone caught their breath yet? Not sure about you, but I’m on my 7th cup of coffee and I’m still mentally drained from everything that’s transpired for Bulls Nation in the last 24 hours. Chicago traded Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott to the Oklahoma City Thunder just minutes before the NBA trade deadline passed at 2:00 today.

We’ll get to how that trade affects the team’s future soon enough, but right now the bigger story is what didn’t happen. Amid a flurry of conflicting reports, the Bulls held firm on the stance that they had no plans to trade All Star Jimmy Butler before the deadline.

Who Knows What?

When I say conflicting reports…goodness. The “discussions” between the Bulls and Boston Celtics for a potential Butler trade ranged from nonexistent to being one piece away from completion.

Here’s a sample of what different reporters were told about Butler and the Celtics:

Mark one tally in the “was never going to happen” column.

Then there’s this:

Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical believed that both of Boston’s first round picks owed to them from Brooklyn were on the negotiating table in a potential deal for Butler. Woj also said the following:

This could just be conjecture from Woj, because two hours before the deadline he tweeted this:

So what was the Bulls front office looking for? Did the trade not happen because Boston’s president Danny Ainge wasn’t willing to sacrifice his valuable draft picks? Or, did he not want to give up talented pieces of his current roster? Other reports suggest Gar Forman and John Paxson wanted players instead of picks. David Aldridge of TNT believed that Jae Crowder, much like the talks last year, is the final piece of the puzzle that both teams wanted.

Suffice it to say that no one really knows what (if anything) went down between the Bulls and Celtics front office executives leading up to this deadline. Perhaps clarity will come in time, but that doesn’t really matter at the moment.

Not Now, But Later

Interestingly, GarPax’s decision to keep Butler may be short-lived. He’ll finish out this season in a Bulls jersey, that’s for sure. But what about this summer? One Bulls insider believes it’s only a matter of time until Jimmy Buckets gets shipped.

Chatting with the guys on Waddle & Silvy after the deadline passed, ESPN Bulls reporter Nick Friedell dropped a serious hint about Butler’s future in Chicago. I tweeted Friedell’s thoughts as he was live on the air. Silvy asked Nick why he thought Butler wasn’t traded. Here’s what Nick had to say:

There’s a lot to dissect there, but Friedell definitely has a point. The Bulls had limited options for dealing Jimmy at this trade deadline. Essentially, the Celtics were the only team capable of offering them the right pieces. We were told by multiple sources, including ESPN’s Marc Stein, that GarPax wouldn’t even listen to offers from other teams.

“Offering draft pick-centric trades? No thanks.” – GarPax

But as Friedell points out, the Bulls might find they have many more legitimate suitors for Butler once teams’ lottery picks are locked in. There’s also the possibility that some teams -who were basically inactive on deadline day – will be interested in dealing for Jimmy once they’ve assessed their rosters’ needs.

With more suitors come more offers, and GarPax could pick the one they liked best. Thus, Jimmy could very likely be on his way out as the 2017 draft approaches.

Not “The” Guy

Now to break down the next part of Friedell’s analysis. Nobody in the Bulls front office – not Forman, Paxson or either Reinsdorf – has come out and said that Butler is their untouchable franchise player. They’ve been given every chance to do so, but they haven’t. That’s something Nick brought up when he said on a different ESPN Radio interview that GarPax don’t believe Jimmy can be the #1 star on a championship-caliber team. If the front office guys truly believe that, then trading him to restart their roster is the logical choice.

At his press conference Thursday evening, Paxson still refused to say that the plan is to build around Butler. Here’s his answer when posed with that question directly:

Friedell also notes that Butler may tire of playing on bad teams that can’t really contend for titles, or at least make perennial deep playoff runs. If the front office fails to build a decent team around Jimmy, he’ll surely use his player option in the summer of 2019. That could mean losing a top-ten player and getting nothing in return. It’s possible that GarPax are already thinking about that; not wanting to become the next victims of a Kevin Durant-leaving-Oklahoma situation. “We’ll trade him before he can abandon us!”

…It seems silly now, but in another way it’s a very real scenario that the Bulls front office is already contemplating.

The countdown to the deadline has come and gone, but a new countdown just started. The 2017 NBA Draft is in 118 days. That’s how long the Bulls bosses have to decide if trading Jimmy and starting over is the right move for the organization. Forman (pro-“re-tool”) and Paxson (pro-rebuild) better come to a consensus and make a logical move.

It’s asking a lot of those two, I know.

The Bears Quarterback Connection That People Shouldn’t Keep Ignoring

kirk cousins bears

The rampant speculation is becoming too much for many fans. It’s clear enough the Chicago Bears know their agenda for the 2017 offseason. Simple and straightforward are the words that apply best. It begins and ends with finding a quarterback that can help the team win now and hopefully in the future. Such things are incredibly complex and complicated.

Will it be Tony Romo? The 36-year old veteran has ties to Eastern Illinois from back in college and the Bears will have money to spend. He’s got a productive history on his side. Will it be Jimmy Garoppolo? Indeed the Patriots backup to Tom Brady is the media darling of the moment, viewed as the best QB available on the entire market. Or will it be a rookie? Chicago does own the #3 overall pick in the first round. that gives them a shot at landing one of the top talents at the position this year.

All viable and realistic options. That much is plain. Yet it’s not every option that has been mentioned. In fact there is a rather big elephant in the room that many haven’t really discussed in regards to Chicago. One that is more realistic than people realize.
