David Ross Played With The Harlem Globetrotters

David Ross is having a great time during his first year after retiring from baseball. He went out as a World Series champion and is still one of the most beloved people in the Chicago Cubs organization. The fun continued for Ross this week, when he was officially put on the Dancing With The Stars cast and he also got to play with the Harlem Globetrotters.

The Globetrotters played in Tallahassee earlier this week and Ross was breaking ankles (not really) and making sweet layups. Hey, this was more entertaining than that 28-point loss by the Bulls the other day.

Coach should be fired for keeping Ross on the bench for too long.

Kris Bryant Was “Blown Away” When He Received A Text From A Future Hall Of Famer

It’s pretty strange to think about the fact that Kris Bryant believes there is someone on this Earth who has no idea who he is. The reigning NL MVP has turned into the face of the Chicago Cubs and is on his way to becoming the face of MLB baseball so when he shared that he received a congratulatory text after winning the World Series from a future Hall of Famer, he said he was surprised the guy even knew who he was.

That guy was NFL great Peyton Manning.

I think it’s safe to say that everyone knows who are KB.

The Other Bears Free Agent Target That Should Excite The Hell Out of People

ricky wagner bears

For the first time in what feels like forever, the Chicago Bears are close to securing one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. That much was proven last season. Not only did the unit allow just 28 sacks, they also blocked for the second-leading rusher in the league Jordan Howard. Everything is pointed up in the trenches on offense for them.

They have two Pro Bowl guards on the interior with Josh Sitton and Kyle Long. Joining them is center Cody Whitehair, the surprise first-year sensation who took home All-Rookie honors. Pretty amazing when one considers he’d never played center once in college. This trio forms the bedrock of the success the team had offensively last season.

It was felt that the Bears were unlikely to make any significant changes to their current lineup. Likely they would instead focus on acquiring a quarterback and more weapons for whoever it ends up being to use. However, recent rumors have revealed GM Ryan Pace isn’t ready to rest on his laurels.

Is Brandon Marshall Retiring After Being Released By Jets?

Late on Thursday, several reports indicated that the New York Jets have released six-time pro bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall. The 32-year-old played two seasons with the Jets after the Chicago Bears traded him to New York before the 2015 season.

Marshall only had three touchdown catches in 2016, as the Jets had major quarterback issues and ended the season at 5-11. Marshall was in the final year of his three-year, $26 million contract.

Marshall reportedly asked for the release and the Jets were willing to make the cut.

Marshall has played 11 seasons with four different teams during his career and now is hoping to find a better fit.

Yet, after he was traded by the Bears, Marshall said on Twitter that the Jets would be his final team. If he was cut, he would retire. This was from July 2015.

It’s not just that tweet because in December 2015, Marshall said the following to the New York Daily News.

“Once the Jets say, ‘We don’t need you anymore,’ I’m going to venture off into that world,” Marshall told the Daily News. “I’m not playing for another team. Four is all I need. It’s too hard to make new friends and relationships and deal with different egos. I don’t like the business already. So I’m not trying to deal with that.”

Of course, a lot can change in two years. One factor that comes into play is that although Marshall has put up some great individual seasons, he still has not played in the postseason. So, the motivation to be on a winning team could certainly be more prevalent with Marshall after two rough years in New York.

Marshall has 941 catches, 12,061 yards and 82 touchdowns during his 11-year career. In his first two seasons with the Bears, Marshall put up some eye-popping numbers, hauling in 218 catches and 23 touchdowns. After Ryan Pace and the new coaching staff came in, Marshall’s time was up and was dealt to the Jets for a fifth round draft pick.

So, we’ll wait and see what’s next for Marshall, who split Bears fans in half after he was traded. Again, he put up good numbers during his first year in New York, but he wasn’t enough to get them to the next level.

By the way, now that Marshall is gone, the Jay Cutler to the Jets talk is going to ramp up.

Jose Quintana’s Trade Value Through The Roof After Major Red Sox Injury

Going into the 2017 MLB season the Red Sox are considered one of the favorites to win the American League pennant. While the team still looks strong, Boston’s World Series hopes took a major hit following the recent David Price injury.

Price underwent an MRI for what he described as “elbow soreness”. While Red Sox manager described the results as “inconclusive”, Price is going to see Dr. James Andrews, usually a precursor to undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Losing Price for any amount of time would be a big blow for Boston. The team was expected to have one of the best pitching rotations in baseball with Price, Rick Porcello and Chris Sale leading the charge. While Porcello and Sale represent arguably the best 1-2 punch in baseball, Price puts the Red Sox over as a potential World Series caliber team.

One American League Executive went as far to say that losing Price is almost like losing two pitchers based on how high his work load is.

The former CY Young contender has been in the MLB for the past nine seasons with stops in Tampa Bay and Detroit prior to Boston. He has appeared in 253 games and 1,671.2 innings. Price holds a career 121-65 record with a 3.21 ERA and a 1,600/421 K/BB ratio.

There’s still a chance that Price’s injury turns out to be nothing. However with a trip to Dr. Andrews on the horizon, things aren’t looking great for the former Vanderbilt grad.

With the Red Sox potentially in need of another front-line starting pitcher, some have begun to wonder if White Sox ace Jose Quintana could fill the void.

Two Aces, Different Sox

The White and Red Sox took over the Winter Meetings when former traded ace Chris Sale to the latter. If Price is down for the count, Boston seems like a logical landing spot for Jose Quintana.

Quintana has been in the MLB for the past five seasons, appearing in 154 games and 951 innings. He holds a career 46-46 record with a 3.41 ERA and a 781/244 K/BB ratio.

The White Sox ace has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the MLB, appearing in atleast 200 innings while holding a sub 3.52 ERA the past four seasons. Quintana was rewarded in 2016 as he was voted to his first All Star game.

Quintana also comes on an extremely team-friendly contract. He is making just $7 million in 2017 and is under team control until 2020. The Red Sox would be able to easily fit Quintana on their payroll.

Quintana may not have the name recognition that David Price has, but he has been just as talented. Adding the current White Sox would allow the Red Sox to have the three-headed monster atop their rotation they covet.

Boston didn’t acquire Sale to be a one and done in the playoffs. Dave Dombrowski can prove the Red Sox are serious about winning a World Series by making another huge move and adding Quintana.

If Price is truly out for the year the Red Sox may need one more ace to beat the Indians and others in the American League. Jose Quintana is unarguably the best and most readily available “ace type pitcher on the market. Adding him would put the Red Sox right back into World Series contention.

What Would It Cost?

While it’s easy to say that Quintana to the Red Sox is an easy fit, it’s harder to say what Boston may be willing to move in a deal.

Buster Olney asked if the Red Sox would be willing to spend top prospect Rafael Devers to land Quintana.

Devers is currently the Red Sox second best prospect and the 17th best prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. The third baseman has appeared in 313 minor league games, hitting .293 with 29 home runs, 198 RBIs and 26 stolen bases.

It was widely reported that Rick Hahn was infatuated with Devers during the Sale talks, however Dombrowski refused to include him. While Devers would be an amazing fit on the South Side, it’s unlikely that the Red Sox would move him.

Devers is the future at third base with the Red Sox. With Pablo Sandoval currently manning the position, that future could come much sooner than later. While Quintana would fill their pitching woes, it seems unlikely that Boston would be willing to mortgage such a big part of their future, especially when they were reluctant to move him in the Sale deal.

The only issue for the Red Sox is that if they don’t move Devers, there’s a very good chance they cannot land Quintana. The team only has two other top 100 prospects and Andrew Benintendi isn’t going anywhere. A package built around 18 year old pitching prospect Jason Groome may not be enough for the White Sox to pull the trigger.

If the Red Sox want Quintana, they have the prospects to pull a deal off. But if they refuse to move Devers again, there’s a good chance the ace will stay on the South Side.

Not So Fast…

While the Red Sox landing Quintana will be the focus following the Price news, there’s multiple other teams who could now look to make a move.

Specifically the Houston Astros and New York Yankees come to mind.

The Astros and Yankees have both been heavily involved in the Jose Quintana trade talks. Both have been considered the favorites at one point or another. Unfortunately either side was unable to match on terms. The Red Sox misfortune could help jump start talks.

The Red Sox and Indians were considered heavy favorites in the American League. Essentially they were on their own tier compared to the others. With the Sox falling down a notch, the Yankees and Astros could look to jump them in the standings.

The Yankees could look to flat out win the AL East while the Astros could look to win the AL West. Adding a pitcher of Quintana’s ability would greatly increase both team’s playoff chances. At the very least either team would be able to earn a Wild Card spot.

New York and Houston has been unwilling to meet the White Sox terms for Quintana. But with an open opportunity to steal a playoff spot from the Red Sox, there’s a chance either team increases their offer for the White Sox ace.

Overall

The Boston Red Sox now look to be in a position to trade for Jose Quintana. If Price’s injury is serious, they might need that third ace to win the American League. If they choose to go that route, Quintana should be their guy.

On the other hand, Boston may be reluctant to trade one of their top prospects in Rafael Devers. The third baseman is supposedly the future in Boston. The team must decide if they’re willing to mortgage so much of their future in a deal for Quintana.

If that becomes the case there’s a chance that a team like the Astros and Yankees swoop in and make a deal for Quintana. With a playoff spot now potentially up for grabs, there’s a chance Houston or Yankees make a big splash to win their way to the World Series.

Regardless of who he is dealt to, it’s evident that Quintana’s trade value is only becoming greater. David Price’s injury shows just how fragile pitchers can be. Consistency is the name of the game, and Quintana oozes that vital trait.

Someone is going to get an amazing pitcher in Jose Quintana, and in return the White Sox should add even more talented prospects to a rapidly improving farm system.

Why The Mike Glennon To Chicago Mass Panic Is Overblown

mike glennon trade

Panic is setting in across the state of Illinois as word spreads the Chicago Bears seem to have their sights set on their next quarterback. Only it’s not the white knight they see in Jimmy Garoppolo or the old gun coming to save the town from burning like Tony Romo. No it’s a potential extension of mediocre nightmare from which they just can’t seem to wake up.

That’s the feeling anyways as news hit the team has eyes for 27-year old Mike Glennon. A former backup of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he’s expected to be one of the top free agent quarterbacks available. Initial rumors indicated the Bears and Jets were interested, something Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune has since confirmed.

“Indications are that Glennon will be the Bears’ top target to replace Jay Cutler, potentially pairing the veteran with a draft pick. A third-round pick in 2013, Glennon started 18 games in his first two seasons with the Bucs before Jameis Winston replaced him.

One NFC South head coach praised the 6-foot-7 Glennon for a strong arm, good decisions (30 touchdowns, 15 interceptions in his career) and a quick release considering his big frame. The Jets are considered a potential suitor, and Glennon could cost $10 million to $12 million per year.”

This could not be worse news for fans. Many are asking how the Bears can possibly justify Glennon being an upgrade over Cutler or even Brian Hoyer this season? Given the avalanche of reasons spreading across social media, it seems like downright madness. Is it though? Here is a rundown of the highlights people are arguing.

Kane’s Hat Trick Hats Will Be Made Into Museum Exhibit

I was there standing and cheering for Patrick Kane’s Hat Trick on March 1st as hats flooded the ice. It was hat night so I knew there would be more hitting the ice than normal. The whole time I was just thinking, “I wonder where all those hats go?”

The next evening I received a message from one of my friends with the answer. The Blackhawks donated the hats from both of his recent hat tricks to the Chicago Sports Museum, located next to Harry Caray’s Restaurant in Water Tower.

The museum and restaurants are owned by Grant DePorter. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the man who bought the Steve Bartman baseball to blow it up.

He may be the single biggest collector of anything related to Chicago sports and he shares it at the museum. It is an amazing place to see his constantly evolving collection and it receives regular updates so it’s not always the same.

I am excited to see how they display all the hats and I will be sure to make a trip once a date is set. I’m hoping they’ll just throw them in a room and you can roll around in them like a ball pit. Whatever they choose, I’ll keep the Sports Mockery fans up to date so you can relive the moments over again.

I’ve gained a little piece of mind about what happens to all those hats. At least this time.

Buzz Growing That Bears Hope To Do This Early In NFL Draft

CHICAGO, IL - APRIL 30: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announces that Kevin White of the West Virginia Mountaineers is picked #7 overall by the Chicago Bears during the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University on April 30, 2015 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

There are those Chicago Bears fans who revel in not having any clue what their team will do in the NFL draft. Then there are those who can’t stand it. Based on standard protocol under the current regime, the latter group must be feeling ill. At present nobody has the slightest clue what the Bears are planning. All they can do is speculate based on knowing the teams’ needs and structure of the current draft class.

Quarterback, safety, cornerback, tight end and wide receiver all belong on the list of pressing needs. Considering this team just finished going 3-13, odds are there are others the Bears would like to fill as well. Free agency will help with that, but GM Ryan Pace isn’t known for being a splurge kind of guy. He’s always preferred to build through the draft.

In order to do that though he needs picks. He’ll have the standard amount of seven going into next April. That isn’t a bad thing. However, there is a growing rumble that the 38-year old may desire a little more flexibility than that.

Joe Maddon Confirms 2017 Opening Day Starter For The Cubs

There wasn’t really much doubt, but Joe Maddon has confirmed the 2017 Opening Day starter for the Chicago Cubs.

On Wednesday, Maddon announced that lefty Jon Lester will be the Opening Day starter for the Cubs, who begin the 2017 season against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Lester had an outstanding second season with the Cubs in 2016, posting a 2.44 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 202.2 innings. He was the clear-cut ace, even with Kyle Hendricks’ ERA title year, and started Game 1 of the NLDS, NLCS and World Series for the Cubs.

As for Hendricks, he won’t be starting the second game of the season, despite his brilliant 2016 campaign.

Jake Arrieta will be a free agent after the season ends and this may very well be his final year with the Cubs. Arrieta and the Cubs avoided arbitration this year, settling on a one-year deal worth about $15.6 million. Although there have been no reports of any contract extension talks between the two sides, Arrieta said at the start of spring training that he’d like to continue his tenure in Chicago.

We’ll see, as the soon to be 31-year-old has the best agent in the game Scott Boras, who has gotten his pitching clients $200 million contracts in the past.

As for the rest of the rotation after Lester, Arrieta and Hendricks, John Lackey will the No. 4, while Mike Montgomery and Brett Anderson will seemingly each get starts as the fifth starter.

Last quick note, on Opening Day, Lester’s first opposing batter will be Dexter Fowler.

The Cubs and Cardinals start the season on Sunday April 2, on ESPN in St. Louis.

Alshon Jeffery Drops Latest Hint of Unlikely Bears Return

alshon jeffery

The Chicago Bears chose not to franchise tag Alshon Jeffery for a second time. GM Ryan Pace knows the decision was a difficult one but stated that sometimes a player has to test his value before reaching a decision. His words were quite logical, stating that it’s much easier to overcome not signing a player than it was signing him at the wrong price.

Put simply Jeffery is going to be a free agent. What nobody knows for sure is whether the Bears still have a chance to keep him. The franchise does have a history of being able to do that. They did it with Olin Kreutz and Lance Briggs. It’s all about determining what other teams will offer and seeing if Chicago can match it.

What nobody has bothered to ask is whether this sequence of events has really been about money. Recent comments by the receiver himself would seem to indicate the desire runs a bit deeper than that.
