Mel Kiper Is Still Gushing About The Bears 2016 Draft Class

chicago bears rankings

For the first time in what feels like ages, the Chicago Bears 2016 draft class gave hope to fans everywhere. Any draft can have one good player in it. Case and point being the 2013 version with Kyle Long emerging from otherwise burnt wreckage. The only way to build a truly successful team though is to hit on multiple picks per draft. Something that became lost on this franchise for almost a decade.

That may finally be changing thanks to the arrival of GM Ryan Pace. After an unfortunate false start in 2015 due mostly to injury problems, his 2016 run was quite the showcase. So much in fact that several noted draft analysts still find time to talk about it almost a calendar year after it happened. None more so than ESPN personality Mel Kiper.

Smitten for the Bears 2016 draft class

In his final grades for teams from that draft, he couldn’t help but offer his ongoing admiration for the job Pace pulled off. Top to bottom in his minds it’s a group rich in instant production and long-term potential.

“The Bears have to get a really good grade so far, because at two spots they got guys who are already really good NFL players — among everybody, not just rookies — and they got exceptional value. I’ll start there: Cody Whitehair is already one of the top handful of centers in the NFL, and the Bears got him late in Round 2. Jordan Howard is already one of the top five or six running backs in the NFL, and the Bears got him in Round 5. On a per-snap basis, he was every bit as good and arguably better than Ezekiel Elliott.

I expressed concern at the time about Leonard Floyd’s frame and how well he could hold up, but he had 12 starts, seven sacks, made my All-Rookie Team and showed he can be a disruptive force. I said then I thought Nick Kwiatkoski could start early, and that could be the case in Year 2. From there, the only question is if the Bears can develop some of the secondary talent they added. If so, it’s a bonus on a solid class.”

Getting one player in a draft with Pro Bowl potential is terrific. Pace may have gotten three. Howard dominated from the moment he stepped on the field last year. He steamrolled defenses for 1,313 yards and averaged a whopping 5.2 yards per carry. Some wonder how much better it might’ve been had he not be kept on a leash through the first three games.

Not a one-man show

Whitehair might actually be the more amazing story though. A left tackle at Kansas State, he was slated to make the switch to left guard. That became a problem when starting center Hroniss Grasu tore his ACL. Scrambling for answers, the Bears got a reprieve when Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton fell into their laps late in free agency. Whitehair was asked to make room for him by moving to center, a position he’d never played. A few months later he’s ranked as the sixth best at the position in the NFL. Wow.

As for Floyd, he battled through a series of unlucky injuries in 2016. He finished with seven sacks and a very memorable sack-fumble-touchdown on Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Doing this despite playing with a frame that was considered not NFL ready. He was too thin and needed time to bulk up. Try to imagine what will happen if and when he gets that taken care of.

If this group progress as hoped, this team may have the core in place they need to build around. To think they have a draft coming up where they hold a top five pick in each of the top four rounds. Pace has a gigantic opportunity to add even more firepower to a young and ascending roster. He better. It’s unlikely he’ll be able to survive another 3-13 finish in 2017.

Front Office Source Says Bulls Star Jimmy Butler Is “As Good As Gone”

bulls star jimmy butler makes change representation

As the Bulls battle Miami, Indiana and Detroit for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs, most fans have at least one eye on the upcoming summer months. For a team in desperate need of change to get out their NBA purgatory rut, there is an expectation and demand for big moves to be made. None more jarring than the potential trade of three-time All Star Jimmy Butler.

Butler has repeatedly expressed his desire to stay in Chicago and lead the Bulls back to championship glory. But as the roster is currently constructed, he doesn’t have much help and championship contention feels light years away. Perhaps it would be in the front office’s best interest to trade Butler – a star in his prime – for younger talent and draft picks to help shape a new era in Chicago. It’s something Gar Forman and John Paxson won’t just do for the sake of doing it. They’ve made it very clear they’ll only trade Butler if the package they receive is of equal or greater value.

That’s their story now, anyway. If Bulls brass finally sees the writing on the wall, they may ease up on their demand for a king’s ransom to part with Butler. At least one front office executive believes Jimmy’s departure from Chicago this summer is already a sure thing.

The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor released a column earlier today touching on a number of NBA storylines for the summer of 2017. Among them, he cites an NBA front office executive as a source for the following statement:

“Paul George and Jimmy Butler were involved in trade rumors at the deadline, and all indications are that those conversations will resume this offseason. One front-office source told me recently that Butler is ‘as good as gone,’ while George sounds like a player who wants out.” – Kevin O’Connor

As good as gone. Given the way Paxson and Forman spoke about the weak offers they heard for Butler at the trade deadline last month, it’s hard to believe they’ll deal him for scraps. Knowing that fans are already upset with their recent “decisions” – and seeing how Kings fans reacted to the DeMarcus Cousins trade – GarPax won’t risk losing Butler and losing the trade that sends him away.

Or, according to one NBA executive, maybe they will. It will likely come down to who owns the first pick in the 2017 draft. If Boston gets it, those ongoing talks between Danny Ainge and GarPax will likely resume. A negotiation has to start somewhere, and it’s hard to see the Bulls letting Butler go without getting a guarantee to take their pick from a stocked draft class.

While Butler and his teammates try to fight their way into playoff contention, his bosses could be playing out ideal scenarios for his Chicago exit.

Kris Bryant’s Dad Gives LaVar Ball Some Much Needed Parental Advice

Mike Bryant, father of NL MVP Kris Bryant, recently chimed in on the media whore that is also known as LaVar Ball. In case you’ve been under a rock the past few weeks, Ball is the father of UCLA basketball standout Lonzo Ball and has created a media frenzy surrounding his family by making some of the following claims:

  1. On November 25, he guaranteed that UCLA (Lonzo’s team) would win the National Championship. As we all know, Kentucky took care of that promise.
  2. Lonzo is a projected top 3 pick in the upcoming NBA draft and in February, LaVar said his son would only play for the Los Angeles Lakers. LaVar later retracted that statement and said he was only speaking Lonzo playing for the Lakers “into existence.”
  3. He is reportedly seeking a $1 billion dollar packaged shoe deal for his three sons.
  4. About two weeks ago, he said that he would “kill” Michael Jordan in a game of 1-on-1.
  5. Most recently, he claimed his son is better than reigning NBA MVP Steph Curry.

Mike Bryant knows a few things about reigning MVPs because his son, Kris, will be the reigning MVP going into the 2017 MLB season. The difference between Mike and LaVar however, is the fact that Mike’s son has already “made it” as a big-time professional athlete while Lavar’s son is still on his way.

One would think that LaVar would be open to listening to advice from a guy who’s been there and done that as it relates to raising a superstar athlete but we’re yet to see if LaVar will take to the advice that Mike gave him when he went on ESPN 1000 yesterday.

“The guy is going to ruin it for his kids…If I had five minutes with him and I could get him to listen for two of them I think I could get him to think a little bit.”

From everything I’ve heard and read about Mike Bryant, he was no slouch as a dad. He had Kris hitting in the batting cages from an early age, worked tirelessly trying to create a perfect swing, and kept on his son in the classroom as well.

So the guy’s advice has some credibility behind it. He’s walked the walk AND talked the talk.

LaVar, to this point, has just talked.

If history holds true, I’m sure Ball will call up Bryant and the conversation would go something like this:

LaVar: Hey Mike, I heard you on the radio yesterday telling me I’m ruining sports for my kids.

Mike: It was said with good intent Lavar, I didn’t mean for you to take it negatively.

LaVar: Well I took it that way Mike. Matter of fact while I’m thinking about it, your son’s swing is completely off. His back elbow is up too high and I don’t like the way he follows through either. Actually, while I have you on the line, I used to play a little baseball in high school myself.

Mike: LaVar…..

LaVar: I’d bet you I could hit a ball farther than Kris right now. I hit something like 87 home runs my senior year.

Mike: (hangs up phone)

Look, I understand what LaVar Ball is doing with his whole “shock value” shtick. I’d bet you that when he’s not in front of a camera he’s probably a pretty regular guy but he has to throw on this outlandish, crazy father persona to feed into the media hype (and more importantly, keep the media focused on his sons).

It’s actually pretty smart to be honest.

However, when you are probably more famous then your division one athlete son, that’s kind of a problem. I think it’d be safe to say that if you polled 100 people, all 100 of them would know who Kris Bryant was while most of them would have no idea who his father was — which is the way it’s supposed to be.

WATCH: Brawl Breaks Out After McDonald’s All-American Game At United Center

Every year the United Center plays host to the prestigious McDonald’s All-American game, attracting thousands of fans.

Last night was no different; however, a brawl broke out in the concourse of the 300-level after the actual game. According to Sun-Times, more than 10,000 fans attended the game on Wednesday, despite no local players being involved.

The game organizers released the following statement:

“Naturally, we are disappointed by this kind of activity, which runs counter to the spirit of the McDonald’s All American Games. But we are equally grateful to the United Center Security team and the Chicago Police for restoring order. We refer all further questions to the Chicago Police.”

NFL Insider Hints Jay Cutler Is Ready For Big Career Decision

CHICAGO, IL - JANUARY 23: Jay Cutler #6 of the Chicago Bears holds his head down after being knocked to the turf against the Green Bay Packers during the NFC Championship game at Soldier Field on January 23, 2011 in Chicago, Illinois. Jay Cutler retires. Is the NFL ready to hear those words? No one can say the former Chicago Bears quarterback was a fan favorite of many. Even so, it just feels weird thinking that there might be a season without him. For all the controversy that seemed to follow his wake, the man made Sundays interesting to watch. Nobody had a clue what was going to happen.

It was just assumed that Cutler would look to continue his career. He’s only 33-years old. Most talented quarterbacks with his record should get a decent offer to play somewhere. Odds are he has at least three or four good seasons left in him. However, that may not be the case. With each day that passes, Cutler remains unsigned by anybody. Meanwhile he’s living it up in the tropics, enjoying the offseason with his smoking hot wife.

He’s so comfortable in fact that he willingly let that same wife take a bare ass picture of him. This is the same Cutler who shied away from the media every chance he got. Certainly seems like a man ready to move on to the next phase of his life.

Jay Cutler retires idea is not crazy

It was hinted at a month ago that if released by the Bears, Cutler might consider retirement if he couldn’t land a starting job with another team. ESPN insider Adam Schefter went on the Mike & Mike radio program recently and offered his input. There is a growing belief that barring a considerable offer from an NFL team, Jay will indeed hang up the cleats.

If this is the case, then it seems so fitting that the last play of his career played out the way it did. Don’t recall? Here’s a quick refresher. On the road in a cold MetLife Stadium. The Bears are trailing by a touchdown. Jay has them on a late drive in the fourth quarter. They have one last chance to force overtime. Cutler drops back and…well…does his thing.

It seems so fitting. That play is basically a microcosm of his entire career. Always close. Always under fire. Ever defiant and seeming to be so close to that signature victory. Only to uncork the gunslinger at the worst possible time to throw it all away. Jay Cutler is perhaps the ultimate what-if story. A ridiculously talented passer who just could never put it all together. Something always seemed to be missing.

A man who divided lockers rooms and entire fan bases. There was no gray area with Jay. People loved him or hated him. If nothing else his legacy will be defined by his resilience, his toughness, his divisiveness and the ever underrated work he did for charity. In the end, if not praise, he’s a man deserving of respect.

Relive Blackhawks 4 Goal First Period Against Penguins

The Blackhawks had an awful few days in Florida. A 7-0 shellacking by the Panthers and blowing a 3 goal lead to lose 5-4 in OT against the Lightning. This left fans questioning their abilities.

They quickly put the doubts to rest in the first period of their game against the Penguins on Wednesday night. What looked like a great matchup on paper between two 103 point teams, started ugly. The first period saw the Blackhawks put four goals in a Fleury. Pun intended.

Panarin scored on an amazing feed from Kane, Schmaltz to Panik for a sweet one-timer, Kruger accidentally sniped a goal after a dish from Kane and Hartman fed Hossa for the fourth goal against Marc-Andre Fleury.

Watch them all below.

Ryan Pace Raves About The Potential In Cameron Meredith

cameron meredith

Several Chicago Bears fans are still upset about the loss of Alshon Jeffery. It’s easy to understand why. He was the first drafted wide receiver by the franchise to reach a Pro Bowl in over a decade. One of just two in the entire Super Bowl era. That’s significant. How in the world can this team justify letting a player with that sort of credibility walk? The simple answer is money. An understated one? Cameron Meredith.

It’s well-known at this point that Jeffery wanted to get paid among the top five or six receivers in the league. A price that the Bears didn’t feel he was worth. Not after missing 11 games between 2015 and 2016, posting under 900 yards each time. Top receivers are far more reliable and productive than that. Why throw too much money at Jeffery when it appears Meredith is an ascending talent?

The Cameron Meredith pro comparison is too sweet

Count Bears GM Ryan Pace among the believers. Not only in who Meredith is as a player, but also who he can become in the near future. There is a growing confidence that the 24-year old former undrafted free agent is set for takeoff in 2017. Not just as a solid pass target but perhaps even a true go-to guy for new quarterback Mike Glennon.

Pace talked about him at the annual NFL owners meetings in Arizona. During which he made a comparison to another former pro. Someone who garner quite a reputation around the league.

“I’m excited about Cam. I just see him getting better and better, no different than we talked about Marcus Cooper,” Pace said. “Cam’s a guy with a lot of upside, the path that he took, and just to see him mature over the past couple of years. I hate to make comparisons but I felt I saw this happen with (Marques) Colston a little bit, and Cam just has a great attitude right now, is getting better. I just love his skill set, love his professionalism, and I think we’re going to see him ascend.”

Indeed the career trajectory is remarkably similar. Colston was a little-known seventh round pick out of Hofstra in 2006. Before anybody realized what was happening, the 6’4″ kid from Pennsylvania posted 1,000-yard seasons in six of his first seven years. He wasn’t the flashiest target for Drew Brees on the Saints’ rise to a Super Bowl championship. He was just the best and most reliable.

Meredith does exhibit a similar game. He’s big (6’3″) and not blazing fast but faster than people realize. Where he really makes his money, like with Colston, is his rapidly improving tree of routes. Combine size with good speed and an understanding of how to set up defensive backs with crisp route running? That has the makings of a truly special player. To say nothing of the fact that Meredith plays with a lot more edge and nasty than people give him credit for.

In 14 games last season, Meredith came out of nowhere to catch 66 passes for 888 yards and four touchdowns. All three numbers were better than Jeffery. The fact Meredith did it with three different quarterbacks throwing him the ball makes it all the more impressive. With Jeffery gone and opponents focused on Jordan Howard, the odds are stacking up that 2017 will end up being a breakout campaign for the former Illinois State Redbird.

Kris Bryant’s Former Coach Shares A Story Further Proving He’s A Living Legend

I was fortunate enough to get to cover the Cubs this weekend as they participated in an event called Big League Weekend which saw them play two games at beautiful Cashman Field in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Obviously the hype was on another level due to the Cubs being the defending champions for the first time in over a century but the city was also buzzing because the NL MVP was returning to play in front of his home crowd.

I’ve always known that Cubs fans traveled very well but even I was shocked to see the amount of blue in the stands more than two hours before first pitch. I mean, Vegas isn’t exactly known for being a hot-bed of Cubs fans.

I had the chance to hang out all weekend with Kris Bryant’s high school coaches and of course, our conversations revolved around baseball and most of the folklore that is starting to turn Kris Bryant into a living legend.

Ryan Pace Reveals Why He Signed Mark Sanchez

bears #3 pick plans

Chicago fans have been very confused with Ryan Pace’s strategy after the recent signing of Mark Sanchez. Does this mean there won’t be a quarterback drafted? Is Sanchez really a viable option to backup Mike Glennon?

Endless jokes and memes flooded the Internet the second the Bears announced the news, here’s an example:

In a recent interview with WGN, Pace revealed the ways he intends to use Sanchez in Chicago this season. Pace sees Sanchez as “a really good, solid No. 2 quarterback.”

“I like him in this role for a lot of reasons and one of them is the experience that he has,” Pace said. “He’s been through the highs and lows of our league. He’s played in some big markets, he’s dealt with challenges, he’s dealt with success. I think he’s the kind of player that exudes confidence. I like that about him.

Pace said Sanchez and Glennon have already “clicked,” organizing workouts on their own.

“You think about Mike, he’s still a young player,” Pace said. “Mike’s a young player coming into a starting role in a big market. And Sanchez has done that. So I think having some of those experiences is going to help behind the scenes.”

Essentially, Pace will be using Sanchez as a mentor for Glennon as he embarks on his first season as the starting quarterback for the Bears. This is somewhat confusing because a lot of fans expected Glennon to serve as a mentor for a young rookie quarterback, predicted to be drafted high, who would presumably become “the future.”

Judging by Pace’s recent comments, it seems Sanchez was brought in to help develop the “inexperienced” Glennon. Could be a rewarding strategy considering Glennon is only 27 years-old and even though he has five years experience, he’s only thrown 11 real passes in the last two years.

Sanchez played in two consecutive AFC championship games and was originally a 5th overall pick, if anything he does have experience.

But again, does this mean Chicago won’t be drafting a quarterback with the third overall pick?

“We’ll have an elite group of names that we’re confident will be there (at No. 3),” Pace said. “But beyond that, OK, there’s some pretty good depth in this draft, too, so are there scenarios — and it’s easier said than done — where we can trade back. Those things’ll be discussed.”

Nobody knows just yet, but Pace is adamant about taking the “best player available” wherever he picks.

It is worth noting the Denver Broncos signed Sanchez last year, then drafted Paxton Lynch in the first round, and ended up cutting him. Just sayin…. Bear down.

The Best Movie Star To Play Each Cubs Player In Upcoming Film

Since news has broken that there will be a movie documenting the Chicago Cubs World Series championship, a few websites have weighed in on who should be cast to play certain Chicago Cubs players. To be quite honest with you, some of them are really REALLY good but most of them are completely off.

Daniel Day Lewis as Javier Baez? (I’m looking at you Sports Illustrated.)

Now I’m not saying that my casting skills are anything special but I thought I’d throw my two cents into the casting question of, “Who should be cast to play the 2016 Chicago Cubs.”
