WATCH: Gatorade’s New ‘W’ Commercial Will Get You Fired Up For The Cubs Home Opener

This morning, the people at Gatorade released a magnificent commercial involving the Chicago Cubs. The commercial is named ‘W’ and stars the Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber. The 1:00 video captures different areas of Chicago and surrounding suburbs showing their support for the team by, you guessed it — flying the W.

Schwarber’s appearances essentially show him working his ass off in the weight room to get himself in playing shape and if the first six games of the season are any indication of his conditioning, it’s safe to say the weights paid off.

Check it out.

Bryan Bickell Scored His Last NHL Goal In Ultimate Tearjerker Fashion

bryan bickell

Much of Chicago Blackhawks nation was heartbroken upon hearing the news that Bryan Bickell was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It explained a great many things, including his strange decline from near-super stardom following his epic run through the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs. No human should have to deal with such a terrifying disease.

Even so he made his return to the Carolina Hurricanes, allowed to finish out what would be his last season of professional hockey before having to retire. Turns out he may have the gods in his corner for this fight as they helped him go out in style. The Hurricanes had battled the Philadelphia Flyers through three periods and overtime to a shootout situation.

After the Flyers missed their opening attempt, it fell on Bickell to try giving his team the lead. What happened next was jam packed with all the feels.

Bryan Bickell and the good ending

It was exactly the sort of ending Hollywood movies are made of. That goal gave the Hurricanes their 36th victory of the season. The explosion of emotions from his teammates on the bench told the whole story. No doubt many of his former mates in Chicago felt the same way when they saw it.

Bickell will remain one of the all-time fan favorites in Blackhawks history. A hard-hitting wild man with a deadly stick for scoring clutch goals. He had double digit goals three times in a five-year span when he played for Chicago. His one-timer to tie up Game 6 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals will forever be immortalized in hockey history. Part of the greatest 17-second span Hawks fans will ever know.

Hopefully he doesn’t have to stray too far from the game after he’s done playing. Such men are good for the league and he can almost certainly find work.

The Bears Are Eyeing The Next Jordan Reed In Draft

chicago bears evan engram

It’s hard to imagine anybody would be surprised about a Chicago Bears Evan Engram encounter. Tight end remains one of their biggest roster needs despite the recent addition of Dion Sims in free agency. No current options on their depth chart can be considered serious weapons in the short or long-term. Zach Miller is 33 and coming off another injury. Sims has spent most of his career as a blocker. The rest are unproven youngsters.

Engram would represent a significant step up in the talent department. A potential instant threat in the passing game for new quarterback Mike Glennon to exploit. With so many unknowns at wide receiver, it makes perfect sense they’d want to add more credibility. Or hope at the very least. Hence why they’ve decided to meet with the Ole Miss standout privately.

Chicago Bears Evan Engram buzz must increase

The constant buzz around Engram for the past few months is how striking a resemblance he holds to current Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Reed of the Washington Redskins. Both are slightly undersized but also supremely athletic with speed and the ability to beat almost any coverage in the passing game. They are matchup nightmares who can dominate the middle of the field. Here is what one national scout had to say according to NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein.

“Outside of O.J. Howard, I think (Evan) Engram is the best tight end in this draft for what he is going to offer. He’s just like Jordan Reed. He’s going to get open against everyone they put on him and that guy competes, too.”

It’s quite a compliment indeed. Reed has produced over 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns over the past two seasons in Washington. It’s a classic case of linebackers being too slow to keep up with him and safeties not being athletic or big enough to body up on him. Never mind his excellent hands and underrated blocking ability. Engram is very similar in all of those ways. Yet that might not be the scariest part.

He might be even faster.

Reality vs. Fiction

Engram sent a loud and clear message to teams everywhere with his blistering 4.42 time in the 40-yard dash at the scouting combine. Please remember this is a guy who is 6’3″, 234 lbs. That is bananas fast for somebody of his size. GM Ryan Pace is all about speed based on his draft picks over the past two years. Engram fits that bill about as perfectly as anybody at any position in this draft.

So where and when will the Bears start looking at him? There is no question that Engram will be in play for the #36 pick early in the second round. It’s possible he might sneak into the top 32 but typically players like him are classic early Day 2 selections. Really good talents who might be missing just one key attribute. For him it’s size and the strength that goes along with it.

Not that he’ll need much of either. He’ll be too busy blowing by defenders to notice much.

WATCH: Cubs Release Hype Video Just In Time For Championship Banner Ceremony

I feel lucky that I get to be in attendance tomorrow night to watch the Cubs raise their first championship banner since 1908. I don’t know if I’ll be happy, sad, excited, drunk or all of the above when the Cubs finally get to raise that beautiful banner before they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.

Not that fans needed anything else to get anymore excited to watch the Cubs play at Wrigley for the first time in 2017 but the team decided to release this teaser video giving fans a quick glimpse at the banner that will be raised.

And it…..is…..awesome.

Preparing to fly tomorrow.

Get To Know The Bears’ Draft Prospects: Finally, The “Top 4” Quarterbacks

Last week, I wrote about the “other” quarterbacks in the upcoming draft – the ones that may be options in later rounds if the Chicago Bears went in a different direction in the early rounds.

But there’s a chance the Bears will target a quarterback in the first round. After all, getting a young QB of the future is a massive priority for this team, and there are many routes Chicago can take to achieve that goal. They can either take one with the third overall pick that they currently own, trade down from the third spot and pick one at a better “value” spot, or try to trade back into the first round after going with another player with their first pick. Although there are rumors that one of the QB prospects could drop to the second round, I have a feeling that there will be enough desperate teams to trigger a run on all of the signal-callers in the first round itself.

If the Bears are set on taking their future field general early, their targets will be one of the following “top” guys that have been scouted, analyzed, debated, picked apart and put back together again for months now. There is no consensus on who the best prospect is out of Mitchell Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, and DeShone Kizer. Experts agree that they’re the Top 4 in “some” order, but ask five different experts, and each one will give you a different opinion of how the QBs rank. It’s that kind of draft.

But what do we know about these guys? Let’s explore.

There Was A Short Delay During The Cubs Game Because Of A Condom

There’s really nothing more to say about this than the headline. There was a short delay during Sunday’s Chicago Cubs game against the Milwaukee Brewers because of a condom on the field.

All right, go at it, comment your best jokes.

New Detail for Cubs World Series Rings Makes Them Legendary

cubs world series rings

The past few months have been unforgettable for the Chicago Cubs. After over a century of pain and heartbreak, a group of characters banded together to take down the greatest curse in professional sports history. It took 108 years. That’s how many times fans of this beloved team had to watch another baseball franchise hoist the championship trophy.

Now it’s finally their turn, and the players have one last feather to place in their caps: actual Cubs World Series rings. Most people are too busy still celebrating or moving on to the start of the 2017 season. They haven’t bothered to ask the simple yet profound question. What could these rings look like? Considered they will commemorate a piece of incredible history, one would think they should be memorable.

According to recent reports from Buster Olney of ESPN, there is one fine little detail that has been agreed upon. To say it might be one last thumbing of the nose at the curse would be an understatement.

Cubs World Series rings are honoring history

If ever there were something more appropriate, it would take great genius to find. Teams often use the diamond structure of a ring to tell a story. Just look at the intricacy behind the 2016 Cavaliers rings after they won the NBA title.

“In the background of the interlocking logo are 100 diamonds that represent the number of Cavaliers playoff victories in the team’s history to win a championship. Cascading the right and left edges are 46 diamonds (23 per side) which represent the 46 years that Cavs organization has been in existence (1970-2016).”

The Cubs World Series rings, with respect to Cleveland, are even more special. The fact that they are not letting go of how committed the fans have remained despite so many dark years is both parts touching and inspiring. Only a select few many in baseball history will be able to wear that jewelry, which makes them quite a special group. It will be fitting to know that the 108 diamonds wasn’t all about filling space.

It was about honoring history.

Top 10 Moments From The Blackhawks’ 2016-2017 Regular Season

Ryan Hartman

It would be hard to find another Chicago Blackhawks’ season filled with as many memories and milestones as 2016-2017. Of the top 10, it seemed like almost every player had a moment unto themselves that electrified fans or created history. It shouldn’t be a surprise that the Blackhawks had only their second 50 win season in franchise history and led the Western Conference with 109 points.

It was hard to narrow this down to only 10 and impossible to rank. This is merely a list, in somewhat chronological order, of what the Sports Mockery Blackhawks reporters felt were the highlights of the season.

Enjoy!

Marian Hossa’s 500th Goal

Marian Hossa was stuck on 499 goals after the 2015-2016 season. Can you imagine how long that six months felt for a competitor like him?

On October 18th against the Philadelphia Flyers he finally joined the 500 goal club. Hossa was just the fifth player to reach the milestone in the Blackhawks sweater and only the 44th in NHL history.

Bears Urged To Gamble On This Wild Card Free Agent

Would the Chicago Bears sign Michael Floyd? Now there’s a question many fans probably never really thought about. In fact they likely still thought he was employed by the New England Patriots. Understandable since that’s the last place anybody saw the 27-year old wide receiver. However, he is indeed available on the free agent market.

That brings back the initial question. Would or should the Bears consider bringing him aboard? On the surface it may not look necessary. Their current depth chart may not have Alshon Jeffery anymore, but it still seems to have an intriguing mix of young talents.

  • Kevin White
  • Cameron Meredith
  • Markus Wheaton
  • Kendall Wright
  • Rueben Randle
  • Eddie Royal
  • Deonte Thompson
  • Josh Bellamy
  • Daniel Braverman

At the same time few of those players listed are proven. White, Wheaton and Royal are all coming off an injury-plagued 2016 season. Meredith had a minor breakout year but is still young. Randle wasn’t even in the league. Thompson and Bellamy are special teams guys and Braverman spent most of his rookie year on the practice squad.

Should the Bears sign Michael Floyd?

There is no question Floyd brings some baggage with him, but also some serious ability. When he’s on his game he can be a serious playmaker. That is why Gary Davenport of the Bleacher Report believes Chicago should consider signing him. The risk is worth the potential reward.

“Given Michael Floyd’s off-field issues, it’s understandable that he’s yet to find a new home. As ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported in December, Floyd is looking at a multi-game suspension for the DUI arrest that led to his release by the Arizona Cardinals.

However, Floyd is also a big-bodied burner with three 800-yard seasons in five years, including a 1,000-yard campaign in 2013 in which he averaged 16 yards a reception.

Signing Floyd would be risky. But the Bears have plenty of cap space (over $25 million per Spotrac), and the contract could be structured in a way that costs the Bears next to nothing if Floyd makes another misstep.”

Money would not be the issue with Floyd. He’ll likely take any deal at this point since most teams are steering clear. It’s not just the DUI arrest that bothers some people. There are rumors, true or not, that he has issues with work ethic. He’s been labeled as a bit lazy at times, which is a big reason he hasn’t taken off despite his clear talent. Yet when watching plays like this, it’s hard to wonder where those rumors came from.

When he sets his mind to it, Floyd has shown he can be that trustworthy target in key situations. He’s still young and young guys make mistakes. That’s nothing new. Perhaps playing in the shadow of a future Hall of Famer like Larry Fitzgerald was finally too much for him. Understandable. Nobody likes to live with that sort of pressure.

He’d have no problems like that in Chicago. This franchise hasn’t had anything close to a Fitzgerald maybe ever. He would also be closer to home, having been born in St. Paul, Minnesota. Not to mention his old stomping grounds at Notre Dame. Indeed there are plenty of logical reasons for the Bears to sign him.

The big road block of course is the character concerns. GM Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox have put a lot of effort into changing the locker room culture for the Bears. They’ve focused heavily on players with clean backgrounds who are all about football. Floyd doesn’t fit that description. So it would take some convincing.

Nonetheless, it’s an intriguing idea. Perhaps one that might happen depending on how the draft shakes out.

The Private Bears Draft Meetings You Don’t Know About

bears draft meetings

By now the Chicago Bears draft meetings are in full swing. The big day is less than three weeks away. GM Ryan Pace, head coach John Fox and the rest of the team brass know this could be the most important 72-hour event of their careers coming up. After going 3-13 last season, that isn’t a surprise.

The one hope they’re clinging to is how well the 2016 draft class turned out. Stacking another good class on top of that could push this ship in the right direction. Every detail is being mulled over, and that’s why the private meetings are so important. It gives them a chance to get up close and personal with certain players they like.

Most fans have heard the big names mentioned like Jonathan Allen, O.J. Howard, DeShone Kizer, Reuben Foster and Malik Hooker. All of them are possible options for the #3 pick the Bears hold in the first round. So what about the other names that have appeared on the list? The ones casual fans might not know.

Here is some information on all those available.
