Cubs And White Sox Unveil New Specialty Uniforms

South Siders Have Tough Test Coming Up Against Lindor’s Indians

Throughout the first five games of the season (two have been postponed), the White Sox sit at 2-3, good for fourth in the A.L. Central. Aside from an offensive outburst that saw the team put up 11 runs, the offense has been predictably mediocre. Two of the biggest surprises have been the slow start of Tim Anderson, and the torrid start of Avisail Garcia. After a rare rough outing on Opening Day for Jose Quintana, he settled in nicely his last start, only giving up 2 runs, but of course he got zero run support and fell to 0-2.

Now, the White Sox hit the road for the first time, in what should be a very tough test as they visit the reigning A.L. Champion Cleveland Indians.

Probable Pitchers

Game 1 @ 3:10 p.m. — James Shields (1-0) vs. Carlos Carrasco (1-0)

Game 2 @ 5:10 p.m. — Derek Holland (0-1) vs. Danny Salazar (0-0)

Game 3 @ 5:10 p.m. — Miguel Gonzalez (1-0) vs. Josh Tomlin (0-1)

Player To Watch: Avi Garcia

Avi has come out of the gates firing. He currently leads the A.L. in batting average, hitting an incredible .474. It will be interesting to see whether he can keep up his hot start over the next few days. The optimists will say that Avi is finally developing into the player we all thought he could be. The pessimists will say this is just a fluke hot streak.

Time will tell, but it should be noted that he already has 1000+ plate appearances in the MLB. At this point, we pretty much know what we are getting with Avi, and he should cool off in the near future, though I’d definitely love to be wrong.

Prediction

Now that both Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar are fully healthy for the Indians, it will definitely be tough to pull out a series win here. Edwin Encarnacion and Francisco Lindor should wreck havoc on the back end of the White Sox rotation, and overall the pitching matchups just do not work in the White Sox favor here. A series against one of, if not the best teams in the A.L. without a Quintana appearance is going to be a tough one to win.

If Miguel Gonzalez can put together a decent start in the finale against the very average Josh Tomlin, the White Sox might be able to salvage a game. That’s about as good as it should get for the South Siders.

Indians take series 2-1.

The Cubs Are Now The 4th Most Valuable Franchise In MLB

Back in 2009, the Chicago Cubs were sold to the Ricketts’ family for approximately $845 million, which is a record an MLB franchise. At the time, the Ricketts’ were criticized for overpaying for the Cubs, who at the time had no clear path to a winning future. Well, less than a decade has passed and the Cubs’ value has more than tripled.

After a 2016 World Series title victory that snapped the longest championship drought in American sports history, Forbes listed the Cubs as the fourth most valuable franchise in MLB. Coming in at No. 1 is once again the New York Yankees, who are valued at a jaw-dropping $3.7 billion.

Here’s the top-five in the Forbes list, with the Cubs ranking fourth at $2.675 billion.

  • New York Yankees – $3.7 billion
  • Los Angeles Dodgers – $2.75 billion
  • Boston Red Sox – $2.7 billion
  • Chicago Cubs – $2.675 billion
  • San Francisco Giants – $2.65 billion

So yeah, nice little investment for the Ricketts’ family. Since the acquisition of the Cubs, Wrigley Field and a share of CSN Chicago, Forbes projects the value of the franchise increasing by more than 180 percent.

During the previous seven years the Ricketts have renovated Wrigley Field and before their banner raising night during their home opener on Monday the new Park at Wrigley was unveiled. Couple the business side with the baseball operations led by Theo Epstein and the Cubs are now the envy of MLB, featuring two of the most popular players in the sport in Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo.

It’s no surprise the value has increased as much as it have and that’s not going to stop anytime soon because there are more renovations and features coming to and around Wrigley Field.

According to Forbes, the average MLB franchise is worth $1.54 billion, up 19 percent from last year. The Chicago White Sox are valued at $1.35 billion, ranking 15th in MLB.

Top Expert Insists This Major Bears Draft Rumor Isn’t Dead Yet

bears mitch trubisky

The Chicago Bears draft rumor mill is spinning hotter than ever these days. Not a surprise considering the big day is just shy of two weeks away. It will mark the third draft of the Ryan Pace era, one that feature the highest pick Chicago has held since 1972. No doubt the biggest opportunity this franchise may get to land a potential superstar for their young, developing roster.

For the longest time there was widespread belief that the team might actually consider taking a quarterback at that spot. This despite warning from several analysts that the 2017 class is too raw and inexperienced to warrant that kind of investment. Over time the general consensus is that Chicago will likely take the best available defensive player on the board.

Will it be Jonathan Allen, or Jamal Adams, or Marshon Lattimore? The names keep shifting but have stayed on that side of the ball for the past couple weeks in most mock draft. Save for the one by Dane Brugler. The draft expert for CBS Sports remains a big believer in the idea the Bears will take their QB early, and not because it’s a hunch.

The Bears draft rumor that won’t die

Indeed the connection between the Bears and Mitch Trubisky is something that goes back a few months. Walter Football indicated Chicago “loved” him. Constant whispers out of the draft community are he is head and shoulders above the other quarterbacks in this class. That is certainly reflected in many rankings. His 6.5 rating on NFL.com is .6 points higher than the next closest on the list (Deshaun Watson 5.9).

That’s a pretty significant gap. Why? In spite of the obvious concerns with his lack of experience (started just 13 games at UNC) he displayed the most characteristics of a pro-ready quarterback during that time. Most notably with his presence within the pocket, footwork and ability to work through his progressions. The arm is solid, his accuracy and ball placement are reliable and he’s got decent size and good mobility.

So why would the Bears be compelled to take him at #3 overall despite the warning that it would be a big reach? Competition.

QB needy teams are plentiful

Even though the quarterback class of 2017 may be perceived as unprepared, their talent is not in question. Given the importance of the position, the odds are teams will still willingly take the risk in the hopes they can develop the young passers for the pro level. It’s been done before. Besides, the Bears face the added problem of knowing several teams that need a quarterback will be picking after them in the first round.

Those teams include the Jets, Bills, Saints, Cardinals, Giants, Texans, Chiefs and Steelers. All either have glaring needs at the position or soon will due to age concerns with their current starters. This doesn’t even include the Browns and 49ers who pick ahead of the Bears early in the second round. Thus GM Ryan Pace is backed into a corner.

He either takes his preferred quarterback earlier than he probably should be taken, or he waits until the second round. By which point a limited field of options could be picked clean. Not the easiest decision to make by any stretch. Pace has stuck by his Best Player Available moniker since he took over two years. So the question becomes how highly does he regard Trubisky?

Impossible to know for sure. The Bears were barely represented at his pro day a few weeks ago. Then again they quietly conducted a private workout with him. So it’s anybody’s guess. Still, the fact remains that he is very much in play at the #3 pick.

Fans Went Wild For David Ross During Last Night’s Rain Delay

Last night marked the 11th straight home opener that I’ve been to since I moved to Chicago in 2006 and it was full of memories that will last a lifetime. I was lucky enough to get to witness the Cubs raise three championship banners, I saw the first walk-off win of 2017, and I got a chance to see those SICK gold uniforms in person.

All of those things were put on hold around 6 pm when the Cubs announced that the banner raising ceremony would be delayed due to some impending rain. I’ve waited my entire life to get the chance to watch the Cubs raise a championship banner so I was absolutely fine with waiting another hour or so before the ceremonies started.

As I was sitting in the bleachers with my buddy, a light rain started to fall. I didn’t want to lose my seat five rows up from the basket in left field so like a couple of idiots, we decided to stay put and continue to drink.

Much to my surprise, our conversation (and drinking) were interrupted by a jumbo-tron version of “Dancing With The Stars” starring none other than former Cub, David Ross.

I’ll admit, at the time I thought it was on tape delay or possibly a former episode from earlier in the season so I didn’t pay much attention to it. However, the more I looked around at my fellow bleacher mates, I could tell that what they were watching was something they hadn’t seen before. I didn’t find out until later that night that the Cubs decided to show it live for the Wrigley faithful bravely waiting out the rain delay.

David Ross may have had his hand in getting the Cubs to show his new dance routine.

We watched Ross hop and skip around the dance floor but the highlight of the night was when the judges began to give their opinions on Ross’ routine. I have no idea what the judges names are or what they exactly do but what I do know is when they didn’t give Ross exemplary remarks, Cubs fans began to boo and scream at the judges like it was part of the actual game they paid money to see.

When one of the judges said Ross was “skipping too much,” a grown man behind me turned to the video board and screamed,

“SHUT THE HELL UP BUDDY! WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT DANCING!?”

Seriously.

Even the Cubs players couldn’t take their eyes off of the left field video board.

As I was listening to people boo and cheer for Ross, it dawned on me — they’re showing “Dancing With The Stars” on the fucking video board at Wrigley Field.

Now THAT’S when you know that you’ve been fully embraced by Cubs fans.

2017 Chicago Cubs Opening Night Walk-Up Music

Last night, the Chicago Cubs opened their 2017 season at Wrigley Field in dramatic fashion. After blowing a two-run lead late in the game, the Cubs rebounded and eventually went on to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 thanks to an Anthony Rizzo walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

What a great way to start 2017.

Besides watching the team raise their third championship banner last night, part of my excitement was getting a chance to hear the players walk-up music for the first time in 2017.

Last year, I wrote a similar article and was able to get every single player’s walk-up music besides Addison Russell’s due to me possibly being a bit intoxicated. I’m happy to report that this year I was able to get each player’s music of choice while simultaneously getting hammered.

Impressive, I know.

Here’s the list with a link to each song.

Kyle Schwarber

Thuggish Ruggish Bone – Bone Thugs-n-Harmony

Kris Bryant

Warm It Up – Kris Kross

Anthony Rizzo

Intoxicated – Martin Solveig

(I’m sorry but this song is just awesome)

Ben Zobrist

Benny and the Jets – Julianna Zobrist

Addison Russell

Can’t Tell Me Nothing – Kanye West

Willson Contreras

El Amante – Nicky Jam

Jason Heyward

This Girl – Kungs & Cookin’ On 3 Burners (a little foggy on this one but here was his back-up just in case)

Outlet- Desiigner

Javier Baez

Informer – Snow

Jon Lester

Barefoot Blue Jean Night – Jake Owen

*Note: A majority of the players switched up their songs before each at-bat but my phone battery decided it didn’t want to cooperate with me last night.

I swear I wasn’t too drunk.

Kris Bryant Is Crushing Baseballs Into The Chicago River Today

I never really thought I’d want to watch the reigning NL MVP murder baseballs into the historic Chicago River but since the opportunity has presented itself — why not?

Apparently hitting baseballs out of stadiums across the nation wasn’t good enough for Bryant so he’s taking his home run hitting talents downtown to the banks of the Chicago River at noon today.

Bryant will take his regular Wrigley batting practice from his Cubs coaches but obviously instead of hitting the ball onto Sheffield or Waveland avenue, these poor baseballs will be screaming into the river. For those of you who are ready to put the wet suit on and dive in to get a souvenir — don’t. The Urban Kayak and Harbor Safety Committee will be on hand to help clean the river of all the baseballs.

If you’re interested in attending (or watching online), the details are below.

Date: Tuesday, April 11

Location: 444 W. Lake Street (www.chicagoriverpoint.com)

Time: Noon (fans recommended to arrive by 11 am)

If you can’t make it downtown to watch in person, the BP will be shown via Facebook Live at facebook.com/cubs.

This should be a pretty cool event to check out!

Cubs Win Home Opener On Anthony Rizzo’s Walk Off Single

Send those Chicago Cubs fans home happy, Anthony Rizzo!

No better time for Rizzo to get his first RBI of the season, as the Cubs win 3-2 over the Los Angeles Dodgers to get the victory in their home opener at Wrigley Field.

A great finish to a banner night at the home of the World Series champs.

The Bears Are Getting Creative In Search For Tight End Help

Kansas State University has really been kind to Chicago lately. After all it may have produced their next great center in Cody Whitehair, a second round pick from 2016. However, there is another name that could be drawing intrigue soon enough. Will the Bears sign D.J. Johnson? Hang on, let’s back up a second. Don’t know who that is? Not surprising since the young man isn’t a football player for that college.

He is in fact a power forward for the K-State basketball team. That’s right. His name was made on the hardcourt, not the gridiron. During his senior year he was a steady presence for them in the paint averaging 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He always saved some of his best performances for big games including two against #3 ranked Kansas and one in the South Region championship tournament against Wake Forest.

With his basketball career drawing to a close though, his future is in question. It would seem the Bears have plans in mind.

Cubs Raise World Series Banner At Wrigley Field

The moment all Chicago Cubs fans have been waiting for their entire lives happened on Monday night at Wrigley Field, as the 2016 World Series banner went up.

Then, Anthony Rizzo led the Cubs back on the field, hoisting the World Series trophy inside Wrigley Field for the first time in franchise history.

Soak in Cubs fans, this is why we watch.
