Can anybody remember the last time the Chicago Bears drafted top 5 quarterback? It’s a fun trivia question for casual fans. Most who don’t know will smack their heads upon hearing the answer. It was none other than Jim McMahon back in 1982. The team took the standout from BYU with the fifth overall pick that year. The first under new head coach Mike Ditka.

McMahon would be one of the more controversial players of the decade, but also one of the best. He went 46-15 in Chicago during his run, helping the franchise to win its first Super Bowl in 1985. He’s also the last quarterback to make a Pro Bowl for them. In all a pretty good return on such an important pick.

Over the past 35 years though the Bears have had three other opportunities to get themselves a top five QB and failed to pull the trigger. In 1998 and 2003 they didn’t pull the trigger because the options available were poor. However, the streak should’ve ended in 2005 when they had Aaron Rodgers on the board with their #4 pick. They took Cedric Benson instead.

So the streak continues. Want to feel old? Here are a bunch of things that were popular in 1982 when the Bears made that pick.

The NBA Just Punished Rajon Rondo For His Tripping Incident

rajon rondo

Rajon Rondo is having a rough week. Just when it seemed like he was ready to regain his standing among the best point guards in the NBA, it all went wrong. He was outstanding for the Chicago Bulls in Games 1 and 2, almost averaging a triple double. Then news dropped that he’d fractured his right thumb. An injury that could keep him out a couple weeks.

If that weren’t bad enough, it got worse when cameras caught him in Game 3 extending his leg on the bench as Jae Crowder was running down the sideline. It looked to the casual viewer like Rondo was trying to trip him. An accusation he later denied.

Lighter pockets

Be that as it may, Rondo didn’t convince the NBA league office. For the incident they decided to slap him with a significant fine according to ESPN.

Chicago Bulls point guard Rajon Rondo was fined $25,000 for sticking out his leg from the bench in an attempt to trip Boston Celtics forward Jae Crowder on Friday.

NBA vice president of basketball operations Kiki VanDeWeghe announced the fine.

Rondo said after the game Friday that he was not trying to trip the Celtics player.

“When you tear an ACL, your legs get stiff on you every once in a while,” Rondo said. “I stretched my leg out. I also do that throughout the game. I guess he was so deep into our bench, it looked maybe whatever may have happened.”

It may not sound like a lot in the context of an NBA salary, but there is no doubt this was a warning to Rondo. For all his brilliance on the court, the man has a history of being unpredictable and reckless when he’s frustrated. Possibly not being able to finish a series he was playing so well in can rank right near the top in those situations. They want him to behave and taking money from his pocket is a good way to do that.

Cubs Prospect Is Already Landing Endorsement Deals

There are very few players within the Cubs organization that are more intriguing than Ian Happ. He had a monster Spring which saw him hit .383, jack five home runs in 29 games which led to an astounding 1.191 OPS.

Happ was sent to AAA Iowa to start the season where the Iowa Cubs have begun to move him around the diamond defensively to create some versatility in the 22-year-old budding star. He has already played second base and all three outfield spots for Iowa, with the idea that he might also work out at third base to boost his versatility and marketability.

With an apparent logjam in the outfield and in the middle infield in Chicago, it’s still unclear where Happ fits into the big picture for the Chicago Cubs. However, GM Jed Hoyer is well aware that we could see Happ sooner rather than later.

“Whenever you’re in AAA, you’re always a call away. Sometimes it happens quicker than you think. We never expected [Addison Russell] would be up in April of [2015], and I feel like Willson [Contreras] last year, if you asked me in spring training if he’d be up in June, I probably would have thought it would be more like a September call-up. You never know.”

Happ is helping his case as he’s already begun to destroy AAA pitching in Iowa. Sports Mockery’s Sean Sears pointed out that Happ’s offensive production has begun to boost his value in the trade market which will be very interesting to see how it shakes out this summer.

Happ’s offensive production (and the fact he may be a big part of the Chicago Cubs’ future) has recently landed him his a big time endorsement deal with Waltham Watches.

Happ isn’t the only Cubs player to be endorsed by Waltham however. Kyle Schwarber is also endorsed by the company as well.

Safe to say that the people at Waltham know a good baseball player when they see one.

History Shows The Entire Bears 2017 Season Hinges On Opening Day

The Chicago Bears 2017 season, like most others, is one of high hopes. Even with the team coming off a 3-13 clunker last year there is a belief that another solid draft could put this roster in position to really make things happen. Not just flash good performances but actually win games. Something the young group hasn’t learned how to do yet.

Opening day draws ever closer. Even as the draft is about to begin, fans already have one eye turned towards September. Will the Bears be ready for the challenge? Can they get off to a hot start? The saying always goes that it doesn’t matter how they start but how they finish. What most people don’t realize is when it comes to this team, the start is everything.

Bears fans have no idea how important the first game has become in recent years for this team. Consistently each year for the past decade the results of that contest would set the tone for the year. If the Bears won the game, they ended up finishing the season with a record of 8-8 or better. If they lost, it would be a record of 7-9 or worse.

It’s not a joke. Here is every season since 2006, the result of the opening game and what the final record was that year.

  • 2016:  Loss (3-13)
  • 2015:  Loss (6-10)
  • 2014:  Loss (5-11)
  • 2013:  Win (8-8)
  • 2012:  Win (10-6)
  • 2011:  Win (8-8)
  • 2010:  Win (11-5)
  • 2009:  Loss (7-9)
  • 2008:  Win (9-7)
  • 2007:  Loss (7-9)
  • 2006:  Win (13-3)

Bears 2017 season rests on topping the NFC champions

That’s is not a misprint. In the past 11 seasons the result of the opening day game for the Chicago Bears has determined the success or failure of that season. A thought that becomes even scarier knowing what lay ahead. This young team, still trying to find an identity will being taking on the reigning NFC champion Atlanta Falcons.

A team that had the best offense in football last year, went 12-4 and has the current MVP at quarterback in Matt Ryan. One that beat the Green Bay Packers twice in the same year. Considering the Bears have beaten the Packers just four times in the Aaron Rodgers era, that is not a comforting realization.

Sure a lot can happen in an NFL season and there have been instances where the Bears have overcome a week one loss to reach the playoffs. It’s just that it hasn’t happened for a long time. This is a trend the Bears haven’t been able to escape. It’s hard to believe this team can survive getting off to slow start if only because they’ve already failed twice to do so under John Fox.

Ryan Pace Could Luck Out Again By Snagging Brand New Free Agent

Last year Bears GM Ryan Pace took advantage of a stroke of good fortune when the Green Bay Packer released Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton. Chicago was his first visit and they made sure he never got out of the building. That coincidence of timing allowed them to forge one of the two or three best interior offensive line trios in the NFL along with Kyle Long and Cody Whitehair.

The moral of the story? Always be prepared for the possibility that team might make a surprise cut at a position that could really help your roster. It seems that could be happening again. Adam Schefter recently broke the news that the Kansas City Chiefs were cutting defensive end Jaye Howard in order to save over $2 million in guarantees they would’ve had to pay otherwise.

Chicago has serious depth questions along their defensive line, not to mention a noticeable hole at the end spot opposite Akiem Hicks. Howard was a free agent target for the Bears last year before he chose to return to Kansas City. In 2015 he had 57 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Unfortunately he missed eight games in 2016 with injury and regressed.

A Bears Jaye Howard reunion could help both parties

It’s important to remember that Howard is 28-years old. He doesn’t turn 29 until late December. Presuming good health he should have three or four solid seasons left in him. If the Bears could get him back near the level he was two years ago, that would be a tremendous boost for an already pretty good front seven. Howard showed on several occasions that he could be a dynamic presence up front.

Odds are he won’t cost near what he would’ve last season. Thus Pace would be getting a player who is still relatively young and at a much more affordable price. They run a 3-4 scheme just like Kansas City does too. Everything lines up for this to happen. To top it off, it would add even more flexibility for Chicago going into the draft that is right around the corner. There really isn’t a downside to consider. Save maybe for the small competition they may encounter for his services.

Blackhawks’ Bowman Calls Season ‘Unacceptable’ And Says ‘There Will Be Change’

The Chicago Blackhawks wrapped up the regular season with a division title and the best record in the Western Conference. It was also only the second time in franchise history that a team reached the 50 win mark. Being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Nashville Predators was not expected.

Disappointment is on everyone’s mind, especially General Manager Stan Bowman. It was locker room cleanout day on what should have been game 5 of their opening round series. Bowman who was visibly upset said, “I am completely, completely disappointed, it is unacceptable to be where we are today.”

This is how the general manager put it himself, “I am frustrated, I am angry, this was a tough, tough loss for us all to take. Standing here April 22 is not the way we expected our season to end. It is a completely failure when you measure it against the expectations that we have for ourselves. We did not come even close to reaching the standard we have set over the years here. And that is unacceptable. Any successes that we did experience this year are completely overshadowed by the abrupt ending to our season. It is not close to good enough for anybody. I think it is times like now to take a look in the mirror and face facts. And when you do that you look at accountability and that starts with me. I need to be better. There is no doubt about it. I am going to take a look at all things and I can promise you I will be better. Top to bottom we need more. This is unacceptable to be where we are today. There will be change moving forward. Change comes in many different ways. So the specifics of how we are going to change things into next year are not really meant for this forum. But I can promise you we need to be better. Joel is our head coach. he will continue to be our head coach. Joel and I are going to work together to make sure this never happens again.”

Bowman took accountability for the Blackhawks early exit and gave a vote of confidence to coach Joel Quenneville returning next year. He also vowed that there will be change in the off-season.

The word “unacceptable” was used three times through his short one minute and 57 second address to the media and he is of course correct. The Blackhawks have been eliminated from the playoffs in the first round the last two seasons. This season was the first time in any major sport that a number one seed was swept by an eight seed.

While Bowman gave no insight on the moves that the team will make, they may be drastic. The organization is loaded with heavy contracts and many of which have no movement clauses built into them. These may be hard to move but it’s likely a core player or fan favorite will be gone, not unlike years past. Whatever happens, you know Bowman will be busy this off-season to avoid the disappointment of the last two seasons.

WATCH: The Bryzzo Souvenir Co. Now Has A Hilarious New Jingle

Now that the Bryzzo Souvenir company has expanded their staff, dealt with a new employee, and gave their new intern a hard time, the founders of the company decided to call in a big name to give the company a custom jingle.

Who better to create that jingle than life-long Cubs fan (and front man of Pearl Jam), Eddie Vedder.

This is great.

Jason Heyward Is Still Killing Baseballs, Smacks A 3-Run HR

Yeah, Jason Heyward is back.

He’s hitting the ball hard and now Heyward is hitting them out of the ballpark. After a long home run on Friday, Heyward smashed another bomb against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. The three-run blast gave the Cubs an 11-5 lead.

This was his second home run of the season after not hitting two home runs in 2016 until June. Heyward keeps hitting rockets and you bet the rest of baseball is shaking in fear.

Latest QB Rumors Hint This Bears Dream Draft Scenario May Come True

bears dream draft scenario

What is the Chicago Bears dream draft scenario for 2017? There will be varying opinions on that subject matter but the majority will agree on a singular point. That being if Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett somehow fell to them at the #3 overall pick. Think about it. The idea of pairing a once-in-a-generation talent in Garrett opposite Leonard Floyd. That is the sort of setup most defensive coordinators write on their Christmas lists every year.

It’s not every day that the best talent in a draft class falls outside the top two picks. Yet rumors are hinting at the possibility in a big way. Already there are prominent experts stating the Cleveland Browns might pass on Garrett in favor of getting their top quarterback of choice. Most believe that to be Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina.

Now Greg Gabriel, a former Bears scout and current draft expert for CBS Sports is hearing the San Francisco 49ers have heavy interest in Clemson standout Deshaun Watson.

This Bears dream draft scenario can’t be true….could it?

Now it’s important to remember that the draft is just five days away. This is the peak time of year where rumors fly and most of them aren’t true. This could easily be a ruse by the 49ers to drive up interest in trading for their #2 pick. At the same time there are reasons to believe some truth is connected to this.

For one sources close to the Browns continue to insist the team is very much considering Trubisky at #1 overall. Apparently many in the upper hierarchy don’t want to risk missing out on him. Not with the 49ers, Bears, and Jets all in the immediate vicinity to pounce. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com explained.

“Mitch Trubisky is still under serious consideration by the Browns at No. 1, league sources tell cleveland.com.

Despite that Browns head of football operations Sashi Brown gave strong vibes during his pre-draft press conference Wednesday that the Browns have zeroed in on Myles Garrett, they’re still strongly considering taking Trubisky there, sources say.”

That leaves San Francisco. Would they really consider taking Watson over Garrett? It sounds absurd to most draft fans, but one can understand their thinking. Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley are their two current QBs on the roster. Both of them contributed to the Bears going 3-13 last season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is an offensive mastermind. He builds his schemes around a talented quarterback just like he did in Atlanta.

With the depth of the 2017 class in serious question, it would make sense he’d want to get a top talent rather than wait until the second round. Odds are the best options will be long picked clean by then.

History proves it’s possible

There is also the unavoidable truth of history backing this up. Since 1970 there have been seven separate occasions where a quarterback went in the first two picks of the draft. Three of those instances have taken place in the past five years including 2012, 2015 and 2016. Of course people will say those pairs were more talented but is that true? Can anybody say with utmost honest that Robert Griffin III and Jared Goff were anymore worthy of going in the top two picks than Watson?

It’s important to remember that this idea that the 2017 QB class is bad was started and fanned by the media. Rumors persist that the same is not true for many executives and coaches among teams. They feel it’s an underrated group that just lacks some experience and polish. Not talent. That’s key.

Bottom line is everything hinges on what the Browns do at #1. If they indeed throw off everybody by taking Trubisky, it may just create the perfect storm to land an elite pass rusher in the laps of Ryan Pace and John Fox.

Willson Contreras Crushes A Grand Slam!

What a start to Saturday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds? After the first inning the Reds led 4-3 and after the top of the second inning the Cubs took a 7-4 lead.

Anthony Rizzo and Joey Votto each hit three-run home runs in the first, but then Willson Contreras cranked a grand slam to left-center field in the second inning to put the Cubs back on top.

Cody Reed did not have the best of starts for the Reds, giving up seven earned runs in just two innings.

Here’s Rizzo’s home run.

Good ole fashioned slugfest in Cincinnati today.
