Patrick Kane And Friends To Play Charity Game Benefiting Special Olympics

On Saturday August 5, former NHL players, Blackhawks past and present as well as local personalities will participate in a hockey game to benefit Special Olympics Chicago. The Chicago Hockey Charity Classic will take place at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva at 3pm.

The event was set up by Topher Scott who grew up in the hockey community and has two brothers with special needs. Scott who has already helped raise over $50,000 said, “It’s a cause near and dear to my heart.” The goal is to sell out the 3,000 seat arena and raise over $100,000 in total. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here, but hurry because they are going fast.

Among the notable names participating in the game are Patrick Kane, Ed Olczyk and Vinnie Hinostroza. Hinostroza who is a Chicagoland native reminisced about going to Marklan Home as a kid. It’s a home for kids with special needs and he feels that they deserve opportunities like everyone else.

Hinostroza went on to say, “Being able to play for the Hawks last year and now being able to grow the game and grow charities and help out whatever way I can, it’s what I want to do. Guys always did that when I was younger. I’ve learned from the best and I just wanted to help give back.”

Seeing players of this caliber is inspiring and the event is sure to be fun and bring a lot of smiles to people’s faces. For a full list of attendees and more information please check the flyer below. If you’re unable to attend but would still like to donate to the Chicago Hockey Charity Classic you can do so here. Mark Sanchez Proves Why He’s the Perfect Mitch Trubisky Mentor

mark sanchez bears

A lot of people panned the idea when it first happened. What could a Mark Sanchez Bears connection possibly accomplish? Some laughed. Others derided. Chicago was no place for a journeyman backup with his best days long behind him, right? The problem is people view every quarterback signing the same way: as if he’s a potential starter.

That was never the case with Sanchez. His addition to the roster was centered around two factors. The first being experienced depth at the backup spots. Second? Providing much-needed advice and direction for Mitch Trubisky. Sure Mike Glennon is included as well but he’s already got NFL starting experience. Sanchez can and should be much more beneficial to Bears’ prized new rookie.

Naturally some will think that’s overblown. There’s only so much Sanchez can do. The role of mentor in the NFL is a nice, little fantasy. That is until one hears the man himself explain why he can be good at it.

Mark Sanchez Bears tenure validated with one statement

For the first time Sanchez appeared in front of reports following the first practice of training camp. Having spent years in front of the New York, Philadelphia and Dallas media it was easy to see why he looked so comfortable. The man wasted no time providing clear proof that he knows and is qualified for the job asked of him.

“Oh, he’s great. He’s great,” Sanchez said. “The best compliment you can give a rookie is not having to tell him to shut up. Right? Just keep your head down and work, and that’s really been his mentality. And that’s huge. That’s not easy. Especially not coming from where he’s come from and the status you build as a college player. And then the team trades up and drafts you. All of those things. You start to feel a little bit of that. And people are telling you a lot of that. And a lot of guys come in here believing all of that. Really, it’s right to the bottom. Whether you’re starting or not.”

Sanchez can help Trubisky if it’s accepted

It’s easy to forget that few people understand what Trubisky is feeling more than Sanchez. Not only was he a top five draft pick back in 2009. He also had the distinction of be traded up for. The New York Jets gave up a second first round pick, a second round pick and three players to move up and draft him that year. That’s considerably more than what the Bears surrendered for Trubisky. So Sanchez understands the added pressure that brings.

He can provide critical advice on how to deal with it. Not only from the successful ways he did back then but also the ways he failed to. Trubisky has already shown based on multiple accounts that he’s ready and willing to learn. He wants to be great. That much is reflected in the work ethic. People can say what they want about Sanchez, but he’s a smart football player. If Trubisky accepts his help, the odds of him having NFL success will go up.

Kyle Schwarber Demolishes The South Side With 2 Huge Home Runs

Kyle Schwarber, have a night!

As expected the Chicago Cubs hammered the White Sox again on Thursday and Kyle Schwarber led the way with two huge home runs on the South Side. The Cubs DH also added an RBI-triple, as the big lefty finished the night with four RBIs.

The best sign of all is that Schwarber continues to hit for power to left field. He did that twice with a triple off the wall and his first dinger of the game.

Then, Schwarber hit a moonshot to right field in the eighth inning.

So beautiful.

Hawk Harrelson Is Busy Being An Idiot Once Again

I actually think Hawk Harrelson loves this because he’s seeing his name in headlines again. The Chicago White Sox announcer is having himself one hell of a week doing play-by-play for the crosstown series against the Cubs and he had another gem on Thursday night.

So after feuding with John Lackey, more like a grumpy old man yelling to no one, hoping someone will hear him, Hawk blessed us with this lovely piece of game calling.

On Thursday, Kris Bryant hit a fly ball to center field that drove in Albert Almora Jr. from third base. Reminder, Kris Bryant, the 2016 MVP, World Series champion, one of the most recognizable athletes in the city, also wearing a jersey with his name written in bright red letters, hit the ball.

According to Hawk, Ben Zobrist got the job done.

And no, Hawk wasn’t talking about Zobrist getting Almora over from second to third base because he had already said that Zobrist got it done when the Cubs hitter hit a ground ball to Yoan Moncada before Bryant had the sac-fly.

Hawk, keep being you and keeping giving me hilarious shit to share on the Internet.

Kevin White Overcame Early Rust With Strong First Practice

kevin white bears

The Kevin White Bears era is entering it’s most critical stage now. Opinions on him are not optimistic at this point. Most feel playing just four games in two years thanks to two serious leg injuries has robbed him of his best opportunities to become the possible star Chicago hoped he’d be. It’s little wonder he seemed flustered when asked about it. White knows better than anybody how loud those “bust” chants are getting.

At the same time he still has a job to do. It’s not over yet. There is still time for him to realize his dream and the teams’ expectations of him. Of course staying healthy is critical. He’s never going to get better unless he’s playing actual games. Another setback would all but kill what little momentum he had left.

So that leaves the million dollar question. Does he still have what it takes?

Kevin White Bears renaissance off to decent start

Well the good news is White got out of the first practice injury-free. That is something. Beyond that it was a predictable mixed bag. Some fans were annoyed with him, mostly due to his dropping two passes during team drills. A fact hammered home by Adam Hoge of WGN about the offenses’ inconsistency.

“The offense dropped too many passes on Day 1. Kevin White had two drops, while rookie running back Tarik Cohen and wide receiver Markus Wheaton each dropped one too.”

At the same time it wasn’t like the day was a total bust. For a man who has played just four games in two calendar years, he more than held his own with some quality catches. He even showcased some of that burst that made him so attractive in the draft. If he can channel that into more improved route running, then the Bears are in business.

One thing that’s not being mentioned as well is the change in the quarterback situation. No one ever denied Jay Cutler was talented. At the same time they did question his leadership. It never felt like he and White got off on the right foot, on or off the field. In the case of both Mike Glennon and Mitch Trubisky, it’s the complete opposite.

White has spent significant time with both and speaks highly of their attitudes and motivational skill. Their encouragement could be a small but no less key asset in helping his career get back on track.

REPORT: Cubs Have Considered Francisco Liriano As Possible Trade Target

The Chicago Cubs have reportedly considered trading for Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Francisco Liriano, according to Ken Rosenthal.

The 33-year-old lefty is a free agent after this season.

Mitch Trubisky Lit Up His First Bears Training Camp Practice

mitch trubisky training camp

The Mitch Trubisky training camp buzz is off and running. Now before going any further it is acknowledged that one practice does not an NFL career make. There will be different, worse days. It’s just part of being a quarterback. Nonetheless, first impressions can mean a lot. In that regard the #2 overall pick made sure he came prepared for his first salvo in the Bears quarterback battle.

Things started out odd with the practice start being moved up due to inclement weather projections. Trubisky didn’t seem to mind. Based on multiple accounts the quarterback was sharp throughout the drills. Routinely he was able to fit the ball in tight windows on both short and long passes. It’s not like the defense was making it easy either.

In the end the rookie looked like he belonged out there.

Mitch Trubisky training camp progress about to get serious

It’s best to think of this first practice as the pop quiz. The team just got going and were running around in shorts. No doubt people want to see how Trubisky fairs when the pads go on. He also got his fill against largely depth players at second or third string positions. The coaches are likely to shift him up against the starters at some point.

Suffice to say there is still plenty of prove to do. At the same time there hasn’t been this level of positive buzz about a quarterback in training camp for years. Jay Cutler would have streaks of solid play but always killed the enthusiasm with some ugly interceptions. A perfect reflection of his actual career.

Perhaps the same will hold true for Trubisky. In that case it’s hard not to feel excited about these early impressions. It only makes you want to see more. To see if he can do it again.

Martellus Bennett Got Himself Locked Out of Packers Dorm on First Night

The Martellus Bennett Packers experience isn’t off to the greatest start. After winning a Super Bowl with New England, the former Bears tight end no doubt believes he’ll get a chance to do the same in Green Bay. He represents the biggest free agent addition the Packers have made in years. As big as Julius Peppers was. The fact he played for Chicago is just icing on the cake.

Certainly hasn’t made him any more popular since leaving Chicago. That’s why what happened to him his very first day at training camp was hilarious. Like everybody else Bennett reported and planned to settle into his dorm room. The problem was the care-free tight end didn’t bother to let anybody know when he’d arrive.

What happened next according to NFL.com and the man himself? Probably one of the more uncomfortable nights of sleep he’s had in a long time.

Martellus Bennett Packers stint begins with a bad omen

“And so it was that Bennett found himself locked out of the entrance to his dorm at St. Norbert College. Bennett couldn’t get to his assigned room, but he did have access — somewhat surprisingly — to the Packers locker room.

The veteran tight end got himself settled for an uncomfortable night of sleep on the floor … but not before hopping on social media to share his tale of woe. This is how things work now.”

As a human being it’s easy to have some sympathy for Bennett. Nobody likes to get locked out of anything. The place you’re supposed to sleep being at the top of the list. At the same time, given some of the headaches he’s brought and will bring the Bears it feels much better to just sit back and have a laugh at his expense.

Maybe this will teach him to be more communicative in the future. Showing up when you want may be good for parties. Not so much for a thoroughly mapped out training camp schedule.

White Sox Yoan Moncada Hits His First MLB Home Run

Chicago White Sox fans got something to cheer for on Wednesday night, when Yoan Moncada launched his first MLB home run. The solo home run came in the seventh inning, connecting on an 0-2 breaking ball from Jake Arrieta.

Moncada showing off that power to the opposite field.

And the rookie got the silent treatment in the dugout after his first Major League dinger.

Stay excited White Sox fans, you’ll be seeing a lot more of that from Moncada.

Seth Beer Might Not Be The White Sox Pick Next June

Now that virtually every trade piece the White Sox had is gone, they are destined to lose an absurd amount of games the next two months. After yesterday’s loss against the Cubs, the White Sox have now lost 10 of 11 and are right in the thick of things for not only drafting top three, but No. 1 overall. Furthermore, the White Sox just traded their last legitimate bullpen piece in Anthony Swarzak to the Milwaukee Brewers. Even if the White Sox bats come to life down the stretch, it will be incredibly difficult for them to hold onto a lead in any given game.

The name linked to the White Sox for the past year has been Clemson Sophomore Seth Beer. Clearly the best power bat in the 2018 draft, Beer exploded onto the scene last year, winning Freshman of the Year, as well as other numerous awards. Scouts have Beer going anywhere in the 5-10 range because his defense is poor, and he might end up being a DH. If the White Sox feel the same way, they more than likely won’t reach for a player like that with the No. 1 spot. If the White Sox do end up picking third, then they could potentially draft Beer. But if the White Sox slip into the top two, I wouldn’t count on it.

So If Not Beer, Then Who?

Fear not White Sox fans, while Beer might not be as likely an option as he once was, there are still a plethora of studs the White Sox could select should they pick No. 1 or No. 2. The top two prospects all seem to be agreed upon among scouts nationwide, with a few different opinions on who could go No. 3.

1) Brady Singer – RHP, Florida

For everyone immediately freaking out that the White Sox need bats, I quote Aaron Rodgers: R-E-L-A-X. First of all, take a look at the White Sox prospect page. Inside their respective top 10, there are 5 pitchers and 5 batters. Obviously that will change in the near future once Yoan Moncada graduates from the pipeline, but the balance is still there. There’s also the fact that Brady Singer is the real deal. Standing at 6’5, 195, Singer has a great build for a pitcher. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot and works with a fastball/slider combo with his changeup still developing. Singer’s fastball sits in the mid-90’s but comes with serious arm side run, making it incredibly difficult for opposing batters to barrel the ball. Singer pairs his fastball with a slider that misses bats regularly. However, the thing that stands out most with Singer is that HE THROWS STRIKES. Singer will straight up pound the zone over and over. Something that cannot really be said with the current White Sox pitching prospects. He will also add more velocity as he matures. Many scouts have Singer as the early pick to go No. 1, and it isn’t by accident.

2) Brice Turang – SS, Santiago High School, (CA)

Turang is the top rated high school player in the country at the moment, and for good reason. Turang has a knack for the strike-zone, striking out just once (!) in his entire Junior season. He consistently squares up the ball to his bat and makes hard contact over and over again. One scout likened him to a high school version of Dansby Swanson. Turang has the range, speed, soft hands, and quick feet to stay at short stop for the longterm.

“to be a left-handed hitting, true shortstop profile, who’s polished, who has range, is impressive. I think that power is the last thing to develop with most guys, and I think that his power will develop.”

In short, Turang is a potential 5-tool player once the power comes with maturity. He can hit, steal bags, and plays a phenomenal short stop. White Sox fans might argue and say that we have Tim Anderson locked in for the foreseeable future, which is true, but he isn’t having the best season by any means. One great rookie year does not necessarily mean it will become the norm (see Gordon Beckham). When it comes to drafting, teams need to take the best player available. There is no need to pass up on a talent like Turang’s for a lesser talent but greater position of need. That is not how rebuilds work. Turang is currently a commit to LSU, but scouts say that if he opted out he could reach the MLB in just 3 years, maybe even quicker. While he is on the younger side of the spectrum, Turang would fit in nicely with the timing of the rebuild, and could be an offensive and defensive force as short for 10+ years.

3) Kumar Rocker – RHP, North Oconee High School, (GA)

Rocker is probably the most physically imposing pitcher that will be available in the 2018 MLB Draft. at 6’4, 250, Kumar is a true power pitcher. His fastball sits at 95, and has touched 97. It will continue to gain velocity as Rocker himself gains strength through maturity. He is also working on a slider that has topped out at 78 mph with nasty bite, and scouts say his changeup will eventually grade out at 50 on the 20-80 scale. While he has a lot to work on, he has the time being so young. His body allows him to repeat his delivery with incredible ease. He also is a prolific hitter from the right side of the plate, and plays 1st base for his high school on occasion, which shows how athletic he truly is. Rocker’s power fastball mold seems to fit with what the White Sox are trying to build down on their farm, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he is their pick when the day comes. Scouts generally agree he has a front-end starter ceiling, with the possibility of ace status.

What Have We Learned?

Well, if the White Sox do indeed pick in the top-three, Seth Beer more than likely would not be the choice. Now, obviously a lot can change in the next 11 months. Beer could have his best collegiate season next year and see his draft stock soar. Other prospects could fall, and some teams might come out of nowhere and push the White Sox back a few draft slots. As of today though, keep an eye on these three prospects. They are surely going to gain more and more attention heading into next season. More will be clear when actual mock drafts come out once teams have solidified their draft position, but for now, let your imagination run wild with different scenarios.

And remember as always, White Sox fans, “In Hahn We Trust”.
