Cubs Fan Challenges Chris Christie To MMA Fight

Chris Christie is the biggest fake tough guy out there, literally.

You’ve probably seen the video of him confronting a Chicago Cubs fan during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers this past weekend, but in case you haven’t here you go.

Pretty easy to go up to guy when you have security guards right by you. So, I completely understand why the Cubs fan didn’t respond, although it looked like a weak move considering you were just heckling him and once Christie is in your face you go mute.

Anyway, that Cubs fan is now challenging Christie to an MMA fight and there’s a company, Tuff-N-Uff, that’s already agreed to put on the event.

Good for you Brad Joseph, extend that 15 minutes of fame into an all out feud with a governor.

By the way, Christie cradling his nachos was not only the funniest part of the video, but so was this threat by the human fupa.

Who are kidding fupa?!?! No chance in hell you were going to dump those nachos on the fan unless he was planning to stick around and eat them off the ground. I’ve never been to Miller Park, but they must have the best nachos because Chris Christie couldn’t get enough of them.

By the way, Chris Christie has to accept this challenge and make it a sumo match.

Bruce Arians Admits He Ran Up Score on Bears in 2015 For Revenge

bruce arians bears

The Bruce Arians Bears beef is real, folks. It’s no secret by this point. Everybody knows the story. Former GM Phil Emery had narrowed his choices for new head coach in 2013 down to two names:  Arians and Marc Trestman. Many people, including Arians himself, thought he’d get the job. He was reigning Coach of the Year after all and a proven NFL staple.

Emery then did what he became famous for. He overthought the situation and went with the wild card Trestman. It of course was a disaster and ended up getting himself fired just two years later. Arians meanwhile got scooped up by the Arizona Cardinals. There he led them to the playoffs twice including an NFC championship in 2015.

Fittingly it was in 2015 that Arians met the Bears for the first time in the regular season. It was week two and Chicago was looking for its first win. What people didn’t know at the time was the old coach had zero intention of letting that happen. Not only that, but there were also plans for rubbing it in as well.

Bruce Arians Bears hatred was real after job snub

Don’t forget that most football coaches used to be players too. They have egos and don’t like being passed over for somebody perceived to be “better” than them. That’s pretty much what the Bears did when they chose Trestman. So Arians tried to make them pay in that game. Suffice to say he succeeded. Arizona dominated to a 48-23 victory.

What nobody knew at the time was Arians was intentionally trying to run up the score. Early in the third quarter the Cardinals had a comfortable 35-20 advantage and the Bears had lost Jay Cutler to injury. So did they content themselves to run down the clock? Nope. Even late in the fourth quarter they were still throwing the ball.

Since then Arians was cordial in his mentions of Chicago. That is until a couple weeks ago. Appearing on the podcast of former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee, he was asked point blank whether he tried to run up the score. Arians didn’t even hesitate with his reply.

McAfee: “When you played against the Chicago Bears the first time (in 2015), after them not giving you the job … did you attempt to bury them?”

Arians: “Yes.”

McAfee: “OK, now when we went out to play against you (in 2013), it was the fourth quarter, you guys were up by I think 17 at that point and you were still throwing the ball deep, were you attempting to bury us?”

Arians: “No, because I knew you had Andrew on your side. I didn’t feel good 21 ahead.”

So not only did he openly admit to trying to crush the Bears, he even delivered a backhanded shot at the entire offense in the process. That is ice cold, Bruce. Nobody can blame him of course. He felt the Bears disrespected him and wanted to make them pay. He did. Hopefully Chicago learned their lesson well.

Cubs Trade Target, Justin Verlander, Put On Waivers

Although the non-waiver trade deadline is in the rear-view window the trading season is still open. All 30 MLB clubs can place players on waivers and the long rumored Chicago Cubs target, Justin Verlander, has been placed on waivers by the Detroit Tigers.

So, this means any team can put a claim on Verlander.

The Cubs have been linked to trade talks for Verlander since early July and now they have another shot to get him. However, it’s a lot more complicated than simply putting in a claim for him.

Bleacher Nation’s Brett Taylor broke down the process perfectly.

If a player is placed on waivers, any team may “claim” him. If more than one team claims the player from waivers, only one team’s claim actually goes through. Priority during this August waiver period is given to teams in the player’s league, with the team with the worst record getting highest priority. If no team in the player’s own league claims him, then priority goes to the other league, again, in reverse order of the standings. (So, as things stand, the Cubs will be near the bottom in waiver priority for all AL players (ahead of only the Dodgers, Nationals, Diamondbacks and Rockies, but will have priority over AL teams for NL players – though they’ll be behind every team in the NL with a worse record.)

Verlander is a 10 and 5 guy, meaning he can veto any trade. If no one claims Verlander, then he has “cleared waivers” meaning the Tigers could try and trade him to any of the other 29 teams.

So, hypothetically speaking the Cubs could put a claim on Verlander, win it, and then the Tigers can try to work out a trade with the Cubs, keep Verlander, or the Tigers just give Verlander to the Cubs and the Cubs then would have to pay the rest of his contract.

And so we have something else to monitor. Waiver trades are rare, but in 2015 the Cubs did get Austin Jackson and Fernando Rodney after both of them cleared waivers.

Theo Epstein Says How Close The Cubs Got To Being Sellers At The Trade Deadline

CHICAGO, IL - APRIL 11: Theo Epstein, President of Baseball Operations of the Chicago Cubs, talks with reporters during batting practice before the Cubs take on the Cincinnati Reds in the home opener at Wrigley Field on April 11, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

It took the Chicago Cubs about two weeks to take control of the NL Central Division after trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by 5.5 entering the All-Star break. They now have a 2.5 game lead and have solidified every spot on their roster following the acquisitions of Jose Quintana, Justin Wilson and Alex Avila. However, Theo Epstein admitted before that the team wasn’t ruling anything out in terms of the trade deadline and prior to Tuesday’s 16-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks he revealed how close the Cubs were to becoming sellers in the trade market.

Yes, the reigning World Series champions were on the verge of being sellers, but really it shows more how the Cubs felt about their competition. Remember, the Cubs played awful up until the All-Star break and were 5.5 games back with a 43-45 record. The starting pitching was bad. The offense was bad. Some fans wanted them to start trading a few of their veterans before the All-Star break, when the Cubs were only 2-3 games out in the division race.

Well, Epstein admitted they were getting prepared to do just that if the Cubs fell behind almost 10 games back.

Via CSN Chicago:

“If we had fallen eight, nine out, we would have certainly been looking at considering moving some of the players who were rentals,” Epstein revealed Tuesday at Wrigley Field. “But we immediately played great out of the stretch and didn’t have to head down that road, which you honestly never want to go down.”

-Theo Epstein

Normally those fans would actually be right about the Cubs trying to get some value for guys like Wade Davis, or Jon Jay, Jake Arrieta and so on, because I remember Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies discussing how since the divisional era only four teams trailing by five or more games at the All-Star break came back to win their division. Yet, fans were acting like the Cubs didn’t have talent and that they were actually bad, not the correct outlook that they were simply playing poorly and underachieving.

So, Theo was actually giving the Cubs a long leash here, giving them the room to still lose more games in the standings before considering making moves the other way. Yeah, pretty safe to say they didn’t think the Brewers were going to be much of a threat despite their 5.5 game lead two weeks ago.

As expected, the Cubs finally got on a roll and came out killing teams in the second half. They’re now 57-48, going 14-3 since the break and it all starts with the starting pitching. Overall, the Cubs have the second best ERA in the second half behind the Los Angeles Dodgers at 2.98.

The Brewers didn’t make any big moves, while the Cubs added a starter, a veteran catcher and a set-up man. The Pittsburgh Pirates were hot for a week, but they’re now 6.5 games back and the St. Louis Cardinals don’t know what direction to take and have a horrible manager.

Thank you for being awful, NL Central Division, signed Cubs fans.

Mitch Trubisky Instantly Clicks With Kevin White After Promotion

The idea of a Mitch Trubisky Kevin White connection seems like a farfetched dream at this point. Chicago Bears fans would love nothing more than to see it happen. In fact one could easily say that was the plan GM Ryan Pace had in mind. Unfortunately no plan survives first implementation. However, slowly but surely it looks like things might be shifting in that direction.

It started when the Bears made a slight tweak to their depth chart going into their padded practice on August 2nd. It involved promoting the rookie quarterback to the #2 offense after spending his first week with the 3s. This would give him his first chance to work with a number of the starters, particularly at wide receiver.

One name who was flip-flopping between the 1st and 2nd units was third-year man White. Up to this point the former first round pick had made a handful of nice plays but wasn’t truly flashing. His position coach Zach Azzanni even admitted the young man was struggling with his confidence. So they decided to buck him up with footage of his outstanding work at West Virginia. A reminder he knows how to do this.

Safe to say it had an effect.

Mitch Trubisky Kevin White combo struck early and often

Of course being paired with the accurate Trubisky was an added bonus. The two didn’t take long to hook up when practice drills began. It seemed like White had a bit more energy and ran with more purpose. He attacked the ball in the air and it led to some nice plays.

There was plenty to take away from this. First of course is the fact that Trubisky got promoted. This shouldn’t be a big surprise. It was a matter of time before he got by Mark Sanchez for that spot. Sanchez is a great veteran presence but he is in no way superior to Trubisky at this point save for experience. The real battle will be to see if the rookie can progress enough where he becomes a true threat to Mike Glennon.

At this stage that appears unlikely. Glennon may be humble and unworried in interviews, but it’s clear he believes the competition is real. His play in practice proves that much. Though not as flashy, he’s been efficient and a vocal leader on the field. Either way it’s encouraging news for White more than anybody.

For the first time in training camp he began to look less like a pass catcher and more like a force. He wasn’t taking what the defense gave him. He was taking what he wanted. That’s the kind of guy fans are hoping to see in 2017.

Michael Jordan Denies Punching Bulls Teammate Steve Kerr

michael jordan denies punching bulls teammate steve kerr

Michael Jordan must have a selective memory. Or maybe he was just trying to be a strong role model for the kids at his basketball camp. After all, the NBA has tried to clean up its act since the Jordan Era, which was rife with fights breaking out between players on the court. What kind of mentor would MJ be if he was bragging about beating up a teammate to these impressionable kids?

Whatever the reason, His Airness denied a claim that he punched former Bulls teammate Steve Kerr during a tension-filled practice in 1995 while doing a Q&A session with his campers in Santa Barbara earlier this week.

Let’s check the footage.

For those of you who are hard of hearing, Jordan’s answer went like this:

“Did I ever hit Steve Kerr? Not that I remember. I think he kind of ran into me first. I don’t think I hit him, he kind of ran into me.” – Michael Jordan

Get Your Story Straight

This incident between Jordan and Kerr is well documented from various firsthand sources. Former Bulls coach Phil Jackson mentions it in his book Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success. Kerr himself has talked about the fight, confirming it did happen but insisting it helped strengthen their relationship. Bill Wennington, another member of the late ’90s threepeat team and current Bulls radio color commentary guy, also remembers the skirmish happening. He praised Kerr for not running away from the fight.

Then there’s Jordan, who’s also shared his recollection of his fight with the Bulls’ three point specialist. In an interview with Michelle Beadle for her segment “Most Misunderstood Sports Stories”, MJ recounted the fight itself and the aftermath.

Check out Jordan’s version of the story below.

There you have it. Jordan “whacked him in the eye.” The GOAT did express his remorse, even calling up Steve later that day to apologize.

So…why deny the fact that this fight happened when taking questions at his basketball camp? I’m sticking with the role model hypothesis. What other explanation is there for denying something that everyone knows to be true?

No matter. That MJ-Kerr fight brought those two, and the whole team, closer together. They went on to set the NBA record for wins in a regular season, going 72-10 on their way to the franchise’s 4th title. Who knows, maybe we’ll get a Kris Dunn vs Cameron Payne fight in training camp to light a spark under this rebuilding roster. Though somehow I doubt that would have the same effect.

Philadelphia Fans and Media Are Demanding a Trade for Kyle Fuller

kyle fuller philadelphia

The Chicago Bears fan base is hopeful for Kyle Fuller. The former first round pick had such promise through his first two seasons, leading the team in interceptions both in 2014 and 2015. Sadly a knee injury stunted his growth last year. Now people aren’t sure where he stands going into the final season of his current contract. One thing is for sure though. The Kyle Fuller Philadelphia movement is in full swing.

No joke. The Philadelphia Eagles fan base is practically up in arms over the idea that their team must somehow swing a trade for the 25-year old cornerback. It involves anything from a late round pick to player-for-player exchanges including linebacker Mychal Kendricks or wide receiver Jordan Matthews. It’s fascinating.

Kyle Fuller Philadelphia movement has gotten to the media too

It’s not just the fans though. Even some in the media have bought into the idea. Last week Eagles beat writer Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com called it “intriguing” and not too cost prohibitive for Eagles GM Howie Roseman to pursue. The primary reason being that Philadelphia is in a serious bind at the cornerback position.

“The addition would be an intriguing one, considering the potential he once showed. The Eagles are paper-thin at cornerback, and are currently counting on last year’s seventh-round pick, Jalen Mills, to be their No. 1 corner.

Outside of Mills, the team only has journey-man veteran cornerback Patrick Robinson and third-round pick Rasul Douglas as viable options on the roster.

Fuller likely won’t cost much to pry away from the Bears — possibly a late-round pick or a player like linebacker Mychal Kendricks.

Which is why even though Fuller isn’t a lock to come in and be an impact player for the Eagles, the combination of his likely low price tag and the team’s desperate need at cornerback could be enough to make Roseman swoop in.”

It’s not hard to sense the desperation in this idea. When a guy like Fuller is considered a potential savior, it must be pretty bad. Then again it’s difficult to understand the panic. Philadelphia had the 13th ranked pass defense in 2016 despite their pass rush collecting just 33 sacks. Then again they had veterans Nolan Carroll and Leodis McKelvin on the roster. Both have since departed for other prospects.

In essence the hope is the Eagles can cast off a player they no longer need, like a Kendricks or Matthews in exchange for a young corner who still has potential in their eyes.

Is it worth it for Chicago?

At first reaction the answer would be no. The Bears secondary needs as many proven corners as it can get. If Fuller were to regain the form he showed in late 2015, it would be worth keeping him around. At the same time the arrivals of players like Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper have eased the dangers faced last year.

The two possible exchange options, Kendricks and Matthews also add some intrigue. Kendricks was an ascending young inside linebacker for the Eagles from 2012 to 2015. His 2013 season was outstanding which included three interceptions, four sacks and 113 tackles. Then the Eagles switched to a 4-3 scheme and he was left out of place.

Matthews on the other hand might be one of the most dependable #2 receivers in the league. He’s not a star, but he’s never had fewer than 800 yards in each of his three NFL seasons. Pair him with Cameron Meredith and that’s actually not a bad setup for Mike Glennon and Mitch Trubisky.

It’s at least something to think about if and when the Eagles ever do attempt a play to get Fuller. For now it’s pure speculation fed by the rabid Philly faithful.

Javier Baez Has The Perfect Reaction After Hitting A 3-Run Home Run

Javier Baez was probably getting frustrated on Tuesday night because home runs were flying left and right and he wasn’t getting in on the fun. Hell, even Jon Lester launched his first career homer, while Baez was hitting ground balls. However, Baez did get to flex his muscles against the Arizona Diamondbacks, hitting a three-run dinger in the sixth inning.

Baez hit a moonshot on Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers, but I guess he was happy to be back at Wrigley Field because he sure did appear to be extra relieved about this home run.

Right before CSN went to commercial break, Baez saw the camera and let out a big “finally,” after his three-run shot.

How can you not enjoy every bit of Javier Baez.

Jon Lester’s Home Run Call In Spanish Is Amazing And So Is Carlos Zambrano Celebrating In The Booth

The Chicago Cubs are broadcasting Tuesday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Spanish on CSN+ and boy was the Jon Lester home run call amazing. Home run calls in Spanish are just better and this is coming from a fan who loves Len Kasper, but it’s 100% true. What made Lester’s first career dinger even better (him hitting one is awesome enough) was Carlos Zambrano in the booth celebrating, as he was part of the Spanish broadcast too.

First, here’s the call by Rodrigo Arana.

And here’s Big Z in the booth.

It’s still great to be a Cubs fan.

JON LESTER JUST HIT A HOME RUN!!!
