Cubs Hit Back-to-Back-to-Back Home Runs

The Chicago Cubs looked dead after the Cincinnati Reds scored nine, NINE, runs in the second inning, but thanks to the wind (at least for one of them) they’re right back in this game after hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning.

First it was Alex Avila, followed by Ian Happ and Javier Baez.

That came after Kris Bryant leadoff the inning with a home run as well.

Bears QB Crisis Keeps Following The Timeline of 2012 Seahawks

bears quarterback crisis

When Mitch Trubisky was drafted back in April, experts tried to search for a parallel to compare the subsequent Chicago Bears quarterback crisis. That is to say the high-price free agent being pushed by the addition of a high draft choice. After some digging the common find was what the Seattle Seahawks did in 2012.

That was the year they signed former Green Bay Packers backup Matt Flynn to a three-year deal at $26 million. The initial plan was for him to starter. However, they knew there weren’t many guarantees his signing would offer. So they doubled down and drafted Russell Wilson out of Wisconsin in the third round.

They insisted that there was no quarterback controversy with the move. It just sort of emerged due in large part to a number of factors as the Chicago Sun-Times broke down.

Bears quarterback crisis is following the exact Seattle blueprint

“Even though the Seahawks had committed a ton of money to Flynn, GM John Schneider and Carroll went into training camp with an open mind.

With Flynn nursing a sore elbow, the Seahawks started Wilson in the preseason dress-rehearsal. The rookie connected on 13-of-19 passes for 185 yards and two TDs in a 44-14 victory over the Chiefs. Flynn, who would make as much in one game as Wilson made for the entire season, never got off the sideline.

Wilson has started every game for the Seahawks since, including consecutive Super Bowls in 2013 and 2014.

When asked about taking the inexperienced Wilson over the high-priced free agent at the time, Carroll said: “The right thing is to get the best players out there.”

What they didn’t check was how the preseason began. In the opener against Tennessee, Flynn was outshined as well. He threw for 71 yards and an interception. Wilson managed 124 yards passing, 59 rushing and two touchdowns with an interception. It was apparent from the outset who the better quarterback was.

Bears eager to see how Mike Glennon responds

Ryan Pace said one of the things he respected the most about Mike Glennon was his confidence. The guy just shrugs issues off and keeps plugging away, as leaders must. Well there’s no doubt he will have to do that on Saturday when the Bears head to Arizona. Glennon will be facing a Cardinals defense that was fourth in the NFL against the pass last year.

It should be known that Flynn flubbed his second chance as well. A week later against Denver he went 6-for-13 for 31 yards. Wilson? He completed 10-of-17 for 155 and two touchdowns without a pick. The rest is history. There is a belief that the Bears coaching staff were quietly happy Glennon struggled in week one.

Now they get a chance to see if he can bounce back.

“In a way, it’s the worst thing that could have happened to Glennon, who has had his struggles in practice. The disparity in play was that great. It opened the conversation for a controversy.

But Bears hope the Broncos game turns out to be the best thing to happen to Glennon. Trubisky’s emergence has turned into a direct challenge of Glennon’s “inner confidence.” It’s really an ideal situation. The Bears needed Glennon’s resolve to be tested.”

Trubisky, to his credit, has steered clear of every attempt to stir the pot. He has maintains that Mike is the starter. Period. Yet at the same time he works tirelessly in the background, anxious to prove he’s ready whenever he gets the green light. Another strong showing in Arizona could be major turning point for him.

And the franchise.

Jon Lester Leaves Game After One Of The Unluckiest Innings Of The Season

By the end of the second inning, the Cincinnati Reds had a 9-0 lead and Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lester was out of the ballgame. Still not clear if Lester has an injury, but he asked for the trainer after an RBI-double that put the Reds up 8-0 at the time.

Lester gave up nine total runs, seven of them earned, but really it was one of the unluckiest innings of the season for a pitcher, as the Reds kept getting hits on soft contact. Slow ground balls and bloopers found the outfield grass and in a blink of an eye the Cubs were down big.

Hopefully there’s nothing seriously wrong with Lester.

One observer on Twitter made a good point and noticed Lester and the trainer looking at his left hand. Possible blister.

Lester threw 40 pitches in the second inning after only needing six to retire the side in order in the top of the first.

UPDATE:

Jon Lester left because of lat tightness, which isn’t good news at all.

Bears Rookie Night At Halas Hall Turned Savage Real Quick

bears rookie night

The NFL has come a long way in 50 years. Rookies used to be hazed mercilessly by veterans in years past. Often it would get to the point of outright bullying, something that isn’t looked upon well these days. The Bears, to their credit, have been one of the teams leading the charge trying to change that. Though rookies are still expected to go through an initiation of sorts, it’s nowhere near as bad as it used to be. Well at least not for rookies themselves as Bears rookie night at Halas Hall demonstrated.

It seemed PowerPoint presentations were the theme this year and young kids were ready to put on a show. Or perhaps in this case a roast. During one section of the festivities the rookies places photos of several notable vets on the screen and then placed another pic alongside it. One that seemed to reflect how they were perceived by the internet.

Suffice to say it got pretty savage real quick as Danny Trevathan revealed.

Bears rookie night didn’t hold back on the burns

Nobody was safe from the barbs. Kyle Long and Willie Young, two of the teams biggest leaders and enforcers took hits.

Trevathan’s fellow inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman didn’t even get a fellow human comparison.

Even the new kid on the block, kicker Roberto Aguayo couldn’t escape the jabs. Barely a part of the team for 48 hours, the rookies absolutely let him have it.

However, those men got off easy as it turns out. The two who might need a trip to the local ICU were quarterback Mike Glennon and wide receiver Kevin White. Glennon got an eyeful of some of the creative memes that have circled the internet since he arrived in Chicago. White? Well let’s just say they dusted off a classic for him.

Ouch. Well it’s nice to see the Bears rookie class doesn’t have any fear. Normally it takes a considerable amount of guts to rag on veterans. They managed to do so and got everybody laughing in the process. If nothing else this was a great way to keep things loose. Nobody should take themselves too seriously. Though one can imagine the rooks might catch an extra thump or two in practice over the next week.

Worth it.

Nicky Delmonico Is Making His Case To Be A Longterm Piece Of The Rebuild

Nicky Delmonico entered today with an on-base streak of 12 games. Well, he made it 13 pretty quickly as he homered in his 1st at-bat.

Next, Delmonico singled, and in the 8th inning, he increased the White Sox lead to 4-2 with his second blast of the night.

Delmonico has been a force since being called up from Triple-A Charlotte. He is currently 3-4 tonight. Lets see how long he can keep it up. One thing is for certain, he has definitely solidified himself onto the future roster. After everything he has been through, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy.

Joe Maddon Blows Up On Umpires, Gets Ejected

Joe Maddon wasn’t in the dugout to watch the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds on a walk-off wild pitch because he was ejected after arguing with umpires earlier in the ninth inning.

Maddon was beside himself after Ben Zobrist got hit by a pitch, but was ruled to be attempting a bunt, thus strike two was called. Maddon raced out of the dugout and was giving it to everyone.

Zobrist eventually moved the runners to second and third, following a slow roller to third base. That set up the two-out, walk-off wild pitch.

It looked like Maddon made contact with one of the umpires, so he might have to serve a suspension for that. We’ll see.

He still couldn’t believe the call after the game either.

Cubs Blow 6-1 Lead, Still Win With A Walk-Off Wild Pitch

John Lackey was pretty good again, pitching six innings and only allowing one run, yet the Chicago Cubs couldn’t hold on to their 6-1 lead after the bullpen allowed three home runs to the Cincinnati Reds. HOWEVER, the Cubs still managed to win on a walk-off wild pitch.

Baseball really is dumb sometimes.

That came after the St. Louis Cardinals had a walk-off loss earlier in the night against the Boston Red Sox, who scored three runs in the ninth inning.

Deja Vu: White Sox Lead Off Game With A Home Run For The Second Day In A Row

Tim Anderson seems to be finally getting back to the player he was last year for the White Sox. The big emphasis recently has been his power tool. He didn’t slow down last night as he turned on the first pitch and took it out to left center for an early 1-0 lead.

Tonight, the White Sox are going against the great Yu Darvish, the sexy pickup the Dodgers acquired at the trade deadline. That didn’t seem to bother Leury Garcia much, as he decided to get in on the leadoff home run party as well.

Early run support for Carlos Rodon is critical, as he can now be more aggressive with the batters he faces.

Let’s hope the recent power surge can continue to be a regular thing for the White Sox.

Akiem Hicks Betrays Company Line, Hints He Wants Trubisky

bears 2018 playoff

Akiem Hicks is a team-first player. He’s made that clear from every quote and actions he’s had to this point. So any policy the team sets, he’s going to follow. It may sound a bit corporate to call it the “company line” but that’s an accurate way to put it. He is never the guy who will stir the pot. However, he’s also human. He has flaws along with his own personal wants and needs. Turns out the 27-year old may have betrayed one of them.

Understand that Hicks, up until last year, was quite spoiled as a player. How so? He got to play with some premium choice quarterbacks. First it was Drew Brees with the New Orleans Saints and then Tom Brady with the New England Patriots. He’s seen the difference between good quarterbacks and bad quarterbacks. Or in this case good quarterbacks and great ones.

So his opinion on the ongoing Bears QB controversy would actually be a valuable. Of course being the team guy he is he’d never offer it. Right?

Akiem Hicks subtly hinted his hope for Mitch Trubisky to start

Well not right out in the open. Nobody is that dumb. Save maybe for a certain somebody on Pennsylvania Avenue. Hicks did however let slip he might prefer to see the rookie starting sooner than later. Adam Hoge of WGN pointed out how it happened during the first preseason game when the defensive end was speaking with the broadcast team.

“You’re interested, you’re intrigued,” defensive end Akiem Hicks said during Trubisky’s debut last week. “He’s our No. 2 overall pick. We’re just as invested as the organization is.”

Two questions later, Hicks delivered this notable response: “I tell you what, the stuff he’s doing on the field right now is something that you hopefully look forward to seeing in the regular season and against better competition. He looks really good right now. He’s out here ready to play, he’s an athlete and I look forward to seeing him compete further.”

In other words, the players want to see more too.

There’s no doubting that the Bears offense came alive when Trubisky stepped into the huddle. Mike Glennon and Mark Sanchez combined for a 3-of-12 stat line including a pick-six. Trubisky went 18-of-25 with two drops, no turnovers and all three of the teams’ scoring drives. It’s undeniable that the team reacts to him with positive energy.

Is he inexperienced? Yes. Some would say way more than most rookies. Yet the proof is in the pudding. He’s accurate, athletic, intelligent and a tireless worker by most accounts. In such circumstances it’s only a matter of time before he finds success. Couple that with the underwhelming impression Glennon has made thus far, it’s understandable why Hicks would feel this way.

John Lackey Gets Tagged Out At Second Base After A Walk Following First Career Stolen Base

First of all, hats off to John Lackey because I’m going to say about 99 percent of Chicago Cubs fans couldn’t wait to get rid of him, myself included, and although it hasn’t been pretty the righty has been good enough to win games for the past month. That continued on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds and hell, he even made us laugh too when he picked up his first career stolen base.

So, not only did Lackey escape from all sorts of trouble in the first two innings, he also got a hit in the fourth and then showed off his wheels.

And then almost immediately made a dumb out at second.

Ben Zobrist walked on a 3-2 pitch, but Lackey got off second base way to far that led to his eventual out.

Lackey was probably tired of standing around on the bases anyway.

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!

Lackey can do it all.
