Worried Bad WRs Will Ruin Mitch Trubisky? These QBs Say R-E-L-A-X

chicago bears wide receivers

“The Chicago Bears wide receivers are terrible.” “Don’t put Mitch Trubisky in now.” “He’s got nobody to throw to.” “This will ruin his development.” So on and so forth. That is pretty much the standing argument among the pessimistic section of the Bears fan base regarding whether the team should start their rookie quarterback. Never mind the fact that Mike Glennon is completely missing guys who are wide open every single week.

Let’s focus on the group themselves. Yes, it’s not ideal. In fairness the Bears didn’t start the season with plans that Kendall Wright, Deonte Thompson and Josh Bellamy would be their guys. Cameron Meredith and Kevin White both suffered season-ending injuries. It’s just bad luck. At the same time, history has shown that playing with less-than-stellar receiving corps don’t ruin the progression of a rookie quarterback.

History says the Chicago Bears wide receivers won’t ruin him

Receivers are of course important. The more talented the group, the more explosive the passing attack can be. At the same time not having a stellar cast has failed to prove on several occasions that it’s a deal breaker for a quarterbacks’ career. Here are a few notable Pro Bowlers and two Hall of Famers who had mediocre targets their first years.

Donovan McNabb (1999)

  • Torrance Small
  • Charles Johnson
  • Na Brown

Derek Carr (2014)

  • Andre Holmes
  • James Jones
  • Bryce Butler

Dan Fouts (1973)

  • Jerry LeVias
  • Gary Garrison
  • Ron Holliday

Terry Bradshaw (1970)

  • Ron Shanklin
  • Dave Smith
  • Hubie Bryant

Fran Tarkenton (1961)

  • Jerry Reichow
  • Dave Middleton
  • A.D. Williams

The blocking is where it will matter most

For those keeping score Tarkenton, Bradshaw and Fouts are in Canton. McNabb went to six Pro Bowls. Carr was an MVP candidate in 2016. The point of this is that wide receiving groups can be improved. They don’t ultimately decide the career of quarterback for one season. More often than not it’s the offensive line that does this. Look at some of the biggest busts in draft history and more often than not they were banged around a lot.

  • David Carr – sacked 76 times as a rookie
  • Rick Mirer – sacked 47 times as a rookie
  • Tim Couch – sacked 56 times as a rookie
  • Akili Smith – sacked 19 times as a rookie (in four games)
  • Blake Bortles – sacked 55 times as a rookie
  • Jack Thompson – sacked 16 times as a rookie (in 87 pass attempts)

Taking that amount of punishment can lead to a quarterback dropping his eyes. He starts looking for the rush instead of keeping his sight downfield. It’s a natural instinct that’s almost impossible to fight. This is the key for the Bears. Can they protect Trubisky? For what it’s worth the offensive line has allowed eight sacks so far in 2017. That ties them for seventh-best in the NFL.

It may just turn out okay.

Nationals Players Stop Game, Max Scherzer Leaves With Some Sort Of Injury

Uh oh, did you hear that noise? It was the collective gasp of Washington Nationals fans from Saturday night, when Max Scherzer left with some sort of injury in his final start of the season. Less than a week before the Chicago Cubs face off against the Nationals in the NLDS, Washington’s ace departed early after what appears to be a leg issue.

During the fourth inning, Scherzer took his time on the mound after delivering a pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates and looked uncomfortable. Nationals players called for time and met with Scherzer on the mound, prompting Dusty Baker and Washington’s athletic trainer to come out.

The Nationals TV announcers said they could see him mouth that something was tight. Scherzer then exited the game.

Scherzer is one of the best starting pitchers in the game and it would obviously be a big blow to the Nationals if he’s not 100 percent for the NLDS. He’s already had a few minor issues during the final eight weeks of the season.

The NLDS between the Cubs and Nationals begins on Oct. 6, in Washington D.C.

The Cubs are dealing with their own starting rotation issue, as Jake Arrieta is likely to be unavailable until at least Game 3 of the series. He was on the disabled list in early September with a hamstring injury. The Cubs opted to scratch Arrieta from his scheduled start on Sunday, and will have him pitch in a simulated game next week instead.

UPDATE:

Dusty Baker said following the game that it was only a hamstring cramp.

No One Is More Ready For The Playoffs Than Kyle Schwarber

The Chicago Cubs keep rolling through their opponents heading into the playoffs and if you think this team isn’t going to be loose, think again. No one represents that more than Kyle Schwarber, who keeps hitting monster home runs and is relaxing in the dugout.

Dance like no one’s watching!

Source: Ryan Pace May Have Eyes On John Fox’s Replacement

ryan pace

There may be no hotter seat in the NFL right now than the one under Chicago Bears head coach John Fox. That’s what happens when you lose a Thursday Night game 35-14 to your bitter rival. A game in which the team clearly looked unprepared and out-coached throughout. Fox even admitted as much after the game. At 1-3 (10-26 overall) his future is in the balance and some wonder if the same is true for GM Ryan Pace.

While some hardliners want him gone, others believe his success in the draft over the past two years has made that inadvisable. He’s shown enough to prove that getting the head coach position right could turn this franchise into a contender. I was contacted recently by source well-connected in the scouting community. Everything he’s heard up to this point paints a clear picture for next offseason.

“Pace survives and replaces Foxy is what my Chicago guys are saying. Bears scouts all think they’re safe. I know that.”

None of this is set in stone of course. Things change fast in the NFL, as do minds. George McCaskey could just as easily decide to wipe the slate clean and try again. However this is the latest indication that ownership likes Pace and is willing to give him another try at getting the head coach right.

Ryan Pace may already have a plan for what to do next

The source went on to tell me that if Fox is indeed out, the top brass already have their sights set on a particular name. Somebody that Pace knows quite well.

“A lot of the industry elders…veteran guys who are no longer GMs and have relationships with owners…think Sean Payton is the guy in Chicago if ownership Is willing to pay.”

This makes perfect sense from a logical point of view. Pace worked with Payton for nine seasons in New Orleans with the Saints. The head coach was disappointed to see him go in 2015 given their strong relationship. There is also the fact Payton lived a good portion of his life in Chicago. He went to high school and college in Illinois and played one season of quarterback for the Bears in 1987.

There’s just one problem. Payton signed a 5-year contract extension through 2020 last March. That would seem to indicate he’s not going anywhere. Well, not exactly.

Signs show Payton looking to jump ship sooner than later

This isn’t the first time buzz has surrounded a possible Payton exit. Last December it surfaced in the news that he was showing “sincere interest” in the vacant Los Angeles Rams job according to Ian Rapoport.

“With the Los Angeles Rams job open, multiple sources say it is a position Payton is monitoring with sincere interest. For Payton to become the team’s new head coach, it would take significant maneuvering behind the scenes to work. One source described the prospects as not imminent or likely but “possible.” The Rams, of course, would have to decide he’s their overwhelming No. 1.”

The Rams did not make a play for Payton, instead going with former Washington offensive coordinator Sean McVay. He went on to report that Payton had designs on getting a job on the west coast. He also eyed the 49ers and Chargers jobs as well. Neither came within striking distance. This would of course raise questions about the Bears position.

Nonetheless there are other factors indicating his likelihood to leave. A big one is the status of quarterback Drew Brees. Not only is the future Hall of Famer turning 39 next year, he’ll also be a free agent for the first time since 2006. He signed a one-year extension this offseason to postpone it to 2018. However, his advancing age and expensive cap hit are making it difficult on the team.

Especially when they aren’t winning. The Saints finished 7-9 three-straight seasons from 2014 to 2016 and are 1-2 to start this year. A failure to make the playoffs for the fourth year in a row likely could convince the team to let him walk. If Brees walks, almost everybody believes Payton walks too.

Payton comes with loads of credibility but also warning signs

From the simple point of view, hiring Payton is a no brainer for Pace. He’s still only 53-years old. His success with Brees proves he could be just what the doctor ordered for Mitch Trubisky and the Bears offense. Last but not least? He has a Super Bowl ring. That comes with a ton of prestige in and of itself.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t some concerns. The long playoff drought is certainly one. Perhaps the biggest is his issues on defense. Payton has been the head coach in New Orleans since 2006. During that 10-season span his team has fielded a top 10 defense twice. They’ve had a defense ranked 20th or lower seven times. He’s had five different defensive coordinators over that span.

Some might say he’s the offensive version of Lovie Smith, which might not excite Bears fans. One other thing to consider? No head coach who won a Super Bowl with one team has ever taken a job elsewhere and successfully won another. That list includes the following:

  • Vince Lombardi (Washington Redskins)
  • Hank Stram (New Orleans Saints)
  • Tom Flores (Seattle Seahawks)
  • Mike Ditka (New Orleans Saints)
  • George Seifert (Carolina Panthers)
  • Bill Parcells (New England Patriots, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys)
  • Jimmy Johnson (Miami Dolphins)
  • Dick Vermeil (Kansas City Chiefs)
  • Mike Holmgren (Seattle Seahawks)
  • Mike Shanahan (Washington Redskins)

Lombardi died of cancer. Parcells and Holgren made it back to the Super Bowl but lost. It raises the concern that a coach tends to lose the edge a bit after his successful run with the previous team. Nonetheless there are reasons to think Payton will be Pace’s priority if he becomes available in January.

Javier Baez Treats Cubs Fans To Another No-Look Tag

Javier Baez continues to make the run-of-the-mill plays in a baseball game look exciting. The master of the no-look tag did it again for the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, when he flashed some leather against the Cincinnati Reds.

Gotta love the confidence Willson Contreras had right after he let go of his bullet to second base, as he was halfway to the dugout before the runner was ever called out. Yet, when it’s Baez receiving the throw you should be confident.

I think Baez might have even surprised himself after that play.

Kyle Schwarber Just Massacred His 30th HR Of The Season

Liftoff in 3-2-1…SEE YA!

What a season it’s been for Kyle Schwarber, but despite the down times and boy were they down he appears to be heating up at the percect time for the Chicago Cubs. Yes, the average has only been hovering at about .200, but the power is still there. On Saturday, Schwarber joined the 30-home run club, absolutely destroying a pitch to left-center field.

Mike Glennon Wikipedia Page Sabotaged In Wake of Trubisky Rumors

The Mike Glennon Wikipedia page is the latest victim of angry Chicago Bears fans. A week after Marcus Cooper got nailed for his giant blunder against Pittsburgh, the starting quarterback is the new lightning rod. This shouldn’t be the biggest surprise. Not after Glennon played one of the ugliest games in recent memory against the Green Bay Packers. He threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles, looking completely lost at times.

If anything the Bears deserve some credit for sticking by their word for the first four games. They’d promised it was Glennon’s year. Problem is he also promised them steady, efficient play. Instead they got eight turnovers and a 1-3 record. Yet they still stuck by their word. On a moral level that’s quite commendable. On a football one? It’s insanity.

Now rumors are beginning to percolate that a change is in the works. With 10 days to prepare for their next game, this mini bye week gives the Bears one of the best openings they’ll have to insert top draft choice Mitch Trubisky. Already a number of insiders are hinting the decision is made.

Mike Glennon Wikipedia page reflects fan sentiment of this

No doubt plenty of fans have already heard this rumor. Despite no official confirmation yet, they seem convinced it’s inevitable at this point. So one of them decided to send a message by making one tiny edit to Glennon’s Wikipedia page.

After four weeks it’s safe to say that’s probably where he belongs. Glennon had a shot in 2013 to prove he could be a starter. Instead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers thought Josh McCown would be a better option. In hindsight they weren’t wrong. McCown has a 91.3 quarterback rating so far this year. Glennon has a 76.9. McCown doesn’t have a Pro Bowl offensive line in front of him or two outstanding backs to hand off to either.

There are no excuses for how Glennon is playing. He’s quite simply bad at the football.

Steve McMichael’s Mother Was an Absolute Savage to Mike Ditka

mike ditka

Steve McMichael is known for being one of the greatest, most outspoken characters in the history of Chicago Bears football. He’s never been a man afraid to speak his mind. Well it seems we’ve finally learned where he got that from. During an appearance on the Dan McNeil podcast “Unsupervised” he revealed just how brutal the old woman could be when she was not happy with someone.

The conversation had shifted to the ESPN documentary about the 1985 Bears team that won the Super Bowl. McNeil was surprised and somewhat disappointed the episode didn’t once address the problems that developed between the players on the team and head coach Mike Ditka after that season. Namely the Ditka’s lack of loyalty or professionalism at times that turned much of the locker room against him.

Well it turns out McMichael’s mother wasn’t suffering Da Coach even before that. McMichael explained an incident between the two occurred during the Super Bowl run.

Mike Ditka got roasted twice over his lack of actual coaching prowess

“It was the ’85 Bears wasn’t it? It’s like my mother told Mike Ditka when he walked out of the Miami, down in Miami with that one game we lost. He walked out and mother said he had his head ducked down walking through, you know, out the exit past the fans. And my mother says as he walked by, ‘If I’d have called a game like that I’d have hung my head too.’

Alright? He acted like he didn’t hear her. He walks out of the Super Bowl dressing room and she’s outside waiting on me to come out of the locker room. He walks up to her and you know what he says? ‘Well how did I do today, baby?’ She says, ‘Shit, they didn’t need you today.'”

Yeeeow. Send that man to the burn unit. Chicago lost that game in Miami 38-24. This after falling behind 31-10 in the first half. Players later lamented they were grateful for the loss but the opportunities had been there to win if not for some questionable coaching decisions.

One was refusing to let up on their blitzes despite Dan Marino shredding them with his quick passes. The other was constant pass calls despite Jim McMahon not being healthy and the offensive line not blocking well. Walter Payton was averaging 5.2 yards per carry that night.

As for the Super Bowl, the Bears hammered the Patriots 46-10. It was evident early that no amount of game planning by New England could make up for the fact that Chicago was the clear superior football team. Ditka could’ve taken a nap on the bench for three hours and they still would’ve won handily. Kudos to Mongo’s mom for recognizing that.

You Won’t Believe What Dumbass Thing Michael Wacha Said After The Cubs Kicked The Cardinals Ass

To say the Chicago Cubs dominated the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017 would be an understatement. The Cubs finished with a 14-5 record against their bitter division rivals that included winning 11 of their last 13 matchups. Despite that, Cardinals starting pitcher Michael Wacha thinks his team is still better.

A quick reminder that two weeks ago the Cardinals went to Wrigley Field three games behind the Cubs in the standings. The Cubs swept them. This week, the Cubs went to Busch Stadium and clinched their second consecutive division crown.

Wacha doesn’t buy the hype apparently.

“I feel like we are right there,” he said when asked about the gap between his team and the one partying on the other side of the building.

The Cardinals have not made the postseason for two straight seasons and their last trip to the playoffs ended in a series loss against the Cubs.

As for 2017, when the Cardinals had their season on the line, the Cubs ended it. Hell, the Cardinals weren’t even better than the Iowa Cubs, who basically made up the majority of Thursday’s lineup that bounced the Cardinals out of playoff contention.

The Cardinals are better? Give me what Michael Wacha is smoking.

“I feel like we are a better team,” he added. “The guys in this clubhouse, the way they come to play every day. I know we didn’t stack up very well against them this year. It’s something we’ve got to do a better job of.”

(Michael Wacha)

Keep being in denial. That’s fine. It sounds like the entire Cardinals’ organization is because for some reason they still want Mike Matheny as the manager. As a matter of fact, please, keep him on board. I like seeing his dumb face, with his arms folded, standing in the dugout while his pitchers get their ass handed to them.

I hope Michael Wacha has a great time during the offseason. Meanwhile, the inferior Cubs will be playing in the postseason.

Ian Happ Hits Game-Winning 3-Run Home Run For The Cubs

The fun continues for the Chicago Cubs, who are still making these meaningless games exciting for fans. Ian Happ made Wrigley Field jump with a game-winning three run home run on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds. The eighth-inning dinger gave the Cubs a 5-4 lead that stood up as Justin Grimm got the save.

Happ has now homered in consecutive games and has 24 home runs in his rookie season. Such a beautiful swing.

The Cubs have gone 14-3 since being swept at home by the Brewers about three weeks ago. Great time of the year to get rolling.
