Best Friend Tells Great Story of Impact Trubisky’s Leadership Can Have

Maribeth Joeright/MJoeright@News-Herald.com Mentor's Mitch Trubisky threw six touchdowns and led his team to a 56-28 victory over Solon Friday at Mentor High School.

Throwing the football for yards and touchdowns is the basis of what the quarterback does. However, the job of that position goes so much deeper. QBs are expected to be the conductors of the orchestra. The boss of the company. The general of the army. Due to their prestigious position, other players look to it for guidance. Those that fail in this responsibility tend not to have much success. That’s why the Mitch Trubisky leadership question will be a huge topic for the next 12 games and beyond.

The discussion and speculation around the #2 overall pick is almost over. Trubisky is finally set to debut against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football. Everybody knows the details by now. He’s athletic, tough, and probably the most accurate passer to come out of college in the past five years. All of those are great traits to have.

The pressing question is will the rest of this Bears team follow him? One of the lasting criticisms of Jay Cutler was that he largely failed at inspiring teammates to play better. It’s hard to imagine a rookie with just 13 college starts being that far along. Yet somebody who knows him well has a story to ease those concerns.

Settling Whether Next Bears Head Coach Should Be Offensive or Defensive

Does anybody honestly think that John Fox will remain the Bears head coach beyond 2017? It just doesn’t feel like that’s possible. The team is 1-3. With 12 games left they are turning to Mitch Trubisky at quarterback. Though the #2 overall pick is talented, is it reasonable to think he can win enough games to save Fox’s job? Never mind the serious lack of options at wide receiver.

Odds say it’s going to take quite a run over the next three months to pull it off. Most agree anything less than 7-9 won’t be enough to justify keeping him. That means the Bears have to go 6-6. Looking at their schedule they will face six teams that currently have a winning record. Given that and the ever-growing list of key players getting injured? It’s unclear whether Fox has any magic left.

So it’s time to presume what many already do. What if the Bears send him packing in 2018? Who should they hire? Well it’s become a tug-of-war between two schools of thought. Some believe an offensive coach should be targeted. Obviously that’s with the intent of developing Trubisky. Others feel it can’t be pigeonholed to one side of the ball. If a defensive coach seems like the best option, he should be hired.

So what does history say?

Did Jon Gruden Betray His 2018 Plans While Praising Trubisky?

Make no mistake. The next 12 games are going to decide a lot about the Chicago Bears’ future. None more so than the fate of their head coach. John Fox is 10-26 since taking over in 2015 and has just five wins since the start of December that year. Everything will be banked on what happens moving forward, especially regarding the development of rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky. If he doesn’t show progress, it’s likely GM Ryan Pace will find somebody else to do the job. Many people are clamoring for Jon Gruden.

This isn’t the first time his name has been tossed in the hat. Ever since retiring in 2009 he’s had his name linked to multiple comeback rumors. Thus far he’s stuck by his insistence he enjoys his new job as analyst for Monday Night Football. He’s 54-years old now. Not old by NFL standards but certainly staring down that point of no return.

It’s been speculated that nothing short of ideal circumstances would draw him back to the sidelines. That means a team with a quarterback he can work with. Thus far it hasn’t happened. Could that be about to change?

Bulls “Point Guard Of The Future” Sidelined 2-4 Weeks

Well my fellow Chicagoans, Kris Dunn is down.

On June 22nd, the day of the NBA draft, the Bulls finally pulled the trigger on the long expected Jimmy Butler trade– opting to swap a proven star for youth and potential.

As a result of said trade, GarPax hitched the future of their franchise to two unproven commodities with seemingly very high ceilings in Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn. This coming despite the fact that LaVine, an uber athletic wing who relies on his athleticism, had suffered a torn ACL that sidelined him for most of the 2016-17 season; and the reality that Dunn was widely (although unfairly) labeled a disappointment in his rookie campaign with whispers of the word “bust.”

But Dunn was their guy. He was coveted coming out of Providence in 2016 for his defensive ability and freakish physical specs (6’4″ with 7’0″ wingspan), and evidenced by the trade that brought him here, that infatuation had obviously not faded.

The Present

Fast forward to this past Friday and hopes had to be running high for Bulls fans and brass alike, as Dunn was in the midst of his best game wearing red to date– 11 points in 16 minutes on 5-7 shooting. That is until he tried to block Greg Monroe.

Now due to a dislocated finger, Dunn will be out 2-4 weeks to start the season, joining LaVine on the bench for the Bulls season opener against Toronto on October 19th.

Now, a dislocated finger obviously isn’t the end of the world by any stretch of the imagination, and by all accounts LaVine is stronger than he was before the injury according to those with knowledge of his rehab. However, it is disappointing that Bulls fans, now without Butler for the first time in his career, won’t be able to see the two young promising talents that convinced GarPax to trade him away.

Adding insult to injury, Lauri Markkanen, another piece acquired via the Butler trade, is still out with a back injury. Although he will hopefully be returning today against New Orleans.

For now all we can say is…all in good time, and aside from that, let’s just hope when the day does come for our future to grace the court together in red it will be the beginning of blue skies ahead for our franchise in disarray.

Bears Could Have Pro Bowl Safety Fall in Their Laps Next Year

Eddie Jackson is the first sign of progress the Chicago Bears have made at safety in a long time. The rookie, while not spectacular to this point has shown considerable progress thus far. Problem is this hasn’t solved the overarching problem at the position. They’re still weak there whether it be Quintin Demps or Adrian Amos starting in the other spot. It’s clear they need more help. So how does a Bears Eric Reid plan sound?

Naturally a little context is going to be needed. Reid was a first round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2013. He became their starting safety right away, snagged four interceptions and went to the Pro Bowl as a rookie. He had another strong year in 2014 with three interceptions. Unfortunately things went downhill from there.

The 49ers began to make frequent changes to their coaching staff. Reid had a new defensive coordinator in 2015, 2016 and now 2017. The last one switched the scheme from a 3-4 alignment to a 4-3, one he’s never played in before. This has led to speculation that the team may be thinking about a change.

Prince Amukamara Joins Outcry on Mitch Trubisky’s Merciless Practice Habits

The chorus of voices is growing ever larger coming out of Chicago Bears practices. Defensive players sharing what feels like war stories of their encounter with the fierce enemy. It started with Leonard Floyd detailing Mitch Trubisky as a “Pretty Boy Assassin.” How he enjoyed skirting the unwritten rules of practice by trying to beat the defense as scout team quarterback.

Soon after two more names came forward in Eddie Jackson and Sam Acho. Jackson detailed the frustrating problems facing the #2 overall pick and how he put so few balls in harms way thanks to his accuracy and decision-making. Acho was drawn in more by his remarkable maturity for being 22-years old. The self-assured confidence he shows.

It seems the latest man to give up his vow of silence is cornerback Prince Amukamara. He corroborated the story by his defensive teammates in his own colorful words.

NLDS Tied After Cubs Bullpen Shits The Bed In Game 2

The Cubs have made numerous trades that helped shape their World Series winning team. However while this trade has gone under the radar, it has been just as beneficial as the more high profile deals. (Photo courtesy of MLB.com)

There are times when you simply tip your cap to the other team and Game 2 of the NLDS was a perfect example. The Chicago Cubs had a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning, but the Washington Nationals smacked two home runs and won Game 2, 6-3.

Carl Edwards Jr. began the eighth, allowing a leadoff single and after striking out Trea Turner he was left in to face Bryce Harper. Edwards fell behind in the count 3-1 and then made a huge mistake. He hung a curveball and Harper destroyed the pitch to tie the game.

Mike Montgomery was warming up and you might think why he wasn’t in to face Harper, a left-handed hitter. Well, Edwards has better numbers against lefties than Montgomery.

Edwards made a mistake and Harper made him pay.

Anthony Rendon walked and then Joe Maddon brought in Montgomery. It didn’t get any better. Daniel Murphy singled and then Ryan Zimmerman clubbed a game-winning three run homer.

So, can’t win when your most trusted relievers fail to do their job. And by the way, if you’re saying Maddon should have brought in Wade Davis, think about the bitching you did last year when he did the same with Arolidis Chapman.

It was a shitty loss because the Cubs had a chance to go up 2-0, but hey the Nationals weren’t just going to lay down and die. Jose Quintana and Max Scherzer will be the Game 3 starters at Wrigley Field on Monday.

Jim Bob Cooter: A 2018 Chicago Bears Head Coach Profile

John Fox is a desperate man these days. He’s 62-years old and hasn’t yet posted a winning record with the Chicago Bears after two seasons. His 2017 run isn’t looking much better after a 1-3 start. This has forced him to make some changes. For one he’s starting a rookie at quarterback. That marks the first time it’s happened under his watch in seven years.

He’s even starting to grow out a beard after 14 years of being clean shaven. He’s no doubt pulling out all the stops to rescue what appears to be his last stand as an NFL head coach. A total of 12 games remain this season. If he fails to win enough of them the odds are he won’t survive to another year.

That’s why the search has continued among fans for his possible replacement. One of the most popular names making the rounds of late is a man with the best name in the NFL right now. That’s Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. What would the Bears be getting if they tabbed him to take over command control?

Cubs Add Young Hitters To Game 2 NLDS Lineup

After a brilliant start by Kyle Hendricks in the series-opener, the Chicago Cubs head into Game 2 of the NLDS with an almost all right-handed lineup against Gio Gonzalez and the Washington Nationals.

Anthony Rizzo is the only lefty for the Cubs, as Albert Almora Jr. gets the start in center field, while Ian Happ makes his postseason debut in left. Ben Zobrist starts in right field for the second game in a row.

Almora was a certainty to crack the lineup, as he’s destroyed lefties all year. Even Rizzo, the only lefty for the Cubs, has a .260 average this season against left-handed pitching.

First pitch is at 4:30 p.m., with Jon Lester making the start for the Cubs.

Longtime Mitch Trubisky Rival Predicts QB Will Crush Minnesota

kareem hunt

The buzz for the Mitch Trubisky debut on Monday Night Football October 9th is generating a rumble on the Richter scale. Chicago Bears fans have waited years for the team to finally take their crack at drafting a quarterback high. A total of 35 years in fact. Now it has happened and after a dismal month of watching Mike Glennon fall on his face, the time has all but arrived.

Conversations swirled around the subject all week and people are getting pretty impatient. They know he has limited options at wide receiver. At the same time they also know he’s an athlete who can create for himself. Also he has a tremendous running game and solid tight ends to help. The question becomes can he generate any sort of movement against what is a talented, well-coached Minnesota Vikings defense?

One notable player believes that not only it will happen, but that he’ll end up having a tremendous opening act. It seems rather fitting that this player has a long-standing rivalry with the Bears QB going back years.
