White Sox Outfield Prospect To Miss At Least Six Weeks

On the day of the White Sox first official Spring training game of 2018, some less than ideal news broke out stating that Micker Adolfo has a sprained UCL in his right elbow.

Adolfo has had numerous nagging injuries that have delayed his development ever since he signed with the White Sox a few years back. Last season he was able to stay healthy and produced his best season as a pro, hitting .264 with 16 home runs and 68 RBI’s. He is known mostly for his cannon of an arm, which Aaron Rowand has said is as good as Vlad Guerrero’s.

Just this past week Adolfo was heard talking with Luis Robert and Eloy Jimenez about how the three Cubans could one day form a dynamic outfield for the White Sox. That is still absolutely possible, but Adolfo cannot afford to keep missing extended periods of time if he wants to continue his development.

Even with a second opinion, it sounds like Adolfo will miss all of Spring Training and the first couple weeks of the season at least. For now,all fans can do is hope that he can avoid surgery and come back sooner than later.

I’m All In On Lauri Markkanen Being The Next Slam Dunk Champ

I demand a 1-on-1 matchup immediately between Donovan Mitchell and Chicago Bulls rookie Lauri Markkanen for the slam dunk title. If jumping over a crouched Kevin Hart is good enough for the judges, then I’m sure Markkanen can do better in his sleep.

Before Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Markkanen showed off his dunking prowess and I’m all in on him being the next slam dunk champ.

Made it look easy, but of course we all know that wasn’t even close to his best.

Watch your back, Zach LaVine, Markkanen’s coming for that dunking crown.

Yu Darvish’s Cubs Debut Announced

Fans going to Sloan Park on March 1, will get to see Yu Darvish’s Chicago Cubs debut in spring training, as the newly-acquired starter will pitch against the Colorado Rockies.

The Cubs announced next week’s starting pitchers and we’ll get to see the whole rotation for the first time this spring. It begins with fellow newcomer Tyler Chatwood getting the start on Monday. He’ll be followed by Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Darvish and Jose Quintana.

Mike Montgomery will also get his first action on Wednesday, pitching after Hendricks.

As you’d expect, the starters won’t pitch much, simply an inning to get going in early on.

Lester’s start comes against the White Sox and fans will get to watch that game on WGN, with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. CST. Fans will also get to watch Quintana’s start on March 2, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. That game will begin at 2:10 p.m.

And for those of you who just can’t wait to see Darvish, here’s some video of his first bullpen session as a member of the Cubs.

We still don’t know how the starting rotation will go in order, but Joe Maddon did have a lot of high praise for Lester earlier this week, so he could be sticking with the veteran lefty, who has made two of the last three Opening Day starts for the Cubs.

A New Name Emerges in Chicago Bears Free Agency Plans

chuck pagano

Ryan Pace doesn’t view free agency as the avenue to making his team contenders. Even so, it’s clear the Chicago Bears free agency plans for 2018 must be directed towards finding upgrades to the roster. Pace can’t afford another losing season, even with the arrival of a new coaching staff buying him a little more time. He also has to erase serious doubts about his ability to navigate the veteran market after his disastrous 2017 free agent class.

Does this mean he’ll be more aggressive in his pursuit of top names? To be fair word persists the Bears made a hard run at several last year. They just failed to secure any of them, no doubt due to their ugly finish in 2016. Be that as it may, Pace is almost certain to maintain his current style of seeking out underrated bargains in an effort to avoid shelling out large guaranteed deals.

According to a source, it appears the primary focus of the Bears plan of attack for this March is at two positions. The first being wide receiver and the other being cornerback. This isn’t a surprise since both are in a state of flux for Chicago at the moment. There are even some names they have in mind, including one many fans don’t know.

Chicago Bears free agency plans include emerging Rashaan Melvin

Early indicators are the Bears will be in on almost every big name on the receiver market. They, of course, will be interested in re-signing all of their corners including Kyle Fuller. However, there are two other names they’re positioning to pounce on.

“The Bears are focusing on Sammy Watkins and Marquise Lee. A Landry trade is still possible. They’re also preparing runs at Trumaine Johnson and Rashaan Melvin.”

Melvin is quite the story. This is a kid who took the long road to NFL success. Born in Waukegan, Illinois, he made his mark at Northern Illinois. Despite considerable production, he didn’t get much attention from teams in the 2013 draft, going undrafted. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent. Over the next three seasons, he bounced between several teams including Tampa, Miami, Baltimore and New England. It wasn’t until he landed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2016 that he finally got his shot.

He played well his first year with the team, enough to earn him full starting honors this past season. Despite only playing 10 games due to a hand injury, he still managed three interceptions and 13 passes defended. At 6’2″ he features the kind of rangy size that Vic Fangio covets in his cornerbacks. With the Colts shifting to a 4-3 defense, he’ll likely seek out a team that runs the 3-4, making Chicago an obvious possibility.

The price tag won’t be too high for him and his local connections should give the Bears an advantage in negotiations. This may not be a premier signing but if they’re looking for underrated value Melvin is as good as they get.

Cubs Star Kris Bryant Is Ready To Fight For Big CBA Changes

Kris Bryant is well aware of the slow-moving market this offseason across MLB and he’s prepared to fight for big changes in the next collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA happens to expire one year before Bryant himself becomes a free agent.

The Chicago Cubs star told USA TODAY that he’ll be more vocal when it comes time to demand changes in the next CBA.

Via USA TODAY.

“I do see some big changes in the next CBA – stuff that we’ll have to fight for,” Bryant told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday. “I do know that I’d love to be more involved, because a couple years ago, I’m just coming up and trying to get a hold on things.

“But this off-season, seeing how things really do work, I definitely want to have more of a voice. Any time our players’ association gets out here and wants to talk, I want to be there, I want to learn, I want to engage, just to express our side of things, and what we’d like to fight for.”

Back in 2015, Bryant was clearly going to be the Cubs starting third baseman to begin the season, but his MLB debut was delayed eight games so that the club could pick up an extra year of service time. Bryant won rookie of the year and followed that up by winning National League MVP in 2016, when the Cubs won the World Series. In his MVP-winning year, Bryant had a $652,000 salary.

Bryant, 26, did set a new record earlier in the offseason, getting $10.85 million in his first year of being arbitration eligible. He wants to make sure his future is secure and also change the structure for the future young stars of the game.

“It’d be weird if someone came into the league making $10 million when they’re a rookie,” says Bryant, who will make $10.85 million in his first of four arbitration-eligible seasons. “But I do think that’s something that should be and will be addressed in the next CBA – getting paid more at the front.

“It is kind of an imbalance right now.”

The third baseman is a Scott Boras client and Bryant wasn’t shy about criticizing MLB.

Bryant says he “absolutely” does not believe salaries are rising in lockstep with revenues, despite Commissioner Rob Manfred’s comments to the contrary. He also echoes the thought of his agent, Scott Boras, and others who believe the entire winter was bad for baseball.

“When you look at the brand of Major League Baseball – it’s the best brand there is,” he says. “Not to take away from any leagues around the world, but the best players play here. And to not see the best players sign, who are still at home, I think that’s a little chink in our armor.

“I definitely think, this off-season, just the brand in general of Major League Baseball, took a step back.”

In 2015, Bryant filed a grievance against the Cubs, alleging the team kept him in the minors unnecessarily and had his “service time manipulated to delay future free agency,” according to Yahoo! Sports. As of April 2017, that grievance was still pending.

So, it’ll be interesting what the next CBA brings, as this offseason has already been filled with tension between MLB and the MLBPA. Will the changes that Bryant is seeking happen? Time will tell.

Ian Happ And Tommy La Stella Are Already Making Web Gems

It might only be the first spring training game, but don’t tell that to Ian Happ and Tommy La Stella. The duo combined for a pair of outstanding defensive plays for the Chicago Cubs on Friday, when they started Cactus League action against the Milwaukee Brewers.

La Stella got the nod at third base and on his very first chance he made a smooth bare-handed play to throw out the speedy Keon Broxton.

La Stella also had the first Cubs RBI of spring training, slashing a single to left field in the third inning.

Yet, it was Happ who made the best play of the game, with this diving catch in center field to rob the Brewers of a couple runs in the bottom of the third.

Happ is one of three or four players that Joe Maddon is considering to bat leadoff this season.

Cubs Had Their First Audition For This Season’s Leadoff Hitter

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon doesn’t want you to read too much into the first lineup in spring training, but it was the first of many auditions to get the leadoff spot for the 2018 season.

Before the Cubs began Cactus League play against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, Maddon said four players were under consideration to be the team’s leadoff man in 2018.

Who won’t it be? Kris Bryant.

Ian Happ is a part of that group that will get looks at the leadoff position in spring training and that’s where he batted against the Brewers Friday.

However, Maddon only gave out Happ’s name to start, but also said Kyle Schwarber could be given another shot at leading off as well.

No other names were given, however, it’s not too hard to figure out that Albert Almora Jr. is most likely in that group of 3-4 guys. We could also see Ben Zobrist at the leadoff spot, but of course that depends on how much he plays and if he can stay healthy following a down 2017. The playing time and healthy will go hand in hand, although it’s clear now that Javier Baez has secured most of the starting time at second base.

As far as Happ’s first look leading off this spring, he flew out deep to the warning track in his first at-bat and then grounded out in his second. He started in center field and did make this awesome catch.

So, there’s something to keep your eye on this spring, as there are few roster spots up for grabs, but the leadoff spot can be anyone’s to win.

Former Dolphins Player Makes Threat To Shoot Up School And Kill Former Teammate

jonathan martin

People have been trying to dismiss the mass shooter epidemic sweeping the U.S. for years now. It’s not going away. In fact, it’s getting worse. The Parkland tragedy that took the lives of 17 people is barely in the rearview mirror and already it looked like another tragedy was about to unfold. This one involving for Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin.

Most remember him as the infamous victim of the bullying scandal that rocked the Dolphins involving former guard Richie Incognito. He was accused of picking on Martin in the locker room, calling racial slurs among other things. Martin appeared unable to handle such abuse and found his way out of the NFL not too long after that. It would seem he’s no stranger to this sort of treatment and it’s festered in his psyche for a long time.

That reality took a dark turn when Martin put up a disturbing Instagram post. It called out his former teammate as well as his high school with a simple statement on how bully often leads cowardly people to take one of two actions. They either kill themselves or kill a bunch of people.

Jonathan Martin was quickly arrested after post went viral

Needless to say, there were several people instantly concerned about the post. Knowing how the mass shooter issue hasn’t been dealt with, many fear it’s emboldening others to seek their own revenge. Martin is a bullying victim and one with lots of money. Enough to acquire the needed tools to go on a rampage of his own. The authorities were made aware of the situation and they acted swiftly.

It’s not surprising this happened. Martin telegraphed himself with that post, and with law enforcement on high alert, there was no way they ignore such a blatant threat. It’s a welcome relief to know he’s off the streets. Hopefully, they can get him some sorely-needed help.

Signing Pernell McPhee Was Another Free Agency Mistake, Among Others By Ryan Pace

The Chicago Bears are finally expected to cut ties with Pernell McPhee after three long years of mediocrity. Originally inked to a five-year deal, McPhee failed to play a 16 game season while in Chicago and struggled on the field the past two years. The time has come for Ryan Pace to once again lick his free agency wounds and move on.

McPhee is on the books for over $7 million in 2018 and is currently expected to join Mike Glennon on the Bears’ cut list. Glennon also represents a huge free agency mistake by Pace, but we’ll come back to that.

After churning out 53 tackles, six sacks and three pass deflections in his first season with Chicago, McPhee has been woefully unproductive since. He has failed to stay healthy and didn’t even manage to start a single game in 2016. Let me repeat that, he didn’t start ONE GAME in 2016.

Some might read that and immediately think that was unpredictable, and we would immediately disagree. Let’s rewind back to 2015.

Here is an excerpt from the NFL.com article originally announcing the signing:

“More than a few Ravens role players have been overpaid as marginal starters elsewhere, but the sense is that McPhee — who has never topped 616 snaps in a season — is just entering the prime of his career.”

Focus heavily on the bolded section. There were several concerns over McPhee’s knee when arriving in Chicago and those concerns heightened when competent people realized why Baltimore was letting him get away. McPhee was a clear injury risk so Baltimore limited his snaps to keep him healthy three out of the four seasons he spent there. However, when coming to the Bears, everything changed.

In his first season in Chicago, McPhee played 629 snaps which immediately exceeded his highest total in Baltimore. That may be why he only played in 14 games.

In 2016, he only played 291 snaps and failed to start a game, as we said.

In 2017, McPhee played 393 snaps.

As you can clearly see, Baltimore had the recipe for success. Keeping McPhee at, or around, 600 snaps was ideal to keep him healthy. History showed that. Pace was responsible for exceeding that total right away, and that eventually resulted in three years of health issues.

Losing McPhee’s production wasn’t the only issue this created.

The Bears realized how fragile McPhee was early on, so they spent their first round pick in 2016 on another OLB, Leonard Floyd. Had McPhee become the full-time player he was expected to be this pick likely would have been a CB. Considering that scenario, maybe Pace was aiming for a dominate Floyd/McPhee combo?

In Mel Kiper’s 2018 Mock Draft 2.0, Chicago is once again predicted to take an OLB, Tremaine Edmunds. Edmunds is a great athlete with lots of versatility, but with McPhee’s cut looming it will force the Bears to, once again, spend a high pick to solidify their pass rush.

Unfortunately for Pace, Chicago is a long way from solidifying anything. Floyd has already missed 10 games in his first two seasons making him unreliable to say the least.

According to Sports Illustrated, McPhee was ranked as the 12th best free agent in the 2015 class. In their description of him it read “low mileage and still young.” This made McPhee’s knee issue sound positive, but failed to reference that Baltimore had kept him on a monitored snap count since he joined the league. Had they considered that, it likely would have dropped him down the list. This list loses even more credibility when you factor in their #11 selection, Jason Worilds, who retired before starting the 2015 season.

December 10, 2015 – ESPN – “The outside linebacker’s inaugural season in Chicago has been a successful one, but a bothersome knee injury has curtailed his effectiveness.”

This quote indicates McPhee’s knee was “bothersome” throughout his first year in Chicago proving his injury concerns in Baltimore were very real and came with him. If he was healthy, the Ravens never would have let him leave. Unfortunately, the Bears were apparently the only ones who didn’t know this, that lead to surgery in early 2017.

Sounds incredibly familiar to the Kevin White situation.

McPhee signed a 5 year, $38,750,000 contract with the Chicago Bears, including a $2,500,000 signing bonus, $15,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $7,750,000. He never played one full season.

The moral of this story is clear, Pace took a gamble and lost. The same thing that happened with Mike Glennon, Ray McDonald, Eddie Royal, Jerrell Freeman and Bobbie Massie. One would have to believe the Bears rewarded Pace an extension through 2021 for his success in the draft because his failures in free agency are evident.

If the Chicago Bears are going to rebuild their entire team through the draft then it’s going to take a very long time. This makes the next two seasons crucial for Pace to finally hit in free agency and get Mitch Trubisky the help he needs. With Akiem Hicks as his only claim to fame, Pace is going to need a drastic turn around in the free agency market to get this team back on track.

Side Effect of Huge NFL Trade May Actually Help Chicago Bears Plans

chicago bears 2018 plans

The Chicago Bears 2018 plans are a mystery. One thing that is likely though? They aren’t going to make any aggressive trades. At least not before the draft. GM Ryan Pace isn’t known for that sort of thing. Besides, the Bears roster isn’t in a position where a big trade for a notable player would put them on the path to the Super Bowl. They aren’t there yet. However, this doesn’t mean they can’t benefit from such trades.

Already they might be given a huge opportunity thanks to a blockbuster that is set to go down. The Los Angeles Rams have worked out a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs that will send Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters to the west coast in exchange for a package of draft picks. It’s the second such major deal to happen this off-season and free agency is still almost three weeks away.

On the surface that’s a huge score for the Rams who are already considered a Super Bowl threat. At the same time, the Chiefs rebuild gets a huge boost with another influx of quality draft choices as they try to reform the roster around Patrick Mahomes. That’s all fine and good. So what does this have to do with the Bears?

Peters arrival thrusts Trumaine Johnson into Chicago Bears 2018 plans

One thing this trade does is make the fate of pending Rams free agent Trumaine Johnson clear. The 28-year old cornerback was held in place by the franchise tag this past season. Some wondered if L.A. might make a late push to re-sign him. The Peters deal nixes that idea. So Johnson will become a free agent.

This is great news for the Bears. They have their own situation at cornerback developing. Four of their top guys are coming out of contract including Kyle Fuller, Prince Amukamara, Bryce Callahan and Sherrick McManis. Money isn’t a big issue. They have enough to retain all four if they wished. It’s a question of whether the deals can be struck before March 14th and whether they want to stay.

If any of them leave, particularly Fuller or Amukamara, the Bears absolutely have to get aggressive on the free agent market to replace them. Having a quality veteran like Johnson enter the pool will be a welcome relief. The 2018 class is looking like it should be a strong one.

  • Trumaine Johnson
  • Malcolm Butler
  • Darqueze Dennard
  • Aaron Colvin
  • Vontae Davis
  • E.J. Gaines

There’s a lot of talent in that group and considerable depth beyond them. There are no guarantees in free agency, but it’s common sense that the more quality targets are available the better the odds of the Bears landing one. Johnson has 10 interceptions over the past three seasons. It would be fun to see what Vic Fangio could do with him.
