What Makes Mitch Trubisky So Special? Kyle Long Eagerly Explains

mitch trubisky

Kyle Long has played with a lot of quarterbacks in his short NFL career. In fact, that number sits at a healthy seven going into 2018. It’s safe to say the veteran guard has seen the full range of personalities and talents at the position. He suited up with the enigmatic Jay Cutler and his gunslinging ways. Then he went to battle with career backup Josh McCown. Now for the first time, he’s learning what it’s like to protect a top five draft pick in Mitch Trubisky.

That experience was limited to just seven games in 2017. Long was beset by multiple injuries that eventually landed him out for the season. Those injuries required three different surgeries over the past few months to fix. Yet even in that time, the 29-year old hasn’t lost his enthusiasm for the future.

If anything Long has grown more and more excited by the day. Part of it is the refreshing message brought about by new head coach Matt Nagy. However, the bulk of it is his brief but eye-opening experience with the Bears’ young quarterback.

Kyle Long talks differently about Mitch Trubisky than any other

The thing to remember about Long is he’s a great teammate. He’ll defend anybody who wears a Bears uniform in front of the cameras or on social media. He was one of the biggest Cutler supporters during the three years they were together and had great things to say about him. Yet it’s clear that Trubisky has made a far more profound impression in such a short time. Long explained during a recent interview.

“I can’t put words to it,” Long said. “What Mitch Trubisky was born with was something that not a lot of people were born with. I can’t explain it. When you’re around him, you feel it and it’s real. Quiet confidence and a sense of calm and comfortability with the situation, any situation he’s put in.”

There were certainly glimpses of that during last season. Trubisky would make big plays in certain situations. Plays that only a handful of quarterbacks could’ve possibly made. The fact he did it with so little experience and playing in a rudimentary offensive system? That makes it all the more impressive. Now Trubisky has games under his belt, an advanced new system and weapons to execute it with. Long, like others, see big things on the horizon.

He can’t wait to get started.

“I Felt Like I Was Kind Of A Piece Of Shit Teammate” Tommy La Stella Gives Must-Watch Interview

Guys, I’m not joking, you have go watch and listen to this Tommy La Stella interview. I’m only going to share a few of my favorite parts, but that doesn’t come close to doing it justice in what is a must-watch for Cubs fans, baseball fans and hell anyone in general.

La Stella joined the Fitness Break Room Podcast in January, but the episode wasn’t published until a few days ago and boy was it spectacular. La Stella talked with host Samual Pogue and discussed everything about his life.

Here’s just a glimpse of how candid La Stella was, talking about what got him back into the game of baseball, learning about himself and buying into the team concept.

Just a heads up, there is some NSFW language in these clips and throughout the entire interview.

He gave background about feeling he was done with baseball in 2015, his first season with the Cubs, as he spent the majority of the year injured. Just great in-depth stuff from La Stella.

By the way, ever wonder why you don’t see La Stella on social media? Here’s your answer.

Tommy got deep in the nearly 90-minute interview, but again it is well worth your time.

He also talked about how Joe Maddon is one of the main influences in his life and how the Cubs manager helped La Stella gain a different perspective.

And Maddon’s mentality has definitely spread throughout the Cubs clubhouse, building a new culture since 2015.

There was also this funny story about how La Stella got back into baseball. He said he lost interest during high school and wanted to take a step back, but all it took to get him back was working at Applebee’s for five minutes.

So here it is, the full interview of Tommy La Stella on the Fitness Break Room Podcast.

Awesome stuff from La Stella.

Jose Abreu Hits Go-Ahead Home Run In The 8th

Jose Abreu has been red hot to begin the year and his 2nd dinger of the season couldn’t have come at a better time.

Carson Fulmer threw a gem in his first start of the year but the suspect bullpen allowed the Blue Jays to tie it at 3 before Abreu’s heroics. Lets hope the White Sox can buckle down and come back to Chicago with a win.

Jordan Howard Trade Rumors Get Violent Shove Into Serious

jordan howard

Everybody heard about the Jordan Howard trade rumors last month. John Mullin and I confirmed they were out there, most notably around the Miami Dolphins when they still had Jarvis Landry to deal in return. That buzz fizzled out after the Dolphins sent him to the Cleveland Browns instead. However, that never meant Howard was suddenly made unavailable. It merely meant the rumors faded into the background.

There is now an undercurrent of fear that Howard is still on the block. Not only that but a possible trade could be near. This is the draft season after all and people tend to jump at shadows. Still, it’s hard not to feel like something is going on based on this new information. It centers around some recent adjustments Howard made to his Instagram account.

Not too long ago the page was adorned with Bears-related paraphernalia. New inspections reveal that is no longer the case. Though there are pictures of footballs and even a Cubs jersey, there is not a single Bears logo to be found. It’s curious to many, and alarming as well.

Jordan Howard trade rumors began with the arrival of Matt Nagy

So the lingering question is why? Why would the Bears be so eager to unload a 23-year old Pro Bowler with two 1,000-yard seasons under his belt already? Namely, the answer rests on the new head coach. Matt Nagy runs an offense that is predicated on throwing the ball. It’s why the Bears invested so heavily at wide receiver and tight end this off-season. They want to build this thing around Mitch Trubisky.

Not a bad plan. Unfortunately, that creates a problem with Howard. Put simply he is not good catching the ball. In two years he already has 12 dropped passes. This is a problem because running backs were targeted over 100 times in the Kansas City Chiefs passing game last year. It’s a vital component to the scheme’s success. Having a feature back who can’t catch is a weakness.

Again, this is not the time to simply proclaim Howard is gone. This could just be a coincidence. It could also be Howard playing a prank. Nothing is certain. Still, with his lack of pure fit in the offense and a loaded running back class in the draft? It’s hard not to see the possibility of a trade growing nearer. The best thing to do is sit back and see what Ryan Pace does.

No more excuses about tickets being too expensive and by the way that excuse is garbage because I can go on StubHub or SeatGeek right now and find cheap tickets for good seats, but anyway the Chicago Cubs are now offering fans $10 tickets for all 81 home games at Wrigley Field in 2018.

The team announced the promotion that will work through a lottery program. Fans have the opportunity to buy up to four tickets per game that you register for. The “10/Sixty” program offers 60 lower-level terrace seats at $10 inclusive of taxes and fees for each home game.

Registration opens 48 hours before the game starts and closes 24 hours before first pitch. There is no fee to enter.

Given the excitement and demand for the Cubs’ home opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates Monday, April 9, fans can register for the game starting Wednesday, April 4, through Sunday, April 8, at 1:20 p.m. CDT.

Fans randomly selected in a drawing will receive an email a minimum of 12 hours before the start of the game with their opportunity to purchase up to four tickets, subject to availability, and instructions to complete the purchase with the same MLB.com or Cubs.com account used when initially registering for 10/Sixty Tickets.

Well done, Cubs.

VIDEO: Bryce Harper Walks Up To Bat With “Go Cubs Go” Playing

So, the organist for the Atlanta Braves thought it would be funny to troll Bryce Harper during this week’s series against the Washington Nationals by playing “Go Cubs Go” and I guess it’s funny, but as a Cubs fan I freakin love it.

We’ve seen the rumors, the Cubs are listed as the favorites to sign him, he’s expressed his love for the Cubs, so this video of Harper walking up to bat while “Go Cubs Go” plays just warms my heart.

Get used to hearing that, Bryce.

Kyle Long Leaves No Doubt About His 2018 Expectations

chicago bears offense

While Matt Nagy’s offense expects to be aggressive, attacking and innovative, there will still be a component and need to be able to run the ball well. An effective ground game opens up things in the passing game. So Nagy will be relying heavily on Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen this year to carry that burden. However, they’re not the only ones responsible for an effective rushing attack.

In order to be able to effectively move the chains, the offensive line has to be in sync and opening up lanes for the ball carrier. A running back can have all the talent in the world, but if he’s running behind a line that can’t create any space for him, he’s not going to be effective. That’s why the news that the Bears just received is so good to hear.

Offseason workouts just kicked off and the Bears players got to meet with Nagy for the first time at the facilities. Other interviews take place during this time and Patrick Finley, a writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, got to chat with Bears Right Guard Kyle Long.

Long has become one of the “faces of the franchise” over the past few years and is now one of the oldest players on the team at 29. He’s incredibly powerful, gritty and tough when he’s on the field and playing at full strength. However, he’s been injured off and on over the past couple seasons…causing the Bears to rely on their depth. This off-season though, Long made sure to attack that. He wanted to get right and it lead to three surgeries.

Long endured surgeries on his neck, shoulder and elbow this off-season and has been in recovery mode since. He had some good things to say though when asked about how he’s feeling.

“…there’s certain things that are time-sensitive that we have to follow a certain timeline with, the neck being one of them. as you know it’s not something you wanna take lightly. We’re gonna take all the time we need, but there will be no limitations once the season rolls around.”

Long’s health is vital to the performance of the offensive line this next season. He’s a leader on and off the field and the glue that holds that line together. A fully healthy Kyle Long is essential to allowing Howard and Cohen those running lanes that will then translate to opening up passing lanes.

It’s true what they say, “Football is won in the trenches.”

Matt Nagy’s First Speech To The Bears Would Fire Up a Dead Guy

Matt Nagy held certain advantages over other head coaches this year. Being in his first year running the Chicago Bears, he was permitted to start his off-season program early. It’s an NFL rule that allows new coaches extra time to begin implementing their new systems and establishing the messages they want the players to hear.

Nagy isn’t a fool. This may seem like a superficial courtesy, but it’s also an opportunity. It allows him to get his message across without sacrificing needed time to work. If he could get through to the players right away, they would strive towards being excellent in 2018 before several other teams even arrived in their facilities.

For this to happen, Nagy needed to make a big first impression. Marc Trestman failed because he wasn’t able to move men with his words. People talk about Nagy being an offensive mastermind. That’s all well and good. So was Trestman. The key to being a successful head coach isn’t the Xs and Os. It’s being a leader, somebody who can get grown men to believe in what they preach and do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Based on the buzz coming out of Halas Hall? Nagy nailed it.

The first message of the Matt Nagy era was totally uncompromising

Larry Mayer of Chicagobears.com got exclusive access to the Bears’ first hours back at work. Before the working out and practicing could begin though, Nagy spoke to the players. Sam Acho and Akiem Hicks, two defensive leaders and veterans came away stunned at how effective the young head coach was at motivating the troops.

“Hearing coach Nagy’s message this morning was unbelievable,” said outside linebacker Sam Acho. “He talked about obsession; obsessing over winning, obsessing over being a great teammate, obsessing over doing the best you could possibly do. That’s what got me really fired up.”

Defensive end Akiem Hicks revealed that Nagy’s message to the team was a simple one.

“We’re here to win, that’s it,” Hicks said. “Obsessed about winning, obsessed about your craft, just be better than you were yesterday, and that’s our focus.”

This is the sort of statement that proves Nagy understands the fundamental rule of pro football. The only way to win is to be more heavily invested and determined than your opponent to be better. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady epitomize this reality. They aren’t the greatest ever because they’re the smartest or most talented. They’re the greatest because nobody is ever going to outwork them towards finding an edge. Obsession is what drives them.

Now the Bears have somebody in charge who understands that. This is a good thing.

Seems Like Cardinals Players Even Hate Playing For The Cardinals

You know who really hates the St. Louis Cardinals? Yes, basically everyone outside of St. Louis, but so does their starting center-fielder Tommy Pham. At least that’s the impression you get after reading this incredible feature story in Sports Illustrated, where Pham lets out all his anger toward the people running the Cardinals.

Pham, 30, was drafted out of high school in 2006 by the Cardinals in the 16th round. He’s dealt with injuries, but has always performed in the minors. Pham didn’t make it to the majors until 2014, and didn’t get actual MLB playing time until 2015. Last year, Pham was incredible, putting up a 5.9 fWAR in 128 games, clobbering 23 home runs and stealing 25 bases, while having a .411 OBP.

It was a breakout year for Pham, but he hasn’t forgotten about the disrespect he feels he’s received from the Cardinals. Here’s just a taste of what Pham had to say in the Sports Illustrated article by Jack Dickey.

Pham had chafed at being stuck in Memphis before. Early in 2014, after being leapfrogged by better-regarded prospects such as Randal Grichuk, Stephen Piscotty and Oscar Taveras, Pham says he called Gary LaRocque, the Cardinals’ farm director, and demanded his release. “I said, ‘You know what, I’m the best mother—— on this team, and you guys don’t even know it,’” he recalls. “I said those exact words. They told me things happen, I’ll get some at bats. I just had to wear it.”

It gets even better. Telling this directly to Mike Matheny’s face is awesome.

While he made the Opening Day roster in 2016, he strained an oblique in his first at bat. Once Pham healed, the Cardinals sent him down to the Redbirds. In response, Pham says, he “threw numbers” at St. Louis manager Mike Matheny. “Looking back on it, that’s not something you want to do.” He took the relative high road when demoted again in spring training of 2017, telling Matheny, “I’m gonna go get better, but just know this: There’s not one player in the minor leagues with my Triple A résumé and my big league résumé, because they’re all up here starting.”

Again, it’s important to point out that a part of the reason Pham never got a fair shot at being an every-day starter for the Cardinals was because of injury and a degenerative eye condition, keratoconus. Yet, Pham’s never let that hold him down. He’s regarded as a hard worker and has come back from injury every time and played even better than before.

This is the best part.

Still, Pham hadn’t thought to quit. Then the season started. “We’re two weeks in, and I’m raking,” he says. “I’m hitting like .400. The big league team was 3–9, and all three outfielders were hitting .200. They tried [Matt] Adams out there, and he’s a great hitter, but he just couldn’t play the outfield. So I’m like, They’re getting the reports every day, they know I’m raking. What the f—? When are they gonna call me up? And then we’re three weeks in. The guys are still struggling, Grichuk, Dex [Dexter Fowler], Piscotty. And I’m still balling! So finally I said, They’re not gonna f—–’ call me up, f— it, and I zoned out in Triple A. Every day I was just like, F— this. I’ve made it to the big leagues, f— it.”

He stopped showing up for early work, daring his manager to bench him, daring St. Louis to cut him loose. Pham’s agents had learned that other MLB teams as well as Japanese clubs were interested. “I’m thinking, [the Cardinals] are not gonna trade me,” Pham says. “They won’t sell me to Japan. What the f—? They clearly don’t believe in me. Let a mother—— leave! And they wouldn’t even do that.”

This is who the Cardinals had ahead of Pham in 2017, and it gives you a pretty good idea of why he was pissed off about not playing.

Pham eventually got his time to prove what he could do and in 2017, he was the best player on the Cardinals.

He’s 30-years-old in the last year before arbitration, (yes, he won’t be a free agent until he’s 34, he was drafted at 18, that sucks) and if you think he’s still not bitter then you’re wrong. Especially at the members of the  Cardinals organization who told him the believed in him all along.

That’s bullshit for Pham.

“They said, ‘We believed you could do it all along.’ That’s the thing that’s so mind-boggling. I said, If that’s the f—–’ case, then why was I f—–’ demoted to Triple A? If that’s the case, why the f— was I batting in the eight hole this year, behind the guy who got f—–’ called up from high A? That s—, that’s that fake s—, man. I’m from a background where my mom kept it so real. My mom would be like, ‘Man, look, I don’t have no money to get you nothing for Christmas, I don’t have no money to get you nothing for your birthday. I’m sorry. I gotta pay the bills.’ I respected her because, s—, she told us from the get-go. All that fake s—, man, I was never raised like that.”

Please, read the entire story. It is incredible.

Anyway, this past offseason the Cardinals offered a two-year deal to Pham. He didn’t think twice about whether or not to accept the contract.

Via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“If you look at what I did last year, I didn’t think there was a great amount of appreciation.”

“The numbers didn’t add up to me and my agency and the union. Nothing made sense. I didn’t think. It’s business first and foremost. I didn’t like it. The numbers didn’t seem right. I wouldn’t sell myself short like that.”

There is definitely resentment from Pham toward the Cardinals and his latest comments sure do give off a certain impression.

I have a feeling Pham doesn’t buy into “The Cardinal Way.”

Braves Trolling Bryce Harper Will Actually Make Cubs Fans Smile

So, not sure if you’ve heard, but Bryce Harper is most definitely signing with the Cubs after 2018. It’s gonna happen and hell, even the organist for the Atlanta Braves knows it.

Even though this is meant as a troll for Harper, I bet he doesn’t mind and neither will Cubs fans. Actually the only people pissed are Washington Nationals fans, who have heard “Go Cubs Go” being played before Harper gets to the plate in Atlanta.

It started Monday and it continued during Tuesday’s game as well.

Hey, it seems like Harper loves it because he’s killed the Braves in two games, going 1-for-2, with a home run, three RBIs, four walks and three runs scored on Monday. So far in Tuesday’s game, Harper homered again, has driven in two and walked once.

Last week, the Cubs were listed as the favorites to sign Harper after the 2018 season, when he becomes a free agent.

Best friends with Kris Bryant, loves playing in Wrigley Field, named his dog Wrigley and remember this…

But hey, the Braves probably can’t wait to see Harper leave the NL East, but as Cubs fans, please keep on playing “Go Cubs Go,” so he can get used to it once he’s on the North Side next year.
