Chicago Bears Greatest Periods Are Tied to an Eerie Fact

roquan smith

The Chicago Bears continue their search for finding the “winning way.” It looked like they had it for a brief period from 2005 to 2010 but for one reason or another, they couldn’t quite close the deal. So why is that? What was different about their championship runs in ages past that they couldn’t quite figure out 10 years ago?

After doing some digging in hopes of finding some common thread between those eras, I found something interesting. It’s what the courts would call “circumstantial evidence.” Yet at the same time, there are too many coincidences to ignore. It involves two key positions on their roster, both central to the success of the offense and defense:  quarterback and middle linebacker.

What people don’t know is the greatest runs in Bears history were sparked when they secured one and then the other in a space of one calendar year high in the draft. That may sound a bit complicated, so here’s a quick breakdown to explain.

Sid Luckman and Bulldog Turner (1939 and 1940)

This came during a period when the “middle linebacker” position didn’t exist. However, Bulldog Turner played its spiritual successor. This was during a time when players played two ways. Turner was primarily their future Hall of Fame center but also manned the middle on defense. He went 7th overall to the Bears in 1940.

This came one year after the team took their quarterback Sid Luckman 2nd overall in 1939. The two led the way to the first of four championships Turner’s rookie season, smashing the Redskins 73-0 in the NFL title game. Both ended up in Canton.

Mike Singletary and Jim McMahon (1981 and 1982)

Is it any coincidence then that the second-greatest run of winning for the Bears came in the 1980s? A decade that began when a slightly undersized kid from Baylor named Mike Singletary arrived in 1981. Then the next year he was joined by a rebellious kid from BYU in Jim McMahon. They would go on to form the brains behind the juggernaut Chicago became in 1985.

McMahon was a superb tactician, turning a boring offensive scheme into something defenses struggled to stop when needed. Singletary directed the swirling maelstrom of destruction that was the “46” defense which set records, claiming Defensive Player of the Year honors twice. The Bears won a Super Bowl and made the playoffs five times.

Where things get weird is that this phenomenon tends to happen every four decades or so. It’s been 37 years now since the Bears secured their last pairing and by coincidence, their past two drafts set up a remarkably similar scenario.

Mitch Trubisky and Roquan Smith arrive just one year apart

Keep in mind the Bears haven’t fulfilled that exact scenario since Singletary and McMahon. So imagine knowing all this and then recalling that GM Ryan Pace just fulfilled those exact parameters when he drafted Mitch Trubisk 2nd overall in 2017 and then Roquan Smith 8th overall this year. Almost in the exact same draft slows as Luckman and Turner, no less.

Given how superstitious football fans can be, it’s hard to not feel like this might be fate. Trubisky is garnering loads of respect already from teammates, coaches and even national media. His mixture of talent and leadership qualities had Mike Ditka label him as an upgraded version of McMahon.

Smith became the first inside linebacker since Brian Urlacher to be drafted by the Bears in the 1st round. He won the Dick Butkus award in 2017 for his play at Georgia. It seems like complete destiny that he was going to wear navy blue and orange. Like Trubisky, he’s heralded for his intelligence and leadership qualities.

Have the Bears found their two newest pillars to build a champion around? Only the games to come will reveal that. Even so, it’s hard not to feel like the winds of fate might once again be blowing in Chicago’s direction.

2018 NHL Draft: Oliver Wahlstrom Would Be Awesome For Blackhawks

If you don’t know about Oliver Wahlstrom, you should and you will after reading this article. Wahlstrom has always been awesome. He is currently being projected as a Top 10 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. As a 9-year-old, he went viral with his absolutely INSANE spinning backhand shootout goal and has not looked back since.

Previously, I wrote an article about the 2018 NHL Draft and my favorite prospect, Quinn Hughes, but I also included a few more prospects who I like just as much. I had mentioned Oliver Wahlstrom as one of those top targets for the Blackhawks. Personally, Wahlstrom is one of my favorite players in the 2018 NHL Draft. I really hope he falls to the Blackhawks at number 8. Whenever he joins the NHL roster, he is the type of player who can come in and make an immediate impact and change the course of the franchise.

Who Is Oliver Wahlstrom?

Oliver Wahlstrom is a right-handed winger and can also play the center position. Wahlstrom stands at 6’1″ and weighs 186 pounds. He just turned 18 in June. Oliver learned the game of hockey from his father, Joakim, who played well at the University of Maine and then went on to play a couple seasons in Sweden.

Oliver Wahlstrom analyzed his own game and said this about himself,

“I tHINK MY GAME IS (BEING) A BIG, STRONG POWER FORWARD WITH A LOT OF sKILL AND CREATIVITY BUT I THINK MY SHOT IS MY BIGGEST ASSET. HUMBLY, I BELIEVE I HAVE THE BEST SHOT IN THIS DRAFT. I WORK ON IT EVERY DAY.”

Curtis Joe of eliteprospects.com gave us his insight on Oliver Wahlstrom as well. Joe said this about Wahlstrom,

“[HE’S] A SENSATIONAL SCORING THREAT, OLIVER WAHLSTROM IS A FIERCE COMPETITOR THAT PREYS ON WEAK PLAY.  HE EXPLOITS GAPS IN THE NEUTRAL ZONE; HIS POSITIONING ALLOWS HIM TO CARRY THE PUCK FORWARD IMMEDIATELY OR SHIFT UP AND INTO STRIDE OFF OF AN OUTLET PASS. HE PROMPTLY TAKES EASY LANES AWAY FROM THE OPPOSITION ALONG HIS OWN BLUE LINE, BUT COULD STAND TO BE MORE PROACTIVE DEFENSIVELY.”

Joe then went on to describe Wahlstrom’s elite skills on offense. He said,

“OFFENSIVELY, HE MIGHT BE DESCRIBED AS UNCONTAINABLE: THE CONFIDENCE HE HAS IN his individual puck skill, paired with a high level of thinking, makes him a difficult cog to take out of alignment. He is able to create opportunities for himself, as well as teammates, out of nothing; this, in turn, translates to energy on the ice and in the building as a whole. all in all, oliver wahlstrom is an instinct-driven hockey player gifted with the size, skating, skill, and smarts that coaches yearn for.”

This almost sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t. The Blackhawks might just luck out and get the guy they need. They can use another young, elite talent who is not afraid to make things happen for himself and teammates. Someone who likes to get to the dirty areas around the net, when necessary, is a rare breed. Wahlstrom would help round out their top two lines, especially with the retirement of Marian Hossa.

Hockey Comes Easy For Oliver Wahlstrom

Wahlstrom could easily be the best scorer in this year’s draft. His shot is clearly his best attribute. When you think of great shots in the NHL, you think of players like Alex Ovechkin or Patrik Laine. Well, Oliver Wahlstrom is right up there with them. He actually modeled his shot after both of them. Wahlstrom was interviewed at the NHL Draft Combine and he talked about his path to the 2018 NHL Draft.

You can see for yourself here in this video of Wahlstrom’s greatest hits from the 2018 IIHF U18 tournament in Russia. He shoots that puck like it’s nobody’s business and his one-timer is incredibly smooth. Watch out for number 18.

All Oliver Wahlstrom does is score, score, and then score some more. This kid makes it look so easy. Whether he is driving hard to the net or taking a slap shot from the slot, Wahlstrom is a threat to score at all times. He netted 94 points (48G, 46A) in 62 games with the U.S. National U18 team last season. Those numbers are easily better than anything you could ever do in a video game. That type of production crazy to think about from anyone, let alone a 17-year-old. If Oliver Wahlstrom falls to the Blackhawks at the 8 spot, you know it is going to be hard as hell to pass on a player of Wahlstrom’s caliber even with so many talented defensemen in the draft this year. That is why I would take him and not think twice about it.

Wahlstrom has actually been putting up these types of numbers for years now. Take a look at the rest of his impressive resume.

Offensive consistency is the name of the game. This is exactly what the Blackhawks need and could help the rest of the guys on the team get back to their usual selves and have a bounce-back season. Even though Oliver Wahlstrom committed to playing at Boston College next season, drafting him would set the Blackhawks up nicely for an accelerated rebuild which is exactly what the organization and the fans want. The 2018 NHL Draft will definitely be an exciting one, so don’t miss it next week on June 22-23.

Surprising Bears Name Makes the NFL All-Under-25 Team

The Chicago Bears now have one of the youngest rosters in the NFL. GM Ryan Pace’s rebuilding plan appears to be coming to fruition. Now it’s a matter of these players starting to elevate their games to start winning. Some though have already started doing that. Names who didn’t waste any time making big plays as rookies. This certainly has caught notice of the rest of the league.

So here’s a question. If given a choice, which name on the roster who is under the age of 25 would qualify for the NFL All-Under-25 team? The simple answer is Jordan Howard. He’s rushed for at least 1,100 yards in back-to-back seasons and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2016. Well, Elliot Harrison of NFL.com had a different choice in mind.

With Howard ousted in controversial fashion by Alvin Kamara of the Saints, Harrison instead went with his backfield teammate Tarik Cohen as the primary return ace.

“Cohen contributed in every which way for the Bears in 2017, bringing an explosive element to Chicago’s run game, pass game and return game. He finished in the top 10 in punt-return and kick-return average.”

Having a Bears player as the best return man on a compilation roster feels like old news after so many great years of Devin Hester. Still, it’s a reminder of how talented this teams’ backfield is. Not only is Cohen a huge threat in the return game, his versatility as a runner and receiver could make him lethal on offense under the direction of Matt Nagy.

People have compared him extensively to former Pro Bowler Darren Sproles. They forget that before becoming a lethal utility weapon, he made his mark in the return game. It seems rather fitting that Cohen is doing the same. It still doesn’t excuse the slight of Howard though.

Stats That Will Improve Your Opinion of Criticized Bears Players

There are plenty of Chicago Bears players on the current roster who’ve undergone some recent criticism for one reason or another. Fans view them as a weak point on the roster because of it. This is natural. It’s part of sports and what makes them so engaging. At the same time, people can tend to get a little carried away with the idea that these men are no good and even worthless.

So this article is a quick reminder that there’s almost never such a black and white reality in the NFL. If one looks a little closer they might find something a little surprising that ease or even negates the original issue about the player. Here are a few such example for people to digest.

Jordan Howard:  71.9 catch percentage

All anybody can talk about with Jordan Howard of late is how he’s a poor fit for this new offense under Matt Nagy. Why? It boils down to one reason:  he doesn’t catch the ball well. Nagy loves to use the running back as a receiving weapon. Howard has 12 drops in two years. That’s hardly ideal but it tends to not tell the entire story.

He actually caught 71.9% of his passes in 2017. That surpassed Jay Ajayi, C.J. Anderson, Jordan Matthews, and even the much-heralded Ezekiel Elliott. All of whom are supposedly more reliable threats in the passing game than Howard is. Maybe this will remind people that things are never as bad as they seem.

Josh Bellamy:  4 plays of 25 yards or more

The hammering of Bellamy by critics is easy enough to understand. The guy has a terrible habit of dropping catchable passes, most often in the absolute worst situations. His end zone gaffes against Tennessee and to a lesser extent Atlanta likely cost the Bears wins. At the same time, for all the heat he gets he was their best big play threat last year. He produced four plays of 25 yards or more in 2017, double the number of anyone else on the roster. He also got 119 of 356 yards after the catch.

Bobby Massie:  7 penalties in two years

He gets a ton of grief for not being the best pass protector in the world. That’s fair. Bobby Massie isn’t perfect. However, there is one good thing people can say about him. He’s a lot better about not hurting the offense with dumb mistakes than his more heralded counterpart Charles Leno. Since 2016, Massie has just seven total offensive penalties in 30 games. By comparison, Leno had 16. Sure he may not be elite but at least he’s disciplined.

DeAndre Houston-Carson:  10 special teams tackles

Some people are down on Houston-Carson because he hasn’t made any progress at the position he was drafted to play in safety. While that’s a fair complaint, the fact is he wasn’t given much of an opportunity. Meanwhile, people have completely overlooked how good the former sixth round pick has become on special teams. He finished in the top 30 of the NFL last season with 10 solo tackles. So sure they didn’t get the next Gary Fencik but finding a special teams ace late in the draft is pretty good too.

Pat O’Donnell:  0 punts blocked in two years

Listen. He’s not going to ever be the best punter in the world. That much is clear after four seasons. Still, one can at least say Pat O’Donnell improved steadily over that span. His 47 yards per punt last year was top 10 in the league. Perhaps his most overlooked stat though was zero blocked punts between 2016 and 2017.

That might not seem like a big deal until people get reminded he had two blocked punts during his first two seasons. It might seem minimal, but few things can sway a game more than having a routine punt turned into a prime scoring opportunity for the opponent.

Eloy Jimenez Had Dreams Of Playing In The NBA

Alright, let’s get this straight. The White Sox top prospect, resident baseball punisher and Minor League Baseball’s No. 3 prospect Eloy Jimenez…from the Dominican Republic…had dreams of playing in the NBA?

Yes, it’s true. Jimenez is part of a basketball legacy. His dad played basketball and his first love (like Tim Anderson) was basketball. Basketball isn’t that obscure in the Dominican Republic. In fact, the Caribbean island-chain has discovered a passion for the sport and fared well in international competition.

Jimenez fancied himself a playmaker like Kobe Bryant, but his dad had other plans. At 12 years old his father took him aside and explained the process of reaching the NBA versus the quick money of a career in baseball.

Jimenez shared the hilarity and frustration of his first at-bat. Basically, he popped up and told his dad he wanted to quit. But in only his second trip to the plate he whipped a home run; something he’s been doing ever since.

It’s hard to believe that he’s only been playing baseball for eight years and perhaps this plays into the White Sox deliberate and patient approach to promoting the slugger. After erupting early in the season and batting .374 in May with six home runs he has cooled off a bit.

With Jimenez size and skills he could really do some damage in the majors. The White Sox are ready for him to join the big-league club soon and fans have already called for him to reach the bigs.

But one can’t help but wonder what could have been if he stuck with basketball…

The White Sox announced new promotions to their 2018 schedule on Friday, two of which will delight a specific contingent of the fan base. Hawk Day on Sept. 2 will feature more than kind sentiments and an avalanche of tears. The White Sox will give away nesting dolls in the iconic broadcaster’s likeness.

The first 10,000 fans at the G-Spot on Sept. 2 will receive this special collection of Hawk’s career in baseball. It’s no coincidence that the White Sox take on the Red Sox that evening. Hawk routinely recalls his few years in Beantown on many broadcasts and loves to remind everyone about his conversations with Ted Williams.

Anyway…

We love us some Hawk and we love us some Frank Thomas, Paul Konerko and AJ Pierzynski; all of whom will join Harrelson in the booth on his farewell tour.

White Sox announce guest broadcastors to join Hawk in the booth.

Come for the beer, stay for the onesie!

The White Sox have formed a multi-year partnership with Budweiser, naming the brew its official domestic beer partner…and they have a special giveaway on Sept. 1 for adults 21 and older. Beware, Sox fans. Every Chicago area college student will descend on The Rate for this promotion.

But first, the beer.

Guaranteed Rate Field is known for its stupendous craft selection of snobby suds, but Scud Light and Bud Heavys will satisfy Merica’s traditionalists.

So, if you don’t have a mustache to savor the hoppy bitterness of a barren IPA…

…feel free to grab yourself a Bud and taste America.

Beer and baseball are proper matches. I mean, who doesn’t love barking at vendors for a “dog and a beer!” But now you can do it in a White Sox onesie.

The White Sox and Budweiser will giveaway this fashion-forward onesie to the first 10,000 fans, 21 and older on Sept. 1.

Just imagine you and Bae cuddled up by the radiator on a Romantic February night as the wind howls off Lake Michigan; onesie on and Bud in your hand. If love won’t keep you warm, at least the onesie will.

Holy Shit, Kyle Schwarber Just Hit A 465-Foot HR

The Chicago Cubs have killed St. Louis Cardinals starter Michael Wacha throughout his career and after two shutout losses in a row Wacha was exactly what the Cubs’ offense needed.

Ian Happ and Kris Bryant hit home runs in the third inning that put the Cubs ahead 3-0, then they score two more in the fourth on a bunt and a sac-fly. Then, Kyle Schwarber with the cherry on top, destroying this pitch for a three-run bomb that was estimated to go 465 feet.

(OK fine, not opposite field, but it was to the left of dead center)

Before tonight’s start Wacha had not allowed a home run to left-handed hitters this season. Schwarber’s was the second of the game, as Happ’s came left-handed as well.

The Cubs didn’t stop and scored three more runs in the fifth to take an 11-1 lead.

The Chicago Bulls May Have Found Their Superstar Of The Future

As an organization, what would it take to land a proven superstar? Future draft picks? Established role players? Young talent?

Well, the Chicago Bulls have all those assets, and with the news breaking that Kawhi Leonard wants to be traded, it may be time to pull the trigger.

Does This Trade Make Sense For The Bulls?

Hypothetically say the Bulls were to offer the 7th and 22nd pick in this draft along with Bobby Portis and Denzel Valentine, is that enough to get it done? The answer to that is yes. Kawhi will be leaving San Antonio as soon as possible according to all these reports, so the Spurs would be smart to take the best offer available.

If Kawhi can commit to a contract extension with the Bulls and they trade for him, this team will cause havoc in the East for years to come. Could you imagine a lineup of Dunn, Lavine, Leonard, Markkanen, and Lopez next year? That is an Eastern Conference Finals team waiting to happen. This also accelerates the rebuild which the franchise and fans alike want.

What Kawhi Brings To The Bulls

Leonard brings a young veteran player with championship pedigree. He also brings defense to a team that desperately needs it. Having Kawhi on the wing with Zach Lavine can really help hide Zach’s defensive struggles.

Plus for only being 26 years old, Kawhi has some pretty impressive awards to his name.

Also with Leonard being so young, he has so much more time to improve, which he has done every season since entering the league.

Why It Makes Sense For Kawhi

Kawhi can come to Chicago for a fresh start. He will come in with a young core who is hungry and eager to win. Plus he will be in the Eastern Conference, which almost guarantees him a shot at the Eastern Conference Finals or the NBA finals every year. It will definitely be interesting to see how this plays out, but the Chicago Bulls need to be very aggressive if they want a chance to land a superstar.

Chicago Bears Orange Jerseys Will Be Part of Unique Twist

chicago bears

The NFL is always trying new things to make the game more watchable. Among them is the ongoing evolution of their uniforms. Every year they allow teams to make certain modifications to what their players wear during certain weeks of the year. One game might be throwbacks. Another could be color rush. It’s been awhile but now the league is bringing back alternate jerseys. For the Chicago Bears, it’s their orange colors.

The last time the Bears wore a similar jersey was back in 2011. After that, the 1940s throwbacks became the dominant colors whenever the team did alternate styles. Since then a certain sect of fans has clamored for a return of the orange wave. At last their wish is coming true. The team announced that they will wear the alternates during two games this coming season.

However, it’s going to come with a unique twist. In addition to a home game against the Vikings at Soldier Field, the Bears will also wear those jerseys on a road game as well.

It’s not unusual for the Bears to wear their home uniforms on the road, but those are always their navy blue colors. This would mark the first time in recorded uniform history since way back in the early 20th century that they wore orange in an opposing stadium. It’s rather fitting it will come against Miami, another team that has alternate orange jerseys.

Not only that, but the Bears will also don their throwback uniforms this season as well. It will be a cornucopia of different looks from this team. Maybe the added confusion will give them an advantage. If nothing else they will be fun to look at from an aesthetic point of view. If they start winning some games? Those jerseys will start selling like hot cakes.

Eddie Jackson Goes Big With Name Drop for Trubisky Comparison

eddie jackson

Mitch Trubisky has heard plenty of comparisons for himself over the past couple months. New teammate Trey Burton admitted he saw visions of Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowler Carson Wentz. Mike Ditka claimed him to be a more talented version of former Bears icon Jim McMahon. Others have referenced former MVP Rich Gannon from the Oakland Raiders. It’s quite an array of names.

Yet these are all men who haven’t played with Trubisky. So what happens with somebody who had to go against him in practice every single day decides to offer his two cents? Starting safety Eddie Jackson got his chance to do just that. He appeared on SiriusXM NFL radio to talk about the state of the Bears.

Soon enough the subject of Trubisky came up and he was asked what his impressions were. Without blinking, Jackson dropped perhaps the most exciting name to date that he sees visions of.

Ryan Pace will love Eddie Jackson comparing Trubisky to Drew Brees

It’s rather fitting that Jackson chose Drew Brees in this instance. Remember that the Bears GM is Ryan Pace. He came from New Orleans in 2015. Before that, the man had a front row seat for Brees’ rise to superstardom that included so many shattered passing records and a Super Bowl championship in 2009. To Pace, he’s the standard by which all others are measured.

For him to spend a #2 pick on Trubisky, it was a clear indication that he saw capabilities that could rival Brees if cultivated properly. Now that Jackson, a defender no less is seeing those traits start to emerge it has to feel exciting for the team as a whole. Pace was successful in constructing his envisioned system from head coach to weapons around his young quarterback.

The only thing left is to let Trubisky do his thing. If Jackson is right, the Chicago will not be a place defenses want to place.
